If France tops your wishlist this summer, sure, you can kickstart your epic trip in Paris, but make sure you pack swimwear and sunblock for the following 4 undiscovered getaways to escape the summer heat:

Saint-Malo: It’s Brittany, Beach!

Oops, we did it again…

We’ve found one of France’s best-kept secret destinations while millions opt for Parisian delights.

Saint-Malo is a coastal port city surrounded by staggering granite walls framing its postcard Old Town, but what’s even more impressive is its beaches. especially Plage du Sillon, where sparkling golden sands, dramatic tides, and fortress views make for the perfect spot to to cool off without fighting Riviera-level crowds.

Located in Brittany, an unsung region of France dotted with waterfront hideaways, Saint-Malo stands out among the rest for its cozy boutique stays, authentic Breton creperies, and springboard access to nearby gems like Cancale, Dinard, and even Mont-Saint-Michel Bay.

Expect temps to hover in the 68 to 77°F range over the next few months.

Belle-Île: France’s Little-Known Island

Truthfully, I’d love to visit this isle, while simultaneously waiting for this paragraph to be over so I can stop misspelling Belle-Île…

This tight-lipped gem many locals keep to themselves is an immaculate hideout with paradisal shores, Monet-painted sea cliffs, and charming port towns where fishing boats bob beneath candy-colored facades.

Belle-Île is also located in Brittany, though we’d argue that going offshore elevates your trip to feel truly rugged, unlike much of France’s claimed coastline of Speedo-wearers and overpriced beach clubs.

Getting here takes commitment, which is likely why it still feels tucked away.

Most travelers first make their way to Quiberon, then hop on the ferry to Le Palais, Belle-Île’s main port, with the crossing taking roughly an hour, but once you’re here, you’ll find yourself in a sun-drenched maze of hidden beaches and astounding nature in between its delightful storybook towns.

While you’re planning out logistics, you might as well double-check travel alerts and tourist fees for your trip.

Honfleur: The Nearest Worthwhile Beach From Paris

History buffs know Normandy for D-Day beaches and World War II memorials, while the French may remember those trying times, they tend to hold a special place as a lesser-known escape to avoid the sweltering heat and summer madness of the Riviera.

Those flocking to Paris may not realize beaches are indeed within close reach — Honfleur being the closest for a day trip at the least.

Lined with half-timbered homes, this dreamy townscape is brimming with waterfront charm and French flair that come together like a real-life painting, but don’t sleep on its main beach, Plage du Butin, where recent reviewers rave about how “gorgeous” it is, along with its scenic walkability from the River Seine.

Deauville: Honfleur’s Neighbor Is Just As Easy To Reach

Along France’s northern coast, Deauville may win the popularity contest.

You may experience more crowds here than in Honfleur, as it’s a popular spot to escape the tourists of Paris for a day or two.

While you may want to keep an eye out for the nudie beach — unless you’re into that kinda thing — there are ample beautiful beaches lined with cozy hotels and epic eats, and yes, people wearing proper beach attire.

It’s rumored there are 450 parasols ready to shade you from the beaming sun, but you may want to wake up early to snag one come summertime.

Last we featured Deauville, it was said by locals that it’s “one of the best beaches in France”.

Of course, it’s France we’re talking about — you gotta roam about town too, as Deauville is chock-full of surprises, including a popular casino and Les Planches boardwalk.

We’re not here to discuss whether climate change is truly humanity’s greatest woe or not, but we guess we can all agree these summers are getting unbearably hotter each passing year…

Especially in the sun-scorched Mediterranean.

Listen, we love a little Greek island hopping and scenic Amalfi drives ourselves, but not when it’s over 90 degrees out and it’s barely 11 in the morning, and that shoddy, overpriced guesthouse you booked can’t even get their AC unit to function.

All of this to say, we might be giving Southern Europe a miss this year.

Instead, we’re heading all the way north, where it’s still cozy and warm to be out in shorts (and maybe a light sweater for when the coastal winds start blowing), but at least you won’t be fighting for dear life under an unforgiving sun, nor increasing your skin cancer risks by twentyfold.

Here are 5 genuinely-cool, both literally and figuratively, Eurosummer spots to check out within the next few months:

Flåm, Norway

• Average highest temperature: 54°F
• Average lowest temperature: 42°F
• Average rainy days in summer: 18 per month

A tiny village in southwestern Norway, located at the innermost end of Aurlandsfjord, Flåm is the unofficial ‘fjord capital‘ of the country.

