Is it just me, or has all this talk of “hidden gems” and “undiscovered spots” become a bit too… trivial, if not outright nonsensical?

Whether they’re doing it for the Instagram algorithm or simply because they’re clueless enough to think an extremely popular European city that’s been flogged to death can still fit that criteria, it’s all getting a bit comical.

First of all, if every single secondary, mid-size city American TikTokers stumble upon is a “hidden gem”, then by default, nowhere is. We get it, they’re usually ping-ponging between Paris and London, and anywhere else amounts to a great off‑path adventure, but come off it.

Secondly… Marseille? As in, France’s huge Mediterranean port city of Marseille?

This is really how far we’ve come in terms of lazy, poorly-researched, AI-spun travel writing?

Why Marseille Is Anything But A European Hidden Gem

I couldn’t believe my own eyes when I came across a bunch of articles, churned out by some major publications this year, crowning France’s second-largest city and a major cruising hotspot as Europe’s most criminally underrated coastal getaway, or a “top hidden gem”.

Marseille and crime do go hand in hand, but criminally underrated? Not so sure about that.

A metropolitan zone home to over a million people, wedged between Mediterranean massifs and the turquoise sea itself, Marseille has been France’s most important port for over 2,600 years.

Not that an iPhone-wielding, beret-clad influencer in her flying dress would know that, nor one of those big-brained journalists with degrees, apparently… but anyways, I digress.

Marseille hosts on average 5 million tourists per year, and it usually ranks third or fourth in France for popularity, behind Paris (30–35 million), Nice (5–7 million), and either tied with/or directly below Lyon (roughly 5 million).

In terms of cruise passenger traffic, it places third after Barcelona and the Balearic Islands.

Slapping the ‘hidden gem’ tag on Marseille is as ludicrous as calling, I don’t know, Los Angeles a secret coastal village. While we go around in circles in these useless discussions, everyone’s forgetting to ask the most important question.

What exactly sets Marseille apart from other French cities, if it can’t be anonymity?

If Marseille Is Not A Hidden Gem, Why Are They Labeling It One?

Well, it’s the fact that it’s not the sanitized, over-polished, Disney-fied France you know from the movies, and this is enough nowadays for a ‘Hidden Gem’ tabletop travel brochure seal.

It’s a city that lives and breathes at its own frantic pace, doesn’t care if you can’t quite keep up, and certainly doesn’t slow down to make itself more palatable for visitors.

If you’ve been to the French Riviera before—the “Nice‑r”, Turkey-teeth, Rolls Royce side of it—you should know Marseille is a different flavour of the Med altogether.

Out with the Côte d’Azur’s invitation-only beach clubs and star-studded, roped-off oceanfront; in with wild, rugged calanques and a beach-interspersed Corniche where everyone’s welcome for free. It looks messy, ‘foh shoor‘, to quote our darling President Emmanuel Macron, but it feels inequivocally democratic:

The Vieux-Port, or Old Port, is Marseille’s organized chaos personified: think cafés and seafood restaurants right on the water, fish markets, buzzing streets where no one seems to give a, hem, flying flamingo about road signs, and motorcyclists and cars instinctively weaving around pedestrians.

Because that’s the way it’s always been, and how it always will be.

Of course, the Vieux-Port is the heart of Marseille’s fishing scene, and where you can find some of the heartiest Marseillaise fish stews in town, or, as locals call it, bouillabaisse*. You haven’t been to Marseille until you’ve had one of these.

That said, portside eateries can be on the pricier end, but if you’re after a smaller, less‑flashy, local‑frequented alternative, try Chez Michel on Rue des Catalans.

If Unapologetic Was A City…

Bordering the port, Le Panier is Marseille’s Italy-like, hilly ‘Old Town’ area. It’s the city’s oldest neighborhood, with centuries upon centuries of Greek, Italian, and North African immigration woven into its multicultural tapestry.

The narrow streets, slender pastel buildings, and trattoria-style eateries, which often carry Italian family names, are a clear reflection of the historic Genoese presence in the area.

