1. Timor-Leste

The Untouched Marine Sanctuary

Tucked away at the remote southeastern edge of the Indonesian archipelago, Timor-Leste is the newest sovereign state in Asia. Because the tourist infrastructure here is still super basic, it organically filters out the massive crowds. You are left with a raw, stunning paradise that feels like a well-kept secret.

The Atmosphere: Pure, untouched coastal beauty. Timor-Leste sits right in the Coral Triangle, meaning its marine biodiversity is staggering. The waters around Atauro Island actually hold the record for the highest biodiversity of reef fish globally.

My Strategy: You have to get in the water. If you visit between October and December, you can witness the massive migration of whales and dolphins right off the coast. Back on land, try the Ikan Sabuko (tamarind-marinated grilled fish) and finish every meal with their world-famous Timorese coffee. Just make sure you book your trip during the dry season (June to November) to avoid the heavy monsoon rains!

2. Kyrgyzstan

The Nomadic Heart of Central Asia

If you want to completely disconnect from the grid, this is the place. Kyrgyzstan has actively resurrected the ancient traditions of the Silk Road, offering an unparalleled community-centric travel experience set against the breathtaking, snow-capped Tien Shan mountains.

The Atmosphere: Wild, expansive, and deeply connected to nature. You get to engage with a fully intact, thriving nomadic civilization. Instead of hotels, you stay in traditional felt yurts at high-altitude summer pastures (jailoos) like Lake Song Kul.

My Strategy: Embrace the equestrian culture! If you can, catch a game of Kok-Boru—a highly aggressive, incredibly fast-paced form of horseback polo. For the best weather and access to the high-altitude yurt camps, you need to visit during the summer window from June to September. Plus, it is completely visa-free for US and EU citizens, which makes getting there a breeze.

3. Albania

The Enigmatic Balkan Pearl

For decades, Albania was completely sealed off from the rest of the world. Now, it has burst onto the scene as a highly coveted, deeply fascinating European destination that gives you everything from the towering Dinaric Alps to the turquoise, sun-drenched coastlines of the Ionian Sea.

The Atmosphere: Warm, chaotic in the best way, and incredibly welcoming. To understand Albania, you have to understand Besa—an ancient, unbreakable cultural code of hospitality. Locals will go out of their way to make sure you are safe and happy, often spontaneously inviting you in for strong espresso and raki (a potent fruit brandy).

My Strategy: The capital, Tirana, is a wild, colorful mix of architecture, but you absolutely have to leave the city to explore the UNESCO World Heritage town of Gjirokastër and the stunning beaches of the Albanian Riviera. Visit during the shoulder seasons (April to June, or September to October) to get perfect Mediterranean weather without the suffocating summer crowds.

4. Benin

The Spiritual & Historical Crucible

Nestled along the Bight of Benin in West Africa, this is a destination that demands deep intellectual and emotional engagement. It requires you to confront the profound history of the transatlantic slave trade while navigating spectacular ecological reserves and jaw-dropping indigenous architecture.

The Atmosphere: Deeply spiritual, complex, and vibrant. Benin is the spiritual epicenter of Vodoun (Voodoo), which is an officially recognized state religion here tied deeply to the natural world. I am continuously blown away by Ganvié—a massive, fully functioning stilt village suspended entirely above Lake Nokoué, accessible only by wooden canoes.

My Strategy: You cannot visit Benin without paying your respects at the “Door of No Return” in Ouidah, a towering memorial arch standing on the beach. For logistics, secure your e-Visa and a mandatory Yellow Fever vaccination well before you arrive (check entry requirements here). The absolute best time to go is during the dry season (November to February), which perfectly aligns with the massive national Vodoun Festival on January 10th.

5. Georgia

The Ultimate Cultural Crossroads

Straddling the exact geographical divide between Eastern Europe and Western Asia, Georgia has survived millennia of empires and invasions to maintain a fiercely independent, highly distinct cultural identity in the stunning Caucasus Mountains.

