Already seeing an influx of remote workers from the United States, Germany, France and various Scandinavian countries, a “come one, come all” approach is being implemented as hefty investments pour in to make it Europe’s top digital nomad hub for years to come.

Athens Wants You To Stay A While

Not to sound like Uncle Sam, but hey, that is my name.

With the remote-work craze still in full force despite many old-school bosses trying to reel them back into cubicles, the army of laptop warriors may not have won every battle, but the war is tilting in their favor.

Some pockets of Europe have had it up to their necks with digital nomads taking over their city and driving up prices, particularly Spain, where protests are common.

Greece, however, is still largely affordable with the exception of Santorini, with plenty of room to embrace more nomads living out of their backpacks.

The plan is to make even more room, actually. Instead of relying on Europe’s notoriously cozy apartments to find a space to comfortably work, Athens is determined to open more workspaces across the city.

Leaning on affordability compared with places like London, Paris, and Amsterdam, Athens knows they have a leg up to lure more remote workers long-term since many are freelancers with shifting monthly budgets.

According to Numbeo, rent in Athens is over 50% cheaper than in Paris.

As cool as this storied city is on its own for a vacation, living here and waking up to backdrops of the Acropolis and the gleaming Saronic Gulf, they are boldly attempting to rebrand itself as a serious digital nomad and flexible-work hub, not just a history-and-islands stopover.

Digital Nomad Requirements In Greece

As it goes with many digital nomad hotspots, each nation sets forth its own requirements to be an official nomad.

Some are more stringent than others, but Greece is relatively straightforward, asking applicants to meet the following:

• Minimum income: roughly $4,100 after tax and the threshold increases to $4,920 if bringing a loved one, and about $615 more per month with each additional dependent
• Proof of employment: you must be able to prove you are employed remotely, or that you have signed contracts with companies based outside of Greece
• Health insurance: obtaining a health insurance policy is mandatory, and it must be valid for the entirety of your stay in Greece
• Criminal history: You must not have been convicted of serious crimes in your home country, and you may be asked to provide a clean record
• Application: documents must be submitted at a Greek consulate or embassy in your home country prior to your move
• Validity period: stay up to 2 years, with possibility to renew as long as you continue fulfilling initial requirements

Beyond cheaper rent than many major European cities, Athens gives digital nomads plenty of reasons to stick around:

• Sunny weather: over 300 days of sunshine a year, with mild winters and long stretches of warm weather.
• Speedy wifi: a growing co-working scene provides fast internet, and free wifi is easy to find
• Convenient transit: Metro, tram, bus, and suburban rail links make it easy to move around the city without a car and ferries make amazing trips to nearby islands seamless
• Tipping not expected: tipping is appreciated, but not mandatory — rounding up or leaving a little extra is usually enough to save you money

How Safe Is It To Live In Athens?

Safety may be the biggest selling point of all when it comes to calling a new city home, especially in a foreign country.

According to our real-time Safety Index, travelers are scoring Athens’ safety with 81/100, which is pretty great.

As iconic as Athens may be, there are some rough spots. It’s not all postcard streets of bougainvillea-draped tavernas and Acropolis views.

Keep in mind, my lone visit to Athens was pre-pandemic, but it’s the only city in all my travels where I was pickpocketed — and it almost completely butchered our trip.

In other words, don’t keep your passport in cargo shorts. Better yet, just don’t wear cargo shorts, fellas.

Piggybacking off my own experience as well as fellow travelers, the U.S. State Department last updated Greece’s travel advisory in October 2025, classifying it as “Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions” — the lowest possible designation.

Not to sound braggadocious, but some of us have the ultimate freedom to choose our home base at any given time.

Of course, there are some bureaucratic hurdles to clear first, but pointing at a map, packing your bags with your laptop in tow and passport in hand is the ultimate dream.

I’ve graciously had the privilege of venturing to far corners of the world, banging out articles from cozy cafes, some great (and not-so-great) Airbnbs, and very, very questionable hostels (talking to you Istanbul!).

I want to be clear here: I’ve never obtained a digital nomad visa anywhere, but what I have done is work remotely extensively, whether it be a no-name city south of the border to almost unheard-of cities in Europe like Chisinau.

With that said, our team at Travel Off Path thought it would be a fun and insightful idea to reveal the 5 places I would never return to as a digital nomad, beginning with slight disappointment to pure disdain.

5) Chetumal, Mexico: Too Hot To Call Home

I love Chetumal. I think it’s a textbook “hidden gem” that still doesn’t get the credit it deserves despite brief bursts of trendiness over the years.

