This one’s a first — a groundbreaking flight is set to whisk Americans away to one of Croatia’s top beach destinations for travelers hoping not to feel walled in by Dubrovnik’s summer crowds.

Split, located on the Dalmatian Coast, is anything but spotty.

In fact, it’s one of Croatia’s liveliest and most vibrant coastal cities, blending sun-soaked beaches, Roman ruins, island-hopping excursions, and a postcard-worthy Old Town that feels every bit as magnetic as Dubrovnik — just without quite as many elbows in your ribs.

There’s no doubt it’s popular, but a bit harder to reach — until now.

United is set to launch its inaugural flight on April 30, 2026, from Newark (EWR), but hey, at least you can start the trip strong and feel safe doing so!

Despite its mainstream popularity in recent years, I’m not ashamed to say Iceland is my favorite country out of all 40+ countries I’ve traversed.

To be honest, I’m afraid to go back because I visited twice before it revoked its hidden gem status, but there’s no changing its Interstellar landscapes and the world-famous Blue Lagoon.

We’re not here to sugarcoat Iceland — it’s not hard to visit since its flagship Icelandair flies from numerous U.S. cities.

Inverness, Scotland

The quiet, unassuming capital of the Scottish Highlands, Inverness is still largely undiscovered by most UK-bound tourists, which is a shame, because it could easily step right out of a storybook.

Perched on the northern shores of Loch Ness, the mystical lake said to harbor a serpent-like monster, the city boasts a gorgeous historic castle overlooking a café-lined waterfront, lively shopping streets flanked by Georgian buildings, and charming little corners made for wandering.

Inverness is rather rainy and breezy year-round, even in summer, so pack a light rain jacket. But the good news? Even if it starts “pissing down,” as the Scots say, it’s rarely for long. Sunshine, and often a beautiful rainbow is likely to follow the Northerly downpour.

The hottest it usually gets this far north in Britain is around 65°F, dropping to 50°F in the evenings.

A short 30-minute drive brings you to Urquhart Castle, one of Britain’s most scenic castle ruins, right on Loch Ness’ shores. Even closer, just 15 minutes out of town, the Culloden Battlefield marks the historic 1746 Jacobite uprising.

Venture a bit further, and the Cairngorms offer hiking paths and stunning forested scenery. For a full-day adventure, roughly 3 hours each way, the Isle of Skye is Scotland’s ultimate island escape, complete with fairy pools, towering waterfalls plunging into the ocean, and romantic castles.

The U.K. and Europe in general have recently changed their entry rules for American tourists, and this includes Scotland. Bringing a valid passport to the airport is no longer sufficient to be allowed boarding in UK-bound flights.

Tignes, France

One of the highest settlements in Europe, perched on a glacial plateau about 3,030 meters above sea level, Tignes is basically the top move if you want to escape the summer heat in July. Think daytime highs around 62°F and nighttime lows near 40°F.

Aka perfect “I can finally wear a jacket again” weather.

It’s best known in winter for its winding red pistes and reliable snow, but in summer, the whole place flips into a hiker’s and biker’s paradise. You’ve got well-marked trails leading to uncrowded, crystal-clear lakes, wildflower-covered slopes, and ridiculous views of snow-capped peaks in every direction.

The Vanoise area is packed with 40+ bike trails, ridgelines, and alpine routes, and honestly, that’s probably the main reason to go in summer. Riding through all that lush green scenery with the Alps looming in the background is kind of unreal.

And even if you’re not exactly trying to break a sweat, you can still get the full alpine experience. Just hop on the “Snowpiercer” funicular from Val Claret, the highest part of Tignes, up toward the Grande Motte glacier.

The views are straight-up magical, and there’s a very deserved apéro waiting for you at the top.

My favorite part about Tignes? It’s considerably safer, more family-oriented, and a higher-trust society than what Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and most French powerhouse cities have become. None of the scamming, street violence, or low security levels.

You’re not just breathing fresh, crisp mountain air. You’re actually breathing unbothered.

How Dangerous Is Paris Right Now?

Åland

Autonomous Territory Of Finland

If you’ve read our recent article 4 Of The Weirdest But Also Coolest Places To Visit In Europe, you probably know by now we have a soft spot for the odd geopolitical anomaly.

Åland is an island that lies off the coast of Sweden, and given a majority of the residents proudly identify as, and speak Swedish as their mother language, you’d expect it to be part of the Scandinavian kingdom… right?

Wrong answer. Finland is the sovereign power here.

Though Åland enjoys a high degree of autonomy, being responsible for its own government, education, and internal affairs, it’s officially part of Finland, and Finnish citizenship applies.

It’s also an island in the middle of the icy Baltic Sea, so you might want to give it a miss right now if you hate strong winds and gray, moody weather; this probably isn’t the right time to go.

In summer, though? Completely different story: when the sun shines, it turns into a paradise for biking, with flat, easy cycling routes, and it’s probably Europe’s most underrated natural getaway, from the red granite shores to the castle-dotted pine forests inland.

Mariehamn, the small but charming capital, is ridiculously cute, with its colorful, chalet-style wooden townhouses, and that classic sea-then-sauna combo that’s just the ultimate Nordic flex.

Weather-wise, you’ll still want to pack at least a few sweaters, because even in July, the hottest it usually gets is around 67°F.

Kristiansand, Norway

Sticking to the Nordics, you probably know by now that Norway is the go-to destination for escaping the heat, but tourists usually flock to Oslo, Bergen, and the Ålesund fjords up north. Let’s face it: you don’t want Italy’s blazing sun, but you also don’t want to be freezing cold on your one year summer getaway.

In that case, the picture-perfect Kristiansand is the top pick. Highs: 66–72°F. Lows: 52–57°F.

