Between Europe’s new overly strict fingerprinting rules, and Thailand reducing visa-free stays’ length, it’s easy to feel as if the world isn’t exactly rolling out the red carpet to American citizens at the moment.

We won’t sugarcoat it, regardless of the side of the political spectrum you find yourself in, and we’re not here to judge. The U.S. passport has taken quite a hit lately.

We still haven’t got over the fact that China has opened visa-free access pretty much to the whole of Europe, Canada, and most of Latin America, but not the U.S. yet.

Thanks to the spate of new travel restrictions imposed on Americans, it’s been slowly slipping down the passport power ranking, which doesn’t sound too dramatic on paper, but in reality, means more paperwork, more bureaucracy, and less freedom to pack up and just wing it whenever you feel like going abroad.

Be that as it may, there’s one Asian country that’s now making it easier—well, somewhat cheaper—for Americans to visit.

Sri Lanka isn’t on the average American’s travel radar, but it offers stunning tropical nature, golden-sand beaches untouched by mass tourism, and epic train rides through mist-shrouded jungles—and now, you can visit without visa fees:

Sri Lanka Scraps Entry Fees For Americans

As of May 25, 2026, Sri Lanka has waived the tourist visa fee for travelers from roughly 40 countries, including the U.S. of A. Now, you still need to get that ETA prior to arriving, but the fee itself is now free if you’re an American citizen.

Why they don’t just get rid of the bloody thing completely, we don’t know, but there’s a long-established link between emerging economies and unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.

But hey, let’s not be ungrateful here. For families of 4 or 5 flying to Sri Lanka for their once-in-a-lifetime vacation, that’s about $200–$250 shaved off of their vacation funds on entry fees alone.

That’s pretty much your entire food spending for a fortnight in the country, and that’s if you’re dining out lavishly.

Now, there are a couple more things you should know about the new, revamped Sri Lankan ETA, other than it’s completely free of charge:

It’s valid for 30 days
It allows double entry (not multiple)
It still requires online approval before travel

Did You Have Any Idea Sri Lanka Could Be This Effortlessly Cool?

Sri Lanka has shot up the travel charts thanks to its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and jaw-dropping affordability.

It’s not exactly within easy reach for most Americans, with trips there involving at least one layover in another major Asian hub, if not multiple-day stopovers, jet lag, but it’s the kind of once-in-a-lifetime journey that pays off the minute you land somewhere like Colombo.

One of the most vibrant capital cities in the Orient, it takes pride in being culturally layered, architecturally eclectic, and fast-evolving. Quite honestly, not one corner of Colombo is like the other.

Whether it’s Pettah, where it’s Buddhist temples and native Sinhalese heritage that dominate the cultural scene, or the typically European colonial Fort district, with its arcaded avenues and elegant civic buildings that could belong somewhere in Lisbon—add to that a sea of skyscrapers—Colombo is the next Ho Chi Minh City, and you heard it here first.

Outside Colombo, it’s all about lush nature and slow living in peaceful coastal villages.

Take Kandy, for instance: as sweet as the name sounds, it’s a boho surfer’s paradise backed by laid-back youth hostels, and offering several miles of powdery golden sands.

Of course, it’s not a trip to Sri Lanka until you’ve snapped the iconic photo half-hanging from the side of the blue train as it bends around a sea of jungle, on your way from Kandy to Ella.

If it’s wildlife and adventure you seek, Yala National Park, the largest national park on the island, has that and then some. Think elephants, leopards, and dusty safari tracks cutting through untamed wilderness.

How Safe Is Sri Lanka?

Now, Sri Lanka is no South Korea or Japan, meaning it’s not in the ‘pickpocketing-is-unheard-of’, futuristic, hyper-efficient, high social cohesion side of Asia. It has real Emerging Country problems, and at times, it can feel a tad rough around the edges.

You might want to steer clear of certain areas of Colombo, like Pettah or Grandpass, unless you’re traveling with a knowledgeable local you trust, and for women particularly, traveling solo around the country can carry its challenges.

You wouldn’t know this if the only Sri Lanka you know is a 16-second, dreamy sunset-filtered Insta reel sequence you saved to your bookmarks folder, and that’s why we always recommend travelers check:

Not to be biased here as we’re the ones who developed it, but it is the single most accurate benchmark for gauging the safety situation on the ground, based on reports from actual travelers and government advisories.

It’s basically one of those ‘don’t mess around to find out’ kind of destinations where you don’t want to be caught walking haplessly in a deserted street at night, or leaving items unattended, like they might not be snatched in a split second.

This Is NOT The End Of The Sri Lankan Visa

Sri Lanka’s truly the new coolest kid on the block, but there was always some red tape keeping bureaucracy-wary travelers at bay.

For starters, it is not exactly a visa-free destination for most Westerners, and though the Government had been toying with easing visa rules for quite some time now, it never actually materialized.

You still needed to go online, fill out lengthy online forms, submit the documentation, wait for what felt like years—3-day deadlines that turn into a week, or in some worst-case scenarios several—and naturally, pay a $30 to $50 fee, depending on the visa requested, whether it was multiple entries, and length of stay.

Once again, Sri Lanka has not done away with the mandatory travel permit. It’s just made it a tad simpler and more straightforward to get. Plus, it’s free to apply now.

By the way, if you’re flying internationally this season, do make sure you run a little country check on the Entry Requirement Checker prior to heading to the airport.

You never know where stricter visa rules apply, and now more often than not, just grabbing your passport and dashing to the boarding gate oftentimes is not quite enough.

