It seems everyone’s got their eyes set on an Italian or Greek island summer this year, but you know what we’ve always said: when those turquoise-water and piña colada cravings hit, there’s nowhere better to switch off and kick it back than the good ol’ Caribbean.

Now, we get it if you don’t want to deal with the whole wiffle-waffle of international travel.

It’s a very different travel landscape than the one you were maybe used to from a few years back, what with the growing web of restrictions, and the U.S. passport dropping in power each passing year—not sure what we’re on about?

Forget the Cozumels, Punta Canas, and Jamaicas of the world.

One of the trendiest Caribbean islands right now actually welcomes Americans without a passport… and before you know it, you’ll be disappearing down a proper Bad Bunny rabbit hole wondering whether moving there full-time is genuinely a terrible idea.

Puerto Rico Is The Most Convenient Caribbean Getaway This Summer

Between Southwest adding more nonstop flights from Florida, to tourism revenue growing 13% year-on-year, it’s safe to say La Isla del Encanto has never been trendier than it is at the minute.

Surely, this might have something to do with Bad Bunny fans flocking there for a DtMF-soundtracked summer, but even if you’re not particularly a huge fan of the Puerto Rican superstar, the sun, Latin culture, and lush coastal scenery is sure to win you over.

Unlike most Caribbean destinations, however, Puerto Rico is accessible to American citizens without a passport.

Sorry to hammer it home like your 9th-grade geography teacher, but as you surely know at this point, the island is an unincorporated territory of the United States.

No, it is not a state, and the fact it has its own flag, and Puerto Ricans themselves proudly claim a distinct nationality and cultural identity probably has you wondering whether you’ve got your facts wrong, but Puerto Rico is every bit as much a part of the U.S. of A. as, say, Hawaii or Alaska are.

What ID Can You Use To Travel To Puerto Rico As A U.S. Citizen?

Voting peculiarities and territorial quirks aside, Puerto Ricans are American citizens, and on an international level, it’s Washington that handles foreign affairs and defense.

This means you can fly to Puerto Rico just as easily as Maui, without carrying an internationally-valid passport on you, so long as you’re able to present one of the following alternatives:

• A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID (the one with the star)
• A U.S. passport card
• A Trusted Traveler card (Globaly Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
• Military ID
• Other TSA-approved IDs (find the full list here)

Naturally, the above only apply to U.S. citizens. If you fly to Puerto Rico as a non-U.S. citizen, you will still need your internationally valid passport.

Traveling internationally has become a bit of a pain now that countries are doubling down on security and tightening entry rules again following the post-COVID travel boom.

Thailand has just cut down the number of days Americans can stay in the country from 60 to 30 days, and if you’re headed to Europe this summer, you might want to prepare for long border delays and airport queues due to mandatory fingerprinting and new EES registration.

If flying abroad to anywhere that’s not PR this summer, do run a little destination check on the Entry Requirement Checker to avoid any issues at the boarding gate.

Going to Puerto Rico, on the other hand, is as breezy as it ever was.

Old World Charm Everywhere You Look

Speaking of Europe, you actually don’t need to fly halfway across the glone to soak up all of that Old World charm:

San Juan, the boricua capital, has all the Old World charm and Mediterranean flair of a Spanish city, minus the fingerprinting and Schengen bureaucracy.

Built by the Spanish upon their conquest of the island back in the 1500s, it is a cobble-paved maze of colonial churches, shaded plazas, and brightly-painted façades that could easily fit somewhere in Andalusia.

It has not one, but two massive oceanfront castles, Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, the kind of typically European landmarks you don’t usually see on this side of the pond, a scenic waterfront promenade in Paseo de la Princesa, which looks just as beautiful as it sounds, and palm-lined streets that somehow never seem to lose their buzz.

Wondering how safe Puerto Rico is to visit?

Due to its U.S. territorial status and unique status under the U.S. Constitution, it just happens to be one of the most stable, tourist-friendly destinations in the Caribbean.

