To no surprise, London, Paris, and Barcelona are not Europe’s cheapest destinations.

With a name like Travel Off Path, sometimes you have to do just that to save the big bucks.

A new U.K. based report unveiled explicit details as far as pricing goes, listing 4 underrated cities that are well worth your while for an affordable Euro-trip.

Some trendy, some lesser-known, and one being one of Europe’s all-time biggest comeback stories, all of them are vibrant, cultural, and very under-hyped.

I’ve had the fortune of visiting a couple of them, and already have the other pair on my wishlist — not only to stretch my budget on my next globetrotting jaunt, but to experience more authentic cities without the fluff of Europe’s icons.

4) Belgrade, Serbia

As a former capital of Yugoslavia, you might think Serbia’s capital is drab and stale, but I was blown away in my brief stopover in Belgrade.

Yeah, you have to get used to cigarette smoke at seemingly every restaurant, but wandering the gritty yet grand streetscape couldn’t have been more refreshing for a sense of discovery.

I can attest that Belgrade is cheap. It doesn’t matter if it’s your hotel, a local beer, or a taste of back home at Mickey D’s, you won’t go broke enjoying a city break here, which is one of many reasons why digital nomads in particular love it.

Another reason is safety. Long gone are the days of Belgrade being defined by 1990’s headlines.

Travelers currently give Serbia a safety score of 86/100 on our Safety Index, though I will say Belgrade is the only place in all my travels where I’ve been randomly stopped by the police just to check my passport.

3) Tirana, Albania

Another capital I’ve had the pleasure of visiting is Tirana, but full disclosure: the real highlight was the country next door.

Tirana is very underrated, especially if you’re a foodie.

Think Athens-style menus without the touristy prices, plus plentiful cafes where you can sip espresso with Mount Dajti in view and calls to prayer echoing in the background.

While this is another city digital nomads love for its safety and affordability across the board, Tirana’s real purpose, if we’re being honest, is a springboard to either Albania’s phenomenal coastline or to one of my favorite all-time destinations, Ohrid, North Macedonia — an easy bus ride away, and well worth it.

2) Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest is one of Europe’s unsung capitals for a myriad of reasons — one being you can Bucha-rest easy thanks to its thermal spas and leafy parks.

While some of its communist-era edges still show — or charm, depending on your appetite for concrete — overall, Bucharest is a delight to visit.

Whether you’re indulging in papanasi, a traditional fried donut to kickstart your day with a sugar rush, or wandering past architectural eye candy you didn’t expect, or taking a train ride out to hush-hush locales like Sinaia, this city is one of Europe’s easiest to plan out and stay long-term without busting your budget.

Little-known budget airline HiSky intended to make Bucharest so much more accessible for Americans with an exciting new Chicago-Bucharest route set for June 2026, but ultimately canceled.

However, they do still serve JFK, so East Coasters can still reach Bucharest with ease and be welcomed by a slightly Old Town, immaculate castles reminiscent of Dracula’s lair, grand boulevards, and cafe-lined streets that still feel wildly unknown.

1) Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

One of Europe’s most storied cities — for both better and worse — there’s no denying its insanely cheap and one of the continent’s best-kept secrets, not only for its historical significance, but for stunning nature, cafe culture, and fascinating East-meets-West atmosphere with a mish-mash of cultures, including Orthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats and Muslims.

Sarajevo can be a tear-jerker if you visit its captivating museums covering the Siege of Sarajevo and Bosnian War, but it can also feel like a celebration of resilience, with a maze of bazaars, cozy coffee houses, and plates of ćevapi that cost less than your morning Americano back home.

What makes Sarajevo especially special is how quickly the city changes around you — one minute it feels like an old-world bazaar, the next it looks like a grand European capital.

1. Aruba

Safety Index Score: 98/100

Aruba crushed the competition, scoring higher than any other destination on our entire index. It is affectionately called “One Happy Island,” and the moment you step off the plane, you understand exactly why. The tension just melts away.

• The Vibe: You do not feel trapped in your resort here. I have personally walked back to my hotel late at night after a few drinks and felt totally completely fine. It is an island that encourages you to get out and explore.
• The Experience: You can spend your mornings hunting for amazing street murals in the town of San Nicolas, and your afternoons driving a UTV through the wild, rocky desert on the north side of the island.
• The Best Perk: Aruba has a pre-clearance agreement with the U.S. government. You actually go through U.S. customs before you fly home. When you land back in the States, you just grab your bags and walk out like it was a regular domestic flight!