Step aside France, Italy, Spain: there’s a new cooler kid in the block, one that isn’t drowing in a wave of crime, or buckling under the weight of overtourism for once.

Tucked away in its well-protected, cozy Central-Eastern European nook, Hungary wrapped up last year hosting a record-breaking 20 million tourists.

As far as foreign visitors go, that’s a 12 percent jump over 2024, according to the Hungarian Conservative, and with demand still going strong, it’s looking like it’ll only get hotter in 2026.

Even if you’re not a seasoned traveler or a full-on Europhile, chances are you’ve heard of Budapest.

But if you’re wondering what else Hungary’s got up its sleeve, think summery lakes lined with resort towns, fairytale castles straight out of a storybook, and medieval villages that feel like time just… forgot about them.

One City To Rule Them All

Of course, there’s no Hungary without its beating heart, the cultural powerhouse, magnanimous former imperial seat that is Budapest.

A tale of two cities, Buda and Pest, that once sat on opposite sides of the Danube River prior to joining forces, it is simply one of the most beautiful European cities you could visit.

Honestly, if Paris had you staring slack-jawed at those Haussmann buildings, or London charmed you with its decaying Victorian-era polish, nothing can really prep you for a glorious BUD.

Think grand boulevards lined with palatial buildings you’d swear are museums, government offices, or luxury hotels, but are actually just residential apartment blocks dating back to the Habsburg days.

Add in a riverfront straight out of a dream, with soaring domes and spires reflecting off the fast-moving Danube, plus thermal spas tucked inside ornate 19th-century bathhouses, and yeah… It’s kind of on another level, if we’re honest.

How Safe Is Budapest On A Night Out?

Other than admiring the stunning architecture, you should swing by Szimpla Kert, the OG ‘ruin bar’ in town, basically a half-genius maze inside a crumbling building filled with mismatched furniture, loud neon art, bathtubs that double as sofas, and graffiti-splattered corners.

The best thing about Budapest is that, unlike some European capitals that have seen increases in crime in recent years, it remains generally safe and low-risk for travelers.

No getting followed home at night if you’re a woman by sketchy-looking individuals, nor constantly casting one of those “just in case” glances over your shoulder to make sure no hooded figures are lurking in the shadows.

The U.S. State Department currently lists it as a Level 1 destination, the safest classification a city can get.

Where The Real Magic Happens

Budapest is grand, but the real magic happens when you take that old rattling train out of the sprawling capital and into the virtually untouched Hungarian countryside.

If you have a soft spot for small villages that look like they’ve jumped out of the pages of a storybook, Szentendre has the cobblestone streets, pastel Baroque houses, and quaint riverside cafés dishing out fresh-out-the-oven pastries and artsy coffee.

Unlike your average Disneyfied European hotspot, it’s completely devoid of the usual selfie-taking hordes.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hollókő is that postcardy town that feels frozen in time. It has perfectly intact wooden medieval churches, whitewashed houses, and family-run taverns that keep folk traditions alive.

Over in Eger, in the heart of the namesake wine country, you’ll find a castle town filled with wine cellars, more Baroque monuments, and thermal baths with half the Budapest crowds.

If you’re here for some full-on medieval drama, the unassuming Visegrád may be tiny, but it’s packed with history: It houses the ruins of a medieval royal palace, and the hilltop citadel overlooks a sharp bend in the Danube. Hands down one of the best viewpoints in the entire country.

Hungary’s prettiest small town, you ask? Tihany is famous for its Benedictine Abbey perched on a hill overlooking Lake Balaton, the ‘Hungarian Sea‘, and endless fields of lavender in summer. Feels just like Provence, minus the hefty price tag.

Is Hungary Still Affordable In 2026?

Speaking of prices, Hungary is not the dirt-cheap destination mainstream publications will have you believe it is.

Then again, it’s not like we’re surprised, given the already-debunked ‘Hidden Gem Marseille‘ debacle, but definitely don’t believe everything you read on the internet, especially if it’s written by legacy media that’s maybe 3 to 5 years behind on travel trends.

That said, Hungary is affordable, although Budapest in particular is rapidly catching up with Western European capitals in terms of costs.

For instance, tickets for the iconic Széchenyi Thermal Bath in Budapest have doubled since 2020. The “basic” ticket now costs around $40, without extras. If you’re adding a private cabin, locker, additional towels, or weekend/peak-time upgrades, that can easily bump up to $55–$70+ per person.

Cocktails in ruin bars and touristy areas usually run about $6–$14 each, and a draught beer in a central pub is roughly $3–$5.

It’s still cheaper than most of Western Europe, but it’s definitely a step up from that old “super cheap Budapest” reputation that’s still floating around.

Hotels and Airbnb are where you actually see how BUD and cities like Paris or Rome don’t actually differ that much. A mid-range listing will set you back $130–$200/night in peak season, whereas budget hostels are still cheap-ish, but even those have gone up to $25–$60/night in good areas like Districts V or VII.

As for eating out, a simple local meal costs $8–$15. A restaurant dinner with drinks is $25–$30 per person.

Out in the country, smaller towns are generally cheaper, with meals often costing under $10, beer or wine ranging from $1.50 to $3, and accommodation starting from $30.

By the way, if you’re visiting Budapest in the coming months, why not pair it with a side trip to the criminally underrated, equally exciting Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia?

Americans Must Complete New Mandatory E-Form Traveling To This Asian Country

Bane of our lives. It seems that, with every passing month, travel rules just get more and more complicated, especially if you’re an American citizen.

