This Tropical Central American Country Breaking All Time Tourism Records

I’m not sure it’s just me, but it feels like forever since this country’s name came up in here. Blame it on El Salvador’s current regional stardom, especially after Bukele completely crushed criminal gangs, or Belize’s newfound trendiness, but Costa Rica seemed to take a backseat for a while.

Not anymore.

Central America’s no-brainer, most iconic getaway is still as popular as ever. In fact, it saw a 10.4% rise in tourism this year compared to same period in 2025. Between January and February 2026, 653,959 international visitors landed in Costa Rica.

In Feb alone, 331,967 arrivals were registed. According to data from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, that’s a five-month streak of year-over-year growth.

Impressive numbers, but what is the fuss all about?

Small Country, A Plethora Of World Wonders

For a small nation-state roughly the size of West Virginia, Costa Rica packs quite the punch.

Over half of the national territory is blanketed by natural forest, with nature being central to the country’s international appeal. This is somewhere you go to unwind, slow down, enjoy a weekend away in a remote, BoHo chic jungle retreat, and soak up the tropical vibes.

It hosts roughly 5% of the world’s biodiversity, despite its small size, and between the rainforests, misty cloud forests spanned by scenic suspended bridges, and towering volcanos, you’re never exactly far from a mindblowing view here.

Oftentimes, all it takes is looking out the window.

This Is The Fastest-Growing Destination In Costa Rica

The most visited attraction in the country, Monteverde Cloud Forest is where a majority of visitors will be headed. A mystical, fog-enveloped maze of lush trails, it’s host to over 300 bird species and orchids, and it’s Costa Rica’s prime destinationf or canopy-shaded walks.

The numbers don’t lie: Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport in Liberia recorded 230,406 passengers so far this year, a 16.3% growth from a year earlier.

It’s the fastest-growing international airport in Costa Rica, and the closest major hub to Monteverde, at a 2.5 hour drive.

Although we’d still highly recommend you book a private driver, Costa Rica is relatively safe to drive in.

The country itself is probably the most advanced, infrastructure-wise, in Central America, though El Salvador is quickly catching up.

It boasts a dense road network (28,520 miles, to be precise), and near-full electricity coverage supporting tourism hubs. Paved networks link parks and beaches—none of the Honduras or Nicaragua-style dodgy dirt roads—and overall, it’s a lot safer to visit.

This Is How Safe Costa Rica Is

The U.S. State Department lists Costa Rica as a Level 2 destination, meaning Americans are not discouraged from visiting.

If they do, however, they must exercise certain precautions: avoiding commuting after dark, maintaining a higher level of situational awareness in crowded spaces, and checking credentials before booking guided activites from local operators.

The usual stuff.

This is still Latin America, though, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned from Mexico’s February crime flare-up, it’s that the security situation in the continent can deteriorate without warning. Before you fly out to Costa Rica, though, check any Travel Alerts that may be in place.

Where Are The Crowds Going?

Liberia Airport (LIR) is the main gateway to Guanacaste, a coastal stretch in the Costa Rican Pacific renowned fro tis golden sands, surfing scene, and luxury resorts.

Depending on where you go, your destination is a 25-90 minute drive.

Playas del Coco are a breezy half-hour taxi hop from the airport. These are the postcard-ready, volcanic, dark-sand beaches you see on Instagram.

A little further, some 45 mins, the Papagayo Peninsula is occupied by powerhouses like Four Seasons, on pristine coves largely untouched by mass tourism.

North America continues to lead Costa Rica’s tourism surge, with 454,889 Americans and Canadians touching down there so far this year (as of Feb).

If you’re wondering where the younger crowds are going, look no further than surf mecca Tamarindo, a 1-hour drive from Liberia Airport. It’s the trendy backpacker town on the coast, with a thriving youth hostel scene, a vibrant nightlife, and plenty of paradisiacal beaches with barrelling waves to choose from.

Peak ‘Pura Vida’ vibes, if you know what we mean.

Costa Rica’s #1 Destination

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is the busiest airport in the country right now, with 372,295 international visitors hosted in the first two months of 2026.