2. Cancun, Mexico

Safety Index Score: 92/100

Cancun sits right on the bright blue Mexican Caribbean, and while it sometimes gets a wild reputation on the news, travelers on the ground tell a totally different story.

• The Vibe: The famous “Hotel Zone” in Cancun is built like a fortress of fun. It is heavily patrolled by tourist police and private security, meaning the crime rate inside this bubble is incredibly low. Travelers feel super secure walking between the giant resorts and upscale shopping malls.
• The Experience: Cancun is simply the easiest beach trip you can take. You fly into a massive, modern airport, hop in a quick shuttle, and within an hour, you are floating in a gorgeous infinity pool with a taco in your hand.

3. Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Safety Index Score: 92/100

Just an hour south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen offers that same warm Mexican Caribbean water, but with a much slower, walking-friendly pace. It is a massive magnet for digital nomads and expats from all over the world.

• The Vibe: Unlike Cancun, where you mostly stay at your giant resort, Playa is all about walking. The heart of the town is 5th Avenue, a massive pedestrian-only street that stretches for miles.
• The Experience: You can spend hours walking up and down 5th Avenue, popping into tiny coffee shops, buying local art, and eating amazing street food. Because the street is always packed with families and travelers, it feels incredibly safe and welcoming day or night.

4. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Safety Index Score: 91/100

If your ultimate goal is to totally shut your brain off and let someone else do the cooking, Punta Cana is the undisputed king.

• The Vibe: Punta Cana is famous for its massive, all-inclusive resort bubbles. These properties are huge, highly secure, and have absolutely everything you need right on site. You never actually have to leave the property if you don’t want to.
• The Experience: Travelers love Punta Cana because it offers pure, uninterrupted luxury. You wake up, grab unlimited food at the breakfast buffet, and walk straight out to some of the softest white sand on the planet. The resorts work hard to keep the beaches clean and totally secure, giving you the ultimate peace of mind.

5. Costa Rica

Safety Index Score: 84/100

Okay, while Costa Rica is in Central America, its eastern edge boasts an absolutely stunning Caribbean coast. It is the perfect spot for travelers who want to trade giant swimming pools for wild nature.

• The Vibe: Costa Rica is famous for its “Pura Vida” (pure life) lifestyle. It is a country that focuses heavily on protecting nature and keeping things peaceful. In fact, the country is so dedicated to peace that it does not even have a standing army!
• The Experience: Travelers looking for a safe adventure love it here. You can zip-line through the thick jungle canopy, watch sloths hang out in the trees, and surf in the warm Caribbean water. The locals are famous for being incredibly friendly and helpful to visitors, making it a wonderful spot to safely unplug and get back to nature.

Busan: Asia’s Top Spot To Kickstart Summer

South Korea may have Seoul, but they’re not a Seoul-dier.

Busan is where the country’s K-Pop craze meets vibrant beaches, all without sacrificing Seoul’s Korean barbecue sizzle and mesmerizing neon streetscape.

Any globetrotter knows that city beaches are 50/50 at best in terms of quality and matching up with the postcards we’ve all seen.

Busan is on the good side of the 50/50, where scenic coastline stretches past golden beaches, rocky bluffs, and glassy high-rises — and you can get an even better view on one of the city’s quirky train carts, known as the Sky Capsule.

Haeundae is renowned as Busan’s must-see beach, while Gamcheon Culture Village is a popular photo op for its pastel maze of hillside homes, eye-popping murals, and sea-view alleyways.

No matter how you end up planning your trip, June feels absolutely splendid with average temperatures of 72°F.

Shimla: India’s Best-Kept Secret

Is there any country more wondrous than India?

Sometimes wonderfully chaotic, sometimes wonderfully delicious, and sometimes wonderfully off-putting — at least according to my street food algorithm.

But wondrous nonetheless, with no better time to visit than July with 81–88°F weather.

You know New Delhi, Mumbai, and perhaps Udaipur if you’re travel nerds like us, but one place that’s more reminiscent of Valparaíso or Guanajuato at first glance is little-known Shimla, boasting a kaleidoscopic cityscape spilling down the Himalayan foothills.

