Americans may not know names like Lumo firsthand, but if you’re planning a trip to the UK anytime soon, it’s one to keep in mind for a grand adventure without denting your wallet.

In fact, it’s safe to say you can venture around amazing UK and Scottish cities for less than a weekend getaway in London alone — have you seen their prices? Yikes!

Lumo is an all-electric England-based train operator specializing in low fares. Their latest route announcement caught the attention of our expert team here at Travel Off Path, so we just had to share.

Having launched in December, Lumo’s new route makes escaping London’s bank-bleeding expenses more enticing than ever now that you can hop aboard a cheap train to discover hidden gems and Scotland’s most renowned cities.

Great Scot! Zoom Across The UK To Glasgow & Edinburgh

Exploring Scotland’s countryside is something that will stick in your mind forever, but don’t become so mesmerized that you skip out of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

While there’s really no wrong place to visit, Scotland’s cityscapes are somehow both nightmarish and dreamy all in one, with eerie gothic architecture looming overhead.

Wandering both of these cities is truly a delight, even if you’re not a history buff or subscriber to Architectural Digest.

Anyone will appreciate the timeless facades and towering cathedrals seemingly plucked from Old World eras, especially Edinburgh’s Victoria Street and Glasgow’s Buchanan Street.

Lumo’s new route is a game-changer given how flying from London or opting for another train can often be pricey, so this will reshape how travelers build multi-city itineraries moving forward.

From London, it’s estimated to take roughly 4 and a half hours to Edinburgh, and another hour or so to Glasgow.

The UK Stops Most Travelers Never See

Beyond London and Scotland’s most sought-after cities, much of the UK is still considered off-path for many U.S. tourists.

Lumo’s latest adventure should change that.

Not only can you visit 3 of the UK’s most gorgeous cities, but you can also go back home with bragging and photos of places they may have never heard of before.

Your first stop is Newcastle, but if you really want to sound like a proper lad, the official name is Newcastle upon Tyne — a perfect topic to stick your pinky out while sipping tea.

This vibrant riverside city may be mostly known for soccer (yes, the real name for the sport 😉), but don’t sleep on its postcard bridges, incredible food and beer scene, and undeniable authenticity compared to London’s hordes of tourists.

Obviously, it’s much cheaper too.

The other lesser-known stopping point on this route is in Scotland too. The town of Falkirk, located in between Edinburgh and Glasgow, is one of the UK’s biggest surprises.

Known for modern architectural marvels like unmissable horse head statues known as The Kelpies, as well as the Falkirk Wheel, if you want to immerse yourself in everyday Scottish life without the hustle and bustle, this is just the place!

Ticket Prices & On-Board Amenities

Lumo is living up to their ‘low-cost’ reputation any way you divvy up this route.

Should you hop on in London and enjoy the full journey to Glasgow, that will run you just $44 on the low end.

Say you spend some in Newcastle and book the rest of the trip from there, those fares start at just $15.

Of course, prices vary for a variety of reasons, but we’ve confirmed these prices do exist for the lowest class.

Unlike budget carriers in the States, you won’t be crammed in like a Frontier flight.

In order from London to Glasgow, here is Lumo’s full route in order from start to end:

• London — King’s Cross

• Falkirk — Falkirk High
• Glasgow — Queen Street

Should you be traversing the UK late spring or summer, keep an eye out for Lumo’s May launch of another London-Scotland route to little-known Sterling, brimming with a timeworn townscape and beautiful castles.

Bacalar: Mexico’s Dream Turned Reality

Let’s start with one you may have heard of, Bacalar — also known as the Lagoon of Seven Colors.

Truly one of Mexico’s most magnificent wonders, this sightly lagoon ticks off every possible shade of blue on the color wheel, hence its ‘Maldives of Mexico’ moniker.

While you won’t find the same level of ritzy accommodations here, that’s all part of the appeal.

Rather than sit on your (likely) overpriced balcony suite praying to all the gods sargassum won’t roll in today, that’s never an issue in Bacalar.

Relax in a hammock with your toes in the water, go for a dip in a pristine cenote, and discover otherworldly formations like rare stromatolites (advised not to touch!).

If you’re up for the most adventurous way to get here, make sure to book a vetted tour guide, as a boat ride here from Cancun can easily top 4 hours.

Though if you ask me, it’s a disservice not to make a stop in nearby Chetumal, one of the biggest surprises in all my travels through Mexico.