Though risks can never be exactly downplayed, pickpocketing, violent crime, or other kinds of petty crime that plague much of Latin America happen on a significantly smaller scale here, and travelers generally feel safe when visiting.

The island currently scores an exemplary 85 out of 100 on the Traveler Safety Index, indicating strong overall safety conditions for visitors:

The Beaches Here? Stunning.

The Metropolitan San Juan also has some stunning beaches to its name. This is the Caribbean, after all:

Though it’s not an island, per se, Isla Verde sure feels like one, with its long stretch of soft, golden sands backed by skyscraper-high palm trees, beachfront resorts, and laid-back cocktail bars.

Over in Condado, where all the high-rise hotels and nightlife spots are centered, you’ll find more powdery sands, turquoise waves, and beach clubs, and for the snorkeling enthusiasts out there, El Escambrón is known for its coral reefs and calmer waters.

Outside San Juan, the one day-trip you want to make sure you book is El Yunque: this is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, and it’s packed with waterfalls, jungle hikes, swimming holes, and Costa Rica-esque misty mountain scenery.

Time allowing, take a little detour out to Ponce, Puerto Rico’s elegant second city. It has all the colonial charm of San Juan, with Spanish-built plazas, museums, and family-owned restaurants, except it’s much more slow-paced.

Rincón, on the western side of the island, is where you head straight for: think tall crashing waves, beach bars playing reggaetón round-the-clock, and a relaxed surf-town atmosphere that feels more like a Pacific coastline proper than the Caribbean.

Blame it on the ongoing fuel squeeze, or the fact that places like Capri are absolutely buckling under their own popularity, but beautiful, underrated Bari keeps getting criminally overlooked.

Even though… wait for it… Americans can now reach it directly from the States, no layovers needed. Here’s all that Eurosummer bliss you’ve probably been sleeping on.

Fly Direct To Bari From The United States

This summer, Americans will be able to fly nonstop to Bari (BRI), the capital of the underrated Puglia, straight from New Jersey.

That is, from Newark Liberty International Airport.

You’ve got United to thank for that, and as far as frequency goes, there’s plenty of wiggle room: four flights a week each way, and if you book early—before peak-season pricing kicks in—you can snag round-trip fares starting from around $900.

That all sounds pretty tempting, but why Bari and not, you know, Rome or Amalfi?

Though Bari is probably not the first place that comes to mind when you’re planning an Italy trip, it’s genuinely one of the most vibrant, culturally-rich, and affordable destinations you could visit in the country.

And that’s coming from someone who’s spent most of his summers traveling up and down Italy, from the snow-capped peaks of the Dolomites, down to the roughest, untouristy parts of Sicily that don’t typically feature on your tabletop travel brochure.

What sets Bari apart, you ask?

Bari Is Just Downright Gorgeous

Well, for starters, it boasts one of the largest Historic Centers out of any Italian city. Maybe it’s just my impression, but the maze-like layout of Bari Vecchia, with all the winding streets, arched passageways, and hidden piazze is up there with Genoa or Naples for me.

The Coolest Historic Center In Italy

Bari’s Old Town is huge and sprawling, and you could truly get lost in it for hours without ever passing the same orecchiette shop twice.

Speaking of which, did you know Italy’s iconic earlobe-shaped pasta dumplings originate from Bari? All the narrow roads here are beautiful, lined with weathered pastel façades and family-owned trattorie, but if there’s one you should make sure to hit up, it’s Via Arco Basso.

Or, as I like to call it personally, Nonna Street.

This is where you’ll find chatty Italian grandmas rolling up orecchiette on their front porches around wooden tables.

It’s become a bit of a touristy gong show since the TikTok crew caught wind of it, but to someone who knows Italy like the back of their hand, and most of its tourist traps, Nonna Street still comes across as genuinely fun and surprisingly authentic.

Also, if I may add, Osterie Le Arpie, only a few meters away from the street, is one of my favorite Bari Vecchia foodie spots. That’s probably where most of the handmade orecchiette that doesn’t get sold wrapped up in a souvenir bag gets shipped to, and it tastes amazing with some cime di rapa.

