We’ve all heard extensively of Paris and its glamorous Haussmann-designed boulevards and soaring Eiffel, London with the red telephone boxes and unmissable Victorian clock, and Madrid’s grand boulevards and imperial parks.

That’s the itinerary of every tourist going to Europe for the first time, and while we’re not really mad at them—these hotspots are famous for a reason—we can’t help but feel they’re not exactly the best representation of a raw, authentic Old Continent without the Disneyfication of it, if you know what we mean.

Everything seems too polished, too perfect, and too movie-like, and don’t get us wrong, we love a bit of daydreaming and storybook vibes ourselves, but sometimes, it’s the grungier, quirky, unexpected corners that truly take it there for us.

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Underrated and Balkan go hand in hand, and there’s no more unsung, crossroads-of-civilizations, criminally-overlooked capital than Sarajevo, the administrative heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Now, Bosnia itself is a modern mish-mash of cultures, including Orthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats, and a majority of Muslim Bosniaks, so it’s only fair that the capital city would be reflective of the nation’s diverse character.

In the heart of Baščaršija, the Muslim-majority area, you’ll find the landmark Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, an icon of Ottoman architecture, and one of the most prominent mosques in the Balkans. With the bazaar-style shops, cobbled streets, and ornate ablution fountains, the whole area truly feels like a slice of Turkey.

The craziest part? Walk some 6 minutes from the Muslim quarter of town, and you’ll hit the Sacred Heart Cathedral, a neo-Gothic marvel surrounded by Austro-Hungarian buildings, Central Europe-style café terraces, and tram-rattled boulevards.

Sarajevo still has one more trick up its sleeve. Right around the corner from the Catholic cathedral, there stands a massive Orthodox Cathedral, catering to the local Serb population, anchored by ćevapi spots and coffee houses.

Tie it all together, Sarajevo has a fascinating local history:

Its scenic Latin Bridge, spanning the Miljacka River, is where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, an event that infamously triggered World War I, and all around the Old Quarter, you can still spot scars of the bloody Bosnian War of the 90s, from bullet holes to sniper signage and abandoned shells of buildings.

Berlin may have the war-era hype, but Sarajevo feels like the real deal.

Tirana, Albania

Balkan capitals for the win.

Now, listen, Tirana’s not really somewhere you go for insanely beautiful architecture, picture-perfect corners that scream Europe, or that quaint, lovely Old World feel, but it feels inebriatingly authentic and gritty.

Even if it’s, hem, a little rough around the edges.

You see, Albania was stuck under an iron-fisted communist rule for many decades, and Tirana may have taken the brunt of that. While smaller Albanian towns like Berat and Gjirokaster still have a hint of a medieval charm, much of the capital’s historic flair was flattened or overwritten.

No castles, hardly any cobbled lanes, nor showstopping façades.

What you get today is an eclectic mix of modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers that don’t really seem to follow a strict urban pattern, commie-style apartment blocks that wouldn’t exactly look out of place in Russia, and weird, but incredibly cool Brutalist installations that will defy your sense of a European cityscape.

Want an example? Tirana Pyramid is an icon of the skyline, originally built in the 80s as a museum dedicated to Enver Hoxha, the communist leader at the time. After the fall of communism, the bunker-like structure became an exhibition space, a conference hall, and even a temporary TV station.

Now, it’s just a climbing spot for locals to catch the sunset over Tirana’s minarets and gleaming new high-rises.

Hoxha didn’t stop there: he was terrified Albania would eventually be invaded and overrun, so he built an insane amount of bunkers across the country.

One of the main ones is right in the capital, Bunk’Art, now a massive underground museum depicting life under the regime.

It’s dark, claustrophobic, and even a little unsettling, yet it’s one of the most eye-opening experiences you can do in town. Other than, of course, swinging by the Blloku district to explore the stylish café scene, or walking the serene footpaths looping around the big Artificial Lake in the middle of the metropolis.

Albania has had a reputation for being one of the dodgier, more obscure countries in Europe, but it’s come a looong way since its dark early noughties days. This is what travelers have been reporting as of late:

Nicosia, Cyprus

The Last Divided Capital in Europe, Nicosia is a sad, yet fascinating tale, and a modern Berlin of the sorts that never quite got its reunification.