It’s obviously directly on a fjord, with Nordic-style spas and cute little heritage hotels straddling the water, but what you may not know is that Aurland is only a small branch of the much more vast Sognefjord, Norway’s largest and deepest.

A short drive out of town will take you to Stegastein, a viewpoint that juts out high above the winding waterways, or if you’ve packed your walking shoes, Brekkefossen is a trailhead passing cascading waterfalls and offering the most insanely beautiful mountain views.

Viewpoints and scenic wooden-built hamlets aside, Flåm’s must-do activity is the Flåm Railway:

Rattling up the glacial Hardangervidda plateau, it connects the fjord village to the mountaintop settlement of Myrdal, and it even stops for a few minutes at intermediate stops so you can get the perfect panoramic selfie.

The best thing about visiting Norway this summer? Unlike most of (Western) Europe, it remains relatively safe and low-risk for American travelers.

U.S. authorities officially consider it a Level 1 destination, meaning Americans have very little, if anything, to worry about when traveling around the country, and it currently scores an impressive 85/100 on the Traveler Safety Index:

Certified-safe as Norway may be, there may still be travel alerts applying to different parts of the country, especially this far west in the fjords, where nature and climate conditions is everything but predictable.

That’s why it’s paramount, whether you’re Norway-bound or anywhere else, to do a quick destination check on the Travel Advisory Checker in the days leading up to your departure.

Shetland, Scotland

The Shetland archipelago is Scotland’s northernmost collective of islands, lying some 110 miles from Great Britain proper, and it’s one of the wildest, most remote, culturally-distinct destinations you could visit across the pond.

There are numerous islands to explore, and so very little time, though if you’re flying out all this way, you might want to spend the longest on the Shetland Mainland, or the largest landmass.

It actually feels more Nordic than Scottish in some ways, with treeless landscapes, tiny villages, and huge skies.

Lerwick is the main town and best base to stay, small yet lively, with a postcard-ready harbor, old stone streets, and traditional pubs.

Where the magic truly happens, however, is when you go off-path in one of those quiet coastal roads: regardless of the route you pick, rest assured dramatic coastal cliffs and uncrowded sandy coves await.

Don’t miss Jarlshof, probably Scotland’s best-preserved ancient site. You can walk through thousands of years of history here, with cobbled paths passing prehistoric houses and later remains of Viking forts.

Just word of advice before you book that Scotland island-hopping adventure this summer? The country is part of the U.K., and as of this year, Americans must apply for a travel permit prior to flying.

Gotland, Sweden

Viking Europe’s truly where it’s at this summer, and if you thought peak Nordic heritage was somewhere up in Norway or in the confines of Northern Scotland, you’re in for a big surprise.

For those who aren’t easily discouraged by long, overnight ferry crossings, you can catch a sleeper boat in Stockholm this summer that will take you to Gotland, Sweden’s top summery retreat, home to windswept Baltic nature, picturesque coastal scenes, and the kind of medieval heritage you thought could only possibly exist in storybooks.

Visby is arguably the prettiest historic settlement in the entire Nordics:

Think sturdy town walls, complete with towers and ramparts that still encircle the urban perimeter, cobblestone streets running along quaint wooden townhouses, and church spires that almost pierce the moody cloudy skies.

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and your best bet at soaking up that Old World charm without dealing with the usual Mediterranean heat and the whole cruise crowd chaos of it all.

By the way, it’s not a Scandi trip until you’ve had your fair share of cinnamon buns and Espresso House caramel gold chocolate, people-watching on a sunny terrace. You know, a good old, quality fika time.

Saaremaa, Estonia

We’re keeping it Baltic-local for this one. The largest island in Estonia, an already pretty-offbeat European country you’ve all been sleeping on for years, Saaremaa feels like an even-more lowkey, relaxed Gotland minus the hefty price tags.

It’s also remote, but easier to reach from its parent nation’s mainland—bus from Tallinn to Virtsu port, Virtsu to Kuivastu on Muhu Island, bus or drive from Muhu to Saaremaa via the causeway.

Kuressaare, the main settlement, is one of the nicest little towns in the Baltics, especially around Kuressaare Castle.

Think wooden mills, family-run cafés, Finnish-inspired spas, a beautiful sea promenade, and even a hint of a nightlife without Tallinn’s stag do rush.