The Atmosphere: Hearty, celebratory, and aggressively hospitable. The undisputed centerpiece of Georgian society is the Supra—a highly ritualized, hours-long traditional feast governed by a toastmaster. The food is spectacular, comforting, and heavily carbohydrate-focused.

My Strategy: Come hungry and ready to drink wine. You have to eat Khachapuri (a boat-shaped bread filled with molten cheese, butter, and a raw egg mixed tableside) and massive Khinkali soup dumplings. Georgia also has a scientifically verified 8,000-year history of winemaking, so visiting the Kakheti region is mandatory. Go between May and October so you can actually access the remote mountain passes, and take full advantage of their unprecedented one-year visa-free entry!

Gdańsk

Straddling the Baltic Sea, on one of the most beautiful, yet lesser-visited regions in Europe—hello Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn—Gdańsk is a fourth regional capital of the sorts. It currently exists under Poland, but it was once German, at one point, even a powerful city state in its own right.

Though severely damaged in World War II, it saw a complete makeover in recent times, with much of the beautiful medieval center being restored to its former glory.

We’re talking those beautiful skinny townhouses, three to four storeys tops, covered in colorful German motifs, winding streets lined with decorated front porches that spill onto the cobblestones, and a monumental red-brick church, St. Mary’s, towering above gabled roofs.

Truly, the townscape here looks like the closest thing you can get to a storybook scene in real life.

To the culture buffs out there, don’t miss the Żuraw, Europe’s best-preserved medieval crane, perched on the banks of Motława River. WWII enthusiast? Westerplatte, on the outskirts of town, just happens to be the place where it all started, where Germans first invaded and kickstarted the war.

Craving that lively milk bar vibe, with delicious pierogi and malt-rich draught beer? Check out the canteen-style Bar Turystyczny. Yep, it’s literally called Tourist Bar, but it’s the best kind of tourist trap you’ll ever walk into, and psst… want to know a secret? Even locals secretly love it.

Poland Entry Rules Are Changing

Poland is changing its Entry Requirements this year in line with the European Union’s new directives. Soon enough, Americans will need to get fingerprinted and registed digitally upon arriving to Poland.

Later in the year, a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization (ETIAS) will be enforced, meaning you can no longer travel to Poland, or the wider EU, completely visa-free.

Toruń

I’m not sure about you, but given his Latin-sounding name, I once believed Nicolaus Copernicus would have been born somewhere in Italy. I was way off-mark on this one.

He actually hails from Toruń, a quaint Polish city overlooking the fast-flowing Vistula, boasting one of Poland’s best-preserved medieval architecture ensembles. The real deal, not another post-WWII reconstruction.

Unlike most Polish cities that were completely ravaged by war, Toruń was left pretty much untouched, and that’s what makes it special (and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I guess).

Everything you see, from the Hanseatic-style brick walls surrounding the city, to its timeless stone-paved thoroughfares, to the (rather-large) Main Square, host to a Gothic Town Hall.

Remember Copernicus? You can even visit his aged-brick, step-roofed medieval house over at Kopernika St. 15/17. Whether you’re here simply to admire the practically-intact 15th-century abode, or geek out with the whole ‘Earth goes around the Sun’ thing, it’s that one spot you absolutely cannot miss.

By the way, did you know Poland’s most famous gingerbread is from here? Not just another bland souvenir package for wide-eyed Americans, Toruń’s pierniki is baked using the same recipe from the 16th-century, and if you find the original spiced loaf bland, there’s a whole myriad of modern flavors to try.

Just hit up any street-corner bakery in the Old Town.

Poznań

We like to call this the mini Kraków, with maybe about less than a third of the latter’s maddening crowds.

Poznań boasts what’s probably the prettiest square in the entire country, so big it has room for a number of medieval monuments you’ve probably never heard of it. For starters, there’s the soaring Renaissance Town Hall, with its mechanical clock and castle-like demure.

Every day at noon sharp, two animated goat figures throttle out of the main tower, butt their heads twelve times, and retreat to mark the hour.

They’re Poznań’s most-recognized symbol, and an ode to the city’s clockmaking tradition.