For context, Cyprus is a Greek-majority island-nation in the East Mediterranean with a Turkish minority. In the 70s, Turkey invaded it and occupied roughly a third of the territory, including the northern half of Nicosia, effectively splitting the city in half.

The jingoistically-Greek south is currently administered by the internationally-recognized Republic of Cyprus, a member of the European Union, whereas the northern part of town is under the jurisdiction of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

No international recognition, no EU membership, but effectively its own country, nonetheless.

The division was never settled, and this remains one of the most contentious topics in geopolitics to this day. In practice, if you’re visiting Ledra Street in Nicosia today, the main thoroughfare running through the heart of the capital, you’ll eventually hit a roadblock:

There’s a border post right in the middle of the street, and in order to get from here to there, you’ll need to show your passport.

The green line running along the UN Buffer Zone is also fascinating to watch, with coffeeshops and taverna terraces literally lining barricaded alleys and narrow streets, and barbed wire providing the backdrop.

In the south, expect to pay for your unequivocally-Greek gyros in euros, and don’t be surprised by the amount of Orthodox churches per square mile. Cross north, however, and it’s the Islamic call to prayer blasting from old Ottoman minarets, old caravanserai hosting lively bazaars, and the Turkish half-moon everywhere.

If you’re going to Cyprus this year, make sure you double check the security situation beforehand. The island is dangerously-close to the Middle East, and it’s been directly-impacted by the ongoing conflict:

Bern, Switzerland

Now, here’s something you might not know about Switzerland. As much as people mistakenly peg Zurich (or, on occasion, Geneva) as the capital, neither of the country’s top financial hubs holds that title.

In fact, no city officially does, but ask any Swiss where the national capital is, and they’ll point to the much-smaller, quaint, unassuming Bern, tucked right near the Alps.

Switzerland has no official capital on paper, so to keep all its wildly diverse, culturally distinct cantons on equal footing. That said, Bern—home to about 133,000 people—concentrates a majority of the federal institutions.

But it’s far from being just another administrative hub, and that’s why it’s so quietly charming.

It’s a capital-like town with a real European soul.

The medieval core is one of the most beautiful you’ll ever see: cobbled lanes winding along ocher-colored arcaded buildings, landmark clock towers tunneled for modern trams, and palace terraces overlooking snow-capped peaks.

No wonder it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Don’t miss Zytglogge, the medieval clock with its moving figurines that is Bern’s pride and joy, and Münster (Bern Cathedral), where climbing the tower gives epic views of the city’s grid-like streets and the surrounding nature.

The winding, turquoise Aare River only adds to the alpine charm.

Zagreb, Croatia

I’m sure you’re familiar with Dubrovnik’s imposing medieval walls, hugged by the Adriatic Sea, and the glamorous Split Riva, with its palm trees and Ancient Roman flair, but who’d have thought Croatia’s capital would be anything but Mediterranean in character?

The Balkan gem may be best known for its pebbly beaches, Dalmatian stone houses, and summery aesthetics, but Zagreb, its one true metropolis, lies much further inland, practically touching Central Europe, and it actually wouldn’t look out of place in either Hungary or Austria.

Instead of waterfront promenades and laid-back coffeeshop terraces, you get wide avenues lined with Habsburg edifices, palatial complexes housing art museums, and leafy parks and plazas pulsating with city life.

The Upper Town (Gornji Grad) feels like a living museum, with narrow streets twisting past pastel-hue buildings and centuries-old churches. The beautiful St. Mark’s, with its kaleidoscopic tiled roof, is effectively the city’s symbol.

A short stroll downhill, past the soaring Zagreb Cathedral, perhaps the largest Gothic offering south of the Alps, and you’ll reach the Lower Town (Donji Grad), home to lively squares, buzzing boulevards, and pedestrianized thoroughfares flanked by bakeries and boutique shops.

Ban Jelačić Square is the central meeting point where locals, tourists, street performers, and tram lines converge, a perfect snapshot of Zagreb life.

Zagreb isn’t exactly as grand as Paris, nor as vast as London, but it’s a cultural powerhouse in its own understated way. It’s simply a shame most of the beach-obsessed tourists skip it altogether.

The city has even brought back its day-tripper entry fee for 2026 just to try and stem the bleeding.

• Instead, consider: Treviso. Just a short train ride inland from Venice, this gorgeous walled city offers the exact same picturesque canals, romantic medieval architecture, and incredible wine bars, but it completely lacks the overwhelming, chaotic throngs of tourists.