Isla Mujeres’ Best Alternative?

Well, Isla Mujeres has to start somewhere, so can the same be said for little-known Isla Contoy?

The Cancun Sun is hyping up this hush-hush island as the “quiet, nature-first sibling” to Isla Mujeres. In other words, it has the DNA to be a big star, but it just hasn’t had its glow-up moment yet.

Truth be told, it may never have had that moment given the stringent rules. Mexico has implemented a daily cap of 200 visitors on licensed tour boats.

But those who have gone out of their way to visit one of Cancun’s least known excursions have been wildly impressed by this nature preserve— literally!

Swap Cancun’s Turquoise Waters For Stunning Pink Lakes

If you thought Cancun had to be the same-o, same-o experience year after year, Río Lagartos & Las Coloradas are here to prove you wrong.

The downside is you’ll have to sacrifice a full day from your itinerary with 7 hours of boat rides round-trip.

The plus side is that both Cancun Sun and we at Travel Off Path give our stamp of approval — it’s definitely worth it!

While we won’t go full Bill Nye the Science Guy on you by explaining the scientific reasoning for bubble-gum pink hues, there’s no denying the lake of Las Coloradas is one of Mexico’s prettiest locales, few tourists seem to know exists.

But in typical American fashion, why not make it a combo? The Cancun Sun also recommends checking out the array of wildlife, including flamingos and crocodiles, at the Ría Lagartos reserve.

Ek Balam: Cancun’s Jungle Gem

Another place popping up on more Cancun vacationers’ radars is Valladolid, and nearby Ek Balam is just the place to beat the crowds of Chichen Itza.

The Maya Train makes it a lot easier to reach, thanks to its Valladolid stop.

Best of all, you can climb the pyramid (referred to as the Acropolis — no offense, Athens!).

While you may have seen viral videos of locals shooing away rule-breakers climbing other archeological sites, Ek Balam is open to the public with minimal rules.

Plus, it’s home to a downright gorgeous cenote for a swim in your own slice of paradise — be wary of crocs, though!

Sian Ka’an Biosphere: Adventure Awaits In Tulum’s UNESCO Site

Tulum’s airport may not have been a resounding hit like it was expected to be, but getting there is still easier than ever, no matter the mixed bag of results.

While still trendy and definitely overpriced in some aspects, Tulum’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sian Ka’an Biosphere, is remarkably uncrowded, with only a small entry fee required.

You can also book personalized or private tours (by request). No matter how you traverse this untamed natural wonder, expect to witness a variety of wildlife such as manatees, dolphins, and exotic birds.

Venture through mangrove canals, snorkel in natural pools, or float down ancient Maya waterways while others wonder if forking over their paycheck was worth being another face in the crowd at their ritzy resort.

Vitoria, Brazil

The mid-size capital to Brazil’s coastal state of Espírito Santo, home to roughly 323,000 inhabitants, Vitoria is a fast-growing city that’s yet to reach Rio’s level of disorderly growth, but that’s far from being dullsville:

It is best known for its wide, long sandy beaches, most notably Praia do Cambria, 16th century Penha Convent, perched on a rocky protuberance overlooking the Atlantic, and slower-paced living, boasting lower levels of petty crime and violence.

As a nomad, you’re expected to budget $1,640 per month living in Vitoria, as per Nomads estimates: rent prices are around 34.6% lower than in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most expensive metropolis, averaging $504 for a downtown apartment, and a restaurant meal will set you back by around $6.

Alanya, Turkey

Antalya‘s less-famous sister, Alanya lies to the east of the world-famous resort, and it’s a smaller, less chaotic, fortified port town centered around a picture-perfect historic center with colorful Ottoman-era houses, and narrow streets covered in cobbles.

Cleopatra Beach is said to have been visited by, you guessed it, Cleopatra herself. The ancient Alanya Castle dates back to the period of Seljuk rule, and there’s even an octagonal Red Tower overlooking a turquoise Mediterranean: in sum, it exudes Old World charm.

Better even, it’s not the kind of balmy, off-season European getaway to break the bank––we’re talking $10 bucks for a simple meal in an inexpensive restaurant, $515-734 in rent (look up Numbeo), and $1,342 in monthly expenses overall.