To my fellow culture buffs out there, you don’t want to gloss over Basilica di San Nicola.

It’s not the San Sabino Cathedral, but it’s the big one. Romanesque in character, fascinating crypt downstairs, and very atmospheric, particularly at night. By the way, tradition has it that Saint Nicholas’ remains, as in the actual Santa Claus, are interred here.

A massive Old Town square flanked by café terraces, Piazza Mercantile is the go-to spot for people-watching, and as it’s not a European trip until you’ve checked off a fairytale castle, you’ll be glad to learn Bari has its very own Castello Normanno-Svevo, on the edge of the Historic Center.

Sturdy towers, fortified ramparts, and an incredibly detailed medieval history display inside.

Bari Is Cheaper Than Most Italian Hubs Out There

When it comes to prices, I noticed myself Bari was noticeably cheaper than the average Italian city.

Accommodation is already pretty inexpensive, with most modest guesthouses charging between $70 and $90 for an overnight (on that note, check out Moma Urban Stay for good value and modern amenities between the station and Old Town).

Where Bari truly exceeds, though, is food, drinks, and daily life.

It’s not like ultra-cheap like other parts of Southern Italy—hello, Lecce—but it’s definitely below the national average.

Of course, you can go all-out and book yourself a nice little room overlooking the port, and dine at all of Bari’s top-rated haute cuisine spots, but I’d argue that, unlike Positano or Portofino, this is not a city you flash your way through, or brag about how much you spent on a €200 freshly-caught lobster.

Experience Bari as locals do. Go to a bar and get yourself a $1.10 espresso as you watch the buzz of people, and the city coming to life in the early hours, sip on some Aperol by the port for only $4.50 as you munch on fried calamari, and get all the gigantic focaccia you can get your hands on for about $3.

Even if you are treating yourself to something a little nicer, a pasta dinner at a trattoria won’t set you back by more than $22. A glass of wine included.

To sum it up, Bari is gorgeous, affordable, sun-drenched, and on top of that, it’s the gateway to the wider Puglia region, the fast-rising alternative to the now-ruined Amalfi… and you can fly there nonstop. It truly couldn’t be more convenient, hassle-free Italian getaway.

• The Vibe: Over 60% of the island is a highly protected national park. There isn’t even an airport on the island—you have to catch a ferry over from St. Thomas. That extra boat ride acts as the perfect filter to keep the loud, heavy tourist crowds away.
• The Ground Experience: The second you step off the ferry, the noise of the world just shuts off. Instead of giant concrete hotels, you find raw dirt hiking trails cutting through thick, green hills. You can hike down to the water, smelling the heavy salt in the air, and have a massive stretch of white sand entirely to yourself.

2. Sanibel Island, Florida

Sitting right on the warm Gulf Coast, this island is a total magnet for people who just want to unplug and stare at the water. It is heavily focused on protecting nature and keeping life incredibly simple.

• The Vibe: You will not find flashing neon signs or loud, thumping nightclubs here. It is extremely safe, highly walkable, and moves at a snail’s pace.
• The Ground Experience: Nomads spending time down there swear the best way to get around is by renting a rusty beach cruiser. You pedal down flat, sandy paths with the warm wind hitting your face. The biggest activity of the day is the “Sanibel Stoop”—bending over for hours in the shallow, warm surf to dig up perfect, unbroken seashells. It is the kind of place where you wash the sand off your feet with a garden hose and go to bed happy.

3. Kiawah Island, South Carolina

If you take a drive down the coast from Charleston, you will hit this massive, highly protected barrier island. It feels incredibly safe and totally cut off from the real world because it is tucked far away from the busy main highways.

• The Vibe: The environment here feels wild but totally secure. Huge, ancient oak trees covered in gray Spanish moss hang right over the roads, creating dark, cool tunnels to drive through.
• The Ground Experience: Road trippers love the beaches here because the sand is hard-packed. That means you can ride a bike for miles right on the edge of the crashing waves. You can spend the whole afternoon feeling the ocean breeze and spotting dolphins swimming out in the surf, without ever worrying about looking over your shoulder.