From one of the top 3 most powerful passports in the world, to plunging to the 11th position, a U.S. travel document no longer grants you the level of hassle-free entry you might have enjoyed once.

Whether it’s asking for pre-authorization to board your flight to London or being subject to mandatory fingerprinting upon landing in Madrid, entry requirements are changing drastically.

One of the most sought-after destinations in Southeast Asia, known for its otherworldly nature, UNESCO-listed bays, and sprawling coastal cities, Vietnam is no exception:

Americans Now Need To Complete A Form To Travel To Vietnam

…On Top Of The E-Visa

As of April 15, arrival procedures in Vietnam have changed once again. Hopping on the wider Asia bandwagon, the Land of the Blue Dragon is introducing a new E-Form applying to all new arrivals. This includes U.S. citizens.

Dubbed the ‘Digital Arrival Card’, it must be presented by travelers upon arrival to the country, whether they’re visa exempt (Americans are not), or they can travel visa-free (as is the case with some Europeans).

The E-Form can be completed online, usually under 15 minutes.

Vietnam isn’t the only country slapping entry requirements on American travelers lately. To check your next destination, visit the Entry Requirement Checker here.

You can, in theory, fly to Vietnam without completing it, as this is different from the E-Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization. However, if you do so, you will still need to fill it out prior to undergoing border control, and this could cause severe delays.

Some airlines may also be stricter regarding the completion of the card before flying, and the last thing you want is to get denied boarding.

In practice, you’ll want to get your Digital Arrival Card within the 72 hours before you actually land in Vietnam.

If you’ve ever gone through the Vietnam E-Visa process, you already know it can drag on and feel like a bit of a slog, and the Vietnamese government’s official websites don’t always make things smooth or straightforward…. to put it mildly.

There are exceptions:

Vietnamese citizens traveling on a Vietnamese passport, of course
Travelers in transit who do not go through the usual entry formalities

Wondering how safe Vietnam is to visit right now? Many travelers mistakenly believe Vietnam is dangerous, as the Vietnam War, however long-resolved it may be, is still in the backs of their minds.

This is far from reflecting the situation on the ground today. Here’s what travelers have been reporting lately:

Those covered by the measure need to make sure they submit their info ahead of time, and that it’s accurate, legit, and complete. In other words, don’t half-ass the form while you’re doomscrolling TikTok on the side.

One wrong box ticked in the wrong place could land you in some unnecessary trouble at immigration, or at the very least, slow you down big time when you’re just trying to get through and start your trip.

This Tropical Central American Country Breaking All Time Tourism Records

I’m not sure it’s just me, but it feels like forever since this country’s name came up in here. Blame it on El Salvador’s current regional stardom, especially after Bukele completely crushed criminal gangs, or Belize’s newfound trendiness, but Costa Rica seemed to take a backseat for a while.

Not anymore.

Central America’s no-brainer, most iconic getaway is still as popular as ever. In fact, it saw a 10.4% rise in tourism this year compared to same period in 2025. Between January and February 2026, 653,959 international visitors landed in Costa Rica.

In Feb alone, 331,967 arrivals were registed. According to data from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, that’s a five-month streak of year-over-year growth.

Impressive numbers, but what is the fuss all about?

Small Country, A Plethora Of World Wonders

For a small nation-state roughly the size of West Virginia, Costa Rica packs quite the punch.

Over half of the national territory is blanketed by natural forest, with nature being central to the country’s international appeal. This is somewhere you go to unwind, slow down, enjoy a weekend away in a remote, BoHo chic jungle retreat, and soak up the tropical vibes.

It hosts roughly 5% of the world’s biodiversity, despite its small size, and between the rainforests, misty cloud forests spanned by scenic suspended bridges, and towering volcanos, you’re never exactly far from a mindblowing view here.

Oftentimes, all it takes is looking out the window.

This Is The Fastest-Growing Destination In Costa Rica

The most visited attraction in the country, Monteverde Cloud Forest is where a majority of visitors will be headed. A mystical, fog-enveloped maze of lush trails, it’s host to over 300 bird species and orchids, and it’s Costa Rica’s prime destinationf or canopy-shaded walks.

The numbers don’t lie: Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport in Liberia recorded 230,406 passengers so far this year, a 16.3% growth from a year earlier.

It’s the fastest-growing international airport in Costa Rica, and the closest major hub to Monteverde, at a 2.5 hour drive.

Although we’d still highly recommend you book a private driver, Costa Rica is relatively safe to drive in.

The country itself is probably the most advanced, infrastructure-wise, in Central America, though El Salvador is quickly catching up.

It boasts a dense road network (28,520 miles, to be precise), and near-full electricity coverage supporting tourism hubs. Paved networks link parks and beaches—none of the Honduras or Nicaragua-style dodgy dirt roads—and overall, it’s a lot safer to visit.

This Is How Safe Costa Rica Is

The U.S. State Department lists Costa Rica as a Level 2 destination, meaning Americans are not discouraged from visiting.

If they do, however, they must exercise certain precautions: avoiding commuting after dark, maintaining a higher level of situational awareness in crowded spaces, and checking credentials before booking guided activites from local operators.

The usual stuff.

This is still Latin America, though, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned from Mexico’s February crime flare-up, it’s that the security situation in the continent can deteriorate without warning. Before you fly out to Costa Rica, though, check any Travel Alerts that may be in place.

Where Are The Crowds Going?

Liberia Airport (LIR) is the main gateway to Guanacaste, a coastal stretch in the Costa Rican Pacific renowned fro tis golden sands, surfing scene, and luxury resorts.