It serves not only the capital, San José—somewhere most tourists connect through on their way to the Costa Rican jungle—but the wider highland region.

Poás Volcano National Park is a 30 minute drive out of town, with its massive turquoise crater lake spewing sulfur fumes, and the iconic La Paz Waterfall (60 min) is a quintet of cascades surrounded by a verdant rainforest.

Keep your eyes peeled for the odd jaguar up in the trees.

Can’t get enough of Costa Rica’s natural wonders?

Irazú (1h away) is the highest volcano in the country, with moon-like craters and otherwordly views from the top.

A bumpy 2 hour journey from the capital, the dormant, cone-shaped Arenal Volcano is yet another must-see. The national park it’s enclosed within is dotted with hot springs and ancient lava flows, and there’s a plethora of unique jungle stays to pick from.

This Underrated & Safe Latin American Country Is Breaking All Time Tourism Records

When you think of El Salvador, the first images your brain conjures up are probably those of rioting gangs running amok, crime-ridden streets where the law of the strongest prevails, and, as is the case in Latin America, probably corrupt governments.

That used to be the case some five or six years ago, and then a literal miracle happened.

From a global pariah and one of the most violent countries in the world, with a shocking rate of murder per capita and urban violence, to the Switzerland of the Western Hemisphere, this tiny Central American state is now shattering another type of record.

Not to beat around the bush too much, tourists are finally flocking there in droves, and the newfound state of well-being is only part of the reason why:

El Salvador Is Living Its Golden Age Right Now

As reported by Costatur, El Salvador has already hosted over 815,000 guests so far this year, with a goal of hitting 4.2 million by December 2026.

That’s a bold strategy, especially considering that, back in 2019, prior to the current administration taking charge, it hosted roughly 1.3 million tourists annually, a large number of whom were returning El Salvadorians or business travelers.

Now, it seems the tides are turning.

El Salvador has Nayib Bukele, its controversial, hardline yet tough-on-crime President, to thank. Say what you will, he did put the house in order.

He incarcerated around 1% of the population in a major crackdown on violent crime, launched a ‘Territorial Control Plan’ to seize control of gang-dominated areas, and invested heavily in infrastructure projects.

We’re talking roads, bridges, public works, a whole makeover of the country’s largest airport, El Salvador International Airport (SAL), a renovation of the capital’s once-derelict Historic Center, and a clear, resounding message sent out to foreigners saying:

El Salvador is safe. Come visit.

Not just empty words, either: in 2019, the country had a jaw-dropping rate of 38 homicides per 100,000. In 2025, that staggering figure had dropped to just about 1.3.

For comparison purposes, Switzerland, one of Europe’s poster children for safety standards and well-being, has a homicide rate of 0.6. El Salvador is quickly bridging the gap.

On the ground, this means no more armed assaults, or at least a drastic reduction in those, home burglaries, and turf wars.

The Europenization Of San Salvador

On top of that, the Bukele administration is literally converting San Salvador, the national capital, in a city break actually worth spending money on.

No more of the hanging wires between buildings, piling trash, nor dodgy, low-cap Josés looking at you funny for being an obvious gringo: San Salvador’s once-glorious colonial core is being revitalized, with the addition of pedestrian-friendly zones, lamp-lit paved streets, and major infrastructure upgrades.

You’ve probably seen Before/After videos of it doing the rounds on X. The easiest way to explain it is this may be the first case of First Worldization ever seen in Latin America.

Perhaps not the most politically correct statement to make, but not one bit less truthful.

Millions of tourists are now headed for San Salvador to witness firsthand its rebirth, from the grandiose Metropolitan Cathedral, a Neo-Gothic marvel towering above the downtown’s mid-rises, to the restored National Palace and the leafy, sun-drenched Plaza Libertad.

A Magnificent Nature Practically Unspoiled

Much like Costa Rica at one point, El Salvador also has a lot of potential, nature-wise, that is yet to be unleashed.

