Taking a page out of Iceland’s playbook, there’s one surging Asian city reviving a lesser-known airline under a new name, and it began operations last month.

Let’s hope for better results as both of Iceland’s WOW Air and Fly PLAY have now gone kaput despite jaw-dropping fares from major American hubs…

Parata Air (formerly Fly Gangwon) is one of the newest airlines in Asia’s aviation sector, along with Sun PhuQuoc Airways, except the former has bold plans to enter U.S. skies despite first commencing service less than a month ago.

As someone who has been eyeing an Asian adventure lately, I can tell you one thing is for certain — reaching Seoul from the U.S. mainland is expensive!

Unlike Japan’s Zipair, there’s no true low-cost option to fly direct to Seoul from any U.S. city — until now.

Thanks to Parata, a revamped Seoul-based budget airline, there will soon be 2 exciting new routes from major American cities for those of us ballin’ on a budget.

Parata Fills A Void: Cheap Flights To Asia’s Most Cultural City

Whether it be K-Pop concerts, downright sinful Korean barbecue, or the only country where 7-Eleven stores are cool, immersing in South Korea’s fascinating culture is truly a bucket-list experience no matter how you choose to do it.

Though getting anywhere in Korea (yes, the Southern one) tends to come with a hefty price tag when you book your flight.

That’s all set to change with the arrival of Parata Air.

“We will transcend the boundaries of full-service and low-cost carriers. We don’t plan to adhere to the existing distinction. We aim to be an airline that starts with the services and routes that are essential from the customer’s perspective, while providing an experience that stands out in the market.”

Here’s an example of why Parata is much needed in U.S. skies:

A round-trip flight from LAX for a weeklong trip to Seoul costs a minimum of $1200 for a connecting flight, and $1310 for a direct flight via Air Premia, which is surprisingly categorized as a Korean low-cost airline.

With an expected launch date to be set for Summer 2026, I chose the middle of summer for sample fares for comparison’s sake, and obviously, they’re pretty steep.

This is why Parata is destined to be a success, unlike the previous examples of Iceland’s failed budget carriers, since flagship Icelandair isn’t nearly as costly (once you land, it’s another story — yikes!).

2 Major U.S. Airports Set To Welcome Parata Air

Parata’s first venture into America will be a pair of our most connected airports, making the trip as seamless as possible.

According to SimpleFlying, Parata has already dotted their i’s and crossed t’s with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) with the intention of being granted a spot at the aforementioned Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as well as Las Vegas’s Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).

Both of these cities become a literal hot mess come summertime, so if it all goes according to plan, Seoul makes for the perfect escape from the desert heat into one of Asia’s most sought-after cities.

Just know these plans are not finalized. Currently, Parata Air only has 4 planes to their name, and these planned U.S. routes would take place on a spacious Airbus A330-200 when (*knock on wood*) it comes to fruition.

Why Seoul Has Become A Powerhouse Must-Visit Destination

Seoul is a name we all know, but over recent years, it’s become a tourism powerhouse.

Largely influenced by pop culture with the raging success of Squid Games and the ever-growing K-Pop phenomenon, not to mention even the tiniest of map-dot towns across the U.S. opening Korean BBQ eateries, Seoul has earned a seat at the table with Tokyo, Hong Kong, and the likes.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Seoul has a global reputation for being safe at all hours. Whether you’re hankering for some late-night street grub or want to belt out your favorite K-pop tune at a karaoke hole-in-the-wall, you don’t have to keep your head on a swivel like other mega metropolises.

It’s also a city where modern tech meets ancient palaces. Arguably the most sightly photo op is the 600-year-old Gyeongbokgung Palace, an absolute must-visit.

The only thing Seoul hasn’t had going for it is cheap flights, but now Parata has a chance to change that. Once here, the city is incredibly simple to get around, and you won’t break the bank unless you splurge on a 5-star hotel.

After Europe unofficially proclaimed its Railway Renaissance, and Latin America followed suit with multiple exciting new train routes, it was only a matter of time until Southeast Asia finally jumped on this bandwagon.

This time, it’s Vietnam doing the honors, and if you’ve ever traveled up and down the country by train, you know how painfully slow those can be.

We’re talking severe delays, an average speed of only 31 mph, and outdated infrastructure still largely dating back to colonial times.

It’s been a long time coming, but soon enough, you’ll be able to board a new high-speed train in Hanoi, the vibrant capital of Vietnam, and travel directly to Ha Long Bay:

Direct Train From Hanoi To Ha Long Will Soon Be A Reality

A natural wonder of Vietnam and the world’s most beautiful bay, Ha Long is a popular weekend getaway for travelers based in Hanoi.

Dotted with imposing limestone karsts, jutting out of the water like pillars, and famous for its unique floating villages and paradisaical islets, covered in dense jungle, this UNESCO-protected reserve is currently best reached by bus from the capital.

