Take it from me, someone who was watching Cancun’s flight departure board like a hawk, that Mexico is indeed safe to visit after recent unexpected chaos.

There’s no need to rehash what gave vacationers south of the border a scare, but truth be told, I couldn’t have been in better hands than Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe.

It felt like a safe haven, even if the world outside seemed anything but.

This was my second time vacationing in Cancun, with the first just so happening to be another Hilton property.

No offense to Paris Hilton’s parents, but I have to pick one over the other. Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe gets the trophy.

With only speckles of seaweed visible, waking up to the sound of waves, a wrap-around swim-up bar, numerous infinity pools, a transcendent massage that soothed muscles I didn’t know I had, and many dishes that were truly a 10/10, Cancun truly won me over this time around.

I found myself saying, “I understand the hype now”.

If you want to be in the heart of the action, while simultaneously craving relaxation, this all-inclusive smack dab in the Hotel Zone is just the place, where everything is taken care of for you so you can do just that — relax.

As blissful as it was all-around, the one aspect that surprised my girlfriend and I most, especially since she’s a hotel manager, was the fact it was sold out our whole stay and not once did it ever feel crowded.

That’s right — not once from starting our day at the all-but-obligatory omelette station to capping it off with fun, late-night parties like

So, let’s start there, shall we?

Sleep In! You Don’t Have To Reserve A Poolside Lounger

I’ve been to 44 countries. Suffice to say, I have not stayed at all-inclusive resorts in every country.

Good luck finding one in Moldova…

But I have stayed at more hotels than I can count, and I am one to hold a grudge against those that don’t come as advertised.

You know —like the first time I stayed at a Motel 6 in Portland, Maine and they didn’t ‘leave the light on for me! Clearly, I’m over it…

I’ve also stayed at hotels that were definitely sold out and felt every bit overpacked, whether it was the lobby bar with no seating or waiting for the elevator for what felt like eternity.

There’s not one time that became a headache at this Hilton.

Let me be clear: we had Enclave status (a blue wristband that gave us access to a private lounge, among other perks like snagging a souvenir bag), but this had nothing to do with escaping crying kids or Karens waking up at the crack of dawn to reserve a whole poolside lounge.

Even if it did, there was no need. For a Cancun Hotel Zone resort, that’s basically unheard of.

There are more than enough elevators scattered around, ample poolside seating, and finding a prime spot on the beach was easy breezy, too.

Just make sure to make reservations for certain restaurants like Noriku (Hibachi) and Flama (Steakhouse), or our favorite, Maxal (Mexican) — where every dish and cocktail was a 10/10.

Though Flama’s sinful ‘burnt cheesecake’ was no joke! We may never go back to The Cheesecake Factory again…

The bottom line — take advantage of your room’s blackout curtains and sleep in. Don’t let an alarm clock take you out of “vacation mode”.

We walked down to the pool no earlier than 11am and scored breezy lounge chairs in front of the infinity pools 2 days in a row, followed by unblocked shaded seats overlooking the Caribbean with servers cheerfully bringing us Piña Coladas from the hidden tiki-esque beach bar, Cocomar.

A Spa To Die For

Again, I’ve been to 44 countries. No, I haven’t been to a spa in all of them either…

That said, almost every resort I’ve had the pleasure of vacationing, I’ve gladly partaken in an array of different treatments.

I may bang out articles for a living on my couch, but aging stops for no man.

In this case, I walked into cleverly named The Spa with a body feeling like it should be receiving senior citizen discounts, and walked out feeling like I could run a marathon — the massage was seriously that good.

I’ve never had a masseuse so masterfully work different areas of concern with precision. The way she twisted me into a human pretzel and surgically dug in her elbows into back muscles and tendons I never heard of years of (dreadfully) watching Grey’s Anatomy with my now ex-girlfriend, apparently taught me absolutely nothing about anatomy.

But it’s not just massages. You can enjoy a full spa day by what their website describes as a “sensory journey” with cold plunges, saunas, and sensory pool.