Right beside it, the Cloth Hall is a row of aesthetic wall-to-wall buildings painted in bright pastel colors, sitting above arcades with charming café terraces tucked behind them.

Only a few steps from the stunning square, the Fara Church is a pink-stone Baroque masterpiece with a lavish interior. Gilded altars, heavenly frescoes, and impressive stuccowork… and no, it’s not the cathedral.

Poznań’s 1,000-year-old Bishop’s seat sits on Cathedral Island, a leisurely 20-minute walk along a scenic riverfront. A bit out of the way, sure, but its twinning Gothic towers, imposing main portal, and haunting interior are definitely worth a visit.

By the way, if you’re wondering how safe is Poland these days, considering the ongoing war in Eastern Europe, and the volatile state of geopolitics, you’ll be glad to know travelers on the ground report very few, if any crime-related incidents:

Szczecin

Just in case you’re wondering how that should even sit on your lips, it’s something like Sh-tsh-eh-cheen.

Yet another lovechild of Germany and Poland, Szczecin is cut through by the Oder River, which empties straight into the Baltic Sea. Much like Gdańsk, except even more offbeat.

Once a Prussian (a.k.a. German) maritime hub before it fell into Polish hands, it’s markedly different from your average Polish city, with wider boulevards, a radial street plan reminiscent of Paris or Milan, and an imposing castle dominating the skyline.

That’s the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle, a whitewashed beauty overlooking the maze-like Old Town and its riverfront.

Wawel Castle in Kraków gets all the hype, but Szczecin’s lesser-known medieval stronghold is even more visually striking.

Think multiple Renaissance-era wings, massive brick walls, sturdy towers, and endless refined courtyards.

In the Old Town’s heart, St. James Cathedral is just as picturesque, with a massive Gothic brick tower you can climb for panoramic city views. Nearby, the Old Town Market Square is ringed by colorful restored townhouses and quirky coffeeshops.

5) Derry: Is It Irish? Is It British? Who Cares? Just Visit!

Unless you’re a Geography grad, this side of the United Kingdom can be a real head-scratcher.

Northern Ireland is one of the 4 nations of the UK — Irish by name and British by trade.

Headed by Belfast, one of the coolest up-and-coming cities across Europe, lesser-known Derry is a short train ride away, offering an astounding shoreline and history.

If you watch TV with a VPN like I do, you may have cracked the code to foreign gems like Fortitude and Derry Girls, the latter of which has spearheaded a new kind of tourism in town — set-jetting.

As spring has officially sprung, nearby beaches are becoming more of a draw, such as Downhill Strand and Benone Strand, but also a vibrant riverfront lined with locally beloved watering holes like Walled City Brewery, drawing its name since Derry is the only Irish walled city that’s still intact.

4) Bitola: Is Ohrid Old News Now?

Okay, we’ll take the blame for this one…

As many times as we’ve run Ohrid-based features here at Travel Off Path, it seems the news has finally reached far corners of the globe. This lakeside paradise should be way more popular if only people knew it existed.

To that I say, my job is complete.

But TimeOut is now touting another Macedonian marvel that even AI might take 10 tries to pinpoint, and that town is Bitola.

Hidden in plain sight from tourists of both Ohrid and North Macedonia’s capital Skopje, tourists will find an authentic townscape beaming with quirky architecture and backdropped by a dramatic mountainscape.

It’s wallet-friendly, brimming with history at every turn, and drop-dead gorgeous on the outskirts of town, especially Pelister National Park.

3) Ghent: Don’t Waffle, Head To Belgium’s Prized Postcard

We’ve been hearing mixed reviews about Brussels, Belgium’s largest city and most popular gateway into the country.

That said, Belgium is home to some truly stunning postcard towns if the big city life just isn’t for you.

Ghent is Exhibit A.

Set at the confluence of the Lys and Scheldt rivers, some locals have dubbed their beloved town the ‘Venice of the North’, and not as yet another Venice dupe because there’s a singular canal splitting Old Town.

No, Ghent truly oozes romance and storybook charm, just like Venice, though one could argue its layout is more aligned with that of Holland.