Usually, tourists will book guided tours starting early in the morning from Hanoi, and returning late in the evening, though that can be seriously exhausting:

Depending on traffic, it can take anywhere from 2.5 hours to 4 hours to cover the 100 miles separating Hanoi from the entrance of the bay. Feasible as it may be, it still leaves you operating on a tight schedule, with very little to no flexibility.

When Will The Train Launch?

Lucky for us tourists, Vietnamese billionaire and head of VinSpeed Phan Nhat Vuong is keen on building a Hanoi-Ha Long Bay high-speed train, to the tune of VND138.93 trillion (roughly US$5.3 billion).

The project is expected to be approved this quarter, and construction is scheduled to begin immediately, with completion targeted for the last quarter of 2027. The official commercial launch is already set for the first quarter of 2028.

The 74-mile railroad will link the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Hanoi to Tuan Chau Ward, the getaway to Ha Long Bay. It will also pass through the Bac Ninh Province and the city of Hai Phong, boosting connectivity in the underdeveloped north of Vietnam.

The train will have a maximum speed of 217 mph, and at the time of its launch in 2028, there will be a departure every 60 minutes.

From 2030 onward, VinSpeed plans on doubling the frequency to every 30 minutes.

More Train Routes Coming Your Way

The ambitious project has already been included in the Vietnamese Government’s rail network planning for the remainder of the decade, so chances it will not go ahead, or it will be severely delayed—remember the Tren Maya saga?—are slim at this point.

Besides the Hanoi-Ha Long line, VinSpeed is confident that national authorities will green-light a high-speed train between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, in the south of the country.

Though there are multiple trains operating on this route, they run much more slowly.

There are 957 miles separating the Vietnamese capital from the more southerly metropolis, and believe it or not, trains average roughly 27-36 mph.

Americans Must Get A Visa Before Flying To Vietnam

If you’re visiting Vietnam as a U.S. passport holder in the future, bear in mind that there are certain rules in place that make traveling a bit more bureaucratic than what you may be used to.

To sum it up, unlike your European friends, you can’t just show up at the airport and board a flight to Vietnam, as easily as that, without holding a pre-authorized eVisa. This can take days, if not weeks to process, depending on their backlog, so don’t leave it until the last minute.

Joining in on a trend that seems to be taking the world by storm, Sri Lanka is the next country to tighten entry rules for Americans.

An island nation in South Asia, famous for its lush jungles, unspoiled coastline hugged by azure seas, and sprawling capital, Colombo, a vibrant melting pot of cultures with Indian, British, and Dutch influences, Sri Lanka has been rising in popularity among travelers.

However, if you’re a U.S. passport holder and you’re visiting from October 15, you will need to get a digital entry permit before you leave home; otherwise you won’t be allowed to board your flight, let alone enter Sri Lanka:

Understanding Sri Lanka’s Complex Visa Rules

Sri Lanka has never been exactly known for having an uncomplicated visa system. From e-Visas, to e-Visas On Arrival, to regular Consulate-issued visas, there were plenty of options at hand, yet somehow, that never made it easier for tourists planning visits.

Those flying to Sri Lanka had to keep up to date with regulation changes on a daily basis, and this year, not much has changed.

Although it was announced back in July that the Sri Lankan Government was, in fact, scrapping e-Visa fees for foreigners and making it less bureaucratic for them to travel to Sri Lanka, they now seem to be eyeing a complete 180.

Not only will the fee be maintained, at least for the time being, but starting this fall, Americans (and every other tourist, regardless of nationality) will no longer be eligible to fly to Sri Lanka without obtaining prior authorization.

Introducing The New Sri Lankan ETA

As confirmed by several Sri Lankan Embassies, including those in Paris, Jakarta, and Ankara, travelers heading to the South Asian nation must now apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) ahead of departure.

Though they are not described as such, ETAs are effectively digital visas: in countries that enforce them, and recent examples include the United Kingdom and Saint Kitts and Nevis, you’re not eligible to travel until you’ve got ‘ETA approved’.

Getting an ETA typically involves completing an online form, where you must answer a series of personal and security questions, upload a photo of your passport, and pay a fee. The fee varies wildly between countries, ranging from $21 in the U.K. to a more biting $68 in New Zealand.

Regarding Sri Lanka, despite their promise of a fee waiver, we’re still uncertain whether the new mandatory ETA will incur an additional cost. For the moment, it’s safe to assume it will.

At the moment, citizens of only 7 nations are exempt from paying a fee to enter Sri Lanka: China, India, Russia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan—as you can see, Americans are not part of the select group.

How To Get The Sri Lankan ETA

The new Sri Lankan ETA can be obtained via the official Sri Lankan ETA website, and right now, the fee is $50 for a double-entry permit. The process is the following:

• Access the official website at eta.gov.lk
• Complete the online form (this may include uploading a picture of your passport)
• Pay the $50 fee
• Wait for the confirmation email within a couple of minutes or hours.

