We all know St. Tropez for the pastel-colored alleyways that always seem to lead to either a picture-perfect bell tower or charming piazzas flanked by cafe terraces, the scenic beachfront, and, of course, the round-the-clock partying.

Exciting as all of that might seem, we’re not sure about you. We’re not exactly fans of St-Tropez’s crazy crowds, which only seem to get worse each passing year. Once again, this is too small of a town to be hosting millions of people every year—and don’t get us started on prices.

We’re talking $30–$45 per person for a casual meal in a ‘mid’ restaurant, and a whopping $253-a-night for hotels.

But hey, it’s not like St-Tropez is the French Riviera‘s only tourist offer, and for that matter, we know about these 3 (sort of) secret alternatives with both less crowds, and all that Old World charm you’re craving:

Antibes

Let’s get the ball rolling with Antibes, a laid-back town on the shores of the Mediterranean dating back thousands of years, with the same St-Tropez pale-colored palette, cobbled streets, and coastal atmosphere, minus the hordes of tourism.

It’s not like Antibes is a secret destination, either, but it sure lacks the latter’s ‘done-and-dusted’ feel, and that raucous nightlife:

The Old Town is characterized by its Provençal morning markets, where everything from fresh fruit to lavender products are sold, artsy museums, including Musée Picasso, housed in the same waterfront château he used to live, and the peaceful, sandy Plage de la Gravette rarely feels packed.

Moreover, nights here are all about no-frills dinners in family-owned bistros down Rue Sade, in the heart of the Old Town, and romantic strolls along the lamp-lit promenade: it doesn’t get any more quintessentially Côte d’Azur than this.

La Turbie

This one’s for our fellow culture buffs:

Southern France is well-known for its association with the bygone Roman Empire, but while much of the attention is centered around cities like Arles and Nîmes, La Turbie is a much smaller, criminally overlooked village with an equally fascinating ancient history.

It is the proud home of the Trophy of Augustus, a landmark, temple-like structure that dominates the townscape, built in the year 6 BC—and if you climb to the very top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the riviera in the distance.

La Turbie itself has Provence’s typical stone-paved streets, tiny squares revolving around old fairytale wells, and local eateries serving seasonal dishes: Café de la Fontaine and its meat ravioli with spring vegetables are a clear highlight.

As far as beaching goes, La Turbie is situated further up on a hill, so there are no bodies of water in the immediate vicinity, however, Plage des Marinières in trendy Villefrance-sur-Mer is still a short 15-minute drive away.

Biot

Keen on something even more offbeat, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and an unmatched medieval atmosphere? Leave the jam-packed coast and drive the narrow uphill streets to Biot:

If you’re at all familiar with Southern France at this point, you know how it goes: cobblestones and humble dwellings that have been passed down through generations, a leafy main street lined with cozy restaurants and artisan shops, and every imaginable hue of pastel.

St-Tropez may have the Hollywood Golden Age glamour, but Biot is the unsung cultural hub of the French Riviera. It is home to the landmark Fernand Léger National Museum, dedicated to the world-renowned French painter, and numerous art galleries displaying local glasswork.

When strolling around the Old Town, must-see spots are Place des Arcades, a bustling main square ringed by arcaded buildings, the 16th-century gateway to the village, and the Clock Tower, tucked away in a hidden courtyard amidst the maze of winding streets.

Flowers are in full bloom, days are getting longer, and the incessant rain that plagued much of Europe for the past few months has finally ceased, which can only mean one thing: summer is fast approaching, and it’s high time we hit the Mediterranean again.

Needless to say, the bustling ancient metropolis of Rome and France’s sun-drenched south will be teeming with guests this season. Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could just hop on an overnight train in Italy and magically wake up in the idyllic French Riviera?

Starting this July, this will no longer be a fanciful dream, as the Espresso Riviera will make a triumphant comeback:

Rome To The French Riviera Overnight

As confirmed by Fs Treni Turistici Italiani, the overnight Riviera Express will be back on the tracks this summer, offering an affordable alternative to flying for tourists going from Rome to the French Riviera, or the other way round.