That said, Saaremaa’s greatest appeal lies in its verdant, untouched nature.

It has pine forests, juniper fields, smaller villages that have barely seen time go by since the Middle Ages, and Baltic beaches with none of Southern Europe’s crowds.

Just beware of the water temps up here: as inviting as those crystal-clear shorelines may be, this is not some island in Greece, after all.

Gijón, Spain

We know what you’re probably thinking: how could Spain possibly feature on a list of cooler-climate destinations in Europe when it’s the hottest place in the entire continent?

It turns out this may be true for the southern half of Spain, but as for the northern reaches of the country, which are bathed not by the bubbling-hot Mediterranean, or assailed by the occasional Saharan heatwave, it is actually pretty… cool?

Gijón sits on the North Atlantic shore, and it’s maybe not how you’ve pictured your Spanish summers to go like. It’s even better:

Swap the Madrid pastel-hue houses for weathered stone façades, Seville’s touristy tapas bars for local-frequented seafood taverns run by local families and their chatty owners, and Barcelona’s tourist-packed Gothic Quarter for Cimavilla, a historic fishermen district characterised by its narrow cobbled alleys and salt-weathered charm.

Unlike other destinations on this list that lie way too north of the Mediterranean belt to double as proper beach getaways, Gijón actually offers pretty decent weather and swimming conditions in the warmer months.

No, it’s not Mallorca, the water remains gelid compared to your average Spanish coastal hub, but on that odd heatwave day where it’s over 86°F outside, you’ll be glad you can dip your toes in Playa de San Lorenzo’s refreshing, azure seas.

Palm Springs is one of the Golden State’s most iconic destinations, but also one of the hottest come summertime.

But there’s a hidden town that’s trendy amongst the triangle of LA, San Diego, and Palm Springs that locals escape to from these cities to enjoy a relaxing getaway in crisp mountain air and evergreen forests.

No matter the season, s’mores taste just as good over an open fire outside your cozy cabin, rather than an overpriced, flashy resort that most vacationers seek out this time of year.

Idyllwild is just the place to recharge, immerse in nature, and cool off in this rare mild-climate destination, considering it’s over an hour away from the coast.

4) Lake Siskiyou: An Artsy Hideout Nobody Ever Talks About

If you’re craving a pristine lake destination without the crowds, you know Tahoe is off the table.

Lake Siskiyou is truly one of the West Coast’s best-kept secrets. Of course, some unsightly documentaries portraying this region’s countryside underbelly have likely deterred visitors.

But the truth is, those who brave the backroads to reach the Shasta Cascade have nothing but rave reviews.

We’re talking glassy blue water, forested coves, and a staggering backdrop of Mt. Shasta, along with a boho-vibe townscape full of tie-dye shirt vendors and “healing’” crystals.

Yeah, okay…

If there’s one thing you should know, it’s that June is the best summer month to visit, before triple-digit temps take over, though, the lake itself peaks in the 70s, providing bathwater conditions to keep cool.

Plus, this area’s event calendar is jam-packed with fun festivals like Trails End Music Festival and Shasta Mountain Art, Wine, and Brew Festival before July 4th shenanigans take over.

3) Torrance: LA’s Unsung Beach Town

Ever tried to tackle Los Angeles beyond the typical tourist sites?

It’s hard to say where it begins and ends, feeling more like a cluster of suburbs making up one of America’s few actual metropolises instead of a megacity on its own.

Outsiders tend to do as locals do and flock to Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and what’s left of Malibu — but that’s a whole different story.

What you rarely hear about is Torrance, a city known more in the food sphere as SoCal’s “Ramen Capital”.

You might think you heard “slurp’s up” instead of “surf’s up,” but Torrance is actually home to one of the region’s prettiest beaches — and it sees far fewer visitors, even in summer.

Nearby Palos Verdes is a destination unto itself with cliffside trails and lighthouse views, but the entirety of Torrance is full of surprises, whether you’re a foodie like me or craving California sun with more elbow room.

May and June are the 2 worst months to book what you think will be a sunny beach vacay.

But let me tell you what we locals always look forward to as a tourist deterrent, so we can enjoy our own beaches: May Gray and June Gloom.

Hey, I didn’t name them, but they’re official terms used on all local news weather reports as these 2 months tend to see moody weather.

Instead, scope out September for what we dub “local summer” — something fellow San Diegans are probably hating me for revealing.