Beside the ETA, your U.S. passport must have at least 6 months of validity left from your date of departure from Sri Lanka, and at least one full blank page for entry and exit stamps.

The Sri Lankan ETA is valid for 6 months from the date of issue, so you will have 180 days to enter the country after you’ve obtained it, and it allows you a stay of up to 30 days. If you plan on staying longer, you have the option to extend the visa through local immigration offices.

So far this year, Sri Lanka has hosted over 1.7 million tourists. In September alone, 150,000 foreign entrants were recorded.

This already marks the country’s best first semester in terms of tourist arrivals, and should the trend continue, it will potentially surpass 2018’s all-time high of 2.3 million in a year.

It seems the era of low-bureaucracy travel is officially over. After the United Kingdom rolled out its ETA back in January, affecting all Americans, and Saint Kitts and Nevis followed suit in recent weeks, the next country to introduce a digital entry permit is the laid-back Laos:

One of the most welcoming nations in Southeast Asia, the ‘Land of a Million Elephants’ will be adding a mandatory step for all Americans, and any foreign traveler who’s visiting for tourism.

In addition to applying for the e-Visa or a Visa On Arrival, they will now need to complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF), an arrival card that must be presented to border officers upon arrival.

New Digital Arrival Card Required For Travelers Arriving in Laos

According to the official statement put out by the Department of Immigration of Laos, ‘all foreign nationals and stateless people’ entering Laos are now required to complete a digital arrival card at the agency’s official website.

This applies not only to when they enter the country, but also when they leave, and in both instances, it must be done at least three days before the intended date of arrival and departure.

It’s unclear at this point whether you can be barred from boarding your flight, right at your point of departure, for failing to produce a completed arrival card.

However, it has been suggested that non-compliant travelers will not be allowed into the country until they’ve finalized the procedure.

Checklist For Going To Laos In 2025

This has been the new guideline as of September 1, 2025.

In sum, as a U.S. passport holder, you need to ensure you have all the following documentation when traveling to Laos:

• A valid passport with at least two full blank pages for entry and exit stamps
• An e-Visa, or a means of purchasing a Visa On Arrival, when landing in the country
• The completed Arrival Card
• Upon exit, a completed Departure Card

What Information Is Required By Laos Authorities?

As far as forms go, the Arrival/Exit Cards are exceedingly detailed, with the following information being required:

Arrival Checkpoint

• Airport or port of entry
• Arrival date

Personal Information

• Full name
• Gender
• Date of birth
• Place of birth
• Nationality
• Occupation
• Country of origin
• Phone number

Passport Information

• Passport number
• Date of issue
• Expiry date
• Country of issue
• Copy of passport information page
• A selfie of the applicant holding their passport open on the information (photo) page

Purpose of Entry:

• Options include Diplomatic or Official Visit, Business, Tourism, or Transit

Means of Transportation

• Air, car, or bus
• Number of means of transportation

Travel Details

• Country of origin
• Inform them whether you’re traveling with a group or not

Visa Information

• Type of visa requested
• Visa number (if an e-Visa or other form of visa has already been obtained in advance)
• Date and place of visa issuance (if applicable)
• A photo of the valid visa (if applicable)

Address In Laos

• Name of accommodation or hotel
• Province
• District
• Municipality
• Intended check-in date
• Intended check-out date

Were it not for the absence of financial details, we wouldn’t blame you for thinking this lengthy questionnaire looks, well, like a full visa application.

The good part is that it is completely free (as of now), and once submitted and approved, travelers will be issued a QR code that must then be scanned at the border gate upon arrival in Laos.

Less Wait At Laotian Airports

Currently, only 4 airports are impacted, those being Wattay International, which serves the national capital, Vientiane, Luang Prabang International, the main gateway to the namesake, culture-loaded province, Pakse (in the Champasak Province), and the First Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge.

The latter is a land crossing from Nong Khai, in Thailand, to Vientiane.

The goal is to introduce the new measure at all of Laos’ international entry points, but full coverage is only likely to be achieved in 2026.

As the Government has put it, this new system will reduce waiting lines upon arrival, as it will do away with physical forms and unnecessary queuing, and it will also make the job of border officers a lot easier, as much of the information they require from travelers will be transmitted beforehand.

Of course, there are always two ways this could go: either a significant improvement in the border experience or a bureaucratic nightmare. I guess we’ll see how it all pans out now that it’s in place, and after the first batch of incoming travelers reports back on their experience.

Following in the footsteps of hugely popular destinations like the United Kingdom and Schengen Europe, yet another iconic country, certain to feature on the bucket lists of millions of Americans, is set to roll out an ETA, or Electronic Travel Authorization.