We’ve already written about night trains extensively, and how oftentimes, they make for budget-friendly, more efficient options to planes.

For starters, you can say goodbye to the stressful airport commutes, and the 2 to 3-hour wait in between security and getting to your gate: you can simply rock up 10-15 minutes before your train leaves, and it certainly helps that train stations are right in the center of town, not miles out like most airports.

Then there’s the fact that it’s a hotel-on-wheels, after all!

Instead of paying for a hotel and flights, you’ll be combining the cost of accommodation and travel into a single booking—and if we may add, ‘couchette’ tickets on the Riviera Express start from only $48, so it truly doesn’t get cheaper than this.

Which Destinations Can You Get To On The Riviera Express?

The train is scheduled to depart from Rome’s Termini station every Friday, and arrive to the South of France by Saturday morning. At this point, actual departure times have not been divulged, but you should expect it to be later in the evening.

Trains leave Marseille, the French terminus, on Saturday evenings and arrive in the Italian capital in the early hours of the following day.

The nighttime section of the journey comprises the 317 miles that separate Rome from Genoa, a coastal city in northwestern Italy. For maximized comfort, sleeping cars with private compartments or the more economical couchettes are available for the overnight section.

In the morning, the train will change layout, with lounges, and First and Second Class seats, and big panoramic windows so passengers can enjoy the views as they whoosh along the coast in the South of France.

If you’re planning a sunny getaway to France this summer, St. Tropez is likely to be at the top of your list, and we get it: the ocher-colored facades, the turquoise seas, and the perfect combination of traditional French and Southern European cuisine…

You just can’t go wrong with it, except for the surging July crowds and the expensiveness of it all.

Listen, going to this part of France in the peak season, you better have a big budget, and we’re talking $191 per day at a minimum—just check these Budget Your Trip estimates.

But hey, as a budget traveler, you don’t need to feel discouraged from village-hopping around the French Riviera, especially these 4 St. Tropez alternatives:

Menton

The very last stop in France before you reach the Italian border, Menton is often referred to as the most colorful town in France, with its brightly-painted houses on the waterfront, landmark yellow-washed belfry, towering above it all, and plethora of Franco-Italian eateries.

It’s a storybook cover come to life, especially when seen from its rocky jetty, and the best part is, though it is undoubtedly popular, especially as a day trip for Nice residents, and Italians living in Liguria, it has far smaller crowds than a jam-packed St. Tropez.

Beautiful townscape aside, lemon gelato is Menton’s greatest triumph, and you can find it for as cheap as $3 in any gelateria on the marina.

As for a reasonably-priced restaurant, there’s Le Petit Port, serving succulent octopus salads and other fresh seafood, usually under $25.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

Located directly southwest of Monaco, one of the priciest destinations in the French Riviera, you’d think Villefranche-sur-Mer would be equally boujee and cater exclusively to Russian millionaires and yacht owners, like its neighbor, but that’s not necessarily the case.

It has a more laid-back vibe, with a modern coastal promenade lined with brasseries and shops. 

Its Old Town has retained much of that 1950s, vintage vibe: you know, the muted tones, floral arches, and all, except it has none of Monaco’s surging crowds or stuck-up attitude.

A 3-star Hotel la Citadelle will set you back by $175 per night as a couple this May, or an acceptable $87.50 each, and it’s only a few steps from the scenic, sand-and-pebble Plage de la Darse.

As for a dinner spot that won’t break the bank (we’re talking $23—$34) try La Baleine Joyeuse.

Still one of the best tartare beef and fries we’ve had anywhere in France.

Antibes

An ancient resort town founded by Greeks in immemorial times, Antibes is known locally for its walled historic center, which has remained largely untouched since the 16th century, and lively Port Vauban, where luxury yachts usually moor for the day.

It is quintessential French Riviera:

Skinny buildings with green shutters coming in every imaginable pastel hue, bougainvillea-framed alleys, and artisanal ice cream shops specializing in unique flavors—have you even been to Antibes if you haven’t tried Gelateria Del Porto’s glace à la lavande?