Anyway you slice it, Ghent fails to disappoint with its gorgeous aesthetics, walkable canals, and festival-heavy calendar year-round.

Plus, it feels much safer.

2) Ulcinj: Montenegro’s Next Hotspot

One could argue Montenegro is Europe’s trendiest vacation spot, but where are travelers going?

Bar? Budva? Kotor?

Well, it’s not Ulcinj…

Yet.

As more Americans have discovered the Balkans are well worth the long-haul flight, Montenegro has followed Albania’s rise to prominence.

Ironically, Ulcinj is more known for Albanian culture than its own, but that’s not the real draw here.

That would be its spectacular shoreline and unmatched Old Town, one that you’ll want to wander the same maze of cobbled walkways over and over to no end.

Grab a cappuccino at a cozy cafe, take in sweeping views of the blue Adriatic, and bask under the sun in a quaint cove in your own little slice of paradise.

1) Plovdiv: Bulgaria’s Most Welcoming City To Tourists

Full disclosure: I messed up my Bulgaria trip.

I fell for the hype of its capital, Sofia, during the early days of the remote work takeover, when social media was raving about Sofia as a cheap haven with glorious cathedrals and cafe culture.

Suffice to say, I didn’t like Sofia. It was my least-favorite European city until last winter when I visited Copenhagen.

That said, if I could do it all over, I wouldn’t have stayed on the bus at my stop in Plovdiv — I would’ve built my trip around it.

Why?

It’s truly one of Europe’s best-kept secrets despite being the oldest continuously inhabited city on the continent.

Yep, you read that right — and it shows its age well with immaculately preserved Roman Ruins like their main attraction, the Roman Theater of Philippopolis.

Bottom line, this city is full of surprises and won’t break the bank exploring its unspoiled wonders.

Not to sound braggadocious, but some of us have the ultimate freedom to choose our home base at any given time.

Of course, there are some bureaucratic hurdles to clear first, but pointing at a map, packing your bags with your laptop in tow and passport in hand is the ultimate dream.

I’ve graciously had the privilege of venturing to far corners of the world, banging out articles from cozy cafes, some great (and not-so-great) Airbnbs, and very, very questionable hostels (talking to you Istanbul!).

I want to be clear here: I’ve never obtained a digital nomad visa anywhere, but what I have done is work remotely extensively, whether it be a no-name city south of the border to almost unheard-of cities in Europe like Chisinau.

With that said, our team at Travel Off Path thought it would be a fun and insightful idea to reveal the 5 places I would never return to as a digital nomad, beginning with slight disappointment to pure disdain.

5) Chetumal, Mexico: Too Hot To Call Home

I love Chetumal. I think it’s a textbook “hidden gem” that still doesn’t get the credit it deserves despite brief bursts of trendiness over the years.

With paradisal beaches like Bacalar nearby that boast the most vibrant otherworldly blue hues of water I’ve ever seen, that’s still not enough of a selling point to plant roots for a lengthy time.

Why?

When travel memories flash back in my mind, the one place I felt like I might melt into the pavement is Chetumal.

This authentic town lying on the Mexico-Belize border may be cheap and feel truly authentic, but the constant — and I mean constant — taxi honking simply due to the color of my skin made me realize how women must feel being cat-called.

All the more reason to stay inside your air-conditioned room instead of the unbearable sun and overzealous locals…

The alternative:
Mahahual: A sleepy beach town close-by more well-equipped for nomads

4) Kingston, Jamaica: More Chaos Than Culture

My first trip to Jamaica was okay — not great, just okay.

I think the kids call that “mid”…

Even seasoned travelers like me make mistakes. I was expecting Kingston to be a cultural hotspot with reggae blasting and jerk chicken stands everywhere.

What I found was a dismantled cityscape full of chaos with very few attractions within the city limits.

Upon arrival, I thought I was going to be robbed, which I must admit, could’ve been my own pre-conceived notions about Kingston. Thankfully, I wasn’t.