They even offer rituals derived from ‘Mayan herbalism’ if your Chichen Itza excursion got you in the spirit.

The Spa is open 9am to 7pm every day. While you do need a reservation for access, this is yet another example of how uncrowded the resort felt, overall.

They were extremely accommodating with all requests, even when we needed to make a last-minute change.

Unbeatable Views & Steps From Gorgeous Beach

As renowned as Cancun may be, my first trip to Cancun was in the middle of an unprecedented seaweed invasion, turning the waters a greenish-brown hue, uninviting for swimming.

The waters couldn’t have been more blue, living up to every Cancun postcard you see in trinket shops.

Speaking of trinkets, we were barely bothered by Mexico’s infamous beach vendors making their rounds along the beach.

We saw more police on ATVs than vendors, which was nice to see given the uncertainty of what happened in Puerto Vallarta.

Unfortunately, our Enclave room was overbooked (hence we knew it was sold out), but there’s no bad room on the whole property.

While every room’s balcony faces the beach, even when you walk through the front door, you’re welcomed by a peaceful waterfront lagoon that’s dead quiet.

We were given a 10th floor room (not an Enclave suite — so we missed out on oceanfront access and small amenities like an upgraded mini bar and nightly turndown service).

To be honest, I wouldn’t go back and change it. I loved our room, especially the balcony.

Even being tucked away from the beach, you could still hear crashing waves and it was far enough to avoid party noise if you preferred staying in.

That’s what room service is for, right?

Call us pigs, but we call it vacation mode — we ordered room service every. single. night.

We were always given a 40 minute estimate, but our order arrived in a fraction of the time for 2 out of our 3 orders — yet another example of next-level efficiency even when they’re at max capacity.

Our stay was great. It’s a trip we’ll be talking about for years to come given how recharged we felt.

The only negative marks were a long check-in time (roughly an hour; unrelated to being sold out), some baristas didn’t know how to properly make a latte, and we didn’t get an Enclave room like we were looking forward to — but did enjoy the perks, such as dedicated pools and a private beach oasis.

Overall, both of us agreed the next time we have the travel itch for Cancun, Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe tops our list!

Lackluster as the region may be at the moment, with a noticeable decrease in visitor numbers, there’s one smaller, more peaceful island escape nearby that is quietly stepping into the spotlight, and as a matter of fact, stealing some of its thunder.

A car-free haven only 2 hours by road from Cancun, Isla Holbox is swimming directly against the current.

Despite the regional fatigue, it has seen a 10% increase in hotel occupancy this year, and all of us at Travel Off Path can see why!

The Most Peaceful Island In The Mexican Caribbean

At a length of only 26 miles and an even less-impressive width of 1.2 miles at its widest point, Holbox looks unassuming to the odd observer at first, but as it turns out, it’s one of Mexico’s best islands for a truly laid-back tropical getaway.

Without, you know, the usual bachelor party crowds.

It is basically a quaint island with just enough development to keep things chill, where people go to reconnect with nature, slow it down a notch, and escape the hectic nightlife the Mexican Caribbean has become known for.

Picture white-sand beaches running for endless miles (well, as many miles as the compact landmass will permit), sandy streets where the only traffic is golf carts and bikes, and shallow swimming spots, no big waves.

Though there are a handful of five-star properties on the island, the overall vibe is beach hammocks and Bohemian barefoot luxury:

How Expensive Is Holbox?

Our go-to pick, Casa Las Tortugas, is one of Holbox’s mid-to-upper-range accommodation options.

A classic beach retreat, it features a no-frills beach bar, hammocks right by the ocean, and a surprisingly well-equipped spa (rooms start from $190-a-night).

For something a little more Boho-chic, Nomade Holbox is your port of call: adults-only, with a nature-inspired design, and only a few steps away from a beautiful palm-lined beach, it offers all the exclusivity Cancun escapees want ($500+ per night).

Hey, hey, hey, don’t close the tab just yet.