4. Marco Island, Florida

Marco Island sits right on the edge of the wild, muddy Everglades. It offers a crazy mix of totally clean, highly secure streets and raw, untouched nature.

• The Vibe: Remote workers love setting up camp here because the crime rate is basically zero. It is a wealthy, quiet community surrounded by thousands of tiny mangrove islands.
• The Ground Experience: The boating crowd absolutely loves this spot. You can rent a small boat, pack a cooler, and slowly weave through the thick, green mangrove trees. Sitting right across the bay from the busy streets of San Diego, Coronado is a sunny, easy-going island town. It has a heavy Navy presence nearby, which keeps the entire area incredibly safe and orderly.

• The Vibe: Solo travelers constantly talk about how safe they feel walking around this town. It has a classic, old-school California surf town energy mixed with upscale charm.
• The Ground Experience: When you drive over the giant, sweeping bridge onto the island, the pace drops instantly. Locals are cruising around on skateboards carrying surfboards under their arms. You can walk down Orange Avenue in the dark to grab some ice cream and feel totally secure. When you finally hit the beach, you can actually see real gold flakes shining in the sand as the freezing Pacific Ocean crashes onto the shore.

One rapidly growing southern city must feel like they’ve hit the jackpot. Not known as a major hub, and largely kept hush-hush as an underrated capital, you might think North Carolinians typically have to fly out of Charlotte for anywhere requiring a passport.

But Aer Lingus opted to give Charlotte the boot in favor of another Carolina city, so they must’ve Raleigh been itchin’ for a trip across the pond.

That’s right — Raleigh just made history, welcoming its first-ever flight to Ireland on April 13.

While you may have missed out on the inaugural adventure, the Travel Off Path team is hoping Lady Luck is on your side with a tax refund, so you can put your hard-earned money to good use with a fun-filled Irish vacation.

Raleigh Quietly Becomes An International Flight Hub

Charlotte and Asheville may want to watch their backs as there are 2 trendier getaways right now in the “Tar Heel State”:

While Charlotte is being touted as America’s new next-level foodie destination, Raleigh has been creeping up the ranks — and there’s no further proof than the surprising amount of international flights in NC’s vibrant capital city.

In fact, RDU will serve Aer Lingus flights to Dublin (DUB) 5 times per week on one of the more spacious narrow-body aircraft, an Airbus 321XLR.

Unfortunately, promotional fares were not mentioned in the official press release.

However, I took a deep dive and found the absolute best deal if Dublin is calling you:

Tickets are pretty hefty throughout summer, but remember, this is only to Dublin and back.

Venturing into other European cities may offer different fares entirely.

So, we did a test.

Since RDU is hoping travelers use Aer Lingus as a gateway just as much as an Irish vacay, we picked Paris as one of their mentioned destinations to see how much it costs compared to Dublin on their cheapest date:

Before diving in to Dublin’s appeal, you’ll want to check entry requirements before stepping foot in Ireland, but the good news is it’s the only EU country not fingerprinting Americans.

Additionally, safety is always at the forefront of travelers’ minds when venturing abroad, but the good news is both Dublin itself, and Ireland as a whole, are considered remarkably safe to explore.

Dublin isn’t just a gateway city — it’s the kind of place you’ll want to linger, especially in the coming months when pub patios spill outdoors, parks turn postcard-green, and event calendars fill up fast!

San Luis Potosí

If you’re not exactly a Mexican history buff—we’ve been to Cancun ourselves more times than we can count, but let’s be honest, that barely qualifies—you should know that Mexico once had a trade route called the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, or Inland Royal Route.

It carved right through the country’s heart, ferrying silver and gold from the mines to the ports. And one of those major mining hubs? You guessed it… San Luis Potosí.

During colonial times, the city’s wealth helped fuel the Spanish Empire’s splendor. But it wasn’t fully stripped of its own shine.

I mean, just look at the cathedral: this Baroque masterpiece towers over a lush central plaza, with the kind of impressive façade and solemn interior you can usually only see in Europe. It’s no wonder they once baptized this part of Mexico ‘New Spain’.