Antibes is also incredibly well-placed on the coast, halfway between Nice and Cannes, yet it can feel comparatively quieter as it has not achieved the same level of Instagram fame, not to mention its relative inexpensiveness: renting a private room in a seafront apartment will cost you $91 as a duo.

Porquerolles

Something most tourists don’t actually know is that there is a collective of islands, the Hyères, lying justt off the South of France, and if you’re craving absolute peace, and an escape from the hectic scenes of the Riviera, Porquerolles is where it’s at.

Covering an area of only 4.84 square miles, and with a permanent population of around 200 inhabitants (multiplied by 50 in summer), it is a natural oasis offering secluded sandy beaches bathed by crystal-clear seas—Plage Notre-Dame is easily one of the most beautiful in Europe—and authentic culture.

Its main town, the village of Porquerolles, straddles the tiny harbor, and it exudes Provençal charm:

Picture rows of ochre-tone dwellings, and narrow streets flanked by a handful of locally-owned bakeries and bike rentals.

Porquerolles is tiny, and there is a limited number of accommodation providers on the island, with prices ranging between $286 and a whopping $395 per night.

It’s worth noting, however, that it is often visited as a day trip from Hyères, a town on the mainland, where studio rentals start from a much cheaper $98.

Most travelers jetting off to France have scoped out the Eiffel Tower, world-renowned art museums, and endless sidewalk cafes, but to escape the city grind and sky-high prices, we recently unveiled France’s secret beach on the northern coast as an alternative to not only Paris.

But even as spectacular as this side of France may be, there’s no doubt most travelers have the beautiful Côte d’Azur (French Riviera) atop their travel wishlists.

While I personally loved my trip to Marseille, one of the most sought-after beach cities in France, it’s certainly not for everyone.

The same way travelers can be shocked by how gritty Athens is with graffiti-lined streets just below the iconic Acropolis, the same goes for Marseille, a vibrant seaside city with a delightful waterfront, world-class restaurants, and stunning islands, yet possessing an edgy undercurrent where unsightly spraypaint, dark-lit street corners and alleyways are a turn-off for those thinking they booked a flawless beach getaway.

According to the BBC, those looking for a reliable vacation spot along the French Riviera where you’ll feel safe without the hassle of elbow-to-elbow crowds, should follow in A-listers’ footsteps to a hush-hush peninsula nestled between Nice and Cannes.

Cap d’Antibes: France’s Hobnob Paradise

Other than Cap d’Antibes undergoing an arts renaissance with a fun jazz festival on the docket for summer, among other centennial celebrations, this region of the Côte d’Azur is more well-known as a celebrity haven.

You may know Cannes draws a crowd, especially for Hollywood’s elite, given it hosts the famous Cannes Film Festival each year.

Well, many of these one-percenters find themselves vacationing seaside in Cap d’Antibes at lavish retreats such as BBC-backed Belles Rives, a century-old Art-Deco treasure leading the charge in the region’s artistic festivities this year.

Cap d’Antibes exudes exclusivity, but is perhaps more welcoming to all types of travelers than ever before, as it breathes new life into the arts, enticing more visitors.

While summer is both literally and figuratively a hotspot for celebs, you never know who you’ll cross paths with.

Enjoy Golden Beaches To Yourself: Spring Is The Best Time To Visit

BBC hypes spring as the best time to enjoy a lot more to sprawl out like a starfish on Cap d’Antibes’ golden shores, particular now to early June as temperatures are a blissful 65 – 76 degrees until the official start of summer.

But just know the region surrounding Cap d’Antibes can be a little too breezy any time of year. In other words, it’s a haven for nudists!

Despite the postcard-perfect coastline wrapping the peninsula, you should expect a sight for sore eyes if you don’t do your homework first.

For starters, avoid Batterie Beach and Cape Taillat, unless you want an eyeful of birthday suits — not exactly the beach you wanna be on the “skins” team tossing the ol’ pigskin around.