Yes, some hotels on Holbox can be pricey, if not pricier than Cancun’s, but the good thing about the island is that it caters to travelers of all budgets. You really don’t need to burn through your savings on an all-inclusive beachside stay to enjoy the island’s natural wonders:

NÁAY Boutique Hotel sits right on Punta Coco, one of the most beautiful beaches around, and prices average $130–150 per night. It’s way more affordable, and still stylish.

For the very budget-conscious young traveler, Che Holbox Hostel & Bar is a safe-enough option, with dorm beds starting from $20-a-night. It’s roughly a 15 min walk from Playa Holbox, the main beach, and a further 30 min walk to Punta Coco.

What To See In Holbox

Holbox only has one main settlement, which gringos have baptized Holbox Town.

It’s definitely worth checking out for its colorful street art, small art galleries, and family-owned cantinas dishing out all your Caribbean favorites, but Holbox’s true charm lies in the unspoiled nature:

Though most travelers pick out a sunbed in Punta Coco and barely move during their long weekend, the most stunning natural scenery in Holbox (if you’re asking us), is over in Punta Mosquito:

Shallow sandbanks frequented by elegant pink flamingos, warm waters, and palm-flanked shores that look like the perfect Mexican postcard.

From June to September, you can also swim with whale sharks, as Holbox is one of the world’s top spots for this particular activity. If you’re visiting in winter, however, it’s the perfect season for hitting the bioluminescent beaches at night.

They’re famous for their colorful plankton, which glows underwater on moonless nights. Shared night tours start from only $30 per person, and it’s a must-do experience.

For the adventurers among us, you’ll be thrilled to know Holbox is cut through with mangrove canals leading to hidden lagoons, and these can be easily explored by kayak.

You can also book boat tours visiting nearby uninhabited islets, where marine life thrives.

Is Holbox Mexico Safe To Visit?

The Mexican Caribbean is one of the safest destinations south of the border, as verified by the U.S. Department of State.

Cancun and its wider region remain at Level 2, which means Americans are not discouraged from visiting and must simply ‘exercise greater caution’ in certain situations, such as withdrawing money from an ATM, and being mindful of no-go zones.

In Holbox in particular, violent crime is extremely rare, and your main concern is primarily petty theft. This typically affects tourists who leave valuables unattended on publci beaches, or who aren’t particularly aware of their surroundings in crowded areas.

The closest international airport to Holbox is Cancun International Airport (37 miles south), and if you’re not resorting to public transportation to get there (which we wouldn’t recommend anyway as it is quite slow, and may involve changes), booking a private transfer in advance is highly preferred.

Before the highly anticipated Maya Train, Cancun was tough to traverse beyond the usual hotspots such as Tulum, but exploring the region and peeling back the layer of many hidden gems has become almost obligatory nowadays.

There’s no denying the secret has long been out on Isla Mujeres, becoming a destination unto itself.

But what about other island escapes with fewer footprints and more serenity?

That’s what Isla Contoy is all about.

Boasting gleaming white sand, vibrant turquoise waters, and lush forestry of swaying palms, this unsung day trip is a must-visit for those who can snag a reservation.

With minimal boat traffic and dedicated focus on sustainability, you’d be hard pressed to find clearer waters with “so much room for activities!”, such as snorkeling and guided hikes.

Is It Even Possible To Make A Reservation?

When millions of tourists visit, and only 200 people are allowed, it might seem like playing the lottery to land a beach lounger in Isla Contoy.

But we’re happy to tell you that math ain’t mathin’; the odds are actually in your favor.

Tours can sell out weeks (and sometimes months) in advance, so you’ll likely miss a last-minute excursion.

It’s advised to plan ahead with a legitimate guide — the only way to experience the island.

How to score an Isla Contoy reservation on your next Cancun vacation:

• Typical tour price: about $100 – $175 per person
• Departures leave early morning from Cancun, Puerto Jurez, or Isla Mujeres
• Prepare for a full-day trip (roughly 7–9 hours round-trip)

Another beachgoer loved their experience overall, but warns nature’s most annoying bloodsucking pests 🦟 can be a nuisance with no chemical sprays or lotions allowed on the island.