2. Barcelona, Spain: Tourism Fatigue

The Catalan capital is incredible, but the locals are officially at their breaking point.

Barcelona has been the epicenter of massive protests recently, with residents deeply frustrated by soaring rent prices and public spaces that are completely overrun.

Trying to walk down Las Ramblas in the dead of summer heat while dodging frustrated locals and massive tour groups isn’t the laid-back Spanish vibe you are looking for.

• Instead, consider: Valencia. Spain’s third-largest city gives you the ultimate blend of historic charm, futuristic architecture, and sprawling Mediterranean beaches. Plus, it is the actual birthplace of paella! You get all the world-class food and culture of Barcelona with a much cooler, welcoming energy.

3. Santorini, Greece: The Sunset Traffic Jam

We all know the iconic blue domes from Instagram, but the reality of a summer sunset in Oia involves getting shoved by thousands of cruise ship passengers all fighting for the exact same photo.

The infrastructure on this tiny island simply cannot handle the summer surge.

The roads become gridlocked, and everything from a quick taxi ride to a basic Greek salad becomes wildly overpriced.

It feels less like a tranquil island escape and much more like a highly stressful theme park.

• Instead, consider: Naxos. As the largest island in the Cyclades, Naxos boasts incredible sandy beaches, towering mountains, ancient ruins, and traditional villages. It offers spectacular, authentic Greek island beauty without the extreme crowds and inflated prices of its famous neighbor.

4. Amsterdam, Netherlands: The Policy Pushback

Amsterdam has been actively trying to push massive crowds away, literally running global campaigns telling people to stop visiting just to party.

The streets and narrow canals get so severely congested during the summer that the city loses its cozy, laid-back charm.

Furthermore, the local government has aggressively cracked down on short-term rentals and increased tourist taxes, making finding a budget-friendly place to stay incredibly difficult right now.

• Instead, consider: Utrecht. Frequently described as a “mini Amsterdam,” Utrecht boasts stunning canals with unique wharf cellars that are lined with incredible cafes right at the water’s level. It has a historic city center, a vibrant youthful atmosphere, and all of Amsterdam’s iconic charm with a fraction of the international tourists.

5. Rome, Italy: An Ancient Furnace

Rome is magnificent, but visiting the Eternal City in August is essentially walking into a beautiful, historic furnace.

The heat radiating off the ancient cobblestones is fiercely oppressive, and there is almost zero shade near icons like the Colosseum or the Roman Forum.

Trying to appreciate millennia of history while dripping in sweat alongside 30,000 other exhausted travelers shuffling toward the Trevi Fountain will test the patience of even the most seasoned explorer.

• Instead, consider: Bologna. Known as Italy’s foodie heartland, Bologna offers rich history and arguably the best culinary scene in the entire country. Best of all, the city is famous for its miles of stunning, shaded porticoes, allowing you to walk the historic streets and escape the brutal summer sun while avoiding the overwhelming crowds.

6. Amalfi Coast, Italy: Bumper-to-Bumper Coastlines

This might be the most glamorous coastline in the world, but the summer traffic is legendary for all the wrong reasons.

The famous cliffside road becomes a complete parking lot of massive tour buses and honking scooters. The picturesque towns of Positano and Amalfi become incredibly congested, and the tiny beaches are packed shoulder-to-shoulder.

The logistical nightmare of just trying to get around completely shatters the dolce vita fantasy.

• Instead, consider: The Cilento Coast. Located just south of the Amalfi Coast, this stunning national park offers miles of beautiful, unspoiled coastline, authentic seaside villages, and the incredible ancient Greek ruins at Paestum. 7. Canary Islands, Spain: A System Overload

The Spanish archipelagos have historically been the default summer getaway for millions, but the islands have hit their absolute limit.

When a destination’s infrastructure is this stretched, and the debate over mass tourism is this heated, it is best to give the islands some space to recover.

• Instead, consider: Madeira, Portugal. Often called the “Hawaii of Europe,” this Portuguese island offers dramatic volcanic landscapes, lush botanical gardens, and world-class hiking along its famous irrigation channels (levadas). It delivers an epic island adventure without the intense anti-tourism friction currently gripping the Canaries.

Japan’s cultural heart is suffocating under the weight of its own popularity.