All along its Pacific coast, you’ll find beautiful golden-sand or even black volcanic beaches, backed by lively surfer towns which are trending with European backpackers as of late.

As far as major coastal hubs go, La Libertad is probably the place to go at the moment: it boasts some of the best surf breaks in Central America, including Punta Roca, known for its long, barrelling waves, El Tunco, one of the prettiest beaches in the entire country, and a relaxed, fishing town vibe.

For the hiking enthusiasts, Santa Ana Volcano, or as it is known in the local indigenous language, Ilamatepec, offers breathtaking crater views, and a glassy, mirror-like laguna sitting right in the middle.

Though lesser-explored, Izalco Volcano is not to be missed: called the Lighthouse of the Pacific, due to its constant, fiery lava shows, visible to ships far out at sea, it’s surrounded by lush jungle and historic coffee plantations.

For a more convenient and easier-to-reach spot, just outside San Salvador, El Boquerón is yet another volcano with equally spectacular crater panoramas.

Looking for some of those cloud forests, with winding trails, views of multiple lava-spewers, and harboring a rich wildlife? Cerro Verde National Park is a short 45–60 minute drive from the city, out in the western highlands, and it looks like a mini Costa Rica, except less developed, and more off-path.

Just how we like it.

Oh, and don’t forget Santa Ana, a picturesque town near the park, often described as El Salvador’s most beautiful. It is dominated by a Gothic cathedral, one of the largest in Central America, and its colonial downtown, dotted with colorful plazas, centuries-old buildings, and cobbled streets, is an absolute delight to wander.

State Of Emergency & Curfews In Effect For This Popular South American Destination

Ecuador is one of the most diverse and fascinating destinations in South America. You can stand on the equator near Quito, hike active volcanoes, and explore the unmatched biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands all in a single trip.

But right now, the situation on the mainland is intensely volatile. If you have a trip booked to Ecuador this spring, you need to understand exactly what is happening on the ground.

The country is currently locked in what the government has officially designated an “internal armed conflict.” To combat a severe spike in gang violence, drug trafficking, and organized crime, sweeping States of Emergency have been implemented, and as of early March 2026, the United States military is officially involved in joint operations on Ecuadorian soil.

Here is a breakdown of why this is happening, what the official government advisories are saying, and how you should navigate this if you have an upcoming flight.

The Ground Truth: Why The Crackdown?

Over the last few years, Ecuador has seen a massive surge in organized crime, heavily concentrated in its coastal provinces. Gangs are battling for control of different areas, which has led to targeted killings, armed robberies, and even the use of small explosives near businesses and government buildings.

In response, the Ecuadorian government has essentially declared war on these criminal groups.

To give the military and police the upper hand, a State of Emergency is currently active across multiple provinces, including Pichincha (where the capital city of Quito is located), Guayas (home to Guayaquil), Manabí, and several others.

U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Involvement: As of March 3, 2026, U.S. and Ecuadorian forces launched joint operations targeting these organizations.
What This Means for Travelers: While U.S. personnel are reportedly on the ground to “advise and assist” rather than participate in direct combat, the militarization of the country has increased exponentially. Joint initiatives include enhanced operational coordination and information sharing directly at airports and ports. Travelers should expect heavy, heavily armed military presences and potential delays at major transit hubs as these operations unfold.

The Curfews (March 15 – 30, 2026)

To further restrict the movement of these gangs, the government has implemented a strict nighttime curfew.

From March 15 to March 30, 2026, a mandatory curfew will be enforced between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM in the following provinces:

Guayas (This includes the major international airport hub of Guayaquil)
Los Ríos
Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas
El Oro

If you have a late-night flight arriving in Guayaquil during this window, you must coordinate with your hotel for verified, secure transportation. According to the State Department, “Travelers with a valid boarding pass going to or coming from the airport are exempt from the curfew.”

This is not the time to be wandering the streets or hailing a random cab off the curb at midnight, pre-arrange your transport.

Government Travel Advisories: Red Zones and Minefields

Both the U.S. State Department and the Canadian government are urging citizens to “Exercise a high degree of caution” when traveling anywhere in Ecuador right now. However, certain regions have been elevated to strict “Do Not Travel” status.