The Historic Center isn’t huge, but its colonial charm hits you from every corner, from the verdant gardens to the stunning 18th-century Templo del Carmen, with its intricately carved main portal.

And if you’re into street food, Mercado Hidalgo is San Luis Potosí’s best-kept secret: a riot of color, flavor, and life, where you can find virtually everything, from farm-fresh produce to local cheeses to grab-and-go regional snacks.

Before you book the next flight out anywhere in Mexico, make sure you check the local safety guidelines that apply at your destination.

Mexico is a big country, and security levels can vary drastically between different regions. Use the Traveler Dashboard to pull up all the relevant information you need at time of departure:

Puerto Escondido

Forget Puerto Vallarta and its fenced-off, all-inclusive resorts and thumping beach bars: for that authentic Mexican Pacific beach experience, head instead to Puerto Escondido.

Straddling the azure coast of Oaxaca, it has that laid-back vibe that’s rare to find across most beach towns south of the border these days, and it pretty much welcomes everyone, from casual sun-seekers, to families, to watersport enthusiasts.

The main attraction here is Zicatela, an expansicve golden-sand beach famous worldwide for its giant waves. No wonder it’s called the ‘Mexican Pipeline’.

This is where surfers flock to for that adreline rush, prior to hitting the downtown bars. Beyond Zicatela, Carrizallilo is that quieter, beginner-friendly spot catering to both inexperienced surfers and regular swimmers, and Playa Bachoco is a must-see for turtle releases.

As for the town itself, by the day it’s pretty mellow, with dusty streets lined with cantinas, surf shops, and fruit stands, but come nightfall, it hums with European backpacker action.

Still, the atmosphere is lowkey, local, uncompromised: most parties tend to unfold at beachfront youth hostels, instead of Playa Del Carmen-style, glitzy beach clubs. Just Pacific moonlight and good vibes throughout.

Fly Nonstop To Puerto Escondido (PXM)

Santiago de Querétaro

Everyone raves about San Miguel de Allende and Mérida, but honestly, neither takes the crown for Mexico’s prettiest colonial city. That honor belongs to Santiago de Querétaro.

With a surprisingly-large Historic Center, criss-crossed with European-esque cobbled lanes, and peppered with centuries-old churches, Santiago de Querétaro is that magical Old World escape… all without the long-haul flight, or fingerprinting required.

If you have no idea what we mean by this, you might want to skip a number of European countries this year if you feel overly protective about how your biometric data is managed.

Back to Santiago itself, a true daughter of New Spain, it’s home to a monumental church and convent complex, the Tempo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo: super ornate, with gilded details, and a richly-sculpted exterior.

Freeport Vs. Nassau: Which Caribbean Paradise Suits You Best?

Nassau portrays the image you’ve likely seen of The Bahamas. You know — Atlantis, a colorful Colonial cityscape, and crowded beaches since most tourists flock here over any other Bahamian island.

Nassau may be the most accessible entry point, but it’s often the priciest, too, if you’re dead set on booking a beachside resort.

Freeport, on the other hand, is what some may call the ‘real Bahamas’, lacking cookie-cutter experiences with more seemingly untouched nature and fewer footprints in the sand.

Think hole-in-the-wall rum shacks, sleepy fishing villages, and wild mangrove-lined coastline compared to the cozy comforts of Nassau, which is more inviting for family vacations.

Freeport also tends to be much more affordable. For example, if you were to book a beachfront hotel in April, you’re looking in the $200 per night range, while Nassau’s rates are often doubled and even have commas on the higher end in highly sought-after Paradise Island.

Where Nassau and Freeport don’t separate from each other is safety. According to the State Department’s last advisory in May 2025, both Nassau and Freeport were both singled out, triggering a ‘Level 2: Exercised Increased Caution’ designation:

Although you do get the five-star enclaves encroaching pristine waters, right next to it there’s real, un-staged daily life: public markets, colorful graffiti, and public beaches, like Caleta, where music is blasting day-round, and Dominican kids play on the sand.