This once British-colonized town still reflects its history, especially for travelers ready to be wowed.

Take the Hogwarts-esque Viceregal Lodge and the Rothney Castle, for example — truly breathtaking to see.

Shimla is full of surprises across the board, and mostly good at that. Being well-kempt, it’s a great place to indulge in Indian cuisine without worrying about travelers’ arch nemesis “Delhi belly”, but do watch out for pesky local thieves, rhesus monkeys.

Sendai: The Best Of Japan Wrapped Into One Underrated City

Think you have to visit Tokyo and/or Osaka?

That’s because you don’t know about Sendai.

Lonely Planet touts this virtually unknown city as the “best alternative to well-known cities”, with “everything you came to Japan for – fresh sushi, wacky karaoke, ancient temples”.

I’m sold already.

Japan is captivating end to end. That’s why more airlines are launching new flights to the country’s far-flung cities because they’re worth your while.

Sendai is only an hour and a half from Tokyo via bullet train, a bucket-list item for sure.

Few places make you feel more like a local than Sendai, a city that has yet to be swallowed up by mainstream tourism.

August is said to be a perfect time to visit weather-wise, with highs of just 80°F due to its cooler mountainous climate, earning the moniker “City of Trees”.

Chengdu: China’s Panda-monium Powerhouse

China is such a global powerhouse, in more ways than one, it’s hard to keep up with its massive metropolises.

Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong are the obvious headliners, but Chengdu may be the one that piques Americans’ interest most.

After all, travelers flock to my hometown of San Diego to see pandas napping and gnawing on bamboo like puppies with a new toy.

In Chengdu, though, you can see the real deal in China’s beloved “panda capital”, where visitors can see babies at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base.

There are no direct flights from the U.S., but easy connections from other Chinese cities.

While the weather is in August with an average of only 77°F, the real heat comes from the region’s notoriously spicy Sichuan cuisine.

We’re not here to discuss whether climate change is truly humanity’s greatest woe or not, but we guess we can all agree these summers are getting unbearably hotter each passing year…

Especially in the sun-scorched Mediterranean.

Listen, we love a little Greek island hopping and scenic Amalfi drives ourselves, but not when it’s over 90 degrees out and it’s barely 11 in the morning, and that shoddy, overpriced guesthouse you booked can’t even get their AC unit to function.

All of this to say, we might be giving Southern Europe a miss this year.

Instead, we’re heading all the way north, where it’s still cozy and warm to be out in shorts (and maybe a light sweater for when the coastal winds start blowing), but at least you won’t be fighting for dear life under an unforgiving sun, nor increasing your skin cancer risks by twentyfold.

Flåm, Norway

A tiny village in southwestern Norway, located at the innermost end of Aurlandsfjord, Flåm is the unofficial ‘fjord capital‘ of the country.

It’s obviously directly on a fjord, with Nordic-style spas and cute little heritage hotels straddling the water, but what you may not know is that Aurland is only a small branch of the much more vast Sognefjord, Norway’s largest and deepest.

A short drive out of town will take you to Stegastein, a viewpoint that juts out high above the winding waterways, or if you’ve packed your walking shoes, Brekkefossen is a trailhead passing cascading waterfalls and offering the most insanely beautiful mountain views.

Viewpoints and scenic wooden-built hamlets aside, Flåm’s must-do activity is the Flåm Railway:

Rattling up the glacial Hardangervidda plateau, it connects the fjord village to the mountaintop settlement of Myrdal, and it even stops for a few minutes at intermediate stops so you can get the perfect panoramic selfie.

The best thing about visiting Norway this summer? Unlike most of (Western) Europe, it remains relatively safe and low-risk for American travelers.

U.S. authorities officially consider it a Level 1 destination, meaning Americans have very little, if anything, to worry about when traveling around the country, and it currently scores an impressive 85/100 on the Traveler Safety Index:

Certified-safe as Norway may be, there may still be travel alerts applying to different parts of the country, especially this far west in the fjords, where nature and climate conditions is everything but predictable.

That’s why it’s paramount, whether you’re Norway-bound or anywhere else, to do a quick destination check on the Travel Advisory Checker in the days leading up to your departure.

Shetland, Scotland

• Average lowest temperature: 50°F
• Average rainy days in summer: 16–18 per month

The Shetland archipelago is Scotland’s northernmost collective of islands, lying some 110 miles from Great Britain proper, and it’s one of the wildest, most remote, culturally-distinct destinations you could visit across the pond.