The situation has escalated to the point where local authorities have started putting up physical barriers and completely banning tourists from entering certain historic private alleys in the Gion district due to persistent bad behavior and overcrowding.

Combine that intense local tension with Japan’s notoriously thick, heavy summer humidity, and exploring the city quickly becomes an exhausting struggle.

• Instead, consider: Kanazawa. Frequently referred to as “Little Kyoto,” Kanazawa offers immaculately preserved samurai and geisha districts, stunning traditional gardens like Kenroku-en, and incredible fresh seafood. Out of all 1,500 articles I’ve written for Travel Off Path, what we’re revealing today is one of the most shocking at first glance.

Living up to our name, one of the most off-path Dutch cities turns out not to be so overlooked at all.

We’ve covered The Netherlands end to end over the years — or so we thought.

Apparently, there’s been a well-kept secret about one artsy, off-the-wall tech hub that’s becoming one of the country’s coolest cities.

Some visitors have called it “boring”, but we’re calling it the “anti-Amsterdam” — in a good way.

Crushing tourism records in 2025, and surprisingly embracing even more visitors with an exciting new train route in the works, the lesser-known city of Eindhoven is the Netherlands’ new must-visit.

PLUS, the Netherlands is largely considered one of the safest countries in the world as you can see below.

Wait — The Netherlands Actually Wants You To Visit?

While Amsterdam’s Karens may still be in full force as the iconic European city rolled out multiple anti-tourism campaigns in recent years, that’s not a reflection of the entire country.

There are endless canal-laden alternatives with equally gorgeous waterways for more spacious strolls and bike rides, but Eindhoven is one of the more unique city breaks that doesn’t mirror Amsterdam much at all.

While one could argue the entire country is a bit quirky, that’s really the only true comparison.

But yes, Eindhoven isn’t settling with its record 2025 year for tourism, welcoming a tick under 7 million passengers at Eindhoven Airport.

They’re doubling down on trains.

Obviously, America is slacking in the train department. Heck, since I paid my California taxes today, I’m wondering how much actually went to the high-speed rail project that seems like it’ll never come to fruition.

We all know that’s not the case for Europe, though, where you can seemingly hop aboard a train anywhere.

Eindhoven has reached an agreement with Brussels for what’s being touted as a game-changing rail route for the region, set to connect this quietly booming city to Belgium’s elegant capital.

Here’s what we know so far:

• A new Eindhoven–Brussels rail link is officially in motion after signing a letter of intent
• Talks will continue this summer; the holdup is deciding between new infrastructure or sprucing up an existing rail network
• The goal is to cut down on the clunky transfers currently needed between Eindhoven and Brussels
• There is no official launch date or operator as of yet

The “Anti-Amsterdam”: Why Eindhoven Feels Like A Breath Of Fresh Air

Yes, Eindhoven has a scenic canal, but it’s not the selling point of the city like Amsterdam’s and others that build their whole brand around them.

This city has a real identity beyond tourism clichés.

Despite flying under the radar, those in the know come here because Eindhoven has carved out a reputation as a creative, forward-thinking city fueled by design, innovation, and repurposed industrial spaces, such as Strijp-S, one of the coolest hangouts there is.

Not to circle back to Belgium, but if you’ve followed us lately, you know that Antwerp is another hip up-and-comer, which may be the closest comparison as a trendsetter.

Additionally, Eindhoven was crowned the “least stressful city in the world”, which some visitors in the past have surmised to be boring, but that’s not the case.

Between wandering Strijp-S, checking out the Philips Museum or Van Abbemuseum, browsing design-forward shops, eye-catching art installations, and ending the day at a lively cafe or brewery, Eindhoven has more than enough to keep things interesting.

Why Eindhoven Is Perfect For Digital Nomads

Since Amsterdam hasn’t exactly been rolling out the welcome mat, that doesn’t mean the Netherlands isn’t great for remote workers to call home.

But first, it’s always wise to check entry requirements and our real-time safety status before venturing off to another country, especially for nomads.

What many may not realize since The Netherlands has been on the wrong side of headlines in terms of hospitality, they do indeed offer their own version of a digital nomad visa, officially known as the “Self Employed Residence Permit”, which is valid for 2 years.

One rapidly growing southern city must feel like they’ve hit the jackpot. Not known as a major hub, and largely kept hush-hush as an underrated capital, you might think North Carolinians typically have to fly out of Charlotte for anywhere requiring a passport.