No matter if you prefer Coronado, Carlsbad, or San Diego proper, May and June tend to bring drab skies, July and August the biggest crowds, and September dies off yet still boasts blissful weather, unlike the humid hellscape of Florida.

For what it’s worth, travelers are ranking safety in San Diego at an 87/100:

1) San Francisco: California’s Coolest City In More Ways Than One

Guess who has cleaned up their act?

That’s right — San Francisco has largely shaken off its sketchy reputation, turning back the clock to become yet again the West Coast’s coolest city (in more ways than one).

Not only is summer cool and breezy from the inland heat, but San Fran also boasts so many vibrant cultural neighborhoods, such as the maze of Chinatown and the Italian cafes of North Beach.

Despite its treacherous hills throughout downtown, you can’t help but want to be outside and explore on foot, although you can hail the city’s signature cable cars whenever an incline gets the best of you — and they will.

Whether its windswept beaches, urban islands, the Fisherman’s Wharf, or lush Presidio Park, now is the time to jump at the chance to experience one of America’s most iconic cities, where finding a bad meal is all but impossible and the magic is easier to find than headlines suggest — as long as you avoid the zombie apocalypse atmosphere of the Tenderloin District.

Sounds dreamy, alright, until you factor in the buzzing crowds, jammed traffic leading to most beach spots, and the AC-equipped room budget alone.

Yep, there’s no way you can survive in the Southern European heat without it, and those don’t come cheap in all of the trendiest coastal destinations.

If melting under 95 degrees, spraying sunscreen all over yourself every 2 hours, and gasping for air every 10 steps up the next hilltop panorama doesn’t sound like your idea of fun this year, we have good news for you: there’s a cooler, much-milder European summer in Central and Northern Europe.

Here are 5 alternatives to the Mediterranean humdrum that won’t leave you fried, dehydrated, and facing an imminent skin cancer risk in your early 40s:

Inverness, Scotland

The quiet, unassuming capital of the Scottish Highlands, Inverness is still largely undiscovered by most UK-bound tourists, which is a shame, because it could easily step right out of a storybook.

Perched on the northern shores of Loch Ness, the mystical lake said to harbor a serpent-like monster, the city boasts a gorgeous historic castle overlooking a café-lined waterfront, lively shopping streets flanked by Georgian buildings, and charming little corners made for wandering.

Inverness is rather rainy and breezy year-round, even in summer, so pack a light rain jacket. But the good news? Even if it starts “pissing down,” as the Scots say, it’s rarely for long. Sunshine, and often a beautiful rainbow is likely to follow the Northerly downpour.

The hottest it usually gets this far north in Britain is around 65°F, dropping to 50°F in the evenings.

A short 30-minute drive brings you to Urquhart Castle, one of Britain’s most scenic castle ruins, right on Loch Ness’ shores. Even closer, just 15 minutes out of town, the Culloden Battlefield marks the historic 1746 Jacobite uprising.

Venture a bit further, and the Cairngorms offer hiking paths and stunning forested scenery. For a full-day adventure, roughly 3 hours each way, the Isle of Skye is Scotland’s ultimate island escape, complete with fairy pools, towering waterfalls plunging into the ocean, and romantic castles.

The U.K. and Europe in general have recently changed their entry rules for American tourists, and this includes Scotland. Bringing a valid passport to the airport is no longer sufficient to be allowed boarding in UK-bound flights.

Tignes, France

One of the highest settlements in Europe, perched on a glacial plateau about 3,030 meters above sea level, Tignes is basically the top move if you want to escape the summer heat in July. Think daytime highs around 62°F and nighttime lows near 40°F.

Aka perfect “I can finally wear a jacket again” weather.

It’s best known in winter for its winding red pistes and reliable snow, but in summer, the whole place flips into a hiker’s and biker’s paradise. You’ve got well-marked trails leading to uncrowded, crystal-clear lakes, wildflower-covered slopes, and ridiculous views of snow-capped peaks in every direction.

The Vanoise area is packed with 40+ bike trails, ridgelines, and alpine routes, and honestly, that’s probably the main reason to go in summer. Riding through all that lush green scenery with the Alps looming in the background is kind of unreal.

And even if you’re not exactly trying to break a sweat, you can still get the full alpine experience. Just hop on the “Snowpiercer” funicular from Val Claret, the highest part of Tignes, up toward the Grande Motte glacier.