Within a few years, Japan will require prior permission for U.S. passport holders and all other visa-exempt travelers to fly to the country.

As you might know, these entry permits are becoming increasingly common worldwide, so it’s hardly surprising that the darling of Asia would be adding its own. But what are the exact requirements of the Japanese ETA, and when is it coming into force?

ETAs Are The New Norm Now

Here at Travel Off Path, we’ve made it our main goal to keep you updated in regards to the ever-changing entry requirements traveling to every single country.

From introducing the TOP Checker, where you can verify visa rules at your destination as an American, to keeping up to date with regulations that may make traveling abroad more complicated, trust us, we’re on it, and we’ve got your back.

On that note, if there’s one word or acronym you’ve been reading quite a bit around here lately, it’s ‘ETA’. But what exactly is an ETA, and why is it such a recurring topic?

To keep it short and simple, an ETA is a form of digital visa, though its fierce defenders will go out of their way to insist it is not a visa. In theory, you can’t enter an ETA-requiring country without first applying and being granted one.

So let’s break it down further:

What Are ETAs, After All?

An ETA stands for Electronic Travel Authorization, and several countries have introduced variations of it in recent decades, including the United States, which introduced one in 2008.

Yep, 2008, you just didn’t know about it.

As an American, you don’t need a digital permit to fly to your country of origin as you are, well, a citizen, so it’s not like this ‘ETA thing’ is new: you’ve just been lucky enough to avoid it all this time as very few countries reciprocated the measure.

Now, it’s tit for tat. As of this year, you can no longer fly to places like London, or even the dreamy Caribbean getaway of Saint Kitts and Nevis, without asking for permission first, and in the near future, that will be the case for much of Europe—and Japan, of course.

Enter The JESTA

As confirmed by Japan’s Ministry of Justice, the Japan ETA, named JESTA, is coming into force in 2028.

It will act as a ‘pre-travel screening mechanism’, facilitating security checks, while ensuring a smoother entry for new arrivals. That all sounds good enough, except soon enough, without a valid JESTA, you won’t be able to travel to Japan as an American.

The system will apply to all foreign nationals who currently enjoy visa-free access to Japan, so you should prepare for new administrative requirements if the Asian country is on your bucket list for this decade.

It is expected that JESTA checks will be carried out upon check-in at the airport, and upon landing in Japan, and further information, including implementation, validity of the ETA, and the fee, will be revealed in due time.

How Will This JESTA Thing Function?

There’s not a lot we know about the JESTA yet, but based on other ETA systems already we place, we do have an idea of how it might work.

Usually, applying for an ETA involves filling out a form, which can take as quick as 5 minutes, or a lengthy 20-30 minutes, depending on how detailed the questionnaire is. In this form, you’re usually requested to provide information pertaining to your private life, character, and travel plans.

Those aren’t negotiable. You have to, otherwise you don’t get your permit.

Once that’s completed and submitted, you then have to pay an ETA fee. This can range from only a few dollars, to a whopping $72 (keep that in mind if you’re going to New Zealand anytime soon).

It’s never a guarantee your ETA will be approved, so it’s important you answer questions truthfully and attentively:

File Your Application Carefully

A single wrong tick in the wrong box can render you ineligible, and you don’t want to splurge money on new applications like that, as fees aren’t reimbursed even if an ETA is denied, or worse even, be forced to get an actual visa.

Actual visas often involve attending consulate interviews and filing a lot of paperwork. It’s a whole other ball game, so word of advice? Don’t play with your ETA application.

If your ETA is approved, and unless you’re flagged due to security reasons (i.e. maybe you’re a wanted criminal), you should receive it directly on the mailbox provided during the application, so once again, be extra careful when filling out the form.

You have no idea how hard it can be to retrieve an approved ETA if your email had a typo, or it wasn’t valid.

The JESTA Is Not The Only Requirement

With an ETA, you can then fly to your destination. Keep in mind that it is still not the only requirement to be observed. It does not automatically grant you entry into any country: in reality, it serves as a laissez-passer, ensuring your right to travel there in the first place.

Once at the border, you must continue to satisfy the usual entry requirements, such as presenting a valid passport, observing the number of blank visa pages left (yep, that’s also important), and showing proof of accommodation, and outbound flights if requested.

You can have a valid ETA, and still be denied entry if you aren’t able to fulfill the other obligations.

So there you go. That is (roughly) how traveling to Japan will feel like from 2028 onward, but worry not: we’ll be sure to keep you on the loop as new information is released.

As a born-and-raised Texan, I can say if there’s one thing Dallas lacks, it’s genuine culture.

No designated Chinatown or Little Italy — just endless Mexican restaurants where Texans can’t even allow that, having to cattle-prod ‘Tex’ to the ‘Mex’, creating their own fusion nobody asked for.