These are TripAdvisor’s top 5 beaches in the region with no references of exhibitionists:

• Juan les Pins (Main Beach)
• Plage de la Gravette
• Plage des Ondes
• Plage du Ponteil
• Plage de la Baia des Milliardaires

Just note that there is a difference between Antibes, the coastal city (a gem in its own right), and the more isolated and exclusive Cape d’Antibes, tucked away from the more notable cities dotting the French Riviera.

Despite some stunning beaches in the region where beachgoers let loose, they are a small portion of the population, but travelers should be aware of this to avoid unwanted surprises.

The Perfect Base To Explore The French Riviera

BBC named Cape d’Antibes fourth on a list of ‘Nine European vacation destinations to visit in 2025′ and largely because of its exclusivity, going hand-in-hand with prime real estate.

As such, Cape d’Antibes makes for a great base to explore the surrounding area. For example, Metro just highlighted one of Europe’s most beautiful train rides passing through Antibes, Cannes, and Menton, all French Riviera paradises.

Best of all, you can find fares as low as $13 — a steal of a deal in such a lavish destination.

Hotels will surely be your most expensive splurge when staying in Cap d’Antibes, but it’s one of those places where rates match the service and luxury you receive.

For example, if you want to up your chances of bumping into a famous face, check out Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel, a 5-star retreat perched along Les Pêcheurs Beach and home to Michelin-starred restaurant Les Pêcheurs.

Otherwise, a select few boutique hotels nestled between staggering seaside chateaus are much more palatable at rates in the $100s, such as Hôtel Miramar Cap d’Antibes.

Summer 2025 is fast approaching, and if you’re planning to cross the pond at all, the French Riviera is likely to be at the top of your wishlist.

In all fairness, we get it.

Lemon sorbet in Menton, living it up in the Monte Carlo district of Monaco, or even exploring the pastel-colored streets of Saint-Tropez: there’s many a reason why the sun-drenched south, or as the French call it, Côte d’Azur, would live rent-free in your head.

That being said, it’s definitely not the place to go if you’re on a strict budget, or if you hate the crowds: after Paris, Mediterranean France is probably the busiest, and most expensive spot to be in Europe in the peak travel season, but there’s a silver lining here.

Now, should you be looking for some of that medieval charm, a picturesque coastline, and cheaper prices, you should give the much-overlooked Saint-Malo a whirl:

A Fairytale Medieval Port City On The North Coast Of France

A historic port of Brittany, lining golden sands and the azure North Atlantic, Saint-Malo is a historically-significant city boasting a rich history from medieval times to the more poignant, war-ravaged 20th-century.

Even if you’re not a Francophile yourself, who’s out on a quest to tick off every hidden gem of France, you’re bound to have come across pictures of that soaring spire, dating back to the 12th century, rising above a walled maze of aged granite buildings.

Compared to larger French cities like Paris or Marseille, Saint-Malo is teeny-tiny, home to around 46,000 inhabitants, though starting in late spring, that can easily swell up to over 300,000, as families flock there for their summer holidays.

Contrary to Saint-Tropez, or an upscale Cannes, however, you won’t find the same plethora of beach clubs playing thumping music, or beaches dotted with blue-and-white umbrellas: it is far more laid-back, and in fact, Saint-Malo closely resembles coastal towns in Britain.

A Picturesque Sandy Beach Lining The Atlantic

Saint-Malo has its very own expansive sandy strip, Plage du Sillon, characterized by its row of wooden breakwaters and changing tides.

Depending on the time of the day, and when the tide is low, you can even walk up to the Fort National, located on an islet facing the city.

Similarly to England, the beach is flanked by heritage casino hotels, and half-timbered buildings, as opposed to Italy-style, pastel-hue edifices with green shutters, and we’d recommend you bring a casual jumper for the evenings if you intend on dining alfresco.

It can be quite chilly on the waterfront, regardless of season.