The Coastal Cities: Non-essential travel is highly discouraged in the province of Esmeraldas and large swaths of Guayaquil, where the gang violence is most concentrated.

There is one major bright spot in all of this data: The Galápagos Islands.

The government advisories specifically separate the Galápagos from the mainland warnings, advising travelers to just take “normal security precautions.” The islands remain deeply insulated from the violence plaguing the mainland coast. Historically considered Peru’s third-best tourist destination, Arequipa used to be the place you ‘fit’ into the itinerary if there were enough days left. After, you know, Cusco, Lima, and all your Sacred Valleys and Rainbow Mountains and stuff.

Recently, however, a growing number of tourists are veering off the beaten path—not that we’re trying to be self-referential—and spending time in Arequipa.

This isn’t just another name on a map, or somewhere you pass through on your way from Point A to B: it’s a sprawling regional capital home to over 1.19 million residents, with a unique mix of history, culture, and geography that makes it stand out from the rest.

For starters, it is nicknamed La Ciudad Blanca, or The White City: a majority of the buildings in the colonial Historic Center were built by the Spanish using local sillar, a volcanic stone extracted from the surrounding mountains.

Also UNESCO-protected, this same Centro is packed full of stunning Baroque churches, café-bordered plazas, and elegant colonial mansions dating back to the 16th century, perfectly preserved.

There’s plenty of historic structures to be found around town, but if we were to narrow it down to the top 3 most important, these would definitely be:

Plaza de Armas: the central square, and the beating heart of Arequipa. It’s where you go to admire the ornate white-stone buildings, buy snacks from friendly local vendors, and people-watch
Catedral Basílica: located right on Plaza de Armas itself. Originally dating back to the 1600s, it’s been rebuilt a number of times, mixing Renaissance and Baroque features
Santa Catalina Monastery: essentially a miniature city inside Arequipa, it has narrow streets, vibrant-colored walls (in stark contrast with the largely-white townscape), and old cloisters

The coolest thing about Arequipa is that it sits in a valley surrounded by volcanoes, with El Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu to name a few.

These provide the most breathtaking backdrop to the city’s church towers and Spanish-style civic edifices, and, beyond being beautiful, these mountains are the main reason Arequipa is so fertile and productive.

After all, volcanic soil is the key ingredient behind its rich agriculture.

Peru’s Food Medina, Second Only To Lima

Ancient monuments, stunning natural vistas, and lush nature are perhaps 50% of the reason why tourists flock to Peru every year. The remaining 50% is food.

We don’t know that for sure, but we know.

If you came here for fresh farm-to-table fare, new, indescribable flavors, and culinary surprises around every corner, Arequipa is probably second only to Lima in terms of gastronomical prowess. If the capital is the country’s Food Mecca, Arequipa can be the Peruvian ‘Food Medina’.

A beef-and-herbs-stuffed spicy pepper, topped with a creamy béchamel-esque sauce, rocoto relleno is Arequipa’s pride and joy, and there’s nowhere better to try those than Sol de Mayo, a charming colonial-inspired eatery near Plaza de Armas.

Ocopa Arequipeña is a hearty local dish of boiled potatoes smothered in a thick sauce made with peanuts and huacatay (an Andean herb), topped with cheese, and if they’re feeling particularly generous, a boiled egg crowns the plate.

Chicha, run by renowned Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio, is said to serve the best ocopas in town, and given the chef behind it, expect nothing less than exceptional.

The Peruvian Grand Canyon

Last but certainly not least, Arequipa is the main base for trips to Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest, and perhaps the main natural wonder in southern Peru.

About 10,730 feet deep at its deepest point, it’s roughly twice as profound as the Grand Canyon, and this dramatic depth creates towering cliffs and natural terraces that attract both adventurous rock climbers and casual sightseers alike.

To the bird geeks out there, this is the home of the Andean condor, and at viewpoints like Cruz del Cóndor, you can actually see the majestic winged creature in flight, as they vertiginously glide down the ravine only to conquer the skies again.