The most negative reviews are years ago and complain about pricing, but there’s nobody dogging the pristine beauty of the island and the crowd-free experience that’s certainly hard to come by in such a popular city.

Is Isla Contoy Sargassum Proof?

It’s hard for us humans to stop what Mother Nature has in store. That being said, there’s no place this side of Mexico that is truly free of sargassum during the unavoidable invasion of icky sea gunk.

However, Isla Contoy is a map-dot in the open Caribbean, so you have better odds of missing heavy buildup on the shoreline.

Numbers like that usually command respect. But we at Travel Off Path don’t trust algorithms; we trust experience. So, we checked in to see if the legend lives up to the hype.

The verdict? It does, but not for the reasons you might think.

Sandos dropped a massive bombshell at the start of 2025: The resort has officially gone Adults-Only.

This isn’t just a policy tweak; it’s a complete vibe shift. Here is our honest, deep-dive review of the new, energetic, and upscale Sandos Cancun.

The New Vibe: “Chic Party,” Not “Spring Break”

Let’s get one thing straight immediately. When we say “party resort,” you probably picture plastic cups, cheap beer, and college chaos.

This is not that.

Sandos has pivoted to a “boutique lifestyle” energy. Think high-end beach club, not frat house. The crowd is diverse, ranging from late 20s to 50s—people who have jobs, money, and taste, but who still want to get loud and have fun.

Around 1:00 PM most days, the energy shifts. The live DJ takes the stage, the dancers come out, and the vibe turns electric. We’re talking foam parties, high-production themed events (the “Angels and Devils” party was a standout), and serious entertainment staff who know how to work a room.

If your goal is to read a book in total silence by a library-quiet pool, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you want to be “seen,” sip premium cocktails, and float on an inflatable flamingo while talented dancers perform on the pool deck, this is paradise.

The Beach: The “Impossible Blue”

Sandos sits on one of the most prime stretches of real estate in the Hotel Zone.

The views from the property are, frankly, ridiculous. We are talking about that “impossible blue” water that looks Photoshopped until you see it with your own eyes.

The resort offers full beach service with loungers and cabanas (for a fee). It doesn’t get better than this for sunbathing.

The Insider Warning: You need to respect the ocean here. The waves in this part of the Hotel Zone can get rough. It isn’t a swimming pool. However, we found a calmer spot nearby and spent over an hour in the water. Just watch the flags and don’t be a hero.

The Rooms: Views To Die For

We stayed in a room with an ocean-view balcony, and honestly, we could have spent the whole trip right there.

The rooms are cozy, but they nail the essentials. The beds are incredibly comfortable—critical after a day of day-drinking in the sun.

Housekeeping was spot on. We didn’t have to ask for anything twice. The daily room service breakfast was prompt, hot, and the perfect way to start the day while staring at the Caribbean.

Key takeaway: If you can upgrade to the ocean view, do it. Waking up to that sunrise is worth every penny.

Dining: The “Cake” Secret

As an all-inclusive, you have access to five restaurants and four bars. We found the food to be consistently solid, with enough variety that you won’t get bored on a week-long trip.

The Mexican theme nights were a highlight, offering endless opportunities to try local flavors.

The Insider Tip: Do not skip the dessert station at the buffet. The pastry team here is on another level. The cakes are made fresh daily and they were a “WOW” moment for us every single time.

Wellness: Detox to Retox

If you are the type who likes to earn their margarita, their gym and spa is legitimate.

They offer oceanfront yoga sessions which is a great way to kickstart the day before the DJ starts spinning.

The spa is world-class. We are talking 13 treatment cabins, a sauna, steam bath, Jacuzzi, and a cold plunge tub. It is the perfect place to reset.

The One “Con” You Need To Know

We promised you an honest review, so here is the only downside we found.

Because Sandos is situated next to a massive resort tower, the three infinity pools lose the sun around 3:00 PM.