Agadir, Morocco

A resort city straddling Morocco’s Atlantic Coast, backed by the jaw-dropping Anti-Atlas mountain range, Agadir is an up-and-coming leisure destination Europeans have been flocking to this winter for their sunny break.

Digital nomads, on the other hand, keep sleeping on it despite the fact it boasts pleasant off-season temps, with lows of 56 and highs of 71 degrees, a high concentration of laptop-friendly eateries, where lunch averages $4, and a beautiful hilltop casbah (citadel) overlooking the ocean.

Agadir is also much safer than your average Moroccan conurbation, with low levels of crime and offering residents a higher quality of life without blowing the budget: in fact, you can live comfortably in a waterfront condo, eating out most nights for under $1,713 a month.

San Miguel de Allende

A beautiful colonial-era town in the hinterland of Mexico, San Miguel de Allende is best known for its Instagrammable corners, with cobbled streets and charming plazas flanked by colorful houses, and a pink-washed, twin-towered cathedral.

Something most nomads themselves don’t know, however, is that it can be a great alternative to a bustling Mexico City or an overpriced Playa Del Carmen, with its many laptop-friendly cafes (check out Geek & Coffee), green areas and low criminality.

On top of being historically significant and considerably more peaceful than larger cities, San Miguel is sure to appeal to budget-conscious travelers, who would prioritize keeping their monthly expenses under $2,300 a month (more specifically, $2,332).

Many of us seek out iconic city adventures in such places as Chicago, New York, or San Francisco, but scattered around the country are delightful towns often overshadowed by the grandeur of America’s finest metropolises.

But in the wise words of Michael Scott, “Well, well, well, how the turntables”…

Alaska has seen a strong spike in bookings for places without the crowds and towering skyscrapers in favor of simple down-home fall splendor.

These are the top 3 U.S. hidden gems surging in popularity this fall:

Santa Rosa: Gateway To Wine Country & So Much More

Despite popular belief, Napa is not the only major wine town in California. In fact, it’s not even the biggest in the state.

Lodi may take the cake on that one, but it’s Santa Rosa that has made a name for itself in the wine world and also serves as a gateway into Napa, among other delightful towns nearby.

But let’s stick with Santa Rosa proper, an often overlooked city that’s suddenly been thrown into the spotlight this fall, especially with Alaska’s new flights from Vegas.

So, why visit Santa Rosa other than to go winery-hopping?

The city of 177,000 people is surrounded by beautiful landscapes you can’t help but want to explore.

Take Sonoma Coast State Park ($8 admission) for sample size, where epic coastal views reign supreme over all the ‘leaf peepers’ snapping photos like they’ve never seen a tree before.

Kidding, of course. But, truth be told, this is one of few State Parks this time of year where you’ll forget all about the colors of leaves in place of colors of wines and stunning aqua-blue views.

And don’t sleep on Santa Rosa’s food scene either; it goes way beyond wine!

Check out nearby Michelin-starred French Laundry – so good that California’s Governor Newsom couldn’t resist the urge against breaking his own 2020 lockdown mandates by attending a dinner party here.

Bellingham: Springboard To Vancouver Or Relaxing Hideaway?

Just as Alaska Airlines described, Bellingham is a “hidden gem” nestled on the coast between Seattle and Vancouver, Canada.

Since Bellingham has its own airport, it makes for a relaxing fall escape on its own with astounding nature at your fingertips… or you can scooch across the border for a taste of the city life.

Any way you slice it, you’re in a great spot. You’ll find gorgeous coastal and inland views at such places like San Juan Island and Lake Padden, whichever suits your vibe, and ample ferry rides are provided to reach the various islands off Bellingham’s shores.

Not to mention a charming downtown filled with cozy cafes, scenic parks, and a booming arts scene.

Travel tip: Vancouver is roughly an hour’s drive by car or bus from Bellingham. Make sure to bring your passport and note that Global Entry is not accepted in Canada’s Nexus lanes.

Missoula: This Ain’t Yellowstone

Montana has been hyped up ever since the mega-hit TV show Yellowstone was released. But Missoula doesn’t convey the rootin’ tootin’ cowboy shootin’ image you may have emblazoned in your mind.

Missoula is where college town meets mountainous paradise – a place to bar-hop in the lively University District or relax along the Clark Fork River and dozens of scenic hiking trails.

For the more adventurous, there’s whitewater rafting to tap into your adrenaline rush or come late November, you can hit the slopes just 20 minutes from downtown.