Other than wildlife, the canyon is dotted with ancient agricultural terraces, built thousands of years ago by long-lost civilizations that preceded the Incans. Some are still in use today by local farmers, especially those from indigenous communities like the Collagua and Cabana peoples.

Sure, you can venture down to Cancun and many other notable locales with cookie-cutter itineraries, but summer is the perfect time to let your adventurous side shine.

As one of Latin America’s most diverse destinations with kaleidoscopic villages, staggering volcanic backdrops, and practically undiscovered beach hideaways, travelers looking to experience more than getting up early to reserve a poolside lounger should turn to Guatemala for their next vacation.

Call us crazy, but Guatemala is arguably the best alternative to Mexico.

Think about it: it’s right next door, has very similar cuisine, and in many cases, is even more affordable than our amigos south of the border.

You just assume there’s a flight.</p> <p>That, and the fact that <a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/ive-visited-over-50-us-cities-here-are-the-5-ill-never-go-back-to/" type="link" id="https://www.traveloffpath.com/ive-visited-over-50-us-cities-here-are-the-5-ill-never-go-back-to/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oakland</a> and San Jose are nearby too…</p> <p>But this time, SFO gets all the glory (not that there’s ever a time Oakland wins a PR battle).</p> <p>This week, popular Latin American airline Avianca announced it will soon have a monopoly on <strong>The Bay’s only nonstop route to Guatemala</strong>.</p> <p>According to <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/news/avianca-new-route-san-francisco-central-america/" type="link" id="https://thepointsguy.com/news/avianca-new-route-san-francisco-central-america/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Points Guy,</a> this game-changing route is set to serve San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) on a regular basis throughout the summer.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Panoramic-View-Of-A-Volcano-And-Lake-Region-In-Guatemala-Central-America.jpg"></a></figure> <p>In other words, it will initially be <strong>seasonal</strong> to test the waters.</p> <p>Just in time to burn through your well-deserved PTO, you can cash it in from <strong>June 1 through August 31</strong>.</p> <p>From SFO, the flight is slated to depart at 7:45 a.m. and arrive at 2:15 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.</p> <p>Conversely, from GUA, the flight is scheduled for departure at 1:20 a.m. and arrives at 6:25 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.</p> <p>There is one caveat, however.</p> <p>Avianca also serves San Salvador, El Salvador (SAL). Let’s dive in, shall we?</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>North Korea: Thanks, Captain Obvious</strong> 🇰🇵</h2> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Tourists-walking-in-downtown-Pyongyang-North-Korea.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Unless you’re Dennis Rodman, you may not have any desire to visit what’s known as the “Hermit Kingdom”, but hear us out…</p> <p><strong>Americans have officially been banned from entering North Korea</strong>, one of the most isolated and tightly controlled nations on Earth, <strong>since 2017</strong>, after the horror story of U.S. citizen Otto Warmbier being detained and tragically passing for reasons still yet to be officially determined.</p> <p>In fairness, we’ll let you play judge and jury, but no matter which borders you find yourself in, travelers are expected to respect local laws anywhere in the world. U.S. officials have long warned that Americans face an unusually high risk of arbitrary detention in North Korea, often without access to due process or consular services.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Korea-DMZ-from-South-Korea-perspective.jpg"></a></figure> <p>As a result, the <strong>U.S. government forbids citizens from entering North Korea to this day</strong>. In their own words, this decision is driven by “the serious risk of arrest and long-term detention”.</p> <p>Since the 2017 ban, North Korea has <strong>reopened for tours</strong>, even holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a surprisingly impressive new beach resort last year.</p> <p>But Americans will not have a chance to visit even if they dared as the U.S. <a href="https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/2025-05-16/national/northKorea/US-to-extend-North-Korea-travel-ban-until-August-next-year/2308752" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extended</a> this ban <strong>until August 2026</strong>.</p> <p>The closest you can currently get to breathing North Korea’s smog-filled air is the famous demilitarized zone (DMZ) in South Korea, but even then, we hear it’s pretty tense!</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Cuba: Vacation Mode Deactivated </strong>🇨🇺</h3> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Tricycle-passing-colorful-row-of-historic-buildings-in-Havana-Cuba.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Want to visit one of the most timeless destinations on the planet where Starbucks has yet to ruin colonial facades?</p> <p>Then you’re sort of in luck….</p> <p><strong>Cuba <em>does</em> welcome U.S. citizens</strong> and <a href="https://expedia.com/affiliate/SdNrdPO" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow">does have resorts</a>, but you shouldn’t call yourself a “tourist” at all at any time or you could potentially face harsh penalties.</p> <p>Americans are technically prevented from vacationing in Cuba, meaning if you do want to visit this timeworn Caribbean paradise, you have to do some extra planning (and perhaps even convincing).</p> <p>You see, the current Administration issued a <a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/americans-banned-from-vacationing-in-iconic-caribbean-island-for-5-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">5-year ban</a> on Americans vacationing here, while also understanding Cuba thrives on tourism, given their stringent government.</p> <p>By the way, this is nothing new. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Senior-Writer-Sam-Sears-on-Havana-Cuba-beach-in-2017-2.jpg"></a></figure> <p>I had the pleasure of (minus extreme food poisoning) visiting Havana in 2017, when decades-long icy tensions began to thaw, and I still had to claim “Support for the Cuban people” as a reason to visit and book an Airbnb to align with my reasoning.</p> <p>But look at babyfaced me — he sure looks like he’s on “vacation” (if you catch my drift). 😉</p> <p>Kidding aside, in order to legally visit Cuba in accordance with current policy, you must claim one of 12 categories found <a href="https://cu.usembassy.gov/services/traveling-to-cuba/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>.</p> <p>For the record, I was never questioned for claiming “Support for the Cuban People” at any time.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Niger: Visas No Longer Issued To Americans 🇳🇪</strong></h3> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Grand-Mosque-of-Agadez-in-Niger.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Look, we get it — it’s highly unlikely many Americans are scoping out Niger as a vacation destination any time soon.</p> <p>This off-path African nation is one of <span style="box-sizing: border-box;">the aforementioned <em>Level 4</em> destinations we mentioned</span>…</p> <p>While every country has its own unique appeal, we won’t pretend Niger is the latest up-and-coming African country — that would be <a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/undiscovered-mediterranean-country-named-among-top-destinations-for-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Algeria</a>.</p> <p>However, Niger (along with Chad) has implemented ‘tit-for-tat’ bans on U.S. tourists despite certainly needing an economic boost.</p> <p>Niger is one of the countries America has restricted as of late for the foreseeable future, and Niger has pulled the ol’ “if you can do it, I can do it” maneuver.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Traditional-mud-and-clay-homes-in-Niger.jpg"></a></figure> <p>According to our <a href="https://apanews.net/niger-makes-tit-for-tat-visa-restrictions-on-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sources</a>, an undisclosed diplomat was quoted as saying, Niger is completely and permanently prohibiting the issuance of visas to all U.S. citizens and indefinitely banning entry to its territory for nationals of the United States”.</p> <p>So, why is Chad not listed too?</p> <p>That’s a tricky one. <span style="box-sizing: border-box;">While Chad was one of the first to implement a ban on U.S. tourism for the very same reason, it is <a href="https://td.usembassy.gov/alert-update-on-visa-and-entry-ban-for-u-s-citizens-june-12-2025/" target="_blank">still allowing</a> those who were issued a visa <em>before</em> <strong>June 9, 2025</strong>.</span></p> <p>*<em>Right before publishing, we discovered <strong>Mali</strong> and <strong>Burkina Faso</strong> are following suit with their own <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgrdjx1d1vjo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reciprocal policies</a>, refusing to honor entry to U.S. citizens. Most travelers fly into Managua, the aforementioned capital, only to be disappointed if that’s their base (hence many tourists opt for Granada).