Even after a successful trip safety-wise, I would not feel comfortable having my laptop out in public, even on the upscale side of New Kingston, where the top attractions include sampling delicious Blue Mountain coffee and visiting Bob Marley’s house.

Like Chetumal, it’s another city where you’ll be begging for A/C after walking a few blocks weaving through beggars and overpriced restaurants.

Plus, the only worthwhile beach is Hellshire, which I actually loved due to its off-radar appeal and fresh seafood shacks — and I mean shacks — but getting an Uber ride back was next to possible.

Overall, Kingston needs a lot of work and lacks an identity. Even locals begged me not to visit what seemed like half the city due to safety concerns (this was in 2023).

It’s just not a place to call home for more than a weekend.

The alternative:
Punta Cana never disappoints as it’s affordable, provides a great work-life balance, and is home to amazing beaches to visit as you wish.

3) Abu Dhabi, UAE: Dubai Is Simply Better

By Day 2 in Abu Dhabi, I had the same thought I have every time I go to Vegas — “what am I missing?”.

By the time it was time to board my bus to Abu Dhabi, my answer was “nothing’”.

Sometimes I forget I visited Abu Dhabi — that’s how much I disliked it.

This popular city was my first Middle Eastern destination, and it was a big disappointment.

Like Kingston, I expected to feel immersed in Arab culture. I didn’t at all.

I felt immersed in a perpetual Middle Eastern “Times Square”, where chains of retail stores never seemed to end and finding an actual street kabob was about as easy as finding a parking spot in Manhattan.

On the bright side, Abu Dhabi couldn’t have felt any safer, but also unbearable in the heat. Safety goes out the window when you want to spend your whole trip front and center by the A/C indoors.

Not only was the heat hard to tackle, but so were prices, especially since you’re charged to go to the best beaches.

The alternative:
Dubai lives up to the hype as a never-dull-moment megacity that has everything for everyone

2) Copenhagen, Denmark: I‘d Never Go Back For Any Reason

God forbid, if I came down with a horrible disease and the only cure was in Copenhagen, I’d say my time has come.

Despite having the coolest food truck park I’ve ever visited, that’s not enough of a selling point — especially in brutal winters — to keep me happy.

From a nomad perspective, I can’t imagine paying $8 for basic coffee drinks each day, nor navigating an entire city by bike (which is strongly encouraged by their society).

Transit is expensive, coffee is expensive, rent is expensive, and much of the city lacks European charm, work-life balance would be off the charts to keep up with bills, all while feeling you’re in no place special.

To my own surprise, Copenhagen surpassed Marseille in my book as the sketchiest European city I’ve been to since I couldn’t walk from my hotel 2 blocks without being physically grabbed by ‘ladies of the night’ at 7am each morning.

The alternative:
Helsinki is more affordable, friendlier, feels much safer, and locals don’t judge you for riding in a car.

1) Iquitos, Peru: It’s Just Not Built For Remote Workers

Iquitos is meant for adventures, which digital nomads obviously are, but they’re also workers who need reliable wi-fi, cafes to “work”, and a feeling of safety.

None apply here.

As cool as it was to go deep into the Amazon from Iquitos, the town itself is not for first-time travelers, or even first-time digital nomads.

Wi-fi goes out constantly, not only causing a headache for tight deadlines as I have, but also simply paying restaurant tabs with your credit card, and if that fails, you have to hope the ATM works (if you can find one).

It got so bad my girlfriend had to send me money via Western Union.

While there’s no denying its unique aspect as a “floating city”, this town feels anything but homey.

I’d visit again in a heartbeat to explore the rainforest, but not as a nomad. I’d leave space in my bag for some extra patience and keep hidden pockets full of cash just in case.

The alternative:
Just stay in Lima as it’s perfectly suited for nomads, with cafes galore, easy navigation, and underrated beaches

Cividale del Friuli

Tucked away in the verdant hills of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy’s northeasternmost region, Cividale del Friuli is a quaint riverside commune best known for its imposing stone bridge and well-preserved historic core.​

The said crossing, dubbed the Devil’s Bridge, spans a gorgeous alpine stream so clear you can see the rocks lying at the bottom.