In fact, one could argue that the world-famous Texas State Fair is the most cultural aspect of Dallas, but even then, how ethnic can a deep-fried bacon-wrapped jalapeño be? And no, buying a Gucci handbag at NorthPark or dining at legendary Campisis’s doesn’t make you an Italian fashionista or Tuscan wine connoisseur, either.

Well, North Texans now have a thrilling new opportunity to broaden their world perspective with the 7th U.S. flight just announced one of Asia’s most affordable and vibrant metropolises.

Texas travelers can now park their oversized trucks at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and jet off to Taipei, a far cry from the usual road trip to Buccee’s.

EVA Air’s New flight from Dallas To Taipei

EVA Air is a 5-star Taiwanese airline. Not only does EVA boast a spotless safety record, according to Airline Ratings, but should your flight be interrupted, any delays shouldn’t take terribly long since they have to get the plane back to base in Taipei.

EVA flies to over 60 destinations globally with DFW being the latest to join the party. The others are:

• Chicago (ORD)
• Houston (IAH)
• Los Angeles (LAX)
• New York (JFK)
• San Francisco (SFO)
• Seattle (SEA)

The airline’s latest venture is set to operate 3 weekly flights out of Dallas beginning October 3, 2025, a first for a direct Taipei-Dallas connection.

Forget Tokyo! Save Money In Taipei

Is Taiwan a country or is it a Chinese territory? That’s a debate for another day.

What’s undebatable is Taiwan’s capital city is surprisingly affordable, offering a vast array of attractions without bruising your bank account.

In fact, travelers can score an unlimited train pass to explore all of Taiwan starting at $67 for a 72-hour span and going up from there.

Last year, we reported that Taipei’s average hotel rate was $125, which seems pretty reasonable. But I did some digging for you and found a few deals too good to pass up right around the time of the new flight launch.

Stay at 5-star Grand Hotel Taipei in October for $125, right on par with our last reported figures or take it down a notch to 4-star Hotel Cozzi for just $110 or take it one step further with a 3-star chic boutique stay at ART’OTEL Ximending for just $80.

It’s reasonable to expect to keep your daily food budget under $20 unless you visit one of the city’s trendy rooftop restaurants.

Taipei’s Culture: Night Markets, Street Eats, & Ancient Temples

So you’ve traveled the long-haul 16-hour flight from Dallas, and now you’re ready to hit the ground running!

Okay, maybe a jet-lag recovery nap first since you’ll be arriving around 4 am anyway…

But after that, you’ll soon discover Taipei is one of Asia’s biggest thrills. Hit up the buzzing bars in Xinyi District, wander the expansive grounds of the National Palace Museum, and invigorate your senses at numerous night markets, but Shilin is undoubtedly the most popular.

It’s next to impossible to go hungry in Taipei, but don’t expect burnt ends and zesty slabs of ribs like you’re used to back home.

In fact, how about some “stinky tofu”? This Taiwanese staple isn’t as bad as it sounds. I tried it in Xiamen, China, an island near Taiwan, and it’s actually really good.

Does it smell like a petting zoo? Yes. Does parmesan smell like soiled socks? Yes, but you sprinkle it on your pizza, so give it a whirl.

It’s one of the cheapest street grubs you’ll find along with oyster omelets, beef noodle soup and Taiwanese fried chicken, which is probably the best gateway street food for the typical Texan.

Lastly, a visit to Taipei without seeing the eye-popping array of timeless temples is unthinkable. Check out Dalongdong Bao-An in the Datong District.

Backed by a recent report showcasing the world’s best destinations to kick off 2025 with your budget in mind, Asia stands out the most.

Truth is, winter is an incredible time to globetrot, and not just nearby Caribbean Islands and Mexico’s hotspots.

Asia may seem like a far-flung land of bucket-list wonders, and it is, but let’s not take for granted how connected our skies have become.

You can travel to a majority of Asia’s metropolises with just a single layover from the U.S. For example, Thailand has no direct flights (for now), but still remains Southeast Asia’s tourism titan.

Malaysia’s capital is renowned for its safety, affordability, and phenomenal architecture, ranging from sky-scraping marvels to preserved structures of its former British colonization.

With an average price of $62/night, you’ll find cheap stays, no matter your preferred style of accommodations.

Luxury travelers will enjoy great rates at such places as 5-star Amari Kuala Lumpur for $71, and even the Ritz Carlton is only $160 on Priceline in February – unheard of!

Bangkok: Real Estate May Be Surging, But Hotels Are Still Affordable

Truth be told, I’ve been keeping an eye on Bangkok’s condo market as an Airbnb investment, and I think I missed my chance to score dirt-cheap condos.

The good news for travelers, however, is Bangkok still offers an array of fancy schmancy hotels to high-rise condo rentals for an incredible value.

With temperatures in the high 70s at this time of year, Bangkok is a splendid destination before the summer humidity takes over.