There are numerous islands to explore, and so very little time, though if you’re flying out all this way, you might want to spend the longest on the Shetland Mainland, or the largest landmass.

It actually feels more Nordic than Scottish in some ways, with treeless landscapes, tiny villages, and huge skies.

Lerwick is the main town and best base to stay, small yet lively, with a postcard-ready harbor, old stone streets, and traditional pubs.

Where the magic truly happens, however, is when you go off-path in one of those quiet coastal roads: regardless of the route you pick, rest assured dramatic coastal cliffs and uncrowded sandy coves await.

Don’t miss Jarlshof, probably Scotland’s best-preserved ancient site. You can walk through thousands of years of history here, with cobbled paths passing prehistoric houses and later remains of Viking forts.

Just word of advice before you book that Scotland island-hopping adventure this summer? The country is part of the U.K., and as of this year, Americans must apply for a travel permit prior to flying.

Gotland, Sweden

Viking Europe’s truly where it’s at this summer, and if you thought peak Nordic heritage was somewhere up in Norway or in the confines of Northern Scotland, you’re in for a big surprise.

For those who aren’t easily discouraged by long, overnight ferry crossings, you can catch a sleeper boat in Stockholm this summer that will take you to Gotland, Sweden’s top summery retreat, home to windswept Baltic nature, picturesque coastal scenes, and the kind of medieval heritage you thought could only possibly exist in storybooks.

Visby is arguably the prettiest historic settlement in the entire Nordics:

Think sturdy town walls, complete with towers and ramparts that still encircle the urban perimeter, cobblestone streets running along quaint wooden townhouses, and church spires that almost pierce the moody cloudy skies.

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and your best bet at soaking up that Old World charm without dealing with the usual Mediterranean heat and the whole cruise crowd chaos of it all.

By the way, it’s not a Scandi trip until you’ve had your fair share of cinnamon buns and Espresso House caramel gold chocolate, people-watching on a sunny terrace. You know, a good old, quality fika time.

Saaremaa, Estonia

We’re keeping it Baltic-local for this one. The largest island in Estonia, an already pretty-offbeat European country you’ve all been sleeping on for years, Saaremaa feels like an even-more lowkey, relaxed Gotland minus the hefty price tags.

It’s also remote, but easier to reach from its parent nation’s mainland—bus from Tallinn to Virtsu port, Virtsu to Kuivastu on Muhu Island, bus or drive from Muhu to Saaremaa via the causeway.

Kuressaare, the main settlement, is one of the nicest little towns in the Baltics, especially around Kuressaare Castle.

Think wooden mills, family-run cafés, Finnish-inspired spas, a beautiful sea promenade, and even a hint of a nightlife without Tallinn’s stag do rush.

That said, Saaremaa’s greatest appeal lies in its verdant, untouched nature.

It has pine forests, juniper fields, smaller villages that have barely seen time go by since the Middle Ages, and Baltic beaches with none of Southern Europe’s crowds.

Just beware of the water temps up here: as inviting as those crystal-clear shorelines may be, this is not some island in Greece, after all.

Gijón, Spain

• Average lowest temperature: 61°F
• Average rainy days in summer: 6–8 per month

We know what you’re probably thinking: how could Spain possibly feature on a list of cooler-climate destinations in Europe when it’s the hottest place in the entire continent?

It turns out this may be true for the southern half of Spain, but as for the northern reaches of the country, which are bathed not by the bubbling-hot Mediterranean, or assailed by the occasional Saharan heatwave, it is actually pretty… cool?

Gijón sits on the North Atlantic shore, and it’s maybe not how you’ve pictured your Spanish summers to go like. It’s even better:

Swap the Madrid pastel-hue houses for weathered stone façades, Seville’s touristy tapas bars for local-frequented seafood taverns run by local families and their chatty owners, and Barcelona’s tourist-packed Gothic Quarter for Cimavilla, a historic fishermen district characterised by its narrow cobbled alleys and salt-weathered charm.

Unlike other destinations on this list that lie way too north of the Mediterranean belt to double as proper beach getaways, Gijón actually offers pretty decent weather and swimming conditions in the warmer months.