Depending on where you go, your destination is a 25-90 minute drive.

Playas del Coco are a breezy half-hour taxi hop from the airport. These are the postcard-ready, volcanic, dark-sand beaches you see on Instagram.

A little further, some 45 mins, the Papagayo Peninsula is occupied by powerhouses like Four Seasons, on pristine coves largely untouched by mass tourism.

North America continues to lead Costa Rica’s tourism surge, with 454,889 Americans and Canadians touching down there so far this year (as of Feb).

If you’re wondering where the younger crowds are going, look no further than surf mecca Tamarindo, a 1-hour drive from Liberia Airport. It’s the trendy backpacker town on the coast, with a thriving youth hostel scene, a vibrant nightlife, and plenty of paradisiacal beaches with barrelling waves to choose from.

Peak ‘Pura Vida’ vibes, if you know what we mean.

Costa Rica’s #1 Destination

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is the busiest airport in the country right now, with 372,295 international visitors hosted in the first two months of 2026.

It serves not only the capital, San José—somewhere most tourists connect through on their way to the Costa Rican jungle—but the wider highland region.

Poás Volcano National Park is a 30 minute drive out of town, with its massive turquoise crater lake spewing sulfur fumes, and the iconic La Paz Waterfall (60 min) is a quintet of cascades surrounded by a verdant rainforest.

Keep your eyes peeled for the odd jaguar up in the trees.

Can’t get enough of Costa Rica’s natural wonders?

Irazú (1h away) is the highest volcano in the country, with moon-like craters and otherwordly views from the top.

A bumpy 2 hour journey from the capital, the dormant, cone-shaped Arenal Volcano is yet another must-see. The national park it’s enclosed within is dotted with hot springs and ancient lava flows, and there’s a plethora of unique jungle stays to pick from.

This Underrated & Safe Latin American Country Is Breaking All Time Tourism Records

When you think of El Salvador, the first images your brain conjures up are probably those of rioting gangs running amok, crime-ridden streets where the law of the strongest prevails, and, as is the case in Latin America, probably corrupt governments.

That used to be the case some five or six years ago, and then a literal miracle happened.

From a global pariah and one of the most violent countries in the world, with a shocking rate of murder per capita and urban violence, to the Switzerland of the Western Hemisphere, this tiny Central American state is now shattering another type of record.

Not to beat around the bush too much, tourists are finally flocking there in droves, and the newfound state of well-being is only part of the reason why:

El Salvador Is Living Its Golden Age Right Now

As reported by Costatur, El Salvador has already hosted over 815,000 guests so far this year, with a goal of hitting 4.2 million by December 2026.

That’s a bold strategy, especially considering that, back in 2019, prior to the current administration taking charge, it hosted roughly 1.3 million tourists annually, a large number of whom were returning El Salvadorians or business travelers.

Now, it seems the tides are turning.

El Salvador has Nayib Bukele, its controversial, hardline yet tough-on-crime President, to thank. Say what you will, he did put the house in order.

He incarcerated around 1% of the population in a major crackdown on violent crime, launched a ‘Territorial Control Plan’ to seize control of gang-dominated areas, and invested heavily in infrastructure projects.

We’re talking roads, bridges, public works, a whole makeover of the country’s largest airport, El Salvador International Airport (SAL), a renovation of the capital’s once-derelict Historic Center, and a clear, resounding message sent out to foreigners saying:

El Salvador is safe. Come visit.

Not just empty words, either: in 2019, the country had a jaw-dropping rate of 38 homicides per 100,000. In 2025, that staggering figure had dropped to just about 1.3.

For comparison purposes, Switzerland, one of Europe’s poster children for safety standards and well-being, has a homicide rate of 0.6. El Salvador is quickly bridging the gap.

On the ground, this means no more armed assaults, or at least a drastic reduction in those, home burglaries, and turf wars.

The Europenization Of San Salvador

On top of that, the Bukele administration is literally converting San Salvador, the national capital, in a city break actually worth spending money on.

No more of the hanging wires between buildings, piling trash, nor dodgy, low-cap Josés looking at you funny for being an obvious gringo: San Salvador’s once-glorious colonial core is being revitalized, with the addition of pedestrian-friendly zones, lamp-lit paved streets, and major infrastructure upgrades.

You’ve probably seen Before/After videos of it doing the rounds on X. The easiest way to explain it is this may be the first case of First Worldization ever seen in Latin America.

Perhaps not the most politically correct statement to make, but not one bit less truthful.

Millions of tourists are now headed for San Salvador to witness firsthand its rebirth, from the grandiose Metropolitan Cathedral, a Neo-Gothic marvel towering above the downtown’s mid-rises, to the restored National Palace and the leafy, sun-drenched Plaza Libertad.

A Magnificent Nature Practically Unspoiled

Much like Costa Rica at one point, El Salvador also has a lot of potential, nature-wise, that is yet to be unleashed.

All along its Pacific coast, you’ll find beautiful golden-sand or even black volcanic beaches, backed by lively surfer towns which are trending with European backpackers as of late.

As far as major coastal hubs go, La Libertad is probably the place to go at the moment: it boasts some of the best surf breaks in Central America, including Punta Roca, known for its long, barrelling waves, El Tunco, one of the prettiest beaches in the entire country, and a relaxed, fishing town vibe.

For the hiking enthusiasts, Santa Ana Volcano, or as it is known in the local indigenous language, Ilamatepec, offers breathtaking crater views, and a glassy, mirror-like laguna sitting right in the middle.

Though lesser-explored, Izalco Volcano is not to be missed: called the Lighthouse of the Pacific, due to its constant, fiery lava shows, visible to ships far out at sea, it’s surrounded by lush jungle and historic coffee plantations.

For a more convenient and easier-to-reach spot, just outside San Salvador, El Boquerón is yet another volcano with equally spectacular crater panoramas.

Looking for some of those cloud forests, with winding trails, views of multiple lava-spewers, and harboring a rich wildlife? Cerro Verde National Park is a short 45–60 minute drive from the city, out in the western highlands, and it looks like a mini Costa Rica, except less developed, and more off-path.

Just how we like it.

Oh, and don’t forget Santa Ana, a picturesque town near the park, often described as El Salvador’s most beautiful. It is dominated by a Gothic cathedral, one of the largest in Central America, and its colonial downtown, dotted with colorful plazas, centuries-old buildings, and cobbled streets, is an absolute delight to wander.

Americans can fly nonstop to El Salvador from 4 major Stateside hubs:

This Little-Known Country Aims To Become Major Hub For The Caribbean

In this day and age of information overload, it’s a tall task to find true off-path destinations.

When it comes to the Caribbean and South America, there are only so many left to unveil, but one better known for its dreamscape rainforests over its coastline isn’t trying to become the next big beach escape per se — they’re trying to become the new gateway.

When you have few attractions besides otherworldly nature and tasty rum factories, they tend to make for short trips anyway.

From that perspective, it seems to be a great idea on paper. Whether they pull it off remains to be seen.

This country has been on my person radar for years because it’s so undiscovered, authentic, and surprisingly affordable to reach.

The issue is living on the West Coast hampers my ability to reach the Caribbean with crazy flight schedules, but I’ve almost pulled the trigger a few times since American Airlines flights have been as low as the $400s round-trip — a steal of a deal!

I’m not alone, either.

In fact, we covered this cultural gem last fall as one of the Caribbean’s up-and-coming destinations, and it appears there are no signs of slowing down with the lofty goal to become a major hub for the region.

Guyana Swings For The Fences To Boost Tourism

That’s right — little-known Guyana is targeting its next claim to fame as a flight hub to Caribbean vacationers.

With a population of under 1 million people for the entire country, most are jam-packed into the colonial capital, Georgetown.

The rest of the country is largely dense forestry where wildlife roam free and undisturbed.

Guyana may be on the up and up lately, but it’s not exactly a household name — but they’re trying a unique strategy to become more popular and just might work.

Embracing a hub role isn’t exactly unheard-of; I’ve personally taken advantage of it with at least 2 other countries that come to mind:

Panama (via Copa Airlines)
Iceland (via Icelandair)

We’ve also reported about others in the past, such as Emirates, but I don’t have enough commas in my bank account for a ticket…

Circling back to what I said about $400 round-trip airfare, for someone looking to fly from California to a virtually unknown destination in South America and the Caribbean, that’s like spotting Sasquatch.

But it does exist, so they’re already a step ahead.

Additionally, Ramesh Ghir, CEO of Georgetown’s Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO), was quoted by our sources as saying “We have seen a phenomenal growth … from 4 airlines in 2020 to 16 airlines and 17 new destinations”.

Guyana Does Not Have Its Own Flagship Airline

Unlike its other “hidden gem” neighbor, Suriname, Guyana does not have its own airline.

Guyana Is Improving Airport Infrastructure

While it hasn’t been explicitly forecasted how Guyana is determined to be a hub, here are 5 things we know for sure:

Construction of a new 156,000 square foot arrivals terminal
New terminal will include upscale lounges and trendy retail shops
New routes are being coordinated behind closed doors
It’s expected to directly connect major Middle East Asia, South America and Caribbean destinations
Officials say the new terminal is on track to open within 18 months

That said, despite being more known as a South American nation, Guyana is undeniably Caribbean.

In fact, GEO currently serves more Caribbean hotspots than it does South American countries —including Barbados, Dominican Republic, and Antigua, to name a few.

As Americans already have multiple options to fly here nonstop, GEO is only expected to grow and serve even more Caribbean paradises in the next year and a half.

Is Guyana Worth A Visit?

As we said earlier, more travelers have been scoping out Guyana as their new adventure of choice — and what an adventure it is.

Without its own airline, a stopover here may not look like that of Copa or Emirates.

But we at Travel Off Path have done some hefty research. We recommend spending 2 to 3 days here to cover the bases, unless you’re a true adventurer willing to go deep — and we mean deep — into practically untouched jungles.

If there’s one can’t-miss, bucket-list attraction, it’s Kaieteur Falls, which is 5 times taller than Niagara Falls.

Just know it costs a pretty penny, but well worth the trek if you can swing the price…

Other than that, if you want to feel truly local and immersed in nature, a stay in eco-lodge/fruit winery Pandama Retreat may be a far cry from the Caribbean all-inclusive you may be heading to, but an unforgettable memory nonetheless.

There are mixed reviews from travelers about Georgetown. But there are bustling markets and authentic Mom ‘n Pop eateries to check out.

The main concern is safety. Currently, the State Department classifies Guyana as Level 3: Reconsider Travel, so there may be some work to do to earn travelers trust.

Real-time data suggests now isn’t a great time to visit as travelers have scored Guyana with 50/100 — not exactly a selling point.

This Undiscovered Eurasian Country Offers Digital Nomad Visas With No Income Requirement

I, as well as others on our expert team here at Travel Off Path, have had the distinct pleasure of visiting Istanbul, which means we’ve stood on the edge of Europe and Asia.

Not to boil any geographer’s blood, but there’s a swath of countries, such as Georgia, that feel more European than Asian despite being classified as Asian.

Maybe I’ve explored one too many Chinatowns in my travels, but cheap street noodles and foo dog statues don’t even remotely encapsulate Asia’s vast continent.

Whether you want to call the following undiscovered Europe or Asia, you’re not wrong.

Tomato, tomahto.

But if there’s one thing you should absolutely know about it its that it’s very affordable for long-term travelers, especially digital nomads who have up-and-down paychecks.

That’s right — little-known Armenia is one of the best-kept secrets in the nomad world, and we’re here to crack it open as April to October is the sunniest stretch of the year.

Armenia Welcomes All

Winter is all but wrapped up, including for Armenia, whose sprawling capital city of Yerevan saw a high of 56 degrees as of this writing.

Over the next month or so, the weather will become a lot more enjoyable throughout this off-path nation that’s easier to reach than you might suspect.

More importantly, if making an extraordinary move beyond the usual nomad hotspots really piques your interest, they make it super easy to apply with 3 minimal requirements:

Proof of a valid passport
Have a remote job as a freelancer or business owner
Be willing to register a business in Armenia ($7.60 fee)

That’s it — no bank statements or tax returns needed. But you will need to submit additional photos and a medical certificate.

Once you pay an application fee ranging from $264 – $353 and apply for a resident permit, you’re golden.

Long-term stays are allowed for up to 1 – 5 years. To be exact, renewable temporary residence permits are valid for one year and permanent residence permits are valid for 5 years (and also renewable).

While not technically a ‘digital nomad visa’ per se, self-employed remote workers can bypass any bureaucratic headaches by simply applying for a tax ID, which buttons up the last hurdle to formalize your new your new home base.

Cafes Galore In The “Pink City”

Not to pivot to an unwanted history lesson, but the reason Armenia largely remains undiscovered from a tourist perspective is its dark past, including a horrific genocide shoved in the back of history books that has long overshadowed the country’s majestic beauty as a must-visit destination.

The point being, Armenia, as it stands today, feels relatively new with vibrant arts and a growing tech scene, making it a surprisingly seamless fit for many digital nomads.

Chances are your gateway into the country will be Yerevan, which serves as a great base to get your bearings before venturing out for even lesser-known stunners on your free weekends, such as Old Town Gyumri.

Known as the “Pink City” for its dusty-rose cityscape, it’s brimming with cafes that couldn’t be better for your daily office to fake-smile and nod your way through Zoom meetings, all while sipping “soorj”, Armenia’s traditional coffee that locals rave about.

Given the ongoing Middle East conflict with no official end date in sight, visiting any country attached to Iran might seem jarring, but the majority of Armenia’s worthwhile destinations lies what feels like worlds away from the border, which is only 27 miles in length.

That said, the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan issued an alert on February 28, 2026 as part of a broader alert for the Middle East, essentially asking Americans to keep aware of their surroundings, avoid large gatherings, and know flights are at higher risk than usual for delays and cancellations.

Additionally, the State Department has not updated their advisory for Armenia since last summer, which speaks for itself travelers are no more at risk than before you know what hit the fan.

5 Bucket List Destinations To Visit In Europe’s Trendiest Mediterranean Country

A small Balkan nation slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Connecticut, with a coastline running along the turquoise Mediterranean for 183 miles, Montenegro is one of the trendiest places to be in Europe right now.

Though it’s home to only 620,000 residents, it is rapidly rising in popularity as a summer destination, challenging well-established regional hubs like Croatia and Greece.

In recent years, it’s attracted an average of 2.5 million visitors a year, an impressive figure considering both the size of the country—it’s Europe’s 8th-smallest nation—and the fact it’s mostly serviced by two small airports that are effectively in operation during the summer months.

From a supposed backwater of Europe to a highly sought-after Adriatic bolthole, Montenegro is undergoing a Tourism Renaissance like no other, but as a visitor who doesn’t know an awful lot about the country and isn’t quite sure where to go, what do you even plug into Google Maps?

Here are 5 bucket list spots to check out in Montenegro this spring and summer that you’ll still be bragging about months later:

Kotor

Montenegro’s most iconic seaside destination, Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage town located in the innermost reaches of a winding bay, backed by cliffs on both sides, and fed directly by the crystalline waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Heavily fortified by walls, drawbridges, watchtowers and the like, and criss-crossed by cobbled lanes that look like they’ve been plucked straight out of a medieval-themed fantasy RPG, it’s one of Europe’s most picturesque ancient towns.

Some even go as far as calling it the “mini Dubrovnik”, and the similarities are indeed there: the signature Dalmatian ochre-coloured buildings with Italianate green shutters, picture-perfect fountain squares dominated by Romanesque churches, and narrow alleys, but in our book, Kotor is even prettier.

Oh, and considerably less crowded, if we may add.

For the best views over Kotor’s stone-made townscape and the Bay of Kotor, climb up to St. John’s Fortress, an ancient stronghold perched on a hill overlooking the whole bay.

Perast

A short drive from Kotor itself, still in the same bay, Perast is that quaint fishing village revolving around a medieval belfry. It’s tiny, but it punches way above its weight, and it’s definitely not somewhere you want to skip when traveling around Montenegro.

Kotor may look offbeat and quiet compared to Dubrovnik, over in Croatia, but it still gets ridiculously busy during cruising season. In Perast, there’s no cruise ship swarm: just one main waterfront road, stone townhouses, and a handful of chill seafood eateries.

For a town this small, with a population of only 250 people, it has quite the collection of Venetian structures: over 16 Baroque palaces, to be more precise, and between the sun-bleached stone façades and the glistening water, it’s almost like a miniature version of Venice… minus the chaos.

The absolute must-see here, however, is Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island home to a solitary Baroque church with a lavish interior. The boat taxi takes only 5 minutes, and costs around $10 roundtrip per person.

Cetinje

We’re leaving the coast for now and driving further inland towards Cetinje, Montenegro’s prettiest mountain village and its former royal capital.

Now, Podgorica holds the title of the country’s administrative centre and most important city, but unless you have a penchant for Brutalist architecture, snarled traffic, and graffiti-covered concrete blocks, you might find the Montenegrin capital a tad… uninspiring.

Cetinje, on the other hand, has a largely pedestrianised centre, with lamp-lit streets lined with colourful historic houses, grand palaces, and museums.

In the background, dark-green mountains that quite literally give the country its own name: Monte Negro. Black Mountain, and if you’re staying for the long weekend, you’ll be spoiled for choice as far as hiking trails go.

Must-sees include Cetinje Monastery, an Orthodox monastery housing old icons and Montenegrin relics, Ćipur, or Court Church, where members of the Petrović dynasty, which used to rule the country, are interred, and the Blue Palace, the former presidential residence.

Budva

Gorgeous as the mountain-traversed hinterland may be, Montenegro’s Mediterranean charm lies in its Adriatic Coast, shaped by over two thousand years of Greek colonization, Roman rule, Venetian trade, and later on, Yugoslav socialism.

Everyone’s flocking to Kotor, it seems, and we don’t blame them, but if there’s one town that captures the spirit of Montenegro and doesn’t feel overrun with tourists, that’s the unassuming Budva, a walled harbor town directly hugged by the Adriatic.

Occupying a historic peninsula, lapped by the gentle waves on both sides, it is essentially made up of cobble-paved lanes, Romanesque church towers, plazas bordered by no-frills cafés, and a Venetian citadel. The most fascinating part?

It’s still mostly locals living in those heritage rock-hewn homes, enjoying the sun on Mogren Beach—a pebbly stretch with cracking views of the fortified ensemble—and knocking back sundowners at the old port. In sum, Budva feels like the real deal: less showpiece, more living history.

Durmitor

From coast to mountains to coast, back to mountains again. Is there a better way to describe Montenegro than this constant rollercoaster of a scenery?

I love me a good laid-back Adriatic vacay on the Montenegrin Riviera, but there’s no denying the real pulse of the Balkan country beats in Durmitor, a vast national park where jagged peaks, pine forests, and glacial lakes stretch as far as the eye can see.

Like Switzerland… except without the eye-watering prices or the tour-bus gridlock.

One of the most stunning emerald lakes in Europe, Crno Lake has walking trails tracing its entire shoreline, climbing into dramatic ridges and skirting quiet villages dotted with alpine-style wooden chalets that feel untouched by time.

Over on the Tara River Canyon, adventurous rafters tackle thrilling rapids, and for the sunrise chasers, Bobotov Kuk, the highest peak in the range, delivers a rugged, Dolomites-esque panorama you won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

Durmitor is all about slow nights in rustic lodges scattered across alpine meadows, crisp mountain air, stars spilling across the sky, and wilderness that feels genuinely wild. You know, real Montenegro at its rawest and most untamed.

I’ve Visited Every European Country: Here Are The 5 Cities I Felt Safest

If you’ve been following my country-hopping adventures here on Travel Off Path for the past five years, you know by now there aren’t that many places left to check off on my Europe bucket list.

Being based in Paris, and getting those $15 Ryanair long-weekender flights every chance I get, I’ve managed to visit every major European country (yep, even Ukraine in times of war), some twice, and over 100 cities.

In reality, it’s a way-higher number than that, but who’s counting at this point?

This Is The Europe I Love

Undeniably gorgeous as Europe may be, if there’s one thing I’ve noticed over the years, it’s how safety has taken a significant turn for the worse in the short timespan of half a decade.

I needn’t even go far to notice: a simple stroll around North Paris will now put me in the same hyper-vigilant state as I usually am in, say, South America or Africa.

No hate, just facts. What we call ‘Western’ Europe is no longer the high-trust society it once was, and that’s a feeling shared by many across the political spectrum.

Still, there are well-preserved pockets of the Europe we once knew and loved. You just won’t find it in London, Barcelona, Rome, or even Stockholm, formerly a rather peaceful capital, now one of the continent’s top crime hotspots.

Without beating around the bush too much, here are 5 European cities where I feel absolutely safe in:

Budapest, Hungary

A former imperial city, Budapest has retained much of its past glory, and I’m not talking only about the stately fin de siècle buildings, the red-domed Parliament on the shores of the Danube, and the squeaky-clean streets:

Other than being an absolute stunner, and possibly one of the most beautiful European capitals you’ll ever set foot in, it’s incredibly low-risk for travelers.

Coming from Paris, I’m always a bit wary of letting my guard down, especially in touristy spots, but it will only take you a quick glance around a predominantly, proudly-Hungarian Budapest to notice our self-imposed restraints do not apply here:

People walk using their phones completely oblivious to potential snatchers, train stations do not look like the gateway to the seventh Dantean hell, and women walk home alone late at night without hiding a key between their knuckles.