The Fix: It’s simple. When the shade hits the pool, move to the beach. The sun stays on the sand much longer, and it’s a quick walk down. Just plan your tanning schedule accordingly.

The Bottom Line

The shift to Adults-Only was the right move for Sandos. They have carved out a specific niche in Cancun: a place for adults who want high-energy fun, Instagrammable moments, and luxury service without the stiffness of a “couples-only” retreat.

The staff was friendly but not over-the-top or “in your face,” allowing you to enjoy the party on your own terms.

If you want a quiet week of meditation, look elsewhere. If you want to sip champagne in a foam party with a chic, international crowd, Sandos Cancun is back on top for 2025.

That being said, if you time it right, you can still beat the typical spring break crowds if you book early March or mid-to-late April.

We at Travel Off Path have been tracking this for a while, especially after 400 new police officers with body cameras were added to Cancun’s force earlier this season. The big question for travelers is simple: does this make your trip feel safer… or more stressful?

Let’s break down what’s actually happening and how to use this security surge to your advantage.

What This 7,000-Person Operation Really Is

Local officials describe this as a coordinated, statewide holiday security plan covering Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Costa Mujeres, Cozumel, and the main highway corridors that connect them.

A few key points:

• Personnel come from state and municipal police plus federal forces (National Guard, army, and navy).
• The focus is on tourist zones, commercial areas, beaches, bus stations, and highways, especially during the busy Christmas–New Year window.

The Surge: 400 New Officers for High Season

Seeing police in Cancun is nothing new. If you’ve visited recently, you’ve likely seen the National Guard patrolling the beaches with long guns—a sight that can be jarring for first-time visitors but is standard operating procedure in Mexico.

However, this new deployment is different.

These 400 new officers are joining the Municipal Police, specifically under the “Professional Career Service.” This distinction matters.

• The Breakdown: Of the new recruits, 220 are fully operational, meaning they are already on the streets, driving patrol cars, and walking the beat in high-traffic areas.
• The Strategy: This brings the total professional force to over 1,400 officers. Unlike the National Guard (who are federal and military-focused), these municipal officers are the ones you will actually interact with if you get lost, have a fender bender, or need help.

Earlier this year the state of Quintana Roo which is home to Cancun deployed over 7000 security personal in total to ensure that the tourist experience is safe.

This surge is part of a broader effort to ensure that the near record-breaking number of tourists expected this winter can enjoy their vacation without looking over their shoulder.

The administration confirmed the deployment of 725 body cameras alongside the new officers. This means nearly half the force is now equipped with technology that records their interactions in real-time.

Tulum’s airport may not have been a resounding hit like it was expected to be, but getting there is still easier than ever, no matter the mixed bag of results.

While still trendy and definitely overpriced in some aspects, Tulum’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sian Ka’an Biosphere, is remarkably uncrowded, with only a small entry fee required.

You can also book personalized or private tours (by request). No matter how you traverse this untamed natural wonder, expect to witness a variety of wildlife such as manatees, dolphins, and exotic birds.

Venture through mangrove canals, snorkel in natural pools, or float down ancient Maya waterways while others wonder if forking over their paycheck was worth being another face in the crowd at their ritzy resort.

We were wrong. In fact, we were completely surprised.

The AVA Resort Cancun is that rare unicorn in the world of hospitality: a mega-resort with the intimate soul and vibrant heartbeat of a boutique hotel. Its ability to deliver on both epic scale and personalized service is nothing short of remarkable, and it has immediately established itself as a top-tier contender in the luxury all-inclusive space.

The Heartbeat of the Resort: The Promenade ❤️

The true genius of the AVA and the secret to its unique vibe can be found on its main level. Everything—and we mean everything—is located on one magnificent, air-conditioned indoor promenade that stretches for over half a mile along the entire length of the resort.