It has the postcard-ready harbor, the white wooden houses flanking narrow cobbled streets, particularly around the Posebyen district, and the unrivaled café culture you can only dream of in America. Craving those fluffly, sugar-sprinkled Norwegian cinnamon buns?

Check out Raccoon right in the heart of town.

In sum, Kristiansand is one of the easiest, prettiest, most chill summer cities in Norway, and the fact it straddles the southern coast makes it that much sunnier than your average Norwegian port town. Brits have Brighton, the French have Nice, Norwegians have Kristiansand.

Additionally, it is a perfect gateway to the Sørlandet Coast, known for its coastal skerries and little islands, sandy beaches, and laid-back coastal charm…

But no tall, epic fjords like Sognefjord or Geirangerfjord.

For that, you might want to head farther north.

By the way, if you’ve been reading the news lately, you probably know Americans will start getting fingerprinted when traveling to Europe this summer.

A big misconception among tourists is that this only applies to the European Union, of which Norway is not a member.

Wrong. It applies to all countries within the Schengen Zone, in which Norway participates.

Groningen, Netherlands

What most travelers don’t know is that they don’t necessarily need to go to the ‘Dam, and elbow their way through the maddening crowds, or choke in a haze of skunk smoke, to experience Dutch culture… nor suffer through the Paris and Rome heat.

Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands, is a much better pick.

Still big enough of a city, with a thriving uni student scene, your usual mix of downtown bars and nightclubs, yet at the same time, quieter, more local, and definitely not as tourist-saturated as Amsterdam’s Red Light District or packed museums.

You’ll be wandering in short shorts and a light jacket along gorgeous canals, admiring traditional Northern Mannerist houses, with their slender figures and stepped roofs, and hidden courtyards, and it will rarely ever be warmer than 70°F, or colder than 55°F.

It’s definitely not hot enough for beach-level sunbathing, but ideal for cycling, Old Town strolls, and chill café terrace moments.

Don’t miss Martini Tower, the big, medieval bell tower towering above the maze-like center: you can climb it for panoramic views of town and its verdant countryside.

On April 6, 2026, Amsterdam Centraal experienced delays due to overcrowding and operational restrictions. Travelers were urged to allow extra time for train connections.

We’re not sure about you, but there’s no other way we’d rather explore Europe than by train. Though you could make an argument for sustainability, in reality, it goes far beyond that:

Trains are generally more reliable than budget carriers like Ryanair and easyJet, you don’t risk getting charged upwards of $50 because the wheels on your cabin luggage just slightly stick out past the fitter, and let’s face it, it’s just far more scenic and fits the Old World vibe.

Now, if you’re planning a Scanditrip this year, you might want to hold off on booking those flights until you read this.

Passenger trains are relaunching from Finland into Sweden. Both countries share a 345-mile border, yet have not enjoyed rail connections in over since, ahem, 1988.

There’s a reason for that, which we’ll get to briefly, but first, here’s everything you need to know about the exciting new route:

Finland To Sweden By Train

Starting June 2026, you’ll be able to travel from Helsinki, the capital of Finland, via the tundra-covered Lapland, all the way to Stockholm in Sweden, for the first time in over 30 years.

Now, the journey is long, and not exactly an alternative to flying if you’re planning to move quickly between cities, but it’s a major development, nonetheless.

Prior to this announcement, passengers traveling on this route could only get as far as Tornio, a small town in Finland facing Sweden. From there, they would have to either take a taxi, or bus it some 1.2 miles into Haparanda, the neighboring Swedish town, before boarding a Stockholm-bound train.

As Finnish broadcaster Yle News explains, Finnish VR trains will now terminate at a soon-to-be-restored station in Haparanda instead of Tornio. The building dates back to the early 1900s, and it’s currently being refurbished to act as a connecting hub for passengers to cross the border more seamlessly.

Why Haven’t Cross-Border Trains Launched Before?

It still won’t be a ‘sit on the train and ride across’ experience, but instead of arriving first to Tornio, then commuting to Haparanda, you’ll simply have to walk through the station building to switch from the Finnish VR to the Swedish Norrtåg train going to Stockholm.

The whole transfer will take only a few minutes.

There is currently a rail line linking the two towns. Regrettably, there’s an operational issue that dates back all the way to the 19th century, when Finland was under the Russian Empire:

The Finnish track gauge is set to the old Russian standard of 1524mm, versus the standardized European 1435mm, which is used in Sweden. This means trains would just derail if they tried to cross the border.

With the reopening of the old station in Haparanda, where the Finnish and Swedish rail networks meet, on-foot transfers across the border will become a lot easier.

What Does The Journey Look Like?

We’re fast-approaching launch month, yet further route details, including stations it will call at, timetables, and ticket prices, have not been released. Based on the current, bumpier existing route, however, we can make an educated guess:

The journey is roughly 458 miles, and even once the gap between border towns are bridged, if your goal is to travel from Helsinki all the way to Stockholm, this is still a multiple-day journey involving multiple stops.

Of course, it’s a lot easier if you’re breaking up the trip in parts, or you’re traveling to and from any other intermediate points along the way.

Let’s split it into four legs, starting with Leg 1.

Finland is one of the safest destinations in Europe, enjoying a certified-safe Level 1 status according to U.S. authorities. However, not all European destinations are the same, particularly parts of Sweden, where crime has surged in recent years.

Break Up Your Trip

For those traveling the full extent of the route, in practice, the journey from Helsinki to Stockholm takes between 3 and 4 days depending on your train connections.

Going from Oulo to Haparanda in Sweden as a short cross-border trip? Easy-peasy. Just stay on the trian past Tornio, and you’ll be arriving straightou to Haparanda’s newly-restored station.

Moving between any other intermediate points, or any of the two capital terminuses on this multi-day route? That’s when it starts looking either like a complex, logistical nightmare, or the greatest, most exciting Scandinavian adventure ever.