The U.S. Department of State concurs: Budapest (and Hungary as a whole) is a very safe destination, listed as Level 1: Americans do not have to worry with elevated crime, terrorist plots (there aren’t any), and mugging when visiting.

That said, there might be the odd catcaller or rowdy drunken fellow in the tramway, and I’d maybe consider steering clear of the outer suburbs of District VIII at night—it’s Budapest’s gypsy ghetto and drug problems and rough sleeping are rampant—but overall, you can rest assured violence is a non-issue.

Warsaw, Poland

Yet another Central European capital that’s found itself in my good graces lately is Warsaw, Poland.

I’ve been to numerous large cities in Poland at this point, and I could truly vouch for any of them, but given Warsaw’s size and its global attractiveness, it’s a particularly rare feat that it’s maintained the seemingly-unavoisable urban issues so tightly controlled.

Though it has a metropolitan area of over 3.2 million residents, Warsaw has a very low crime rate of 19.60—if we were to compare, London’s is a devastating 64.93, and my Paris nest an equally shameful 62.35.

Poland has taken some heat in the European Parliament for being tough on its border control, and showing no clemency as far as terrorism threats go, but it seems to have paid off:

Similarly to Buda, you won’t spot locals feeling for their wallets every 10 seconds in the metro, nor women deliberately avoiding certain neighborhoods out of fear of being attacked by baleful men. Poland almost seems to exist in a different universe altogether than that of the wider European Union.

As for me, I quite enjoy wandering around Warsaw’s medieval-esque Old Town, with a café-lined Market Square and a red-brick Barbican, without casting looks over my shoulder, or scanning the (majority-Polish) crowds for my usually-perceivedthreats.

Vilnius, Lithuania

It seems the further East you go, the safer you feel these days. Welcome to Vilnius, the compact, quaint capital of a tiny nation called Lithuania, straddling the Baltic Sea, and a storybook destination without the usual roadside bandits and dragons to slay.

In our Traveler Safety Index, Lithuania is one of the highest-ranking European spots out there, with a ‘stable’ badge and a current score of 85, based on live signals from real people who’ve visited recently.

Your biggest nuisance here is the odd, insistent Romani beggar—they’re usually chased away by police, though.</p> <p><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><strong>I wouldn’t exactly leave my belongings unattended</strong> in any case, especially at the main bus station or on a restaurant terrace, but realistically, even in those situations, you’re highly unlikely to have your items snatched.</span></p> <p>If you’ve been missing ‘Old Europe’, of the kind that’s not completely succumbed to the spoils of mass tourism, petty theft, and where there’s not a kebab stand every 10 meters, you’ll definitely love it here.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Reykjavík</strong>, Iceland</h3> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/sunrise-over-reykjavik-in-iceland-with-the-hallgrimskirkja-church-in-view.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Mothers literally leave their toddlers sleeping in a trolley in the car park while they head to the market to do groceries. You just assume there’s a flight.</p> <p>That, and the fact that <a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/ive-visited-over-50-us-cities-here-are-the-5-ill-never-go-back-to/" type="link" id="https://www.traveloffpath.com/ive-visited-over-50-us-cities-here-are-the-5-ill-never-go-back-to/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oakland</a> and San Jose are nearby too…</p> <p>But this time, SFO gets all the glory (not that there’s ever a time Oakland wins a PR battle).</p> <p>This week, popular Latin American airline Avianca announced it will soon have a monopoly on <strong>The Bay’s only nonstop route to Guatemala</strong>.</p> <p>According to <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/news/avianca-new-route-san-francisco-central-america/" type="link" id="https://thepointsguy.com/news/avianca-new-route-san-francisco-central-america/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Points Guy,</a> this game-changing route is set to serve San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) on a regular basis throughout the summer.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Panoramic-View-Of-A-Volcano-And-Lake-Region-In-Guatemala-Central-America.jpg"></a></figure> <p>In other words, it will initially be <strong>seasonal</strong> to test the waters.</p> <p>Just in time to burn through your well-deserved PTO, you can cash it in from <strong>June 1 through August 31</strong>.</p> <p>From SFO, the flight is slated to depart at 7:45 a.m. and arrive at 2:15 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.</p> <p>Conversely, from GUA, the flight is scheduled for departure at 1:20 a.m. and arrives at 6:25 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.</p> <p>There is one caveat, however.</p> <p>Avianca also serves San Salvador, El Salvador (SAL). Their SFO-SAL route will no longer be a nonstop flight.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Mountain-view-from-historic-plaza-in-Antigua-Guatamala.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Essentially, the new SFO-GUA route now serves as a pit stop. The same plane will continue onward, affecting travelers to El Salvador more than those heading to Guatemala.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What To Expect Aboard Avianca</strong></h3> <p>If you’re unaware, Avianca is a Bogotá, Colombia-based airline and is held in high regard as a Star Alliance member, and is certified as a 3-star airline by SkyTrax.</p> <p>While passenger reviews could be better, Avianca does hold an impressive track record in terms of safety, holding a near-perfect 6/7 rating, according to <a href="https://www.airlineratings.com/airlines/avianca" type="link" id="https://www.airlineratings.com/airlines/avianca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AirlineRatings</a>.</p> <p>On board, travelers can expect the following amenities:</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Avianca-plane-on-runway-at-sundown.jpg"></a></figure> <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and snacks</li> <li>On-board meals and alcoholic drinks for purchase</li> <li>USB power ports</li> <li>Streaming entertainment to personal devices</li> </ul> <p>Wifi is a big maybe.