No, it’s not Mallorca, the water remains gelid compared to your average Spanish coastal hub, but on that odd heatwave day where it’s over 86°F outside, you’ll be glad you can dip your toes in Playa de San Lorenzo’s refreshing, azure seas.

Albania has somewhat quietly drawn European vacationers (which means some unsightly swimwear) in recent years.

Obviously, Albania has become one of Europe’s hottest countries for its affordability, history, and world-class beach towns like Ksamil.

With crystal-clear water, it’s earned the “Maldives” tag — something it undeniably does live up to without having to travel to what seems like Middle-earth.

The difference is what you’ll find once you’re there: buzzing beach clubs, seafood feasts, and tiny islands that don’t require a seaplane to reach.

2) Bonafacio: France’s Unsung Paradise 🇫🇷

You don’t have to navigate the sketchy streets of Marseille, the uppity beach clubs of St. Tropez, or the shoulder-to-shoulder promenade crowds of Nice to enjoy an epic beach vacay in France.

You hear of Spain and Italy’s islands, but France’s island of Corsica should have a seat at the table too.

The town of Bonifacio sits on Corsica’s southern tip, where its picturesque Old Town is just as striking as the shimmering sea.

Perched atop dramatic limestone cliffs, this overlooked hideaway feels worlds away from mainland France’s usual summer hotspots, swapping flashy resorts for boutique stays, medieval streets, boat trips, and nearby beaches with the kind of clear blue water worth flying “across the pond” for.

Bonafacio makes a great base as the town itself is a delight to wander, as are its gorgeous neighbors, Rondinara, Pianterella, and Sperone.

Time will tell for arguably Asia’s most historic and cultured nation. But one thing you don’t often think of when planning a trip to China is its beautiful coastline.

Believe it or not, I can attest to that, having visited the island of Xiamen, but Sanya may be even more pristine.

Sanya sits on Hainan’s southern tip, where palm-lined beaches, clear tropical water, and forested mountains make it feel far removed from the bustling metropolises you likely envision first.

In 2026, global travel is facing a major safety clash. While the travel industry continues to promote tropical vacations, the U.S. State Department has kept—and in some cases expanded—its strictest “Level 4: Do Not Travel” warnings for several popular coastal areas.

A Level 4 alert is the highest possible security warning. ^{It means the local government is highly unstable and the U.S. government likely won’t be able to help you in an emergency. Despite these warnings, millions of tourists still visit these locations, hoping that staying inside resort “bubbles” will keep them safe.}

Here are the 4 main beach destinations currently under a Level 4 warning for 2026:

1. The Aragua Coast, Venezuela: The Off-Limits Paradise

One of the most popular beach stretches for locals and former international tourists is the Aragua state coastline, home to legendary spots like Ocumare de la Costa and Choroní. While much of Venezuela was recently downgraded to Level 3, the State Department is crystal clear on this region: Aragua state (outside of Maracay) is Level 4.

I have friends who used to rave about the boat rides from Choroní to hidden beaches like Chuao, where the cocoa plantations meet the Caribbean. The scenery is world-class, but the operational reality in 2026 is grim. Because of the presence of irregular armed groups and the high risk of kidnapping, this entire coastline remains strictly off-limits for U.S. officials and is highly discouraged for private citizens.

• The Reality: There is virtually no consular safety net here. If you are detained or injured on an Aragua beach, the U.S. Embassy in Caracas—which is only just beginning a phased reopening—possesses almost zero capacity to assist you.
• Spring 2026 Intel: As of March 19, 2026, the U.S. has officially retired the “Wrongful Detention” indicator for Venezuela as a whole, but they have simultaneously added Aragua to the “Areas of Increased Risk” list for crime and kidnapping.

2. Manzanillo, Mexico: The Port Conflict

Located in the state of Colima, Manzanillo is internationally recognized as the “Sailfish Capital of the World.” It’s known for its striking, Greek-inspired white architecture and pristine bays. However, Colima carries a strict Level 4 designation due to its strategic maritime infrastructure.

Manzanillo is the busiest cargo port in Mexico, making it the most coveted territory for cartels importing precursor chemicals for synthetic drugs. The turf war over port access has resulted in astronomical homicide rates throughout the state.

• The Workaround: The State Department permits U.S. government employees to travel strictly to the central tourist and port areas, specifically the Peninsula Santiago and the Las Hadas area.