When stepping out of your resort, make sure you grab a cold Presidente in one of the many coffee shops in the vicinity of the main square, sit for a while, and cheer on the fiercely-competitive abuelos in the midst of their domino matches.

Oh, chances are there’ll be bachata buskers around, so make sure you carry a few coins of pesos to tip them.

Is La Romana, Dominican Republic Safe For Americans?

The Dominican Republic is officially considered a Level 2 destination by U.S. authorities, which means Americans must exercise ‘increased caution’ when visiting.

This comes in the form of avoiding suburban zones where crime levels may be higher, bewaring of your surroundings in crowded spaces (e.g. when taking cash out from an ATM in a busy thoroughfare), and avoiding displaying valuable items, like expensive jewelry, in public.

The situation on the ground is even more nuanced: popular areas like Bayahibe and Casa de Campo, where most of the tourist facilities are centered, are usually very safe, with a strong police presence and staff being familiar with foreign visitors.

Bottomline: though crime does exist, it’s unlikely to affect you in downtown La Romana. Nevertheless, do keep a watchful eye for pickpockets and opportunistic robbers.

Roatán, Honduras

Lying off the Caribbean coast of Honduras, just slightly larger than the state of Virginia, Roatán is one of the Tropics’ last-truly unspoiled paradisiacal islands.

We’re talking small, vibrant communities not crumbling under the weight of gentrification, sprawling nature parks, and slower-paced living: less traffic, less crowds, and wild beaches bordered by crystal-clear waters, stretching for miles on end without a single Meliá in sight.

Don’t get us wrong: the infrastructure is still there, after all, Roatán remains one of the most popular ports of call for Royal Caribbean cruises, but instead of larger-than-life resorts, picture rustic, barefoot luxury boutique hotels right on the beachfront.

Oh, and if it’s authenticity you seek, you can’t miss West End Village: the most picturesque settlement on the island, dotted with colorful, palapa-style houses, with the classic thatched roof, and kerb-side kiosks dishing out pupusas and freshly-caught seafood.

Is Roatán, Honduras Safe For Americans?

This is where the lines between official safety advice, and actual risks on the ground start looking blurry a little: if you’re following U.S. advice by the letter, you would avoid Honduras as a whole as it’s been classed as a Level 3 destination.

At this level, travel isn’t expressly discouraged, but Americans must ‘reconsider’ visiting due to higher-than-average rates of crime.

While that’s largely true on the mainland, where gang activity and arbitrary law enforcement are rampant, Roatán is widely considered by travel experts and travelers alike a safe destination.

Even the typically-conservative U.S. Government acknowleges that in the Bay Islands (which include Roatán), there is a larger ‘concentration of resources’, and tourist areas are ‘better policed’.

In short, pickpocketing and theft from rental cars does exist, but let’s face it, you’re highly unlikely to enter Honduras’ murder statistics as serious crime against tourists on the island is rare. The best approach is not to leave unattended belongings and not be the average obvious gringo.

Guadeloupe, French Caribbean

Guadeloupe is a French Caribbean island with a mix of French and Creole cultures, traversed by jungle-clad volcanic peaks, and boasting a whopping 300 miles of coastline, interspersed with tranquil villages, hidden coves, and sandy beaches.

This is what your typical day in Guadeloupe goes like: you basically get a morning rainforest adventure with waterfalls and nature vibes, then switch to classic Caribbean beach mode in the afternoon: think chillaxing on the sand with killer food.

Guadeloupe is, in fact, made up of two main islands: Basse-Terre concentrates most of the volcanic peaks, including La Soufrière, rising 4,813 ft above sea level, waterfalls, and jungle trails, whereas Grande-Terre is where you’ll find those postcard-ready white sands and calm lagoons.

Is Guadeloupe Safe For Americans?

Guadeloupe is an integral part of the French Republic. We know it may be hard to envision, but this means the duo of islands is every bit as part of France as a city like Paris or Lyon.