</p> <p>What’s missed in between Granada and the gorgeous southern coast is the vibrant cultural city of Leon.</p> <p>If travelers gave this delightful city of colonial streetscapes, whitewashed cathedrals, and unforgettable volcanic excursions a fair shake, it would certainly ease up some foot traffic in Granada.</p> <p>Leon boasts affordability, safety, and off-path appeal for tourists seeking out new experiences over the same-o, same-o itineraries. Let’s dive in!</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Costa Rica Expects A Busy Winter Season</strong></h3> <p>We at <a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Travel Off Path</a> claimed earlier this year that Costa Rica may have lost its luster, and it was backed by a myriad of safety concerns, higher than usual prices, and dwindling visitor numbers.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Costa-Rica-flag-in-San-Jose.jpg"></a></figure> <p>We’ll touch on safety again shortly, but Costa Rica has clearly regained its popularity, at least as a relaxing winter escape.</p> <p>Both of Costa Rica’s main entry points, Liberia and San Jose, <strong>boast average highs of 78 degrees or higher from December through March.</strong></p> <p>A far cry from icy roadways and cold shoulders (oh wait, that’s just my ex), Costa Rica offers an array of attractions and experiences that are incredibly joyful to explore in a diverse tropical playground.</p> <p>While it remains to be seen if your winter vacay will match the country’s famed “Pura Vida” lifestyle, some would argue it’s more marketing jargon than the current way of life right now.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Aerial-view-of-Manuel-Antonio-National-Park-in-Costa-Rica.jpg"></a></figure> <p>That being said, there’s no denying Costa Rica is truly one of the most captivating destinations in close reach to the States — if it’s safe.</p> <p>Home to luxury resorts, such as <strong>Secrets Papagayo</strong> (where I’ll be vacationing soon), unknown beach towns dotting pristine shores, and immaculate rainforest adventures with vibrant wildlife and natural wonders, Costa Rica will always be a draw, and the expected influx of 300,000 compared to last “high season” proves it.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Latest Travel Alert Raises Eyebrows: Tourists Are Being Harmed</strong></h3> <p>As if one travel alert wasn’t enough, Costa Rica said, “hold my <em>Imperial</em>“.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/People-lounging-at-Hermosa-Beach-Costa-Rica.jpg"></a></figure> <p>The latest U.S. Embassy-issued alert is heavy on crime, and tourists are feeling the brunt of it.</p> <p>Unlike nearby El Salvador, which has cleaned up its act, <strong>Costa Rica is seeing a spike in the wrong direction.</strong></p> <p>As such, the Embassy highlighted 3 concerning events directly affecting visitors simply going about their business:</p> <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Criminal groups have targeted foreign-owned businesses and homes for crimes that included robberies, break-ins, and extortion</li> <li>Criminal groups have targeted travelers, forcing them to withdraw substantial amounts of cash from ATMs or initiate wire transfers</li> <li>Tourists have reported home invasions and armed robberies at their Airbnbs (and other rental properties)</li> </ul> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Woman-surfing-on-a-beach-in-Costa-Rica.jpg"></a></figure> <p>As a result, <strong>the U.S. Embassy is insisting Americans follow these helpful tips</strong>, such as:</p> <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Set daily withdrawal limits for your debit cards/bank accounts</li> <li>Avoid traveling alone, especially after dark</li> <li>Avoid booking Airbnb properties with reviews mentioning security incidents</li> <li><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/top-5-best-travel-insurance-companies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Purchase travel insurance</a> that includes loss or theft of valuables coverage </li> </ul> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Costa Rica’s Other Alert Doesn’t Pass The Sniff Test</strong></h3> <p>Just before the Embassy released its second alert for the week, the prior warning was a real doozy!</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Puerto-Viejo-Costa-Rica-near-Limon.jpg"></a></figure> <p>In case you missed it, this one is a lot less worrisome, as you can beat it to the punch, unlike an out-of-nowhere mugging at an ATM.</p> <p>This advisory was actually categorized as a <a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/us-embassy-issues-new-travel-alert-for-costa-rica/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health alert</a>.