With paradisal beaches like Bacalar nearby that boast the most vibrant otherworldly blue hues of water I’ve ever seen, that’s still not enough of a selling point to plant roots for a lengthy time.

Why?

When travel memories flash back in my mind, the one place I felt like I might melt into the pavement is Chetumal.

This authentic town lying on the Mexico-Belize border may be cheap and feel truly authentic, but the constant — and I mean constant — taxi honking simply due to the color of my skin made me realize how women must feel being cat-called.

All the more reason to stay inside your air-conditioned room instead of the unbearable sun and overzealous locals…

The alternative:
Mahahual: A sleepy beach town close-by more well-equipped for nomads

4) Kingston, Jamaica: More Chaos Than Culture

My first trip to Jamaica was okay — not great, just okay.

I think the kids call that “mid”…

Even seasoned travelers like me make mistakes. I was expecting Kingston to be a cultural hotspot with reggae blasting and jerk chicken stands everywhere.

What I found was a dismantled cityscape full of chaos with very few attractions within the city limits.

Upon arrival, I thought I was going to be robbed, which I must admit, could’ve been my own pre-conceived notions about Kingston. Thankfully, I wasn’t.

Even after a successful trip safety-wise, I would not feel comfortable having my laptop out in public, even on the upscale side of New Kingston, where the top attractions include sampling delicious Blue Mountain coffee and visiting Bob Marley’s house.

Like Chetumal, it’s another city where you’ll be begging for A/C after walking a few blocks weaving through beggars and overpriced restaurants.

Plus, the only worthwhile beach is Hellshire, which I actually loved due to its off-radar appeal and fresh seafood shacks — and I mean shacks — but getting an Uber ride back was next to possible.

Overall, Kingston needs a lot of work and lacks an identity. Even locals begged me not to visit what seemed like half the city due to safety concerns (this was in 2023).

It’s just not a place to call home for more than a weekend.

The alternative:
Punta Cana never disappoints as it’s affordable, provides a great work-life balance, and is home to amazing beaches to visit as you wish.

3) Abu Dhabi, UAE: Dubai Is Simply Better

By Day 2 in Abu Dhabi, I had the same thought I have every time I go to Vegas — “what am I missing?”.

By the time it was time to board my bus to Abu Dhabi, my answer was “nothing’”.

Sometimes I forget I visited Abu Dhabi — that’s how much I disliked it.

This popular city was my first Middle Eastern destination, and it was a big disappointment.

Like Kingston, I expected to feel immersed in Arab culture. I didn’t at all.

I felt immersed in a perpetual Middle Eastern “Times Square”, where chains of retail stores never seemed to end and finding an actual street kabob was about as easy as finding a parking spot in Manhattan.

On the bright side, Abu Dhabi couldn’t have felt any safer, but also unbearable in the heat. Safety goes out the window when you want to spend your whole trip front and center by the A/C indoors.

Not only was the heat hard to tackle, but so were prices, especially since you’re charged to go to the best beaches.

The alternative:
Dubai lives up to the hype as a never-dull-moment megacity that has everything for everyone

2) Copenhagen, Denmark: I‘d Never Go Back For Any Reason

God forbid, if I came down with a horrible disease and the only cure was in Copenhagen, I’d say my time has come.

Despite having the coolest food truck park I’ve ever visited, that’s not enough of a selling point — especially in brutal winters — to keep me happy.

From a nomad perspective, I can’t imagine paying $8 for basic coffee drinks each day, nor navigating an entire city by bike (which is strongly encouraged by their society).

Transit is expensive, coffee is expensive, rent is expensive, and much of the city lacks European charm, work-life balance would be off the charts to keep up with bills, all while feeling you’re in no place special.

To my own surprise, Copenhagen surpassed Marseille in my book as the sketchiest European city I’ve been to since I couldn’t walk from my hotel 2 blocks without being physically grabbed by ‘ladies of the night’ at 7am each morning.

The alternative:
Helsinki is more affordable, friendlier, feels much safer, and locals don’t judge you for riding in a car.

1) Iquitos, Peru: It’s Just Not Built For Remote Workers

Iquitos is meant for adventures, which digital nomads obviously are, but they’re also workers who need reliable wi-fi, cafes to “work”, and a feeling of safety.

None apply here.

As cool as it was to go deep into the Amazon from Iquitos, the town itself is not for first-time travelers, or even first-time digital nomads.

Wi-fi goes out constantly, not only causing a headache for tight deadlines as I have, but also simply paying restaurant tabs with your credit card, and if that fails, you have to hope the ATM works (if you can find one).

It got so bad my girlfriend had to send me money via Western Union.

While there’s no denying its unique aspect as a “floating city”, this town feels anything but homey.