But Aer Lingus opted to give Charlotte the boot in favor of another Carolina city, so they must’ve Raleigh been itchin’ for a trip across the pond.

That’s right — Raleigh just made history, welcoming its first-ever flight to Ireland on April 13.

While you may have missed out on the inaugural adventure, the Travel Off Path team is hoping Lady Luck is on your side with a tax refund, so you can put your hard-earned money to good use with a fun-filled Irish vacation.

Raleigh Quietly Becomes An International Flight Hub

Charlotte and Asheville may want to watch their backs as there are 2 trendier getaways right now in the “Tar Heel State”:

While Charlotte is being touted as America’s new next-level foodie destination, Raleigh has been creeping up the ranks — and there’s no further proof than the surprising amount of international flights in NC’s vibrant capital city.

Add Dublin to the list of impressive passport destinations, such as Reykjavik, Paris, Panama City, and fellow newcomers like Punta Cana.

Montego Bay didn’t work out for a myriad of reasons, but locals and Irish travelers are stoked for a new route — and there are still plenty of worthwhile icons to add to your passport stamp collection from Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU).

Dublin is the newest of the bunch, and just so happens to be one of the quickest flights to Europe, given its far-western location from the U.S. mainland.

And that makes the flight even more exciting — to use Ireland’s most iconic city as a springboard as RDU reps touted Aer Lingus’s connections to “England, Scotland, France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands.”

The Deets For Raleigh’s Game-Changing New Flight

Call us fashionably late to the party if you will (as I write this in my jammies), but even if you missed the blue-ribbon cutting, this route is here to stay.

In other words, it’s not one of those blink-and-you-miss-it seasonal offerings.

In fact, RDU will serve Aer Lingus flights to Dublin (DUB) 5 times per week on one of the more spacious narrow-body aircraft, an Airbus 321XLR.

Unfortunately, promotional fares were not mentioned in the official press release.

However, I took a deep dive and found the absolute best deal if Dublin is calling you:

• May 12 – May 19: $847 round-trip

Tickets are pretty hefty throughout summer, but remember, this is only to Dublin and back.

Venturing into other European cities may offer different fares entirely.

So, we did a test.

Since RDU is hoping travelers use Aer Lingus as a gateway just as much as an Irish vacay, we picked Paris as one of their mentioned destinations to see how much it costs compared to Dublin on their cheapest date:

For the record, Aer Lingus isn’t exactly a household name but as Ireland’s flagship carrier, it’s certified as a 4-star airline and rated a perfect score of 7/7 for safety on AirlineRatings.

Why Dublin Is Such An Amazing City To Visit

Before diving in to Dublin’s appeal, you’ll want to check entry requirements before stepping foot in Ireland, but the good news is it’s the only EU country not fingerprinting Americans.

Additionally, safety is always at the forefront of travelers’ minds when venturing abroad, but the good news is both Dublin itself, and Ireland as a whole, are considered remarkably safe to explore.

Dublin isn’t just a gateway city — it’s the kind of place you’ll want to linger, especially in the coming months when pub patios spill outdoors, parks turn postcard-green, and event calendars fill up fast!

Of course, no trip to Ireland in general is complete without a stop at a local pub for a pint of Guinness, though there’s plenty to do and see that doesn’t revolve around barstools and dim-lit taverns.

Now that winter drear is a distant thought, some of Dublin’s most vibrant and festive months are full speed ahead with lively patios and festivals, such as Bloomsday in mid-June.

Even though it costs a pretty penny to vacation here, you don’t have to stay within the city limits either.

Wandering Ireland’s countryside is all but obligatory to bear witness to astounding castles, rolling emerald landscapes, and the famous Cliffs of Moher if you’re up for a full-day trek.

The bottom line is Dublin makes for a great base as your main stay or holding place to venture elsewhere in Europe altogether.

To put it simply, Raleigh travelers didn’t just gain a new nonstop route — they gained easy access to one of the world’s most rewarding corners of Europe that’s safe, cultural and breathtakingly scenic.

You have to eat Khachapuri (a boat-shaped bread filled with molten cheese, butter, and a raw egg mixed tableside) and massive Khinkali soup dumplings. Georgia also has a scientifically verified 8,000-year history of winemaking, so visiting the Kakheti region is mandatory.