Between floating markets, night markets, rooftop bars, never-ending temples, and incomparable nightlife, travelers never have an issue finding their niche in Bangkok.

However, my personal favorite district is Chinatown (Yaowarat) for action-packed people-watching, sensational eats, and cheap shops to haggle.

The Border Telegraph reports Bangkok’s hotels average out to $65/night, so visitors can easily treat themselves to high-end stays, such as the 5-star Grand Mercure Bangkok Atrium beating the average at $61.

Ho Chi Minh City: An Insanely Cheap Gateway To Vietnam’s Wonders

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is a vast urban jungle of sensory overload from the aromas of street food vendors, the sounds of an endless sea of scooters, and eye-popping sites like the Notre Dame Cathedral and intriguing museums like War Remnants Museum (only $1.57 admission)

There will never be a dull moment exploring this city, but most travelers prefer to run the gamut since there are so many more enticing destinations, from Da Nang’s beaches to Hanoi’s cultural delights.

No matter the reason for your trip, Ho Chi Minh is incredibly cheap, with sunny 78-degree days.

Like Bangkok, hotels average $65/night, but you can score great deals below the average, such as 4-star Odys Boutique Hotel for $36 or level up to a 5-star stay at Windsor Plaza Hotel for only $57 in February.

Phnom Penh: Southeast Asia’s Up-And-Coming City

Perhaps the least known on this list, Phnom Penh is Cambodia’s vast capital city but is typically overshadowed by tourist hotspot Siem Reap, a much smaller city beaming with history and impeccably preserved sites like world-renowned Angor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Phnom Penh is ready to take center stage, though, as the Los Angeles Times just ran a feature on Cambodia’s newfound fame as an up-and-coming destination.

Prices are jaw-dropping here. This city of traditional markets, grand palaces, and more-than-affordable luxury makes for a great base as you discover Cambodia’s lush nature, immaculate ruins, and temples.

The weather hovers around 78, and hotel rates average an even $50/night, but believe it or not, you can score luxury hotels like Snowbell Hotel for just $37 on Agoda.

Mysterious aromas, rhythmic city sounds, and a way of life that is truly magnetizing – this whirlwind of senses is what you’ll find exploring one bustling Asian city.

With a young population driving rapid growth in the last decade, it’s a fitting testament for a country only reaching a consistent level of peace since the 1980s.

Once ruled for centuries by China, followed by France, then ongoing conflicts with the U.S., and ultimately neighboring Cambodia, the fascinating country of Vietnam has become one of Asia’s biggest thrills.

For a nation whose timeline is scarred by war, you’d almost never know it with such friendly locals welcoming all walks of life with open arms.

Vietnam is certainly not a one-stop shop, but a great starting point is the capital city, Hanoi.

Super safe, insanely cheap, and a dizzying array of experiences will captivate solo travelers instantly as you’ll discover a world unlike anything back home.

A Culture Seeker’s Dream

I remember that, in college, I went through a short-lived motorcycle phase. I was more determined to get a motorcycle than I was to graduate.

But my family talked some sense into me, ultimately deciding to avoid buying a highway death missile and stick to four wheels.

Hanoi is the exact opposite of what my family instilled in me. It’s safe to say if you’re not on two wheels, then you’re actually not getting the full Hanoi experience.

Almost everyone has a motorbike of some sort as a cheap, efficient way to get around, and it’s much safer than it appears; it’s all part of the rhythm of the city.

As previously influenced by both Chinese and French colonial rule, Hanoi offers visitors a unique blend of cultures.

More so on the French side in terms of cuisine and architecture, like the astounding French Quarter. And more so on the Chinese side in terms of deeply rooted traditions and customs that remain today, like the unmissable silk shops you’ll encounter.

You’ll find picturesque pagodas, eye-catching temples, and action-packed markets set within this metropolis of weaving scooters and quaint alleyways; the type of place that gives you permission to get lost as you never know the unexpected delights you’ll discover.

Besides the Old Quarter (another visit), the ‘North Star’ of many Hanoi tourists is the iconic Hoan Kiem Lake, a great place to recharge away from the city chaos.

Everything Is Cheap! And I Mean EVERYTHING!

Since I’ll scold you if you don’t rent a pair of wheels, let’s get that one out of the way.

To start your epic trip off right, there are numerous rental agencies costing $5 to $10 per day.

Next, let’s talk food. Street food is a way of life here at all hours of the day.

It’s not unreasonable to find a cold local beer for just 25 cents, while a bowl of hot noodles may cost 90 cents to a dollar.

Circling back to Hanoi’s strong French influence, this translates to food too. If you’ve been to Vietnamese restaurants in the States, chances are you may have tried, or at the very least seen, Banh Mi’s on menus.

These delicious sandwiches are French-inspired baguettes filled with a variety of savory ingredients and cost under $3.

The list goes on and on… Anything with noodles and hot broth you’ll definitely want to try!

And don’t forget to start your day with a Vietnamese coffee. To really get your juices flowing, you can sit at numerous cafes along the famous Hanoi Train Street, where a train whizzes by a little too close for comfort but makes for an amazing photo-op.

Accommodations certainly won’t break the bank either. If flying solo, there is no need to stress booking lavish digs either.

Hanoi is the second cheapest tourist destination in the world, after all.

Hostels start out at just $3, but you can comfortably stay at 4-star hotels too, like the Riverside Hanoi Hotel as low as $31 per night.

All in all, you can easily get by under $50 per day if you choose.

The Elephant In The Room

Not to get political here, but not many Americans are visiting Afghanistan right now. Partly because it’s dangerous and partly because, well, it’s slightly awkward because of the U.S.’s involvement.

When nations go to war, it’s important to remember people are not their governments. Vietnam seems to hold no qualms with Americans visiting despite the dark blemish on both countries’ past.

Vietnam as a whole is very safe, and you don’t have to feel awkward exploring a country our elders controversially invaded in the ’60s.

Frankly, it’s a fascinating and important topic ranging from Woodstock to the invasion itself. And there may be no better place to delve into this complex timeline than Hanoi’s Vietnam Military History Museum.

Asia is one of the most in-demand continents for digital nomads globally.

Not only is it inherently fascinating, boasting an immense cultural wealth certain to appeal to Westerners, but it is also, for the most part, far more welcoming towards foreigners and incredibly cheap to live in.

If you don’t exactly fit in with the multi-million Dubai entrepreneurial crew, and Europe’s visa rules are far too complex to navigate, the Far Orient is the perfect home base for working while enjoying a higher quality of life––and spending far less on it.

On that note, here are 4 amazing Asian countries where both living costs can average $2,000 or under, and easy-to-apply Digital Nomad Visas are widely available:

Philippines

An archipelagic nation in Southeast Asia hugged by teal-colored seas, the Philippines is an up-and-coming nomad haven offering affordable options for long-term accommodation, inexpensive food, and great weather for most of the year (minus monsoon season).

Some of its busiest workcation hubs include Manila, a vibrant capital combining Spanish colonial forts and modern skyscrapers, Cebu City, where you’re as likely to find European-inspired Baroque cathedrals as you are Taoist temples, and tropical island getaway Palawan.

Based on Numbeo estimates, it costs roughly $869 per month to live in the Philippines with rent, with particularly-low prices observed for food and transportation: eating out in the Central Market in Manila, you can find a range of Filipino delicacies from only $3.57.

What Are The Requirements For The Philippines Digital Nomad Visa?

Normally, foreigners can only be in the Philippines for up to 30 days visa-free, but as reported by VisaGuide, nomads are eligible to stay for a rather-generous 2 years by applying for the Philippines Digital Nomad Visa.

Essentially, they must meet a certain income requirement, currently estimated to be over $24,000, provide a clean criminal record as well as proof of engagement in remote work, and health insurance covering the 2-year stay is also required.

The best part is nomads in the Philippines are considered non-tax residents, meaning they live in the country, but as they are not employed by a Philippines-based business, and thus not involved in local business activities, they aren’t subject to local income tax.

Thailand

Up next is Thailand, affectionately called The Land of Smiles, with bustling national capital Bangkok, Chiang Mai, a UNESCO-listed, temple-dotted city, and a beach-fringed Phuket Island, with all ranking as popular workcation spots.

Out of those, Bangkok is the definitive winner, owing it to its thriving expat scene, abundance of laptop-friendly eateries, legendary nightlife––probably the best anywhere in Asia––and most importantly, remarkable inexpensiveness.

Living costs will typically total $1,290 in Bangkok, if you’re eating local and your Airbnb rental is a 1-bedroom apartment in a residential zone, and though prices can increase slightly on the islands, Thailand as a whole remains budget-friendly.

What Are The Requirements For The Thailand Digital Nomad Visa?

Thailand’s Digital Nomad Visa is pretty straight-forward, though it may not be suitable for middle-income workers: you must hold a passport currently valid for at least 6 months still and your annual income must mount up to over $80,000.

It’s not like relocating to Thailand as a nomad is exactly a breeze, compared to the 2-month visa-free stay as a tourist, but if you have the money for it, it’s entirely doable, and once approved, you may then remain in the country for up to 15 years!

There is yet another appealing benefit: instead of the 35% tax rate applicable to regular residents, nomads are granted a major discount, paying only 17% in taxes, and in some cases, they could be eligible for tax exemption if their income originates from overseas.

Japan

The darling of American in Asia, Japan is best-known for its sprawling urban centers, stunning nature, millennia-old rites and delectable cuisine, and despite not being as cheap as the other entries on this list, it’s been surging in popularity with digital nomads lately.

Whether it’s a neon-lit Tokyo, pagoda-dominated Kyoto, or an electric Osaka, there are co-working spaces galore, and if you’re not the splurging type, there are plenty of cheap eats in restaurants costing from as little as $6.95, not to mention monthly rental starts from $626.66.

Overall, Numbeo reports it costs an approximated $1,641 – $2,215 to live on a budget in a major city––that’s definitely on the pricier end for Asia, but we don’t know a single nomadic American who wouldn’t be happy living in dreamy Japan on under $3,000 a month.

What Are The Requirements For The Japan Digital Nomad Visa?

As an American citizen, you can already enter Japan visa-free for up to 3 months, and there are no known restrictions on carrying out remote work from within the country, so long as your source of income isn’t Japan-based and your primary reason for traveling is tourism.

That being said, you may opt for the just-launched Japan Digital Nomad Visa, granting you a 6-month stay––double the tourist visa––and believe it or not, the financial threshold for eligibility is lower than Thailand’s!

Other than the usual documentation and background checks, like health insurance, a clean criminal record and proof of online job, you must earn a minimum 10 million Japanese yen annually (don’t worry, that translates into a reasonable $69,666 as of October 2024).

Asia has long been a popular destination for digital nomads watching their budgets. It’s a great place to stretch your buck as far as possible.  

And now there’s a new budget-friendly hot spot to look out for.  

The Global Intelligence Unit has created a comprehensive report of the world’s best digital nomad destinations.  

The top-ranked Asian country where digital nomads live and work is officially Taiwan.  

Taiwan also came in 12th place overall in the global arena, meaning that it’s a destination well worth considering for digital nomads, especially for those who don’t want to flash the cash.  

Here’s why:  

Why Digital Nomads Should Consider Taiwan 

Taiwan is an incredibly beautiful country that ticks so many boxes.  

A subtropical climate, outstanding natural beauty, gorgeous beaches, and modern vibrant cities too. Check, check, check, check!  

On top of all of this, living here won’t break the bank.  

On average, the monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Taipei is between NT$8,000.00 and NT$25,000.00 ($263–$823).

However, if you choose an off-the-beaten-path destination outside of the city, your rent will be considerably lower.  

Eating out here is cheap too, and the street food is delicious.

Less than $5 will fill your tummy with a street food meal and some good company at the same time.  

Locals are friendly and welcoming to foreigners and digital nomads: there are no anti-tourism protests here!  

Taiwan was also one of the first countries in the region to legalize same-sex marriage back in 2019 and has robust anti-discrimination legislation in place, making it a safe country for LGBTQ+ nomads to explore.  

Taiwan Is Small But Perfectly Formed  

From a practical point of view, it’s worth mentioning Taiwan’s small size.

The country is around half the size of Scotland for Brits like me. Or ever so slightly bigger than Maryland for U.S. readers.  

Rather than being a drawback, this could actually work to the advantage of a savvy digital nomad!  

You can explore absolutely everything the island has to offer with relative ease.

The capital of Taipei tends to be the most popular spot for digital nomads, boasts incredibly high internet speeds, and has the largest number of coworking spaces.  

But you aren’t welded to city life. Taipei is just 30 minutes away from the lush green nature of the Yangmingshan National Park.

There is no entry fee to explore this park, so if you’re on a budget, this is a great place to visit.  

And getting around Taiwan is a breeze, too, as the country has a reliable high-speed rail network.

In real terms, this makes what is already a small country feel even smaller and easier to explore.  

Public transport is affordable. The Metro (known as the Mass Rapid Transit or MRT) costs NT $20 (61 cents) – NT $65 ($1.96) a ticket in Taipei.  

If you want to take the high-speed rail and explore the length and breadth of the country then you’ll pay between NT $35 and NT $2,500 ($1 – $76) depending on the journey you want to take and the class you choose with non-reserved tickets being the cheapest option.  

A New Digital Nomad Visa For Taiwan? 

Although full details of the scheme have yet to be released, Taiwan announced last month that it intends to launch a dedicated digital nomad visa.

This is great news as, up until now, there hasn’t been an official digital nomad visa in the country.  

The new visa will make Taiwan an even more appealing option for digital nomads.  

Taiwan will be the 4^th country in the region this year, after Japan, Thailand, and South Korea, to launch a digital nomad scheme.  

So far, we know that the visa will have a 6-month validity period and that the Minister for the National Development Council in Taiwan, Paul Liu, hopes it will attract new talent to the country.  

Though this new digital nomad visa scheme has been proposed, it will not come into effect until it is approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  

In the meantime, prospective nomads can apply for an Employment Gold Card.

This is a work permit, residency permit and re-entry permit in one handy document that is relatively easy to apply for and allows professionals to live and work in Taiwan for up to 3 years.