Step aside France, Italy, Spain: there’s a new cooler kid in the block, one that isn’t drowing in a wave of crime, or buckling under the weight of overtourism for once.

Tucked away in its well-protected, cozy Central-Eastern European nook, Hungary wrapped up last year hosting a record-breaking 20 million tourists.

As far as foreign visitors go, that’s a 12 percent jump over 2024, according to the Hungarian Conservative, and with demand still going strong, it’s looking like it’ll only get hotter in 2026.

Even if you’re not a seasoned traveler or a full-on Europhile, chances are you’ve heard of Budapest.

But if you’re wondering what else Hungary’s got up its sleeve, think summery lakes lined with resort towns, fairytale castles straight out of a storybook, and medieval villages that feel like time just… forgot about them.

One City To Rule Them All

Of course, there’s no Hungary without its beating heart, the cultural powerhouse, magnanimous former imperial seat that is Budapest.

A tale of two cities, Buda and Pest, that once sat on opposite sides of the Danube River prior to joining forces, it is simply one of the most beautiful European cities you could visit.

Honestly, if Paris had you staring slack-jawed at those Haussmann buildings, or London charmed you with its decaying Victorian-era polish, nothing can really prep you for a glorious BUD.

Think grand boulevards lined with palatial buildings you’d swear are museums, government offices, or luxury hotels, but are actually just residential apartment blocks dating back to the Habsburg days.

Add in a riverfront straight out of a dream, with soaring domes and spires reflecting off the fast-moving Danube, plus thermal spas tucked inside ornate 19th-century bathhouses, and yeah… It’s kind of on another level, if we’re honest.

How Safe Is Budapest On A Night Out?

Other than admiring the stunning architecture, you should swing by Szimpla Kert, the OG ‘ruin bar’ in town, basically a half-genius maze inside a crumbling building filled with mismatched furniture, loud neon art, bathtubs that double as sofas, and graffiti-splattered corners.

The best thing about Budapest is that, unlike some European capitals that have seen increases in crime in recent years, it remains generally safe and low-risk for travelers.

No getting followed home at night if you’re a woman by sketchy-looking individuals, nor constantly casting one of those “just in case” glances over your shoulder to make sure no hooded figures are lurking in the shadows.

The U.S. State Department currently lists it as a Level 1 destination, the safest classification a city can get.

Pickpockets, violent crime, and scams aren’t exactly a major concern in Budapest, but if you’re heading elsewhere in Europe, it’s still a good idea to double-check any Travel Alerts in place at your destination using the Travel Advisory Checker.

Where The Real Magic Happens

Budapest is grand, but the real magic happens when you take that old rattling train out of the sprawling capital and into the virtually untouched Hungarian countryside.

If you have a soft spot for small villages that look like they’ve jumped out of the pages of a storybook, Szentendre has the cobblestone streets, pastel Baroque houses, and quaint riverside cafés dishing out fresh-out-the-oven pastries and artsy coffee.

Unlike your average Disneyfied European hotspot, it’s completely devoid of the usual selfie-taking hordes.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hollókő is that postcardy town that feels frozen in time. It has perfectly intact wooden medieval churches, whitewashed houses, and family-run taverns that keep folk traditions alive.

Over in Eger, in the heart of the namesake wine country, you’ll find a castle town filled with wine cellars, more Baroque monuments, and thermal baths with half the Budapest crowds.

If you’re here for some full-on medieval drama, the unassuming Visegrád may be tiny, but it’s packed with history: It houses the ruins of a medieval royal palace, and the hilltop citadel overlooks a sharp bend in the Danube. Hands down one of the best viewpoints in the entire country.

Hungary’s prettiest small town, you ask? Tihany is famous for its Benedictine Abbey perched on a hill overlooking Lake Balaton, the ‘Hungarian Sea‘, and endless fields of lavender in summer. Feels just like Provence, minus the hefty price tag.

Is Hungary Still Affordable In 2026?

Speaking of prices, Hungary is not the dirt-cheap destination mainstream publications will have you believe it is.

Then again, it’s not like we’re surprised, given the already-debunked ‘Hidden Gem Marseille‘ debacle, but definitely don’t believe everything you read on the internet, especially if it’s written by legacy media that’s maybe 3 to 5 years behind on travel trends.

That said, Hungary is affordable, although Budapest in particular is rapidly catching up with Western European capitals in terms of costs.

For instance, tickets for the iconic Széchenyi Thermal Bath in Budapest have doubled since 2020. The “basic” ticket now costs around $40, without extras. If you’re adding a private cabin, locker, additional towels, or weekend/peak-time upgrades, that can easily bump up to $55–$70+ per person.

Cocktails in ruin bars and touristy areas usually run about $6–$14 each, and a draught beer in a central pub is roughly $3–$5.

It’s still cheaper than most of Western Europe, but it’s definitely a step up from that old “super cheap Budapest” reputation that’s still floating around.

Hotels and Airbnb are where you actually see how BUD and cities like Paris or Rome don’t actually differ that much. A mid-range listing will set you back $130–$200/night in peak season, whereas budget hostels are still cheap-ish, but even those have gone up to $25–$60/night in good areas like Districts V or VII.

As for eating out, a simple local meal costs $8–$15. A restaurant dinner with drinks is $25–$30 per person.

Out in the country, smaller towns are generally cheaper, with meals often costing under $10, beer or wine ranging from $1.50 to $3, and accommodation starting from $30.

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Underrated and Balkan go hand in hand, and there’s no more unsung, crossroads-of-civilizations, criminally-overlooked capital than Sarajevo, the administrative heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Now, Bosnia itself is a modern mish-mash of cultures, including Orthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats, and a majority of Muslim Bosniaks, so it’s only fair that the capital city would be reflective of the nation’s diverse character.

In the heart of Baščaršija, the Muslim-majority area, you’ll find the landmark Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, an icon of Ottoman architecture, and one of the most prominent mosques in the Balkans. With the bazaar-style shops, cobbled streets, and ornate ablution fountains, the whole area truly feels like a slice of Turkey.

The craziest part? Walk some 6 minutes from the Muslim quarter of town, and you’ll hit the Sacred Heart Cathedral, a neo-Gothic marvel surrounded by Austro-Hungarian buildings, Central Europe-style café terraces, and tram-rattled boulevards.

Sarajevo still has one more trick up its sleeve. Right around the corner from the Catholic cathedral, there stands a massive Orthodox Cathedral, catering to the local Serb population, anchored by ćevapi spots and coffee houses.

Tie it all together, Sarajevo has a fascinating local history:

Its scenic Latin Bridge, spanning the Miljacka River, is where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, an event that infamously triggered World War I, and all around the Old Quarter, you can still spot scars of the bloody Bosnian War of the 90s, from bullet holes to sniper signage and abandoned shells of buildings.

Berlin may have the war-era hype, but Sarajevo feels like the real deal.

Tirana, Albania

Balkan capitals for the win.

Now, listen, Tirana’s not really somewhere you go for insanely beautiful architecture, picture-perfect corners that scream Europe, or that quaint, lovely Old World feel, but it feels inebriatingly authentic and gritty.

Even if it’s, hem, a little rough around the edges.

You see, Albania was stuck under an iron-fisted communist rule for many decades, and Tirana may have taken the brunt of that. While smaller Albanian towns like Berat and Gjirokaster still have a hint of a medieval charm, much of the capital’s historic flair was flattened or overwritten.

No castles, hardly any cobbled lanes, nor showstopping façades.

What you get today is an eclectic mix of modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers that don’t really seem to follow a strict urban pattern, commie-style apartment blocks that wouldn’t exactly look out of place in Russia, and weird, but incredibly cool Brutalist installations that will defy your sense of a European cityscape.

Want an example? Tirana Pyramid is an icon of the skyline, originally built in the 80s as a museum dedicated to Enver Hoxha, the communist leader at the time. After the fall of communism, the bunker-like structure became an exhibition space, a conference hall, and even a temporary TV station.

Now, it’s just a climbing spot for locals to catch the sunset over Tirana’s minarets and gleaming new high-rises.

Hoxha didn’t stop there: he was terrified Albania would eventually be invaded and overrun, so he built an insane amount of bunkers across the country.

One of the main ones is right in the capital, Bunk’Art, now a massive underground museum depicting life under the regime.

It’s dark, claustrophobic, and even a little unsettling, yet it’s one of the most eye-opening experiences you can do in town. Other than, of course, swinging by the Blloku district to explore the stylish café scene, or walking the serene footpaths looping around the big Artificial Lake in the middle of the metropolis.

Albania has had a reputation for being one of the dodgier, more obscure countries in Europe, but it’s come a looong way since its dark early noughties days. This is what travelers have been reporting as of late:

Nicosia, Cyprus

The Last Divided Capital in Europe, Nicosia is a sad, yet fascinating tale, and a modern Berlin of the sorts that never quite got its reunification.

For context, Cyprus is a Greek-majority island-nation in the East Mediterranean with a Turkish minority. In the 70s, Turkey invaded it and occupied roughly a third of the territory, including the northern half of Nicosia, effectively splitting the city in half.

The jingoistically-Greek south is currently administered by the internationally-recognized Republic of Cyprus, a member of the European Union, whereas the northern part of town is under the jurisdiction of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

No international recognition, no EU membership, but effectively its own country, nonetheless.

The division was never settled, and this remains one of the most contentious topics in geopolitics to this day. In practice, if you’re visiting Ledra Street in Nicosia today, the main thoroughfare running through the heart of the capital, you’ll eventually hit a roadblock:

There’s a border post right in the middle of the street, and in order to get from here to there, you’ll need to show your passport.

The green line running along the UN Buffer Zone is also fascinating to watch, with coffeeshops and taverna terraces literally lining barricaded alleys and narrow streets, and barbed wire providing the backdrop.

In the south, expect to pay for your unequivocally-Greek gyros in euros, and don’t be surprised by the amount of Orthodox churches per square mile. Cross north, however, and it’s the Islamic call to prayer blasting from old Ottoman minarets, old caravanserai hosting lively bazaars, and the Turkish half-moon everywhere.

If you’re going to Cyprus this year, make sure you double check the security situation beforehand. The island is dangerously-close to the Middle East, and it’s been directly-impacted by the ongoing conflict:

Bern, Switzerland

Now, here’s something you might not know about Switzerland. As much as people mistakenly peg Zurich (or, on occasion, Geneva) as the capital, neither of the country’s top financial hubs holds that title.

In fact, no city officially does, but ask any Swiss where the national capital is, and they’ll point to the much-smaller, quaint, unassuming Bern, tucked right near the Alps.

Switzerland has no official capital on paper, so to keep all its wildly diverse, culturally distinct cantons on equal footing. That said, Bern—home to about 133,000 people—concentrates a majority of the federal institutions.

But it’s far from being just another administrative hub, and that’s why it’s so quietly charming.

It’s a capital-like town with a real European soul.

The medieval core is one of the most beautiful you’ll ever see: cobbled lanes winding along ocher-colored arcaded buildings, landmark clock towers tunneled for modern trams, and palace terraces overlooking snow-capped peaks.

No wonder it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Don’t miss Zytglogge, the medieval clock with its moving figurines that is Bern’s pride and joy, and Münster (Bern Cathedral), where climbing the tower gives epic views of the city’s grid-like streets and the surrounding nature.

The winding, turquoise Aare River only adds to the alpine charm.

Zagreb, Croatia

I’m sure you’re familiar with Dubrovnik’s imposing medieval walls, hugged by the Adriatic Sea, and the glamorous Split Riva, with its palm trees and Ancient Roman flair, but who’d have thought Croatia’s capital would be anything but Mediterranean in character?

The Balkan gem may be best known for its pebbly beaches, Dalmatian stone houses, and summery aesthetics, but Zagreb, its one true metropolis, lies much further inland, practically touching Central Europe, and it actually wouldn’t look out of place in either Hungary or Austria.

Instead of waterfront promenades and laid-back coffeeshop terraces, you get wide avenues lined with Habsburg edifices, palatial complexes housing art museums, and leafy parks and plazas pulsating with city life.

The Upper Town (Gornji Grad) feels like a living museum, with narrow streets twisting past pastel-hue buildings and centuries-old churches. The beautiful St. Mark’s, with its kaleidoscopic tiled roof, is effectively the city’s symbol.

A short stroll downhill, past the soaring Zagreb Cathedral, perhaps the largest Gothic offering south of the Alps, and you’ll reach the Lower Town (Donji Grad), home to lively squares, buzzing boulevards, and pedestrianized thoroughfares flanked by bakeries and boutique shops.

Ban Jelačić Square is the central meeting point where locals, tourists, street performers, and tram lines converge, a perfect snapshot of Zagreb life.

Zagreb isn’t exactly as grand as Paris, nor as vast as London, but it’s a cultural powerhouse in its own understated way. It’s simply a shame most of the beach-obsessed tourists skip it altogether.

Aegina, Greece

The pearl of the Saronic Gulf, a short 50 min ferry hop from the Port of Piraeus (the one that serves Athens), Aegina is all the Mamma Mia ̶s̶u̶m̶m̶e̶r spring you need.

Aegina Town, the main settlement on the island, is a colorful harbor featuring gorgeous Neoclassical buildings in lovely pastel colors, family-run seafood tavernas, and shops selling Aegina pistachios pretty much everywhere you look.

Speaking of, Aegina is the pistachio capital of Greece, and the local shell-covered seed found here actually has protected status. From gelato to pastries to liqueur and even pesto, you’ll find it in every imaginable form and shape.

If you’re here for the beaches, Agia Marina is one of the longest ones on the island, roughly 9 miles from the port.

Rent a bike, hit the coastal road headed northeast, and you’ll soon find a beautiful stretch of golden sand unraveling in the distance.

Came to Greece for the ancient culture? The 2,526-year-old Temple of Aphaia, perched on a hill with breathtaking views over the Saronic Gulf, is one of the best-preserved in Greece. In fact, it forms a ‘Sacred Triangle’ with the Parthenon in Athens, and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, except…

None of the usual crowds!

Bornholm, Denmark

Bornholm may be an island under Denmark, but given the fact that it lies off Sweden’s coast, somewhat detached from the Danish archipelago, and its unique hilly geography, a casual observer could easily mistake it for a Swedish island instead.

You see, most of Denmark is flat farmland and Holland-style dredged canals to keep the rising seas at bay. There’s definitely no significant elevation, or the kind of jaw-dropping nature you might associate with Scandinavia.

Bornholm feels like an entirely different country:

Along the coast, it’s mostly rocky cliffs and towering granite sea walls, whereas inland, you get lush pine forests and hillier terrain. Needless to say, the whole island’s like a hiker’s paradise for nature enthusiasts, and the best part?

Thanks to those allemansrätten Scandinavian laws governing nature use, most land is free to roam—though stricter rules on camping do apply—and there are barely any tourists out to crowd the gorgeous Baltic views or litter the place.

On top of that, Bornholm is home to four rare fortress-like round churches, most notably Østerlars, and one of the largest medieval ruins in Northern Europe: Hammershus, a former citadel, or what’s left of it, resting on the cliffs above the Baltic Sea.

That said, all that wild nature and beautiful ancient stuff comes at a price. Bornholm isn’t exactly the easiest place to get to.

There’s a reason why people jokingly say Bornholm feels indeed more Swedish than Danish. Most people drive from Copenhagen into Sweden, crossing the Øresund Bridge, and take a ferry from the Swedish port of Ystad (overall, the journey takes 3 hours in total).

Alternatively, there’s a night ferry leaving from Køge, Denmark (5.5h), or a shorter ferry from Sassnitz, on the German coast (1.5h).

Île d’Oléron, France

Similar to the increasingly trendy Île de Ré, which we’ve written about at length here, Île d’Oléron is an offbeat French island offshore from Brittany, on the west coast of France.

Unlike Bornholm, it’s a lot less complicated to get to, thanks to a bridge that ties it permanently to the mainland. That’s not to say it’s not a long way to travel, especially from Paris (5h38), but hey, no getting on and off ferries is already a major win.

We digress.

What has this secret French island you’ve probably never heard about got to offer? Well, how do pine forests crisscrossed by cycle paths, unruffled dunes and sandy beaches, and quaint fishing towns with no beret-clad Instagrammer in sight sound?

The capital and largest town, Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, is where you go for that warm, neighborly welcome to the island: bustling harbor, shops, cafés, and weekend farmers’ markets loaded with every local product under the sun, from goat cheese to freshly-caught oysters.

Side note: Oléron is basically France’s oyster capital, and you won’t find’em tastier or fresher than at Auberge le Saint Pierre.

It might be a little cool in April to swim in the North Atlantic, but if you’re up for a relaxing coastal walk, Plage de Gatseau is a wide sandy beach, hugged by shallow, gentle waters.

You may even spot brave locals sprinting into the surf with wetsuits on. Just keep in mind this is not the South of France, and those beautiful, bright-blue waters you see off the coast are not the warm Mediterranean.

Try dipping your toes first, see how you feel about it before running after them.

Of course, it’s not a French island without a château, and over at Le Château-d’Oléron, a picturesque coastal town, you can visit a monumental star-shaped fort built in the 1600s. There are also excellent seafood restaurants and oyster farms nearby.

Ponza, Italy

Forget Capri and its invite-only, celeb-frequented beach clubs and jam-packed spiaggie: if it’s a tourist-free, tucked-away Italian gem you’re seeking, you should probably check out Ponza, the largest landmass in the Pontine archipelago, some 23 miles from the nearest mainland at Anzio.

Getting there isn’t exactly a breeze, whether you’re traveling from Rome or Naples—add to that a short train, then a couple of hours by hydrofoil—but the minute you step off that boat, the island’s unspoiled charm makes every stressful minute of travel worthwhile.

Rugged cliffs plunging straight into the clear turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, hidden coves that can only be reached by small boat, and timeless coastal towns lined with them traditional skinny ocher-colored townhouses…

Yes, the ones with the green shutters, you know, from the postcards.

The main town, Ponza Porto, is the island’s heartbeat. Picture a boat-fringed harbor, gelaterie and seafood trattorie galore, colorful houses hanging from coastal cliffsides, and small boutiques.

The perfect day in Ponza Porto consists of grabbing an espresso on the quayside, watching fishermen bring in their daily catch, then strolling the lively backstreets before swinging by Buco Divino for a casual, but quality lunch.

When it comes to beaches, the most beautiful, and arguably more tranquil, is the crescent-shaped Chiaia di Luna. It’s where locals themselves will flock to on the odd-hot spring day, either for an early-season swim or simply to bask in the sun.

Due to Ponza’s rugged nature, there aren’t that many sandy stretches on the island, but Chiaia di Luna is a rare exception: here, you’ll be greeted with soft sands, shallow waters at the edges, and clear blue seas.

A Illa de Arousa, Spain

The only island-municipality in Galicia, A Illa de Arousa, or simply Arousa, is a low-key gem of northwestern Spain, where you go to unwind and soak in their slow, coastal life.

With tidal estuaries, reed-lined inlets, sandy coves kissed by calm Atlantic waves, and small fishing villages still largely untouched by tourists—like much of Galicia, for that matter—Arousa is the serene Transatlantic escape you’ve been dreaming of.

The island is sparsely populated, with fewer than 5,000 residents, so it doesn’t really have a “main town.” Think of it like neighborhoods or parish districts that together form a single community.

Out of those, Carril is perhaps the most important, thanks to being the busiest port and primary landing point. It’s probably where you’ll make landfall if crossing by boat from the mainland.

That said, administratively, San Xulián da Illa de Arousa is the parish and main town, where most local services, shops, and the town hall are centered.

All around the island, it’s whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and that unmistakable maritime vibe you can feel in every corner. Arousa’s main attractions, however, are its wild beaches, often lined with soft, golden sands and calm waters.

Now, this is the northwest of Spain, not the Mediterranean, so you might want to test the waters before diving in. For those coming later in the season, say early May, try Area da Secada or A Lanzada—hands down the best swimming spots on the island.

Naturally, no Galician getaway would be complete without a touch of history, and lucky for the culture buffs like us, all around the island, you’ll spot ancient stone chapels, small abandoned fortifications, and maritime watchtowers that date back centuries

How to get to this off-path slice of paradise, you ask? Drive or take local transport from Pontevedra or Santiago de Compostela (which will soon host nonstop flights from Newark) to the ferry dock at Vilagarcía de Arousa, then hop on a short ferry ride to Arousa (5–10 minutes).

Pantelleria, Italy

One of the southernmost points in Italy—south of Sicily, at that—Pantelleria is one of those rare European islands where seasons are experienced a little… differently.

For starters, it’s actually closer to the coast of North Africa than it is to Europe, so you can rest assured winters (and springtime) there are mild at best, and when those Sahara-originated heatwaves hit, they hit hard.

Known for its volcanic soul, with rugged hills cloaked in rolling vineyards and natural hot springs, and a scenic coastline fringed by rugged coves and lava-formed black pebble shores, Pantelleria is perhaps Italy’s top unwind spot.

A long weekend here consists of hitting up Specchio di Venere, an inland lake filled with thermal waters, swimming in the turquoise seas off Cala Gadir, and admiring the traditional pantesche stone farmhouses (the famous dammusi), which are the island’s architectural signature.

Rhodes, Greece

One of the easternmost islands in the Mediterranean, practically touching Turkey, Rhodes welcomes spring (and good weather) a lot sooner than the trendy Cyclades, or the Ionian side of Greece.

Expect roughly 9 hours of sunshine daily, minimal rainfall (about 1 inch over 3–6 days), and comfortable highs of 68–70°F. Perfect for sightseeing without bearing the brunt of the Greek summer heat, and early-season beach dips.

Speaking of which, Rhodes is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, from the Anthony Quinn-named bay filled with crystal-clear waters, to the wind-swept Prasonisi, a skinny sandbar wedged between the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.

If I may add, there’s no better time to explore ancient ruins than April, before cruise crowds swarm and the sun’s relentless.

For that reason, don’t miss Rhodes’ epic coastal acropolis at Lindos, or its UNESCO-listed capital, Rhodes Town: a medieval cobblestone maze ringed by imposing walls.

How to Get There From America: Via Athens (ATH). Daily flight connections to Rhodes (RHO) are available, or if you’re not in a hurry, you may catch an overnight ferry starting from the Port of Piraeus.

Antalya, Turkey

The Queen of the Turkish Mediterranean, Antalya straddles the southern coast where it’s perpetual spring or full summer—no surprise it’s a top pick for Europeans chasing an early-season sunny escape.

It’s mostly sunny with limited rain, and during the day, temperatures can rise as high as 73°F, dropping to a still-pleasant 58°F overnight. Antalya’s right on the coast, so chances are those coming here are hoping for a Mediterranean splash.

Water’s not summer-warm yet, but it’s already 65°F. Cool-ish, but swimmable for most.

In that case, the city has beautiful beaches to pick from: if you’re staying in Konyaaltı, you have a whole 4.5 miles of pebbles running along bright-blue seas, with the majestic Taurus Mountains for backdrop.

In the heart of Antalya’s Old Town, the timeless Kaleiçi, Mermerli is a small, exclusive pebbly cove right below the ancient walls, accessible via steps from a clifftop restaurant. Renting a sunbed and an umbrella for the day will set you back around $11–$13.

What About The Conflict In The Middle East?

Turkey’s a transcontinental state, with a tiny portion of it (roughly 3%) in European soil, but the vast majority in the Middle East. Antalya is located in Asia Minor, or the ‘Middle Eastern’ side of Turkey.

Given the proximity to the Levant, where most of the ongoing conflict is centered, the city, or even the wider country aren’t exactly immune to being directly impacted by drones or Tehran assaults. In fact, Turkey is one of two European countries that have been officially targeted by Iranian missiles.

On any average spring day, expect highs of 73°F, though temps can spike to 82°F, especially mid-to-late April.

It’s inland, so there are no beaches nearby, really, but Seville’s main draws are the riverside strolls, orange-blossom-scented plazas, and lively Santa Cruz quarter. If you love stumbling upon flamenco performers and historic tapa bars at every turn, you know where to go.

Dominated by a minaret-turned-cathedral tower, the striking La Giralda, the Historic Center is a living mosaic of narrow lanes twisting past whitewashed houses with flower-laden balconies, tiny squares that feel like secret gardens, and pedestrian-friendly thoroughfares flanked by inviting café terraces.

And can we talk about Plaza de España? Hands down Spain’s prettiest plaza, if not Europe’s, it’s a half-moon canal-ringed stunner backed by decorative azulejo benches and a palatial pavilion blending Renaissance and Moorish splendor.

Gotland, Sweden

A Swedish island in the Baltic Sea that exists in a different microcosm altogether than the buzzing, cosmopolitan Stockholm, Gotland is known for its rugged nature, dramatic coastline interpersed with unruffled beaches, and understated medieval heritage:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Visby is the Gotlander capital and cultural heart, best known for its imposing defensive walls—some of the best-preserved ones in Northern Europe, at that—charming cobbled streets, and 12th-century cathedral.

Over in Lummelunda, you’ll find Sweden’s longest limestone cave, with otherworldly stalactite-framed chambers and underground streams, and if it’s those deserted sandy beaches you’re after, Tofta is a solid pick.

Just bear in mind, this ain’t the Mediterranean: yes, Sweden might throw you the occasional actually-hot summer day, but as for the water? This is still the Baltic Sea. Jump right in without testing the waters first, and it’ll slap your soul right out of your body.

Osijek, Croatia

The crown jewel of Slavonia, a culturally distinct region of Croatia that feels like a whole world apart from the heavily Italianate, Mediterranean Dalmatia, Osijek is one of the country’s most under-the-radar, yetbeautiful cities.

It looks like most Dubrovnik-spellbound tourists aren’t keen on veering off the main established tourist route and exploring eastern Croatia, after all. No stone-built, Dalmatian houses, winding cobbled streets, or long coastal promenades: Osijek has a different kind of beauty.

Primarily Central European in character, it is home to a stunning Neo-Gothic cathedral, built in red brick with a prominent central tower, pedestrian-friendly lanes flanked by ornate Austro-Hungarian buildings, and a monumental Baroque citadel.

Locally known as Tvrđa, it’s practically a town within a town, with cobble-paved streets, historic buildings, a museum, and cozy cafés serving hot, just-baked spinach-and-cheese burek, and the dark, rich, espresso-style kava. A Croatian immaterial heritage.

Udine, Italy

A short 2-hour train ride from Venice, Udine revolves around a landmark Piazza della Libertà—Italy’s most beautiful in my book—featuring arcaded buildings, an ornamented column topped with the Venetian winged lion, and a quietly iconic Loggia del Lionello:

You won’t find it on most Italian travel brochures, yet it’s a 15th-century Gothic Town Hall distinguished by its striking pink-and-white stone front and a crenellated roof that’s still largely intact. One of the most memorable you’ll see in Italy.

Other must-sees include Udine Castle, a hilltop fortress boasting panoramic city views, and the unassuming Cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore: it’s not exactly the most impressive seen from the outside, with its bare façade, but it houses masterful frescoes.

The Historic Center itself is an absolute joy to wander, with its many trattorie, dishing out pumpkin-filled tortelli and other Friulian delicacies, piazzette bordered by slender, pastel-colored buildings, and an unrivaled lived-in feel. You know, English isn’t exactly widely spoken or heard up here.

Saaremaa, Estonia

Tallinn, the postcard-ready capital of Estonia, is already pretty offbeat and uncrowded enough for most, but if you’re craving a real feel of the remote, you should definitely take the first ferry out to Saaremaa, the country’s largest island:

With beaches that run for endless miles without a single human in sight, and verdant fields sprinkled with castles and tight-knit communities, it’s been a prime R&R weekend getaway since the USSR years. Yep, as in the former Soviet Union, of which Estonia was a part.

This is one of those niche destinations Estonians—and formerly Russians—used to come to unwind and recharge. The capital, Kuressaare, is dominated by a perfectly preserved medieval Episcopal Castle and its sparsely populated, windmill-dotted townscape.

Add the scattered patches of green and a scenic waterfront to top it off, and you’ll get why Estonians flock in here for that much-needed sense of tranquility. Kuressaare is gorgeous, alright, but you haven’t truly been to Saaremaa until you’ve headed out into nature:

Kaali Meteorite Crater is a meteorite impact site that formed a small lake, nestled in a lush forest, and Saaremaa’s most-prized natural attraction.

I’d say that’s the island’s biggest “wow” moment—if it weren’t for Panga Cliff, of course—I’ve always had a soft spot for limestone cliffs that command epic coastal views at sunset.

I’m not necessarily an enthusiast for swimming in that ice-cold Baltic Sea myself, however, if we’re talking picnic on a long sandy beach, and dipping toes in shallow waters, Järve Beach is the closest to a Southern European beach getaway you’ll get this far Northeast.

Last year, the United Kingdom started enforcing its new entry and stay regulations, affecting millions of travelers worldwide.

Prior to that, traveling from the United States to Britain meant little to no hassle upon arrival: with eGates open to U.S. passport holders, all you had to do was rock up at the U.K. border, scan your document, and walk right in.

Now, Americans (and travelers from 83 other visa-exempt countries) need to apply for this travel document called UK ETA, which stands for ‘Electronic Travel Authorization‘. The easiest way to explain it is it’s a digital visa—without having one, you can’t travel to the U.K.

Interestingly enough, the United Kingdom’s so-called ‘Crown Dependencies’ had not been affected by the change.

Not to get into the tedious technicalities, a ‘Crown Dependency’ is basically a territory under the possession of the British Crown, and represented internationally by the United Kingdom, except its not part of the country itself. They have their own little thing going.

It seems this time, however, London is exercising whatever sovereignty it has over them:

ETA Will Be Rolled Out Across The Crown Dependencies From Spring

In a statement published this week, the Government of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, revealed that an ETA will be required for travel to the Crown Dependencies from April 2026.

This will help align their visa policy with the UK, as there are no routine passport checks traveling between both.

Naturally, the same will apply to the neighboring Bailiwick of Guernsey, as well as the more remote Isle of Man, a territory in the Irish Sea, between Great Britain and Ireland.

The good news is that, contrary to initial beliefs that individual ETAs would be needed for each of the autonomous territories, they will be using standard UK ETA, already in operation. It’s currently priced at £16 (roughly $21.60 at today’s conversion rate).

Until April 2026, however, direct travel from mainland Europe (e.g. France) to the Channel Islands, will not require obtaining an ETA. If you’re traveling via the United Kingdom, you will need to apply for the permit in advance.

Bailiwick of Jersey

The largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey has a fascinating mix of British and French cultures, evidenced in its architecture, ethnic makeup, and even the local language. It’s best known for its wild, sandy beaches, cliffside hiking paths, and WWII landmarks.

The capital, Saint Helier, has pedestrian-friendly streets lined with boutiques and British pubs galore. It’s also home to one of the most impressive medieval fortifications in Europe: Elizabeth Castle, a large castle with imposing ramparts located on a tidal islet.

For WWII enthusiasts, the Jersey War Tunnels are a must-see: ordered built by the Germans as an underground hospital, using forced labor from other enslaved Europeans. It’s now a museum documenting the 5-year German occupation of the island.

Bailiwick of Guernsey

The second-largest island in the Channel, Guernsey is pretty similar to Jersey in character: the capital, St. Peter Port, has a postcard-ready marina buzzing with fishing boats, a fort-protected harbor, and colorful houses in the surrounding hills.

The fort in question, Castle Cornet has been guarding the port since the late Middle Ages, and you can walk along its ramparts for panoramic views of St. Peter Port.

For the beach bums out there, Guernsey’s coastline is interspersed with hidden coves and sandy beaches, particularly along the southern stretch, and the best part? It’s all unruffled golden sands, and none of Europe’s usual crowds.

To my fellow culture buffs, Guernsey was the home of the then-exiled French writer Victor Hugo—as in, the same guy who wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misérables—and you can visit his place of residence at Hauteville House.

Isle of Man

The most remote of the autonomous dependencies, Isle of Man has its own distinct national identity, shaped by isolation, the Irish Sea trade, and Gaelic culture. It’s where you go for dramatic coastlines, quaint fishing villages dating back centuries, castles, and scenic train rides.

Douglas, the capital, boasts a long promenade, beautiful Victorian-era buildings, and horse-drawn trams. It’s the perfect base for exploring the island, and taking trips out to all of the following spots:

Castle Rushen, a Game of Thrones-like medieval castle, one of Europe’s best-preserved, with thick stone walls and towers you can climb for views over Castletown, a quaint coastal settlement.

Glen Maye is a lush inland park, crisscrossed by woodland walks and dotted with waterfalls, and if you’ve caught the Europe train bug lately, the island’s Steam Railway sits amidst the continent’s most scenic: it’s an old-school steam beauty slowly rattling through the countryside, towards a charming Port Erin.

How To Get A UK ETA For The Crown Dependencies

• Head over to Gov UK (or download the UK ETA app)
• Create an account and start an application
• Upload your passport and personal details
• Take a passport-style selfie (neutral backdrop, good lighting, all facial features clearly visible)
• Complete the security questions
• Submit the information
• Pay the UK ETA fee (£16)

Most UK ETAs are approved instantly, or within a few minutes (just check your mailbox upon applying), though their official deadline is 3 full working days, so best not to try your luck.

In other words, don’t leave applying until you’re about to board your flight, as airlines will deny you boarding if you don’t have a valid ETA.

An ETA is valid for 2 years from date of approval, or until your current passport expires if that’s sooner. In that case, it will no longer be valid, and you’ll need both a new passport and a new ETA.

The online document allows you to stay in the UK (and associated territories) for visits of up to 6 months at a time, and this includes England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