I’d visit again in a heartbeat to explore the rainforest, but not as a nomad. I’d leave space in my bag for some extra patience and keep hidden pockets full of cash just in case.

The alternative:
Just stay in Lima as it’s perfectly suited for nomads, with cafes galore, easy navigation, and underrated beaches

I, as well as others on our expert team here at Travel Off Path, have had the distinct pleasure of visiting Istanbul, which means we’ve stood on the edge of Europe and Asia.

Not to boil any geographer’s blood, but there’s a swath of countries, such as Georgia, that feel more European than Asian despite being classified as Asian.

Maybe I’ve explored one too many Chinatowns in my travels, but cheap street noodles and foo dog statues don’t even remotely encapsulate Asia’s vast continent.

Whether you want to call the following undiscovered Europe or Asia, you’re not wrong.

Tomato, tomahto.

But if there’s one thing you should absolutely know about it its that it’s very affordable for long-term travelers, especially digital nomads who have up-and-down paychecks.

That’s right — little-known Armenia is one of the best-kept secrets in the nomad world, and we’re here to crack it open as April to October is the sunniest stretch of the year.

Armenia Welcomes All

Winter is all but wrapped up, including for Armenia, whose sprawling capital city of Yerevan saw a high of 56 degrees as of this writing.

Over the next month or so, the weather will become a lot more enjoyable throughout this off-path nation that’s easier to reach than you might suspect.

More importantly, if making an extraordinary move beyond the usual nomad hotspots really piques your interest, they make it super easy to apply with 3 minimal requirements:

• Proof of a valid passport
• Have a remote job as a freelancer or business owner
• Be willing to register a business in Armenia ($7.60 fee)

That’s it — no bank statements or tax returns needed. But you will need to submit additional photos and a medical certificate.

Once you pay an application fee ranging from $264 – $353 and apply for a resident permit, you’re golden.

Long-term stays are allowed for up to 1 – 5 years. To be exact, renewable temporary residence permits are valid for one year and permanent residence permits are valid for 5 years (and also renewable).

While not technically a ‘digital nomad visa’ per se, self-employed remote workers can bypass any bureaucratic headaches by simply applying for a tax ID, which buttons up the last hurdle to formalize your new your new home base.

Cafes Galore In The “Pink City”

Not to pivot to an unwanted history lesson, but the reason Armenia largely remains undiscovered from a tourist perspective is its dark past, including a horrific genocide shoved in the back of history books that has long overshadowed the country’s majestic beauty as a must-visit destination.

The point being, Armenia, as it stands today, feels relatively new with vibrant arts and a growing tech scene, making it a surprisingly seamless fit for many digital nomads.

Chances are your gateway into the country will be Yerevan, which serves as a great base to get your bearings before venturing out for even lesser-known stunners on your free weekends, such as Old Town Gyumri.

Known as the “Pink City” for its dusty-rose cityscape, it’s brimming with cafes that couldn’t be better for your daily office to fake-smile and nod your way through Zoom meetings, all while sipping “soorj”, Armenia’s traditional coffee that locals rave about.

The Elephant In The Room: Iran Is Armenia’s Neighbor

If you’re coming all this way, surely you want to know Armenia is safe — and it is.

So, let’s unpack them all, shall we?

According to our hand-dandy safety gadget, showcasing real-time data from travelers like you, Armenia is currently scoring a 75/100 (subject to change) on par with icons like Paris.

Given the ongoing Middle East conflict with no official end date in sight, visiting any country attached to Iran might seem jarring, but the majority of Armenia’s worthwhile destinations lies what feels like worlds away from the border, which is only 27 miles in length.

That said, the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan issued an alert on February 28, 2026 as part of a broader alert for the Middle East, essentially asking Americans to keep aware of their surroundings, avoid large gatherings, and know flights are at higher risk than usual for delays and cancellations.

Additionally, the State Department has not updated their advisory for Armenia since last summer, which speaks for itself travelers are no more at risk than before you know what hit the fan.

For all the digital nomads out there who’ve grown disillusioned with Europe’s overly bureaucratic pathways to residency, or are tired of waiting for Mexico to finally drop that remote work visa, one of the fastest-rising expat hubs in Asia just dropped its own DNV.

A tropical island south of India, surrounded by the beautiful Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is rolling out a Digital Nomad Visa with some of the easiest requirements we’ve seen yet.

No impossible-to-achieve financial thresholds, none of the usual truckload of documents, and definitely not intrusive vetting checks and biometric hoops: Sri Lanka is making it (almost) hassle-free for Western nomads to relocate.

You Earn Over $2,000 A Month? You’re In!