This brilliant design choice solves the single biggest problem that plagues other giant resorts: navigation. Gone are the days of deciphering confusing maps, getting lost on winding outdoor paths, or waiting ten minutes for a golf cart just to get to dinner. At AVA, every restaurant, bar, shop, and activity entrance is right there on the promenade. It’s the central nervous system of the resort, making it unbelievably easy to get your bearings.

But it’s more than just convenient. This layout creates an incredible, dynamic energy. In the evening, the promenade comes alive. While the AVA is conveniently located just 10 minutes from the airport, it is not in the bustling Hotel Zone. The trade-off for this relative isolation? An absolutely staggering array of on-site activities that makes it almost impossible to get bored. You could genuinely spend a full week here and not experience everything the resort has to offer. The list is almost overwhelming:

• For the thrill-seeker: A full-scale laser tag arena, a state-of-the-art arcade with racing simulators, and even a multi-room escape room experience.
• For the family (or kids at heart): A sleek, modern bowling alley that feels more like a private lounge.
• For the evening: A stunning, professional-grade theater hosting nightly shows and entertainment.
• For practical needs: A collection of chic shops, a “tienda” for sundries and snacks, and a well-stocked pharmacy.

This is all before you even step outside.

Pools, a Lagoon, and Endless Loungers ☀️

The outdoor space at AVA is just as impressive as the interior. A series of absolutely giant pools stretches across the entire oceanfront length of the property, meaning you are never far from a place to cool off. And for anyone who has experienced the dreaded 6 AM “towel game” at other resorts, you can breathe a sigh of relief. There are literally thousands of comfortable lounge chairs available at all hours of the day. Finding a great spot is never a problem.

The true showstopper, however, is the expansive saltwater lagoon. This is a massive, crystal-clear body of water powered by sustainable technology that provides a perfect, protected environment for water sports. We spent an afternoon kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (all included, of course) in the calm, turquoise water. In the middle of the lagoon is a huge, inflatable obstacle course, and yes, the adults were having just as much fun on it as the kids. Ensuring younger members of the familia have their own slice of paradise, the resort boasts a sprawling kids’ waterpark with multiple slides designed for endless aquatic fun.

The “Familia” Feeling: Service, Dining & Rooms 🍽️

This is where the AVA truly defies its size. You will hear the staff use the word “familia” a lot, and it’s not just a marketing slogan; it’s a philosophy that clearly runs through the veins of the resort. From the bartenders to the servers to the concierge, every interaction feels personal, warm, and genuine.

The food and beverage program is a major highlight. With 17 restaurants and bars, the quality and variety are exceptional. The Black Iron steakhouse serves up incredible ribeyes, tenderloins, and New York strips that are all included in your stay. Service at Veranda, the beautiful Italian restaurant, was flawless and attentive—and trust us, we’re picky. The room service breakfast arrived hot, fresh, and exactly on time. And after dinner, a stop at the gelato shop for one of their endless flavors became a nightly ritual.

The rooms themselves are spectacular. Every single room at the AVA is oceanfront, so there are no bad views. The beds are huge and incredibly comfortable, the robes are luxuriously soft, and the amenities are top-of-the-line, right down to the in-room Nespresso machines. The minibar is, of course, fully stocked and replenished daily.

The One Caveat & The Final Verdict

So, is it perfect? In nearly every way, yes. But for the sake of a fully transparent review, we must mention the one area where the Cancun Hotel Zone has an edge: the beach. The sand at AVA is soft and the area is well-maintained, but due to its location, it can be heavily affected by seaweed during the sargassum season, and the water doesn’t have that almost impossibly electric blue color you find further up the coast.

However—and this is a big however—the resort’s incredible pools and the massive, perfectly swimmable lagoon more than make up for it. For a resort experience this complete, it’s a trade-off we would happily make again.

So, do we recommend it? Absolutely, and without hesitation. It is a true, luxurious 5-star all-inclusive experience that somehow manages to feel both epic and intimate at the same time. The AVA has its service down to a science, and we dare say it is a major new competitor for legacy mega-resorts like Moon Palace. And that’s a very exciting thing for Cancun.