Speaking of weather, it is pleasant enough in summer, with temperatures ranging from 64.4°F to 77°F, and on certain days, you might risk getting sunburned if you don’t apply enough sunscreen, but it’s not like it’s scorching hot all summer long.

The water is much colder than the Med, averaging 64.2 degrees, not to mention the ocean here can be a tad unpredictable at times, but if you’re keen on swimming, and you’d rather do so in a more controlled environment, you can always book a spa hotel with a pool, from only $113.

Just keep in mind Saint-Malo is your typical Northern European resort, after all, so if you’re looking to beat the oppressive Mediterranean heat, this is the place to go.

Old World Allure & Mouth-Watering Crepes

Some will seek Saint-Malo for the beach; others are here primarily for the culture.

If you’re a fan of the latter, you shouldn’t miss out on Intra-Muros, or ‘Walled City’, the historic heart of the city, where the streets are paved with cobblestones, and nearly every single building is of a distinct granite color.

Despite Saint-Malo’s medieval origins, these have been largely reconstructed after being devastated during World War II, when much of the city was bombed to make way for the Allied Forces, yet lucky for us, History buffs, it closely resembles what once was.

A must-do if you’re in Saint-Malo in summer is walking the ramparts, that offer panoramic views of both the city, its beach, and the islands just offshore, some of which house military forts.

The indoor market at Halle au Blé, open on Tuesdays and Fridays only, is also a great spot for experiencing the local way of life, and people-watching as French mammies browse the local produce and chat enthusiastically with fishermen.

Maybe you’ll even come home with some Breton butter, or freshly-caught fish, yourself.

Saint-Malo’s most beautiful landmark, however, is Saint-Vincent Cathedral, one of a handful of original granite buildings that suffered minimal damage in the 1940s, and a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles—we’d go as far as saying the rose windows here even rival Paris’ Notre-Dame.

The Old Town’s narrow lanes are also lined with charming crêperies, where you can gorge on delicious ham-and-cheese galettes from only $10, and confiseries selling chocolate-filled croissants and local lollipops, or sucettes, that are still made traditionally in copper cauldrons.

That’s the Old World for you, folks. Everything tastes ancient, even candy.

Oh, and whilst we’re at it, if you’re searching for the best galettes in town, make sure you check out Bergamote, right on cathedral square, and if you’re curious about those lollipops, the ones sold at La Maison Guella has received the distinction of Best Candy of France.

Explore The Northern French Riviera

Brittany is not a one-stop destination:

It is actually known for its string of coastal towns, each unique in character, so if you’re visiting Saint-Malo for longer than a weekend, you should definitely make sure you head out of town to explore the vicinity.

Mont Saint-Michel, over the regional border with Normandy, is an obvious choice: a towering citadel occupying the best part of a tidal island, it is the stuff of dreams, and a short 44-minute drive from Saint-Malo.

Dinan is yet another walled jewel of Brittany, a half-hour drive inland from the coast, and unlike its sister-city, it escaped unscathed from the World War II bombings: every timbered house, and every rampart you see is exactly as it was in the Middle Ages.

Sitting across the bay from Saint-Malo, Dinard is yet another historical Breton town peppered with chic hotels and casinos, and widely-popular for its Plage de l’Écluse, a beach bordered by restaurants with terraces and quirky shops.

If you’ve got your passport on you, you can always take a day trip to the Channel Islands, a collective of British-administered islands that share are linked historically to Saint-Malo (and Brittany):

How To Visit Saint-Malo From The United States

The closest major airports to Saint-Malo are Nantes Atlantique (NTE), a 2-hour drive away, and Jersey Airport (JER) in the British Crown Dependency of Jersey, 1h25 away with the ferry, yet none of those host nonstop flights from the United States.

If you’re flying from Canada, Nantes is still an option, as Air Transat operates a year-round route from Montreal.

For most Americans, however, Paris remains the most convenient hub.

If you’re flying to Paris in the summer, the easiest way to get to Saint-Malo is taking a train from Montparnasse Station.

There are multiple departures per day, and tickets start from as cheap as $49 when booked in advance.