With a few caveats…

According to Sri Lanka’s own Department of Immigration and Emigration (Residence Visa Division), a Digital Nomad Visa category has been created to attract foreign nationals who wish to ‘live and work remotely from Sri Lanka while serving clients or companies based outside of the country’.

Before we discuss specificities, let’s get to the meat of it already.

In order to live in the sun-drenched country, you must satisfy the following list of requirements:

• Be a freelancer, own a business not registered in Sri Lanka, or be employed by a company based abroad
• Have a minimum monthly income of $2,000 USD*
• Take out health insurance covering the length of your stay
• Have a suitable accommodation for the duration of your stay (e.g. an Airbnb rental)
• Refrain from engaging in politics or disruptive activities while in the country**
• Provide proof of a clean criminal record from your home country

*If bringing family, or more than two dependents along, the amount increases by $500 per added person.

**Not sure about you, but you won’t catch me in the nearest Greta Thunberg rally anytime soon, so it sounds good enough to me.

The main thing here, other than proving to Sri Lankan authorities you’re of good character and not a public agitator, of course, is meeting the financial requirement of $2,000. Most nomads earn in USD cash in way more than that monthly, so that’s effectively a non-issue.

For comparison purposes, European DNVs, or even some Latin American ones expect nomads to provide proof of income of over $4,000–⁠$5,000, or even much-higher.

Other than the gruelling application process, that’s usually the main barrier for aspiring regular expats who aren’t tech moguls or social media giants.

Everything Else You Need To Know About The Visa

Based on what we know so far, anyway…

The visa is valid for 1 year initially, though it can be renewed annually for an unlimited number of years, provided the initial conditions for obtaining the visa are still met.

The procedure is quite straightforward, too:

• Fill out the visa application form
• Write a Request Letter
• Provide a photocopy of your passport (it must be valid for at least 6 months)*
• Two recent passport-sized pictures
• A Medical Clearance Report
• A Police Clearance Certificate (not older than 3 months)
• International Health Insurance that covers medical care in Sri Lanka
• Recommendation from the Ministry of Digital Economy*

*When bringing dependents, a marriage certificate for the spouse and birth certificates of the children are required

**This part is unclear, but we will know more details once the first applications are in. The system has been live for less than 2 days by now.

How To Apply For The Sri Lanka Digital Nomad Visa

Here’s how the process itself unravels:

• Submit the required documentation to the Department of Immigration and Emigration (Residence Visa Division)
• Wait for the documents to be evaluated for eligibility and compliance*
• Once approved, the visa endorsement will be issued on the applicant’s passport**

*Wait times have not been divulged.

**Sri Lankan authorities are yet to make clear whether this is a fully-online procedure, or whether contacting Sri Lankan missions abroad, and shipping your passport is required for issuing the visa.

As far as renewals go, they have revealed that, in order to be entertained for visa extensions, applicants must submit proof of Tax registration via the Inland Revenue Department. Yep, from my understanding of the official statement, you won’t be fully exempt from paying taxes while in the country.

Given that you must take out health insurance and fully support yourself and dependents, we’ll be assuming it’s not significant. More clarification is needed, and we’ll be sure to report back on it in due time once we know more.

What You Can And Can’t Do With This Visa

On the other hand, as a Sri Lankan DNV holder, you’re entitled to:

• You can stay in Sri Lanka while your visa is valid
• Open and maintain bank accounts in the country
• Enter into property rental or lease agreements
• Enroll your children in international / private schools
• Participate in co-working spaces, ICT programs, and tourism-related events organized by the government or private sector entities

At the same time, you are expressly prohibited from:

• Engaging in local employment within Sri Lanka
• Participating in political activities as a non-citizen

The statement also reads that changes in employment, income, or the status of dependents must be notified to the Department of Immigration and Emigration within 30 days.

Any violation of these conditions will result in the ‘immediate’ cancellation of the visa, and depending on the severity of the case, further legal action.

Why Choose Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is one of the most affordable countries to be based as a Digital Nomad:

As seen on Nomads.com, a crowd-sourced platform tracking digital nomad trends worldwide, monthly living costs average from a mere $663 to $1,304. That’s rent alone in your average mid-size U.S. or European city!

The Sri Lankan capital Colombo is likely where a majority of expats will be headed: it has the best infrastructure, country-wide connectivity, and English is more widely spoken thanks to its thriving global community.

Other promising hubs include Weligama, a beach town known for its laid-back atmosphere and golden-sand beaches, and Kandy, an equally gorgeous city that combines Buddhist heritage and coastal relaxation.

With its year-round warmer temps, laid-back culture, amazing food, and of course, easily-obtained expat visas that make it that much simpler for Americans to relocate, it’s hardly a shocker that Portugal is Europe’s top digital nomad country right now.

Croatia may have been the first EU nation to launch a Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), all the way back in the pandemic, and Albania may be the darling of bureaucracy-wary young entrepreneurs, but they were never a match for the Iberian gem.

At least that’s what a new research report concluded, with Portugal placed at the helm of Europe’s digital nomad scene—ahead even of community darling Spain.

Portugal’s Top 3 Digital Nomad Hubs

This is largely due to the near-perfect balance of accessibility and infrastructure it offers: its one-year, renewable DNV has an arguably fair application fee, and the monthly income requirement of €3,280 (roughly $3,879) can be met by a majority of nomads.

That’s not exactly news, as Portugal has been on the expat radar for some years now, but the one thing that sparked our interest in this study is the fact that they’ve namedropped not just Lisbon, but two other emerging Portuguese hubs that recent arrivals have been flocking to.

Of course, the City of Seven Hills is a guaranteed feature, but if you’re curious about the full podium, here’s the wider top three:

Funchal

Madeira Island

The capital of Madeira, a digital nomad paradise we were lucky enough to experience ourselves through the Nomad Island Fest a couple of years ago, Funchal is your go-to spot if you thrive in subtropical climates, and you don’t actually mind missing out on the passing of the seasons.

Madeira, its parent island, sits on the African tectonic plate, hundreds of miles away from the European mainland, and when it comes to temperatures, let’s just say it isn’t nicknamed ‘Land of Eternal Spring’ for nothing.

Funchal in particular boasts a yearly average high of 72°F, with temperatures seldom dipping below 68°F. On top of that, the sun shines gloriously for around 250 days a year.

Think sun-drenched calçadas, colorful street markets with a surprising variety of homegrown fresh fruit, and a long oceanside promenade licked by the azure waves of the Atlantic.

Those are all good-enough reasons for most nomads to pick Funchal, but then, the city’s also home to a thriving expat community, which makes integration and socializing as a newcomer easier, and its plethora of laptop-friendly cafés and affordable living are equally big draws.

Porto

The cultural heart of Northern Portugal, Porto is a vibrant hub distinguished by its landmark, double-deck iron bridge, used by both pedestrians and regular traffic, and historic bairros.

In Ribeira, the most traditional of Porto’s districts, you’ll find a maze of narrow, cobbled streets lined with colorful merchants’ houses dating back to the Middle Ages, and a number of Baroque, azulejo-clad churches with lavish interiors and gilded carvings.

Most of Porto’s tourism buzz takes place along the northern shore of the Douro River, including the stunning Romanesque Cathedral and the free-standing Clérigos Tower.

If you’re moving here, and you’re looking for some peace and quiet, within arm’s distance of the lively Old Town, but distant enough you can enjoy some wine and bifana at night without running into the usual British or German weekenders, try Vila Nova de Gaia:

Across the river from Ribeira, it’s where most locals themselves live, and it has a more lived-in feel, with quieter backstreets and authentic wine lodges.

Lisbon

Portugal’s undisputed Digital Nomad Capital, as well as its actual capital, Lisbon, has been the sweetheart of American expats for at least half a decade at this point.

Granted, the opening of the Lisbon housing market to expats and digital nomads has led to a sudden gentrification decried by natives themselves, and it’s no longer the super-welcoming, ‘come one, come all’ sanctuary it once was, but it still packs quite the punch.

You just can’t beat waking up early in the morning for a run along the Tagus riverfront, with views of the imposing Belém Tower in the distance.

As a follow-up, a quick stop at one of the many riverside bakeries for a sneaky pastel de nata, or then, working from a patio on one of Lisbon’s many miradouros, with views over its red-tiled roofs, pastel-colored buildings, and the imposing Moorish castle up the hill.

Prices are rising, sure, and you’d better ditch the awkward Spanish brush-ups and learn some proper Portuguese if you don’t want to feel completely ostracized by Lisboenses, but there’s no denying that pretty, sunny Lisbon is still a top choice for remote working.

Other Portuguese Cities For Your Consideration:

• Faro: the capital of the southern Algarve region, and a laid-back coastal city within short driving distance of beautiful golden-sand beaches
• Portimão: the ‘Miami of Portugal’, also in the Algarve, with high-rises lining a pristine beachfront and boasting a thriving social scene
• Coimbra: a historic university city in the north best known for its student life and youthful vibe—it’s also significantly cheaper than many of the mainline cities, with rent averaging $480–$750

Financial experts at Investopedia released an insightful guide on digital nomad visas with some golden nuggets remote workers may have missed out on.

Where In The World Is Montserrat?

If you haven’t heard of Montserrat, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s unlikely anyone on our team has had the pleasure of visiting despite our literal global footprint.

This tiny island, wrapped by Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts & Nevis, a cultural duo of lesser-known gems in their own right, is located in Montserrat in the open sea.

But hey, as isolated as it may be, some of us don’t always enjoy the social interactions of 9-to-5 work life.

Sometimes what may seem like a snoozefest to others is just what the doctor ordered for you — and if you’re anything like me, you don’t let societal norms dictate your every move.

Instead, you forge your own path, which is what’s so enticing about calling an unspoiled island home, even mainstream travelers would have trouble reeling off facts about.

A big question mark for digital nomads is the cost of living. That’s why anytime I see someone working on a laptop at a San Diego cafe where I live, I know they’re not living the nomad life.

Sometimes prices can be off-putting in low-ket destinations, which is why they never see the amount of tourists you would otherwise expect, but that can’t be said here.

It’s not St. Bart’s, but it’s not Punta Cana either. It’s a true ‘tweener.

According to Expatisan, furnished apartments can be found as low as $555 and as high as $1,480 if you opt for ritzy neighborhoods.

Internet (obviously a must) only runs you $44 per month, and a hearty local meal can be had under $10.

Obviously, it can get boring real quick watching reruns on Netflix at home, so you’ll likely find yourself at a cafe from time to time serving as your office.

There’s no better spot than Hilltop Coffee House — and it won’t remind you of Starbucks’ prices back home, nor will it.

Some digital nomads go to Spain for the warm weather, others choose to settle in Portugal, drawn to their slower-paced lifestyle, and there’s always the odd oenophile who can’t stay away from Italy for long—but there’s one particular category of expat that has their eyes set on Czechia.

A small European country best known for its picturesque capital, Prague, it is rapidly rising in popularity as an alternative to Europe’s usual nomad hotspots.

Interestingly enough, Czechia is a landlocked country hundreds of miles away from the highly sought-after Mediterranean, and it is known for having brutal winters. Still, it ranks 5th on this year’s Global Digital Nomad Report, with a score of 90.17 out of 100.

They definitely won’t find mild weather and beaches here, so what is it about Czechia that’s suddenly so appealing?

All The Cultural Appeal You Won’t Find Back Home

If you’ve ever dreamt of waking up every day to fresh coffee in your new favorite coffee shop overlooking a cobbled street, working from an ornate public library to the chimes of belfries in the distance, and living in a literal fairytale scene, Czechia’s definitely for you.

It is a country rich in history, from the capital city of Prague to the castle-dotted hills of South Bohemia, and every storybook village in between, and regardless of where you’re relocating to, you can rest assured you’ll find the Old World allure you seek.

Of course, Prague is the most obvious example, as it’s truly one of the most beautiful cities in the Old Continent, complete with historic bridges, soaring church spires, and a monumental castle, but don’t count these other ones out just yet:

At Least 5 Large Cities To Pick From

Prague may be the only metropolis in the truer sense of the word, but there are at least 5 Czech cities with over 100,000 inhabitants that are equally promising nomad hubs. Brno, the second-largest city with over 400,000 residents, boasts a lively café culture and a picture-perfect medieval center.

Plzeň (or Pilsen), is the Czech capital of beer and birthplace of the namesake beverage, but that’s not the only reason 187,000 people stay: it has a compact, largely-pedestrianized Old Town, a relaxed regional vibe, and only a small fraction of the tourists Prague gets.

The fourth largest city, Liberec, is a maze of postcard-ready streets lined with ornate Renaissance buildings, and rounding out the top five, Olomouc is a peaceful city characterized by its elegant squares, dominated by Baroque fountains, richly decorated churches, and charming cafés.

Quality Of Life Like Nowhere Else Can Offer

For the average American living out in their average U.S. midsize city, totally dependent on their car and used to long daily commutes, whether it’s driving to work, running errands, or heading downtown for a few beers with friends on the weekend, Czechia will feel like a breath of fresh air.

Picture walkable cities with a multitude of green spaces and lively commercial areas—none of the usual urban deserts associated with the suburbs—tramways that both run on time, and reach deep into the suburbs, and none of the usual traffic jams.

Other than being walkable, Czech cities are remarkably clean: air quality is good, visual pollution levels are low (forget the big billboards and flashing lights), and littering is minimal. Even after the odd wild weekend, you’re unlikely to wake up to a littered downtown in its aftermath.

It’s Affordable By European Standards

Affordability often plays a key part in a country’s popularity as a digital nomad haven, and let’s face it, who would go through the hassle of moving across the pond, with all the cultural challenges that that entails, only to be poorer by the end of it?

Thankfully for aspiring expats, Czechia is among the most affordable destinations in the European Union. Although prices can vary wildly between cities, and Prague is certainly on the pricier end, you can live a comfortable life earning approximately $3,000 monthly.

Again, if it’s Prague where you’re headed, expect to pay a lot more in rent: a one-bedroom flat in the city center averages $1,215. In a smaller city like Brno, however, you can get a much-larger apartment only a few steps from the main square from around $580-a-month.

Safe Streets

On top of being beautiful and affordable, Czechia stands shoulder to shoulder with countries like Poland, Croatia, and Estonia as one of Europe’s safest to live in. Yes, pickpocketing in urban centers are still an inconvenience, especially in the capital, but overall, crime rates are very low.

Czechia has largely thwarted the terrorism threat that’s been destabilizing the continent—since 2015, there have only been 2 terrorism-related arrests—and as far as immigration goes, the levels of irregular entrants is insignificant compared to France’s or Germany’s.

Whether you’re out pub-crawling in Prague on the weekend, using public transport alone as a woman, or walking home late at night from the gym, the risk of being mugged or assaulted is, for the best part, insignificant.

The Perfect Base For Exploring Europe

Last but not least, Czechia’s geographical location make it a prime destination for digital nomads keen on having a European base to, well, explore Europe. It’s right at the crossroads between East and West, and it is offers excellent transport links to all of its neighbors.

For instance, Dresden in Germany is a short 2–3 hour FlixBus ride from Prague, with tickets costing around $16 when booked in advance. In getting to Bratislava, the well-preserved medieval capital of Slovakia, it’s a 4–5 hour train, and roughly the same distance traveling to Vienna in Austria.

Naturally, if you’re traveling longer distances, that $20 Ryanair flight straight out of Prague Airport will still get you anywhere you need to be in the wider continent. The one true downside to Czechia is how brutally cold it can get in winter, but then again, a sun-drenched Malaga in Spain is a 3h20 flight away.

Just saying.

Joining in on a trend that seems to be taking the world by storm, Sri Lanka is the next country to tighten entry rules for Americans.

An island nation in South Asia, famous for its lush jungles, unspoiled coastline hugged by azure seas, and sprawling capital, Colombo, a vibrant melting pot of cultures with Indian, British, and Dutch influences, Sri Lanka has been rising in popularity among travelers.

However, if you’re a U.S. passport holder and you’re visiting from October 15, you will need to get a digital entry permit before you leave home; otherwise you won’t be allowed to board your flight, let alone enter Sri Lanka:

Understanding Sri Lanka’s Complex Visa Rules

Sri Lanka has never been exactly known for having an uncomplicated visa system. From e-Visas, to e-Visas On Arrival, to regular Consulate-issued visas, there were plenty of options at hand, yet somehow, that never made it easier for tourists planning visits.

Those flying to Sri Lanka had to keep up to date with regulation changes on a daily basis, and this year, not much has changed.

Although it was announced back in July that the Sri Lankan Government was, in fact, scrapping e-Visa fees for foreigners and making it less bureaucratic for them to travel to Sri Lanka, they now seem to be eyeing a complete 180.

Not only will the fee be maintained, at least for the time being, but starting this fall, Americans (and every other tourist, regardless of nationality) will no longer be eligible to fly to Sri Lanka without obtaining prior authorization.

Introducing The New Sri Lankan ETA

As confirmed by several Sri Lankan Embassies, including those in Paris, Jakarta, and Ankara, travelers heading to the South Asian nation must now apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) ahead of departure.

Though they are not described as such, ETAs are effectively digital visas: in countries that enforce them, and recent examples include the United Kingdom and Saint Kitts and Nevis, you’re not eligible to travel until you’ve got ‘ETA approved’.

Getting an ETA typically involves completing an online form, where you must answer a series of personal and security questions, upload a photo of your passport, and pay a fee. The fee varies wildly between countries, ranging from $21 in the U.K. to a more biting $68 in New Zealand.

Regarding Sri Lanka, despite their promise of a fee waiver, we’re still uncertain whether the new mandatory ETA will incur an additional cost. For the moment, it’s safe to assume it will.

At the moment, citizens of only 7 nations are exempt from paying a fee to enter Sri Lanka: China, India, Russia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan—as you can see, Americans are not part of the select group.

How To Get The Sri Lankan ETA

The new Sri Lankan ETA can be obtained via the official Sri Lankan ETA website, and right now, the fee is $50 for a double-entry permit. The process is the following:

• Access the official website at eta.gov.lk
• Complete the online form (this may include uploading a picture of your passport)
• Pay the $50 fee
• Wait for the confirmation email within a couple of minutes or hours.

Beside the ETA, your U.S. passport must have at least 6 months of validity left from your date of departure from Sri Lanka, and at least one full blank page for entry and exit stamps.

The Sri Lankan ETA is valid for 6 months from the date of issue, so you will have 180 days to enter the country after you’ve obtained it, and it allows you a stay of up to 30 days. If you plan on staying longer, you have the option to extend the visa through local immigration offices.

So far this year, Sri Lanka has hosted over 1.7 million tourists. In September alone, 150,000 foreign entrants were recorded.

This already marks the country’s best first semester in terms of tourist arrivals, and should the trend continue, it will potentially surpass 2018’s all-time high of 2.3 million in a year.

You’ve finally landed the remote job you’ve dreamed of. All documents are in order. Bags are packed and ready to go.

But, the question is “where to?”.

As we enter the final stages of 2025, so many countries across the globe have launched their own variations of digital nomad visas by now.

Some seem too good to be true, with an unbelievably low bar to obtain, and others have you scratching your head, wondering how on Earth people meet said requirements.

And then there’s another category of destinations that are downright surprising, offering visas to attract remote workers, seemingly welcoming them with open arms despite government-backed campaigns to deter tourists from visiting.

That’s the case for one of Europe’s most iconic countries that we at Travel Off Path have covered too many times to count in terms of overtourism concerns, yet an insightful new report from the Global Intelligence Unit just featured it as the #2 spot in the world for digital nomads.

Are Digital Nomads Welcome In The Netherlands?

Where does the Netherlands stand in terms of tourism in general right now? The last time we checked, they were essentially pulling the welcome mat out from tourists’ feet.

Whether any particular visitor was “up to no good” in Amsterdam’s famous pockets of dark tourism, or if they’re your typical run-of-the-mill tourist enjoying more palatable delights of one of Europe’s prettiest cities, seemed pre-determined by the government with a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

As recently as early summer, well-respected Fodor’s was still reporting how locals are fed up with tourists in The Netherlands (mainly Amsterdam) hence we have tried to dig up the best alternatives for you, such as canal-lined Rotterdam and Dordrecht.

So, is there a difference between digital nomads and tourists in the eyes of locals?

Well, if they’re aligned with Mexico City residents, the answer would be no, which is why the Netherlands being crowned 2nd best in the world was quite a shocker.

Given how tourists may be in town as short as a weekend getaway compared to digital nomads paying rent each month, let’s look into the benefits of making your base in the Netherlands.

The downside is certainly Amsterdam’s unwelcoming “Karens”, at least from the outside looking in…

The Netherlands’ “Self-Employed Residence Permit”

Who knew the Netherlands even had its take on a digital nomad visa?

Described as “gross profit per month (with holiday allowance)” this permit only requires a minimum monthly income of $2011 as of today, meaning it’s actually remarkably easy to obtain from that standpoint.

Though business plan submissions can be a hassle, they’re not as much of a headache as they can be to maintain a decent quality of life if you’re scraping by on roughly $2000 per month.

As the same report implies, the cost of living here is high, especially if you’re dead set on Amsterdam.

Other lesser-known cities, arguably just as pretty and far less crowded, like Haarlem, Utrecht, and Leiden, are all built along scenic canals with vibrant storefronts and welcoming cafes — and we all know cafe culture is a staple across the nation.

Known as the “Self Employed Residence Permit”, once granted, nomads can stay here up to 2 years and can be used as a gateway to permanent residency if that’s your end goal.

Online application fees total approximately $480 for first-time applicants and your job must pass a 3-step ‘points test‘ if you’re not an American, Japanese, or Bolivian citizen.

To sum up the benefits of this permit, you’re applying to a country highlighted by these features:

• Largely proficient in English
• Clear-cut instructions to obtain ‘permit’
• Low income requirement
• Popular café culture
• 2-year validity (with possible extensions)
• Zippy internet speeds
• High quality of life
• Growing startup scene
• Bicycle friendly everywhere (save Uber money!)

There’s also the option of DAFT (Dutch-American Friendship Treaty), catered toward U.S. citizens who prefer opening a business in the Netherlands.

It does come with a hefty $5335 investment requirement, but more flexible terms with stays up to 5 years.

Top 5 Dutch Cities For Nomads

If you’re willing to risk irritable locals not approving your presence, and you have deeper pockets than $2011 per month, Amsterdam is certainly a top choice.

Lined with trendy cafes perfect to use as your office, ample co-working spaces, safe cycling routes, and no shortage of vibrant parks and world-class museums, this iconic city undoubtedly lives up to the hype.