The views are straight-up magical, and there’s a very deserved apéro waiting for you at the top.

My favorite part about Tignes? It’s considerably safer, more family-oriented, and a higher-trust society than what Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and most French powerhouse cities have become. None of the scamming, street violence, or low security levels.

You’re not just breathing fresh, crisp mountain air. You’re actually breathing unbothered.

How Dangerous Is Paris Right Now?

Åland

Autonomous Territory Of Finland

If you’ve read our recent article 4 Of The Weirdest But Also Coolest Places To Visit In Europe, you probably know by now we have a soft spot for the odd geopolitical anomaly.

Åland is an island that lies off the coast of Sweden, and given a majority of the residents proudly identify as, and speak Swedish as their mother language, you’d expect it to be part of the Scandinavian kingdom… right?

Wrong answer. Finland is the sovereign power here.

Though Åland enjoys a high degree of autonomy, being responsible for its own government, education, and internal affairs, it’s officially part of Finland, and Finnish citizenship applies.

It’s also an island in the middle of the icy Baltic Sea, so you might want to give it a miss right now if you hate strong winds and gray, moody weather; this probably isn’t the right time to go.

In summer, though? Completely different story: when the sun shines, it turns into a paradise for biking, with flat, easy cycling routes, and it’s probably Europe’s most underrated natural getaway, from the red granite shores to the castle-dotted pine forests inland.

Mariehamn, the small but charming capital, is ridiculously cute, with its colorful, chalet-style wooden townhouses, and that classic sea-then-sauna combo that’s just the ultimate Nordic flex.

Weather-wise, you’ll still want to pack at least a few sweaters, because even in July, the hottest it usually gets is around 67°F.

Kristiansand, Norway

Sticking to the Nordics, you probably know by now that Norway is the go-to destination for escaping the heat, but tourists usually flock to Oslo, Bergen, and the Ålesund fjords up north. Let’s face it: you don’t want Italy’s blazing sun, but you also don’t want to be freezing cold on your one year summer getaway.

In that case, the picture-perfect Kristiansand is the top pick. Highs: 66–72°F. Lows: 52–57°F.

It has the postcard-ready harbor, the white wooden houses flanking narrow cobbled streets, particularly around the Posebyen district, and the unrivaled café culture you can only dream of in America. Craving those fluffly, sugar-sprinkled Norwegian cinnamon buns?

Check out Raccoon right in the heart of town.

In sum, Kristiansand is one of the easiest, prettiest, most chill summer cities in Norway, and the fact it straddles the southern coast makes it that much sunnier than your average Norwegian port town. Brits have Brighton, the French have Nice, Norwegians have Kristiansand.

Additionally, it is a perfect gateway to the Sørlandet Coast, known for its coastal skerries and little islands, sandy beaches, and laid-back coastal charm…

But no tall, epic fjords like Sognefjord or Geirangerfjord.

For that, you might want to head farther north.

Check Travel Rules Before Flying To Europe This Summer

By the way, if you’ve been reading the news lately, you probably know Americans will start getting fingerprinted when traveling to Europe this summer.

A big misconception among tourists is that this only applies to the European Union, of which Norway is not a member.

Wrong. It applies to all countries within the Schengen Zone, in which Norway participates.

If you’re heading to the Scandinavian country in the near future, make sure you double-check the latest entry requirements that apply on the date of your arrival here.

Groningen, Netherlands

What most travelers don’t know is that they don’t necessarily need to go to the ‘Dam, and elbow their way through the maddening crowds, or choke in a haze of skunk smoke, to experience Dutch culture… nor suffer through the Paris and Rome heat.

Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands, is a much better pick.

Still big enough of a city, with a thriving uni student scene, your usual mix of downtown bars and nightclubs, yet at the same time, quieter, more local, and definitely not as tourist-saturated as Amsterdam’s Red Light District or packed museums.

You’ll be wandering in short shorts and a light jacket along gorgeous canals, admiring traditional Northern Mannerist houses, with their slender figures and stepped roofs, and hidden courtyards, and it will rarely ever be warmer than 70°F, or colder than 55°F.

It’s definitely not hot enough for beach-level sunbathing, but ideal for cycling, Old Town strolls, and chill café terrace moments.

Don’t miss Martini Tower, the big, medieval bell tower towering above the maze-like center: you can climb it for panoramic views of town and its verdant countryside.