Guadeloupe citizens are, well, just French citizens, you’ll be paying for your colombos—a traditional Guadeloupéen curry—in euros, and it’s French gendarmerie you’ll see policing the back streets of Pointe-à-Pitre.

Needless to say, Guadeloupe benefits significantly from being an overseas region of a European country, particularly considering the iffy safety levels across much of the Caribbean. In other words, France isn’t exactly keen on letting a chunk of its national territory turn into a drug hub.

Violent crime affecting tourists is almost unheard-of, and even petty theft is not as widespread-an-issue as it is in other Caribbean hubs.

It’s no wonder U.S. authorities have placed Guadeloupe, as well as the entirety of the French Caribbean, under Level 1. This means it’s even safer than mainland France, which remains at Level 2 due to the ongoing threat of terrorism.

Since December 5, 2025, American Airlines has been operating their direct flights from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Curaçao International Airport (CUR), which serves the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao.

Departures are scheduled for 8 AM once a week, every Saturday, up to April 4, 2026. The total flight time is around 5 hours, and the route opens up an entire new world of possibilities for Mdiwest travelers getting to this underrated side of the Caribbean.

If you’ve never been to this of the Caribbean before, you might be in for a bit of a surprise. For starters, Curaçao is a nation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and though it is considered a nation, it’s not exactly a sovereign country.

Its citizens hold Dutch passports, the local governance is Dutch-overseen, and needless to say, Spanish isn’t the lingua franca here: Dutch and Papiamentu (a Portuguese croele language) are the official means of communication, and English is also widely spoken.

Why Visit Curaçao This Winter

That’s one of the many reasons why Curaçao makes for such a fascinating getaway:

Yes, it is irrevocably Dutch, as its own capital town Willemstad would attest, be it the name, of the unusually-colorful Amsterdam-style buildings and canals—but then again, it’s not stroopwafels and soused hering you’ll find sold in markets here, but fresh fruit, cornmeal takeouts, and flavorful seafood.

In a way, it’s the perfect mix of European and Caribbean cultures, and compared to its island counterparts, it’s a lot more laid-back and peaceful in comparison.

It’s A Remarkably Safe Destination

According to the U.S. Department of State, which classes Curaçao as a Level 1 destination, it is very safe, and unlike a majority of Caribbean islands, the robust security doesn’t apply exclusively to resort zones.

Think of Cancun: yes, it’s pretty safe, but only if you’re restricting your movement to the touristy Hotel Zone. We wouldn’t be exactly keen on venturing farther away, into less-developed, suburban areas of the city where gangs typically operate.

Curaçao benefits both from being under the supervision of the Netherlands, a European state known for its low levels of corruption and tolerance to organized crime, and its small size: with a single major settlement, and at only 171 square miles, it’s far easier to patrol.

In general, the biggest threat to tourists in Curaçao is getting pickpocketed, or being victims of other forms of petty theft. That said, these happen seldomly, and are by no means a common occurence across the island, within or outside resort grounds.

What Makes Curaçao Stand Out

Starting May 30, Americans will be able to fly nonstop to Bilbao (BIO) from Newark (EWR), thanks to United Airlines’ ambitious new route expansion in Spain, which includes the first-ever Transatlantic service to Basque Country.

The flight time is 7h30 nonstop, and the route will operate three times per week, on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays:

Santiago de Compostela

More than just the (rewarding) final destination on the Way of St. James, Santiago de Compostela is a major city in northwestern Spain home to a UNESCO-protected Old City, and a monumental cathedral of huge religious importance:

For those who aren’t aware, it is considered one of Europe’s masterpieces as far as Gothic and Baroque architectural styels go, and it’s also said to be the burial site of Saint James the Apostle (hence its status as a pilgrimage hotspot for over a thousand years now).

Fly Nonstop To Santiago de Compostela From Newark

Starting May 22, 2026, United will launch direct flights from Newark (EWR) to Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), marking the first ever Transatlantic service between the U.S. and this particular Spain hub.

Flights will be available three times a week, on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and it will open up a whole new world of possibilites for American travelers headed for the under-the-radar Northwestern region of Spain in 2026:
