Querétaro Intercontinental Airport (QRO)

This is usually the closest and most convenient option

Bajío International Airport (BJX)

• Distance: 70 miles
• Drive time: 1h30

This one often has more flight options especially international connections

Mexico City International Airport (MEX)

• Distance: 170 miles
• Drivel time: roughly 4 hours (it can be longer with traffic)

Not exactly in the vicinity, but a last-ditch option if you can’t route through Querétaro or León.

Transnistria

Ever heard of the country that doesn’t exist? Not on any map, anyway.

Moldova’s that obscure speck wedged between Romania and Ukraine—even hardcore travelers barely notice it. But squint at the eastern edge, past the dotted line hugging Ukraine, and you’ll find Transnistria. Moldova’s rogue breakaway strip, still drunk on Soviet nostalgia and glued to Russia.

No joke. In many ways, visiting Transnistria feels like traveling back in time some 30 years, to an era of Lenin statues, Ladas, and hammer-and-sickle emblems.

I mean, if the red marshrutkas that seem to be on their very last legs, yet still carry babushkas from the Sunday farmer’s market back to their communist apartment block on the edge of town, are any indication, Transnistria screams USSR more than the Russian motherland ever did.

The coolest part? As a Westerner, you don’t need to apply for one of those hard-to-get, bureaucratic Russian-visas to enter:

There is indeed a heavily-guarded border between Moldova and Transnistria, but all foreign tourists are welcome to visit. Yes, even Americans.

The ‘country’ also has its own currency, a (Russia-backed) army, and they issue their own passports, though Transnistrians might struggle traveling abroad without a Moldova-issued document. Again, it’s not like Transnistria has a seat at the UN.

Nicosia, Cyprus

Speaking of breakaway states, did you know Nicosia—Cyprus’ inland capital on that hotshot Med island—is sliced clean between two countries? Well, one desperately wishes it’d be recognized as one.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the leftover scar from a 1974 Turkish invasion that flipped Cyprus’ map upside down. Turkish tropps grabbed the northern third, and it’s been their turf ever since, despite ongoing calls for reunification.

Since then, a barricaded Green Line cleaves Nicosia in half, backed by a UN buffer zone crawling with peacekeepers and watchtowers on both sides.

I was only born in 1997, so I never got to see Wall-era Berlin, but Nicosia feels like the next best thing: streets with shops and cafés that dead-end into border checkpoints, terraces hugging barbed-wired walls, and blindfolded backstreets.

Greek side? Euro prices, blue-and-white-striped flags waving atop Orthodox churches, and tavernas slinging souvlaki and moussaka. Pure Hellenic pride.

Turkish side? Minarets blaring the call to prayer from dusk to dawn, bazaars hawking trinkets near medieval caravanserais, and kebabs going for 200 lira in old market squares.

Crossing from the Greek to the Turkish side of the city is permitted, but you’ll need to carry your passport. Oh, and if you want to be admitted in the Greek side, you’ll want to make sure you’ve landed first on a Cypriot-controlled airport (either Larnaca or Paphos Airports).

Baarle-Hertog, Belgium

…or is it the Netherlands?

Perhaps the craziest place you’ll ever set foot in—trust me, I was still processing it even after I’d left—Baarle-Hertog doesn’t need geopolitical crises or a bloody war record to be absolutely unhinged.

Though it sits in one of the most peaceful, nondescript corners of Western Europe, it’s possibly the continent’s weirdest border glitch. If you think Nicosia being split in two is wild, wait until you see this:

Baarle-Hertog is a fully Belgian town surrounded by the Dutch town of Baarle-Nassau, except it has tiny pieces of the Netherlands inside it, and inside those tiny Dutch dots, you have even-tinier Belgian enclaves, some of which contain microscopic Dutch counter‑enclaves.

A country within a country within a country within a country.

How does this work, you ask? Some of the “borders” literally run through cafés, shops, streets, and right down the middle of detached houses. You could go to sleep in your bedroom on the Belgian side of the house, then shuffle into the kitchen for breakfast the next morning in the Netherlands.

Like so much in Europe, the whole cartographic mess dates back to the Middle Ages, when local lords and dukes swapped, sold, or inherited random plots of land.

Some parcels ended up under the Duke of Brabant (later part of Belgium), others under the Lord of Breda (in today’s Netherlands).

When nation-states eventually solidified, those patchwork estates hardened into international borders and, for whatever reason, nobody ever bothered to untangle them. Make it make sense, because I couldn’t.

Baarle-Hertog is basically an archipelago of 22 “islands” inside the Netherlands, and within those, there are at least 7 “main” Dutch islands. Good thing we now have the Schengen Area, because I can’t imagine the absolute nightmare of going through a string of passport checks on your morning grocery run.

Ceuta, Spain

You’ve not even seen peak geographical anomaly yet. What if I told you Spain has a whole city, with over 83,000 residents, right on the coast of Africa?

Ceuta literally shares a land border with Morocco, one that’s heavily fortified by razor-wire fences, day-and-night patrols, and buffer zones, and despite being firmly planted in African soil, it’s every bit a part of Spain as Madrid or Barcelona.

Ceuta’s been Spanish since 1668, even though it’s cut off from the mainland by the Strait of Gibraltar.

Having road-tripped Morocco for over a month before crossing into Ceuta, I’ll never forget walking straight from Africa into “Europe”, and instantly seeing Spanish flags, tapas bars, and Christian chapels everywhere.

Ceuta looks like any Spanish town:

It has that typically-Spanish main plaza, dominated by a yellow-washed Sanctuary of Saint Mary of Africa, a coastal fortress ringed by a turquoise moat, and palm-shaded squares where abuelos gather to play dominoes.

But that Saharan heat hits hard, and Maghrebi vibes are everywhere, from crumbling medieval Arab bath ruins to hole-in-the-wall tajine spots slinging steaming harira. A slice of Spain in Africa, a dash of Africa in Spain: a happy marriage you’ll be glad survived into the modern day.

That was number four, but we’re not finished yet.

The Absolute Maddest European Destination Out There

The Bonus European Anomaly:

Athos, Greece

I’m sure you’ve heard of the Vatican, an autonomous city-state enclaved in the heart of Rome, headquarters of the Catholic Church, but what about its Orthodox counterpart Athos in Greece?

Not a mere square, but a whole peninsula, Athos is a monastic territory whose autonomy and right to self-governance is enshrined in the Greek Constitution, despite its rather… hem… unorthodox practices, at least for these modern, liberal times.

You see, Athos is nothing short of a beautiful, mystical land with ancient, fortress-like Byzantine monasteries bestriding lush coastal hills, remote villages living off of homemade bread and wine and faith alone, and hermit caves where pious souls live completely unaware of worldly matters.

There’s just one caveat.

Well, two.

1. Women are not allowed anywhere near Athos
2. Men who visit must first get a ‘visa’

The prohibition of females is enshrined in Greek law, so to protect the monastic character of Athos and its religious communities. There’s no way to skirt around it.

As a woman, the closest you can get to the territory is Ouranoupoli, a ‘border’ town at the entrance of the peninsula.

As for the man who wish to enter, the ‘visa’ you want to get is a Diamonitirion.

It’s usually issued at the Pilgrims’ Office in Ouranapoli, and it’s usually valid for 4 days. Applications must be made months in advance, as there’s a limit on the number of visitors allowed on the peninsula per day, and the visa costs €25–35.

The shocking part? No, Athos is not a country, and it has no international recognition beyond Greece. However, Greece does officially recognize it as an autonomous monastic territory, giving it special status.

When you think of Greek islands, the first image your brain conjures is probably Santorini’s blue church domes and caldera views, or maybe Mykonos’ iconic string of windmills on a hill and colorful harborside houses.

The powerhouse duo may be Greece’s top two most popular destinations, but if you’re asking us, they’re far from being the most rewarding, especially when it comes to beaches.

Between Santorini’s rugged volcanic coast, largely made up of craggy descents and pebbly stretches, and Mykonos’ windswept, club-heavy shorelines, they’re not somewhere you go for swimming and lounging by the sea, necessarily.

Is Kefalonia The Best Island In Greece For Beaches?

Located on the Ionian side of Greece—the side that faces Italy—Kefalonia is an island paradise best known for its indented coastline, interspersed with cliff-backed bays, limestone sea walls, and short strips of mixed white pebble and sand.

Fteri Beach, one of these hard-to-access, small pebbly coves backed by towering cliffs, was just ranked the second best beach in the world by the experts behind World’s 50 Best Beaches, closely behind Sardinia‘s Cala Goloritzé.

In Greece, it beats out other heavyweights like Voutoumi, Porto Katsiki, and even Crete’s iconic Elafonissi Beach, which chart at Nos. 3, 5, and 15, respectively.

At this point, you’re probably wondering why this beach is so special. Well, other than the powdery white sands and crystalline seas, of course, its challenging access is key to understanding its appeal with beachgoers.

How To Get To Fteri Beach On Kefalonia

You can only get there hiking down from the small village of Zola, on the northwest coast, and that takes about 40 minutes, or by taking a water taxi. If you’re walking, sneakers are highly recommended as the route can get a little rough in parts, and you’ll need good shoes to walk across Fteri’s white pebbles.

Naturally, taking the taxi is a lot faster and more convenient: a 5–10 minute glide from the harbor to the beach.

There’s a Fteri Water Taxi running from Zola Harbor in the high season, offering pickups and drop-offs at Fteri, and even other nearby beaches like Amidi and Kamari.

According to travelers who have been, the best time to visit is the morning, before the taxi boats arrive, as the beach is usually nearly empty.

Once the taxis are operational, they start dropping people off every 30 minutes (or more frequently, even).

As for the water, they have that pool-like translucent shade closer to shore, that gradually turns that gorgeous gatorade-blue so typical of the Ionian Sea.

Oh, a piece of advice? Kefalonia is a proper wild beach, with no amenities like on many of Kefalonia’s mainline beaches, so make sure you bring your own sunscreen, bottle of water, snacks, and beach attire, as you won’t be able to purchase them from a kiosk.

Kefalonia Is Full Of Turquoise-Water Bays

Fteri Beach may be the star of the show today, but it’s far from being Kefalonia’s only paradisiacal cove with surreal waters.

In fact, the most popular beach on the island is Myrtos, similar to Fteri in many ways, except it’s far easier to drive to with a car. White pebbles, neon-blue seas, and imposing cliffs.

Petani is the family-friendly, amenity-packed alternative: you park at the top of the cliffs, then you walk the short way down. It has sunbeds and umbrellas to rent, and a couple of beach bars and restaurants nearby.

You’ve probably heard of Crete’s pinkish Elafonissi Beach, but did you have any idea Kefalonia hosts its very own red-sanded strip?

With soft, clay-like sands, Xi Beach straddles the southern coast of the island, in the Paliki peninsula, and it has a full setup of sunbed rentals, seasonal cafés, and water sports. It gets busier than most, sure, but the deep-ocher sands and the azure waters are unique in Greece.

Where To Stay On Kefalonia

If you’re looking for a place to stay, Argostoli, the quaint Kefalonian capital nestled on a coastal hill overlooking the Ionian Sea, is probably your top pick.

A lively harbor town, it’s filled with shops, restaurants, and even the nightlife isn’t all that bad, thanks to a bar-lined central promenade, easy to walk to at night for after-dinner drinks.

For a quieter island experience and easier access to Paliki peninsula beaches (like Xi), Lixouri is a popular alternative.

Kefalonia’s second-largest settlement, it’s still big and well-equipped for tourism, yet serene enough to feel worlds away from the main hub.

A short ferry hop away from the gorgeous Melissani Cave, one of Kefalonia’s top natural wonders, Sami is a great base for exploring, and of course, if your primary goal is to be a short 5 min water taxi ride from the dreamy Fteri Beach, Zola is where you should crash for the long weekend.

This spring, you can find accommodation on Kefalonia Island from as cheap as $46-a-night, though a modest hotel room in one of the main towns would average $65–$90.

It’s no wonder it’s already been announced as a European Capital of Culture for the year 2030, and as such, we’re inclined to agree with our EBD friends when they claim an under-the-radar Leuven is ‘where Europe’s future of culture begins’.

To the beer buffs out there, don’t miss out on a visit to the Den Hoorn brewery, established all the way back in 1366—man, you gotta love Europe—and the proud father of Stella Artois.

Yep, your favorite import lager originally hails from this unassuming town, a short 13-min train ride from Brussels Airport.

Some clichés are indeed worth all the hype, and in classic Billy Joel fashion, ‘Vienna waits for you…‘

There’s plenty in Vienna to keep the culture aficionado in you busy for days, from the verdant gardens of Schönbrunn Palace to the art-filled galleries of Kunsthistorisches Museum, but we’d say no visit to the Austrian capital is complete without a stop at the Austrian National Library.

Nothing short of Beauty and the Beast material, this majestic display of centuries-old, leather-bound books, gilded columns, and giant-sized 17th-century planetary globes, all under richly frescoed domed ceilings, is European opulence at its finest.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves: as EBD put it, Vienna is ‘elegance in motion’.

Oh, and by the way, if you wouldn’t mind checking off yet another European capital that just happens to be a 50 min train ride from Vienna Central Station, taking a half-day trip to the charming Bratislava, over in Slovakia, just couldn’t be easier.

Naturally, there’s plenty of jaw-dropping beauty to be soaked up here, and trust us when we say, you risk suffering from neck pain from looking up all the time.

Getting lost in Florence’s maze-like center is the best way to stumble on all that the city has to offer, but if you’re ever in need of a Northern Star, keep your eyes peeled for the impossible-to-miss Brunelleschi-designed red dome.

The main feature of Florence Cathedral is that it rises 114.5 meters above the maze of skinny, ocher-colored townhouses and winding alleys that is Florence, and alongside a free-standing bell tower and a marble-clad baptistery, it’s the city’s undisputed magnum opus.

Cyprus is one of the trendiest European destinations right now, so you should definitely read further if the idea of Nicosia ranking higher than Florence or Vienna sounds a tad too outlandish for you.

No, it doesn’t have the former’s jaw-dropping architectural masterpieces, nor the latter’s soaring Gothic spires, but there’s something about its Venetian fortifications, sun-drenched, banner-lined streets, and unusual mash-up of Greek and Turkish flavors that makes it feel like the real deal.

After years of back and forth, false deadlines, and rampant misinformation, this time it’s official: the European Commission has struck the hammer and confirmed 2026 is the year the controversial ETIAS launches.

If you haven’t been following the complex European bureaucracy or you’re not a Travel Off Path reader, you might have missed a massive shift… Europe is planning a major overhaul of its border system.

One that will include making Americans pay for a permit before traveling. From 2026, the dreaded moment will finally materialize, and if you’re flying across the pond in the coming year, you’d better come prepared:

What Does ETIAS Even Mean?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System, and in practice, it’s a digital visa that will soon be required of all current visa-exempt travelers entering Europe as tourists.

This includes Americans, but before you feel personally attacked, it also applies to over 60 other nationalities: Canadians, Brits, Australians, Kiwis, Mexicans, and many more.

That’s the sum of it, but it gets slightly more complicated as we get into the technicalities. Obviously, Europe is a big continent, and not all European countries will be imposing ETIAS on visitors (but more on that further down).

Those that will, however, are formally part of the Schengen Area. If you’re not a frequent traveler, and you have no idea what Schengen even means, it’s a 29-country customs union, where passport checks do not apply for the purposes of cross-border travel.

Sounds complicated enough, we know, but it basically means that, if you fly from the U.S. to France, you’ll undergo a passport check.

On the other hand, taking a train from France to Belgium, or France to the Netherlands, or France ot Italy, is as smooth as crossing the state border from California to Arizona.

Sounds awesome, until you get down to the nitty-gritty of it: yes, you can travel hassle-free across a whopping 29 countries once you’re inside Schengen, as all travelers are treated as domestic arrivals, but the downside is, you only get 90 days to do it.

That’s where ETIAS comes into play:

How Does Schengen Work?

According to Schengen Area rules, U.S. passport holders may be present in the Schengen Area for no more than 90 days within any 180-day period. In short, if you’ve spent a whole month traveling across France alone, you only have 60 days left to explore the 28 other countries.

If you use up the 90 days all at once, you must then wait 90 days outside of Schengen in order to be readmitted.

Up until this year, keeping tabs on their Schengen days and how much time they had left was the only concern for American tourists in Europe. Starting in 2026, they will have the additional bureaucratic hurdle of an ETIAS request.

Fingerprinting upon arrival is also in order, but we digress.

Once the new system is implemented, unless you hold a valid ETIAS, you won’t even be able to board your flight to Europe. So how will it work in practice?

How Does An ETIAS Application Work

We’ve covered the ETIAS launch at length here, but if you’re wondering how exactly you can get one, you can rest assured it’s far easier than a regular visa, and it won’t involve commutes to the nearest Consulate, nor attending in-person interviews.

For most people.

If you’re of good character, have no criminal record back home, and have never once overstayed your welcome in Europe (remember the 90-day rule?), you can apply for your travel permit from the comfort of your home.

ETIAS applications will be processed online, and it will involve:

• Creating an account on the official ETIAS platform (yet to be launched)
• Filling out an application form
• Uploading your passport photo and personal information
• Answer a series of security questions pertaining to your purpose of travel
• Pay for the ETIAS fee, currently set at €20 (While initially proposed at €7, the fee has been officially set at €20 as of late 2025 to cover rising operational costs.)

Most ETIAS requests will be processed within minutes, especially if you’re a low-risk American traveler with no previous history of breach of immigration rules or serious offenses. Some applications will be processed manually, and take longer to get approved.

That’s why we advise you that, once the system launches, you don’t leave it until the very last minute to submit your ETIAS application. Approval can be issued within seconds straight to your email, or take up to 30 days, if additional information and documents are required.

The ETIAS platform is not yet launched, so beware of online scammers offering ETIAS advice and application support. We will let you know exactly when it launches, sometime in the last quarter of 2026. That’s the estimated deadline, as an official date has not yet been confirmed.

Which Countries Will Require ETIAS?

An ETIAS will be valid for up to 3 years from the date of issuance, or until your current passport expires, if it’s due to run out sooner. It will enable you to continue to travel to the Schengen Area for 90 days (within a 180-day period) once the border changes are enacted.

Which Countries Will Not Require ETIAS

All countries that are not in the Schengen Area, nor legally obligated to join the Schengen Area in the near future, are not affected by the changes. American tourists are still welcome under the current visa rules, which typically mean stays of up to 90 days in each individual country, except where noted:

Notes:

• Andorra is not part of the Schengen Area and has kept a hard border with Spain, but as there is no way to get to Andorra without first flying to Spain, an ETIAS or valid multi-entry Schengen Visa, for non-ETIAS eligible travelers, will be required.
• San Marino and Vatican City are not formally part of the Schengen Area, but they are surrounded by Italy, which is a Schengen state, and do not maintain an active border. For that reason, if you’re heading to these micro-states, you will still need an ETIAS as the only way to reach them is transiting through Italy.
• The United Kingdom has its own Entry Travel Authorization system in place, dubbed the UK ETA, which is separate from the ETIAS. Americans must first apply for a UK ETA in order to travel to the United Kingdom. If they’re UK ETA holders, they can stay for up to 180 days at a time as tourists.

Why This List Might Look A Little Different In A Couple Of Years

As more countries gear up to join the European Union and subsequently its Schengen Area in the future, you should expect the list to change over the years.

Cyprus, which has been an EU member state since 2004 but has lain outside of Schengen, is finally expected to ascend to the border-free area in 2026. Naturally, it will start enforcing ETIAS rules once it’s officially in Schengen.

Additionally, EU candidate state Montenegro is aiming to join the bloc soon, and others like Albania and North Macedonia are expecting to ascend within the next few years.

In Montenegro’s case, should negotiations prove successful (and lately they’ve been accelerated), Americans will also need to obtain the ETIAS permit if they wish to visit Montenegro as of 2027.

Is The U.S. Passport Becoming Weaker In 2026?

In short, yes, unfortunately.

It’s a rapidly changing world, and if you think complex border rules were a thing of the past as much as COVID, you’re in for a big surprise.

Between new visa requirements, Entry Travel Authorizations, and mandatory forms, international travel is becoming just a tad bit more complex as we enter 2026. It sure doesn’t help that, as of the latest visa switch-ups, the U.S. passport keeps getting weaker.

These Are The Top 5 Safest Countries In Europe

According to the latest HelloSafe Safety Index, these 5 European countries offer the least danger to visitors (and locals alike).

They boast robust public safety and low crime, two factors they deem as the ‘foundation’ of physical security, political and social stability (something countries like France and Italy can only aspire to), health and healthcare security, digital safety, and natural risk management.

They are:

But what exactly makes these European states so safe, and how have they managed to keep crime levels lower than average when much of the continent keeps seeing worsening trends? Let’s start with Denmark:

Denmark

Safety Index: 89.95

Other than boasting a high-trust society, effective policing, and low levels of corruption, security experts have pointed to Denmark’s immigration policy as the primary reason for the country’s higher levels of safety, especially compared to neighboring Sweden.

Despite being led by a left-leaning government, Denmark has enacted a series of measures to discourage illegal entrants, including actively fighting the formation of ‘ghettos’, tightening rules for asylum claims, and repatriating foreign criminals.

Religious extremism remains a concern nationwide, and that’s why the U.S. Government has yet to place Denmark at the desired Level 1 in its Travel Advisory, but the good news is Americans are not exactly discouraged from traveling there. They must simply beware of potential terror threats.

Finland

Safety Index: 90.6

Despite being neighbors with Russia, a country waging war against a close ally of the Western World, Finland is one of the most stable states in the region: though it’s not immune to Russian provocations, it’s managed to steer clear of direct involvement in the conflict so far, and national security remains tight.

On the public safety front, violent crime and other forms of petty crime, such as theft and burglary, are extremely rare, even in large urban centers like Helsinki and Tampere, and most cities are clean and well-lit during winter and benefit from effective policing.

Even more so than Denmark, the concept of a high-trust society here applies to the letter: people trust each other and institutions, kids walk to school alone, lost wallets are usually returned with any money and credit cards left as they were, and good faith is just part of daily life.

Safety Index: 90.85

Consistently ranked one of the world’s most peaceful states, Norway is known for its majestic nature, rich Nordic heritage, and of course, enviable levels of public safety and political stability—attributes most of Europe can only aspire to.

Unlike neighboring Sweden, where gun crime increased significantly in recent years, Norway remains largely unaffected by the security concerns seen elsewhere in the Scandinavian Peninsula, and in fact, statistics for most crimes remain ‘low’, as seen on Numbeo.

Be it in the lively capital city of Oslo, the up-and-coming Bergen, out in the Western Fjords, or in any quaint settlement tucked away in some lush Norwegian forest, your risk of being mugged, falling victim to a burglary, or other acts of violence is negligible.

Neutral as countries can be, and proudly so, Switzerland is an oasis in the heart of Europe that continues to boast impressive levels of safety, despite being surrounded by nations that have let the ball drop: we’re talking France, Germany, Italy, and to a certain extent, even Austria.

In this new study, it ranks at number 2 for safest in both Europe and the world, in alignment with the official U.S. travel advice, which considers it a ‘low-risk’ destination for Americans, and the reasons why are pretty straightforward and well-documented:

Most residents have good incomes, thus there are fewer crime incentives. The police are highly professional and able to quash threats as they arise. The decentralized government helps communities tackle regional issues upfront. Plus, it has stricter immigration and residency rules compared to its counterparts.

Iceland

Safety Index: 92.4

Any country that leaves its babies out to take a nap on the curbside unsupervised is mostly made up of sparsely populated wild territory, and where the capacity of the prison system stands at 160, because the demand just isn’t there, is bound to take the number one spot.

Iceland is Europe’s safest country by a long mile, as well as the world’s most secure state. Having been to Reykjavik ourselves, multiple times, we can vouch for the Icelandic capital’s impressive state of peace, and they don’t even need police doing the rounds to keep it that way:

The overwhelming majority of Iceland’s residents are law-abiding citizens, malfeasance is extremely uncommon, and strongly frowned upon, be it in personal relations or at the Government level, and overall, Iceland is too remote, too pacate, too small a nation (population-wise) to garner any bad actors.

When you think of Europe, chances are it’s Paris and its iconic Eiffel Tower that pop to mind, or perhaps London and the iconic red telephone boxes, or perhaps, if you’ve taken a liking for going off the beaten path a little, Croatia and its postcard-ready pebbly beaches straddling the Adriatic.

That’s the Old Continent for beginners.

Now, if you’re fascinated by the other side of the moon, where Haussmann boulevards give way to imposing communist-era concrete giants, and it’s not a glossy Eurostar that will get you where you need to be, but a 1990s marshrutka, the little-known Moldova is all the riotous fun you’ve been craving.

You’d better get there quickly, though: it may have been infamously considered Europe’s least-visited country at one point, but it’s now one of its fastest-growing destinations.

Moldova Is Europe’s 3rd Fastest-Rising Destination Right Now

According to the World Tourism Organization, Moldova is now the third-best-performing European country in tourism. To be more precise, during the first half of 2025, it saw a whopping 62 percent increase in the number of international visitors compared to 2019.

It officially surpasses far more well-established destinations in the continent, most notably the Mediterranean nation of Malta, which ranks just beneath it at number 4, with a 49% rise in visitors since the pre-pandemic era, and Greece, at number 10, with an even more modest 24% increase.

Only Uzbekistan, which is variously described as partially-European and Central Asian, and Albania chart higher than Moldova, with upticks of 73% and 122%, respectively.

Contrary to some of these competitors, however, Moldova has no beaches; it’s not particularly known for permanently snow-capped highlands that would draw winter sports enthusiasts; and it’s not exactly the easiest place to fly into—especially if you’re coming all the way from America.

So what’s the big deal here?

What Have Been Tourists Sleeping On All Along?

As we briefly touched on, Moldova’s main appeal is its off-the-beaten-path, rough-around-the-edges character.

It is distinguished for being one of Europe’s least visited countries, but that’s largely thanks to suboptimal promotion rather than any inherent qualities.

From the wetlands and rolling vineyards of Southern Moldova, to the capital city of Chișinău, with its thriving social scene, modernist architecture, and lush urban parks, to the underrated North, home to the fairytale castle town of Soroca, it is a boundless treasure trove begging to be unearthed.

The best part? It’s oddly quiet still. Despite the big rise in visitors, Moldova had only about 400,000 guests sojourn in Moldovan hotels and guesthouses this year, 212,200 of which were foreigners.

Whether you’re strolling Ștefan cel Mare Park in the capital, with its tree-lined alleys and fountain-dominated squares, or exploring infinite tunnels stacked from floor to ceiling with wine bottles, extending for a whopping 125 miles in the world’s largest wine cellar, big crowds are not a concern here.

Who Would Have Thought Moldova Would Be So Affordable?

Speaking of the world’s largest wine cellar, that’s Mileștii Mici for you, a short 27-minute drive outside Chișinău. Wine tastings and tours start from around $90, and it’s a must-do for oenophiles.

Moldova is a bitterly cold country to visit in winter if you’re feeling the pull right now, so bear in mind visiting these historic, Soviet-era wine cellars—Mileștii Mici is one of several scattered around the country—is truly your best bet at keeping warm (and that’s no small potatoes).

Now that we brought up potatoes, it’s probably a good time to mention that Moldova’s potato-heavy food can be sampled for as cheap as your mildly generous restaurant tip back home.

A flavorful mix of Romanian and Russian culinary traditions, it includes hearty chicken soups with lots of dill (zeamă), the undisputably Balkan mămăligă (their version of polenta, usually served with cheese and sour cream), and, of course, plenty of roasted pork and lamb.

On average, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant in the Moldovan capital will set you back by $8.77, or the equivalent in Moldovan leu (the local currency).

If you’re planning to splurge a little, taking into account this is one of Europe’s most budget-friendly destinations.

So… On The Transnistria ‘Issue’

Then of course, there’s Transnistria, or how TikTokers love to call it, ‘The Country That Doesn’t Exist‘.

It does exist, de facto, except it’s not recognized by any UN member state. We guess they’re North Cyprus’s spiritual sibling.

To the rest of the world, they’re simply a breakaway province of Moldova currently under Russian occupation, though within the boundaries of Transnistria, they hold their own elections (sort of), have their own currency, and even issue their own passports (though we doubt these are of any use outside Transnistria or Russia).

The self-proclaimed capital, Tiraspol is one of the last surviving Soviet microcosms, with Lenin statues galore, grand boulevards flanked by Stalinist edifices, and urban infrastructure that’s essentially frozen in time, back in the (arguably) glorious days of the USSR.

There is a hard border in place, with passport checks and all, but you can easily visit Transnistria from Chișinău, though the U.S. Government doesn’t advise it. It’s all but an extension of Russia, remember?

If you do decide to go—and we must add most foreigners, including Americans, face no issues—you’re on your own. Should things go awry at the border, or you find yourself in trouble by crossing an invisible line into a no-go zone in Tiraspol, you’re on your own.

How To Get To Moldova

The easiest way to get to Moldova is by flying, usually into Eugen Doga International Airport (RMO), which serves the capital city.

It’s a focus hub for many European low-cost carriers, like FlyOne, HiSky, and WizzAir, so you know the drill at this point: no Transatlantic flights don’t mean you can’t get there hassle-free, it just means you’ll need to add a little stopover first in a mainline European airport.

If you’re coming straight from America, some options are Frankfurt (FRA), Vienna (VIE), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), and, more recently, Bucharest-Otopeni (OTP), in neighboring Romania, which started hosting U.S. flights as of this year.

Wanna keep the Soviet vibes going? You may alternatively hop on an overnight train from Bucharest to Chișinău, in a communist-era train that’s hardly seen any major upgrades in the past 20 years. It’s not the most comfortable of journeys, but as the kids say it these days, you can ‘do it for plot’.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

Tucked away in the rolling green hills of Bavaria, in southern Germany, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the kind of place that’s the spitting image of a town you thought could only exist in your most fantastical Disney-coded childhood dreams.

No two ways about it: it’s straight out of a fairy tale. The winding stone roads are flanked by colorful toy-like dwellings, old houses with timbered tops, and soaring churches everywhere you look. Rothenburg is a German national artifact in life-sized form.

On top of that, it’s one of a handful of towns completely untouched by far. That’s what makes it so inherently special: it is still completely surrounded by original, intact walls, watchtowers, and drawbridges leading to imposing gates.

Erice, Italy

Considered the best-preserved medieval town in Sicily, Erice is perched on a prominent mountain overlooking the island’s lush countryside, and the shimmery Mediterranean beyond, at 2,500 feet above sea level.

It’s criss-crossed by winding stone-paved lanes, and peppered with traditional, family-owned eateries, and quiet, unassuming Romanesque churches with opulent Baroque interiors. The standout among those, Chiesa di San Martino features stunning stuccowork and colorful frescoes.

The absolute must-see in town, however, is the Castle of Venus, an ancient fortress built over the ruins of a Pagan temple dedicated to the Roman goddess. If you’re hoping for those epic blood-orange sunset views, this is the spot to catch them.

Pedraza, Spain

With a population of only 359 people, and a limited number of tourists, Pedraza is one of the most quaint spots in Spain, which has been engulfed by overtourism in recent years. That being said, it probably won’t take long for the masses to discover it:

A picture-perfect village a short 25 minutes by train from the bustling Madrid, it is known for its intact medieval townscape: imagine impressive walls, cobblestone lanes lined with old stone houses, and arcaded buildings ringing a stately Plaza Mayor.

In summer, it also hosts the Night of the Candles (La Noche de las Velas), when the entire settlement’s electric lights are turned off, and thousands of candles are lit instead, casting a golden glow on the centuries-old façades. Atmospheric and whimsical don’t even begin to cover it.

Koprivshtitsa, Bulgaria

An offbeat mountainside village in the heart of Bulgaria that seems to have captured the Balkan country’s identity perfectly, Koprivshtitsa is traversed by cobbled pathways, filled with colorful buildings, and loaded with history.

Not only is it a literal open-air folk museum, with rows upon rows of brightly-painted townhouses with the famous covered balconies and carved ceilings, it is the birthplace of the 1876 April Uprising, which marked Bulgaria’s most important revolt against the Ottoman Empire.

A stroll through Koprivshtitsa feels like peeking into a time capsule, where not much has changed in the last 200 years. The fresh mountain air, the rolling green hills, and the little stream winding through the heart of town all add to its mystique.

Pyrgi, Greece

Located in the North Aegean region of Greece, Chios is already pretty off-path as an island, away from the chaos of Santorini and Mykonos. There are numerous crowd-free, postcard-ready villages to explore here, but if you only have time, Mesta is where you should be headed:

One of the ‘Mastic Villages’, it is distinguished by its xysta, an ensemble of historic houses clad with intricate, black-and-white geometric designs. They’re everywhere to be seen, and though uniform in theme, every house has its own character.

At the heart of Pyrgi, you’ll find a lively, tree-shaded square bordered by cozy tavernas, the ideal spot to sip some mastiha while admiring the patterned buildings. If we may add, Manoula serves the best homemade orange cake on the island.

Hall in Tirol, Austria

A laid-back, sleepy town in the Alps, only 14 minutes by bus from the popular ski resort city of Innsbruck, Hall in Tirol is oftentimes considered the best-maintained medieval town in the Western part of Austria, and we’re inclined to agree.

It has scenic towers, gabled-roof houses, building façades decorated with elaborate motifs, and for the History buffs out there, a noteworthy coin minting past. In fact, Hasegg Castle, the local fortress, is where the ‘thaler’ was originally coined.

This is the coin that would eventually give rise to the word ‘dollar’, but if we’re talking treasured material heritage, Hall’s crown jewel has to be Pfarrkirche St. Nikolaus. This 14th-century church features stuccoes and a magnificent gilded altar, unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Sighișoara, Romania

Located in Transylvania, the mystical Romanian hinterland, Sighișoara is the charming, medieval village you never knew you needed visiting until now. We’re talking eerie-looking Gothic spires towering above narrow lanes, pastel-hue façades, and even vampiric tales to go with them.

The landmark Clock Tower is the main attraction here, but there are 9 other similar edifices standing watch at the town’s entry points, and on top of that, an idyllic Church on the Hill (Biserica din Deal), and restored medieval abodes.

Speaking of which, the most notorious of those has to be Vlad Dracul House (Tin Street No. 1). Yep, as in, the actual historical figure that inspired the Dracula tale. Before becoming a fearsome, bloodthirsty ruler, he was born in this exact spot in Sighișoara in 1431.

Provins, France

A brief 1h15 train ride from the hustle and bustle that is Paris, pulling up to the gare in the picturesque provincial town of Provins is like peeking into a completely different universe: one where photo ops, Eiffel Tower selfies, and Instagrammable flowery cafés do not matter.

A rare snapshot into life back in the Middle Ages, it is a UNESCO-protected town encircled by imposing ramparts and dotted with historic buildings. For instance, the Caesar Keep is a 12th-century monumental tower featuring vaulted rooms and panoramic terraces.

To all our fellow sweet fiends out there, you must check out Gourmandises Médiévales, a shop specializing in medieval confections, a short walk from Place du Châtel, the main square. You can even sample the O.G. almond-based macaron recipe!