The church towers, and pastel-hue townhouses that hang from the sides of the ravine only add to the timeless feel of the place, and if your heart usually skips a beat the minute you cross an ornate gate into a maze of cobbled, medieval lanes frozen in time, you might go into cardiac arrest there and then.

Before you make it to Cinque Terre proper, Portovenere is a preface of sorts, boasting the same pastel-colored skinny buildings, stacked on top of each other, a cliffside church built onto bare rock over the sea, and a medieval fortress standing watch over a scenic harbor.

The church, probably the main attraction here, carries that distinctly Ligurian ‘striped’ look, with alternating light and dark marble slats for the façade.

Oh, and its views over the deeply romantic Gulf of Poets? Easily rival the priciest panoramic terrace in Manarola, and it’s not like there’ll be a dozen other selfie-takers photobombing your perfect Med summer moment.

You see, you don’t even need to queue up for hours to get here, nor pay $15 on a watered-down Aperol Spritz just for a pic.

The coolest part is that Portovenere is a short 5-minute boat ride away to Palmaria Island, a slice of Mediterranean paradise criss-crossed by hiking trails, and ringed by secluded pebbly beaches with none of the Cinque Terre crowds. Just the perfect day trip away.

Cremona

Roughly 50 minutes by train from Milan, Cremona is an offbeat Italian city whose local claim to fame has a lot to do with violins and delicious food. Right, fair enough, it has a stunning Old Town, too, but we’ll get to that in a bit.​

To the music buffs out there, Cremona is probably the top destination you want to visit in Italy: the local Violin Museum is not only a (proud) display of the world’s most historic violins, but a celebration of the city’s world-famous luthiers: we’re talking Stradivari, Guarneri, and others.​

Many traditional workshops still operate in the vicinity of the museum, so you can see craftsmen at work, and if you’re passionate enough about the craft, even book musical tours.​

I have to be honest, I’m not the greatest violin geek out there, but I do love me some good old pasta, and Cremona earns a spot here for its tortelli cremonesi alone.

Square parcels of handmade pasta filled with ricotta, and sometimes, even grated Grana Padano cheese, it’s hands down the most delicious local variation of ravioli you’ll try anywhere in Northern Italy. You needn’t look far for it, either: any cremonesi trattoria will serve it up authentically.​

Oh, and have we mentioned Cremona’s Duomo is a marvelous Romanesque-Gothic ensemble with a stunningly carved main portal? Or that the 12th-century baptistery, octagonal in form and clad in medieval frescoes, rivals even Florence’s in beauty?​

Maybe you should also know the medieval Torrazzo is still one of the tallest brick bell towers in Europe, and you can climb it for panoramic city views… yeah, we think you’re sold on the idea of going.

Lecce

Speaking of Florence, you might want to swap it out for the so-called Florence of the South if maddening crowds aren’t your thing:

Located in the much-overlooked region of Puglia, which will soon start hosting Transatlantic flights directly from JFK, Lecce is incredibly rich in Baroque and Renaissance architecture, and if you’re a Rome aficionado, its Ancient Roman allure leaves nothing to be desired.

The Baroque masterpiece around here, Basilica di Santa Croce, is a surviving treasure from the Middle Ages with a delicately sculpted façade and a solemn, yet impactful interior.

Equally majestic, the neighboring Duomo has a glowing Renaissance soul that’s hard to ignore.

Don’t get us wrong, this is no Cupola di Brunelleschi, so keep your expectations realistic if you’ve already been wowed by Florence’s striking red dome, but there’s something about Lecce Cathedral’s soaring bell tower, lavish façade, and golden stone that just makes your gaze linger for a little longer than usual.

Enough with the churches. At the heart of the city’s ocher-colored pathways and labyrinthine center, Lecce boasts what’s possibly one of the most unique public squares in all of Italy:

Piazza Sant’Oronzo is built over the ruins of an Ancient Roman amphitheater, parts of which are still visible around the elliptical shape of the square, and sitting down for coffee in one of the many cafés in the area, and just soaking in the historic layers around you, just hits different.

Oh, needless to say, the Colosseum-bound busloads of tourists aren’t coming all the way out here.

Alghero

Who said you need to elbow your way through an indiscernible mass of bodies in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas to bask in that ancient Catalan atmosphere?

As weird as it may seem—trust us, having been all around Europe at this point, we’ve seen our fair share of cultural anomalies—this small coastal city named Alghero, perched on the northwestern coast of Sardinia, is like an extension of Catalonia in Italy.

You read that right.

Alghero was actually settled by Catalans in the 14th-century, after a Catalan king, Peter IV, stormed Sardinia and took over much of the island. Though Italians would reclaim the territory slowly over the centuries, Alghero remained staunchly Catalan.

It was populated by colonists from Iberia’s southwesternmost fringes, and it developed as a strong Catalan outpost from 1354 up to 1720. Naturally, it’s every bit as part of Italy now as the rest of Sardinia, but don’t be shocked if you hear a hint of Catalan being spoken by a nonno in a tabaccheria.

On top of that, all around town, you’ll find distinctly Catalan-Gothic buildings, most notably the cathedral, a centuries-old marvel of sandstone with typically Iberian pointed arches, and the quiet cloisters of the Franciscan-built Chiesa di San Francesco.

Now, let’s make one thing clear: this isn’t Barcelona’s Sagrada Família, so maybe reel in the high hopes if you’re chasing Gaudí-level drama, but if you’re all about honey-colored buildings, coral accents, and a marine-backed skyline, unassuming, laid-back Alghero’s your port of call.

If you’re not exactly a Mexican history buff—we’ve been to Cancun ourselves more times than we can count, but let’s be honest, that barely qualifies—you should know that Mexico once had a trade route called the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, or Inland Royal Route.

It carved right through the country’s heart, ferrying silver and gold from the mines to the ports. And one of those major mining hubs? You guessed it… San Luis Potosí.

During colonial times, the city’s wealth helped fuel the Spanish Empire’s splendor. But it wasn’t fully stripped of its own shine.

I mean, just look at the cathedral: this Baroque masterpiece towers over a lush central plaza, with the kind of impressive façade and solemn interior you can usually only see in Europe. It’s no wonder they once baptized this part of Mexico ‘New Spain’.

Straddling the azure coast of Oaxaca, it has that laid-back vibe that’s rare to find across most beach towns south of the border these days, and it pretty much welcomes everyone, from casual sun-seekers, to families, to watersport enthusiasts.

The main attraction here is Zicatela, an expansicve golden-sand beach famous worldwide for its giant waves. No wonder it’s called the ‘Mexican Pipeline’.

This is where surfers flock to for that adreline rush, prior to hitting the downtown bars. Beyond Zicatela, Carrizallilo is that quieter, beginner-friendly spot catering to both inexperienced surfers and regular swimmers, and Playa Bachoco is a must-see for turtle releases.

As for the town itself, by the day it’s pretty mellow, with dusty streets lined with cantinas, surf shops, and fruit stands, but come nightfall, it hums with European backpacker action.

Still, the atmosphere is lowkey, local, uncompromised: most parties tend to unfold at beachfront youth hostels, instead of Playa Del Carmen-style, glitzy beach clubs. Just Pacific moonlight and good vibes throughout.

Everyone raves about San Miguel de Allende and Mérida, but honestly, neither takes the crown for Mexico’s prettiest colonial city. That honor belongs to Santiago de Querétaro.

With a surprisingly-large Historic Center, criss-crossed with European-esque cobbled lanes, and peppered with centuries-old churches, Santiago de Querétaro is that magical Old World escape… all without the long-haul flight, or fingerprinting required.

If you have no idea what we mean by this, you might want to skip a number of European countries this year if you feel overly protective about how your biometric data is managed.

Back to Santiago itself, a true daughter of New Spain, it’s home to a monumental church and convent complex, the Tempo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo: super ornate, with gilded details, and a richly-sculpted exterior.

Other than the architectural prowess, Santiago is known for its delicious food.

For a local favorite, check out Mercado Escobedo, a prime downtown spot for antojitos and other cheap eats. If it’s a sit-down meal you’re after, Restaurante BAr 1810 is a historic address right on Plaza de Armas, serving refined regional fare.

You’ll be paying significantly more for the Historic Center terrace, and the polished ambiance, but it’s one of the best meals you’ll ever had (with one of the best views).

It also feels far more lived‑in: no hermetically‑sealed luxury bubble, nor nonstop bachelor‑party energy. It’s a place where people actually live, go about their daily affairs, and in their free time, bask in the sun and soak up the coastal nature like visitors would.

This is still Baja, mind you, but far more democratic. The most beautiful beaches aren’t only American big spender’s to rent.

The 19th‑century Nuestra Señora de La Paz Cathedral, overlooking a leafy Velasco Garden, and the family‑run waterfront eateries only deepen the sense of tranquility.

As for the nature?

Try dramatic desert‑meets‑sea landscapes, hidden coves for snorkeling, and raucous sea‑lion colonies. One of the most pristine islands in all of Mexico, uninhabited Espíritu Santo, is just a 45‑minute boat ride from La Paz.

Think untouched beaches, crystalline coves, and a landscape that feels almost otherworldly.

That said, Copan Ruinas is a beautiful village housing Mayan grounds — and impeccably preserved at that.

Honduras may not be considered safe per se, but there’s a reason many expats choose this as their go-to hideaways.

It’s very cheap and feels incredibly authentic without a Starbucks on every corner. Plus, locals couldn’t care less you’re here, creating a safe haven where locals are just going about their day-to-day life outside what happens to be an astounding Mayan complex.

Flying into San Pedro Sula and hopping aboard the bus ride for the books may not be alluring to some, but it stands out as one of my favorite travel memories in recent years.

4) Quarteira: Portugal’s Best Kept Secret 🇵🇹

Anyone looking to vacation in Portugal has scoured the famous Algarve region for sun, sand, and culture.

My advice?

Skip tourist-trappy Albufeira for Quarteira, a resort town along golden beaches and a buzzing marina that nobody ever seems to talk about.

Quarteira is actually easy to reach for an “off-path” destination, being a stone’s throw from the city of Faro.

I instantly fell in love with Quarteira for its non-touristy vibes despite being home to mega-cheap resorts like Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa, where I stayed, and near-empty beaches despite being drop-dead gorgeous.

Not to mention the food. This is one trip I refused to weigh myself when I got back home.

5) Harbin: Asia’s Most Unique City 🇨🇳

When my (now ex) girlfriend said she wanted to vacation somewhere cold, I’d like to think I understood the assignment.

Harbin, China is a name even many seasoned travelers don’t recognize, but hey, I’m a pro.

Set near the Russian border, Harbin feels worlds away from the China most travelers picture, blending onion-domed churches and Russian influence (ahem, vodka) with Asian delights.

Oddly enough, making Harbin even more unique, you have to go in the dead of winter when it may be below freezing, like when I went.

Why?

Opposite of the Songhua River (that will likely be frozen over with dedicated ice fisherman catching dinner), lies a sprawling artificial city made entirely of ice.

I repeat, a city. made. of. ice.

The Ice and Snow Festival, which originated in 1963, feels worlds away from the rest of the city, or anywhere else on the continent, to be frank, with numerous installations lighting up the chilly night sky.

Local news outlets report the next opening will likely be December 20, 2026. The good news is China has eased their entry requirements with a travel loophole — a 240-hour visa-free stay when transiting to another country.

Tampa proper is one of the most under-hyped cities in Florida. When you think of vibrant culture in the Sunshine State, it’s likely the powerhouse of Miami comes to mind first.

Some might say rightfully so, but Tampa’s overlooked Ybor City Cuban culture shouldn’t be skipped.

That said, Tampa’s cluster of postcard beach towns, such as Clearwater and Siesta Key, may be jaw-droppers, but Costa Rica’s Pura Vida lifestyle goes unmatched.