Le Panier is also full of galleries, colorful (and thought-provoking street art, and artisan shops, except unlike in other parts of Provence, all those beautiful historic edifices you see haven’t been fully converted into Airbnbs.

You’ll likely hear livid marseillaise moms having a right go at their kids behind green shutters, come across mischievous groups of 15-year-old frérots skipping school, vaping in the square, away from their parents’ watchful eyes, and kerbside bars with terraces that spill onto the cobbled alleys where French voices are louder than English ones.

In sum, yes, it is a little rough around the edges, and there’s a lot we could say about the cleanliness and general upkeep of the place, but you can’t deny it feels brutally authentic and lived-in.

This Is Not Paris.

This brings me to my next point:

If you come to Marseille expecting a perfectly manicured Old World movie set, or you don’t know how to keep your wits about you in densely populated areas known for their high rates of pickpocketing—higher than Paris, even—you’ll leave either terribly disappointed, or worst case scenario, without your phone.

As you get off the train in Gare Saint-Charles, you’ll be a few steps away from an African-dominated Quartier Saint-Michel, with its lively ethnic markets, Maghrebi-style bazaars, and pedestrian chaos.

Some love the multiculturalism, some deplore it, but one thing both sides of the discussion agree is that pickpocketing, poverty, and littering are rampant problems in Marseille’s central area. I tell you this not to put you off visiting Marseille—you should definitely go and check it out for yourself—but so you don’t parachute here completely unaware of what you’re getting into.

The same applies to artsy, hip districts like Cours Julien, a local youth hotspot packed with cafés and quirky shops. They’re touristy and, for the most part, safe, though only if you’re conscious of your surroundings and can keep flashy jewelry at home.

For the umpteenth time, and for the love of God, this is NOT Nice.

This city is raw and has no intention whatsoever of polishing up anytime soon.

Gorgeous Haussmann-era buildings covered in graffiti, traffic is heavy, and the urban problems are very real. There’s even this old Provençale joke that goes like: après Gare Saint-Charles, c’est Alger!

It literally means that, once you pull up to Marseille Central Station, you’re basically in North Africa.

The Sea Is Marseille, And Marseille Is The Sea

There are a few more things that make Marseille the black sheep of the French family.

Its cathedral, the imposing La Major, is not Gothic or Romanesque in character, but a striped green-and-white Neo-Byzantine stonework. None of Notre-Dame de Paris’s solemness, ribbed-vaults, and rose windows: this one has bold mosaics, marble chapels, and a much larger nave.

Marseille’s most iconic religious building, however, isn’t its actual cathedral:

By the time you’ve strolled around the Port or Panier area, chances are you’ll already have spotted it from a distance:

Notre-Dame de la Garde sits on a limestone hill 162 metres above sea level, and it’s known for its golden statue of Mary, placed at the top of the tower, maritime-themed decorations, and ship models that are displayed along walls and hanging from the ceiling—offered by sailors asking the Virgin for protection ahead of a voyage.

Marseille’s cultural identity is forged by centuries of seafaring and trade between clashing civilisations: the sea is as vital to the city as the city is to the sea.

So, I don’t know, maybe the French (as well as Europeans in general) would find the idea of Marseille being a lesser-known destination like some minor Mediterranean hub in the league of Albania or Montenegro, which actually belong in this category, laughable.

Marseille Is Just The Latest Victim Of… Hidden Geminification

The way I see it, this “hidden gem‑inification” phenomenon tells us more about certain news sources’ desperate need for clicks through absurd claims—especially when targeting wide-eyed travellers yet to visit Europe, who’ll swallow their every sensationalized word like it’s gospel—than the actual destinations they’re banging on about.

You wanna call Marseille underrated? Fine. Have a go at it.

There is an argument to be made for underappreciation here, without resorting to the usual over-the-top, hyped-up rhetoric.

But you better have the on-the-ground knowledge to back it up, or you might just end up sounding like an utter… hem… excuse my French… cagole.

Exploring Scotland’s countryside is something that will stick in your mind forever, but don’t become so mesmerized that you skip out of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

While there’s really no wrong place to visit, Scotland’s cityscapes are somehow both nightmarish and dreamy all in one, with eerie gothic architecture looming overhead.

Wandering both of these cities is truly a delight, even if you’re not a history buff or subscriber to Architectural Digest.

Anyone will appreciate the timeless facades and towering cathedrals seemingly plucked from Old World eras, especially Edinburgh’s Victoria Street and Glasgow’s Buchanan Street.

Lumo’s new route is a game-changer given how flying from London or opting for another train can often be pricey, so this will reshape how travelers build multi-city itineraries moving forward.

Well, Isla Mujeres has to start somewhere, so can the same be said for little-known Isla Contoy?

The Cancun Sun is hyping up this hush-hush island as the “quiet, nature-first sibling” to Isla Mujeres. In other words, it has the DNA to be a big star, but it just hasn’t had its glow-up moment yet.

Truth be told, it may never have had that moment given the stringent rules. Mexico has implemented a daily cap of 200 visitors on licensed tour boats.

But those who have gone out of their way to visit one of Cancun’s least known excursions have been wildly impressed by this nature preserve— literally!

Swap Cancun’s Turquoise Waters For Stunning Pink Lakes

If you thought Cancun had to be the same-o, same-o experience year after year, Río Lagartos & Las Coloradas are here to prove you wrong.

Plus, it’s home to a downright gorgeous cenote for a swim in your own slice of paradise — be wary of crocs, though!

Sian Ka’an Biosphere: Adventure Awaits In Tulum’s UNESCO Site

Tulum’s airport may not have been a resounding hit like it was expected to be, but getting there is still easier than ever, no matter the mixed bag of results.

While still trendy and definitely overpriced in some aspects, Tulum’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sian Ka’an Biosphere, is remarkably uncrowded, with only a small entry fee required.

You can also book personalized or private tours (by request). No matter how you traverse this untamed natural wonder, expect to witness a variety of wildlife such as manatees, dolphins, and exotic birds.

Venture through mangrove canals, snorkel in natural pools, or float down ancient Maya waterways while others wonder if forking over their paycheck was worth being another face in the crowd at their ritzy resort.

Thinking of attempting a late-season escapade to the Mediterranean, but the jarring sight of surging crowds in places like Rome, Santorini, Mallorca, and Dubrovnik keeps putting you off? It’s October, and they should have subsided by now… right? Right?

Sadly, high and low seasons are no longer concepts that can be applied in certain destinations, and most definitely not in sun-drenched Southern Europe, where it’s warm well into late October.

Although you will get merely a small fraction of the summertime chaos, this does not mean it’s exactly peace and quiet that awaits you, unless you head out to one of those emerging destinations very few travelers have caught wind of.

Perhaps it’s time you look further than the touristy spots yourself, and finally give this beautiful Mediterranean island which has never received its due recognition a chance:

Croatia’s Last True Hidden Gem

Vis is a small island in the Adriatic Sea, off the Croatian coast, that’s garnering quite a bit of traction lately since it featured on Intrepid Travel‘s ‘Not Hot’ list.

In other words, it’s been handpicked by some of the industry’s best-reputed travel experts as an up-and-coming destination for the year ahead, as one of only 3 European destinations to make the top 10—and may we add, the only one where the sun is still on full-blast right now.

Located only 30 nautical miles southwest of the bustling port city of Split, Vis is best known for its unspoiled landscapes, which, unlike the Dalmatian mainland, have not been tarnished by mass tourism. The island boasts tranquil beaches and the absence of huge crowds.

It has a population of around 3,000 inhabitants, and none of Split’s crazy nightlife, or trendy beach bars you can’t get into unless you’re dressed to the nines.

If you’re coming to Vis, you’re drawn instead to the ancient culture, the gastronomy, and the local wine, that is meant to be savored slowly, like most things there.

A Fairytale Medieval Capital

Vis’ main settlement, and administrative capital, is Vis Town, a beautiful port town still surrounded by ancient city walls and peppered with family-owned taverns and impressive medieval landmarks.

Levaman Fortress, on the edge of town, is home to the local Archaeological Museum, where you can browse through a collection of items dating as far back as the 4th century B.C. (including a bronze head of the Greek goddess Artemis).

A short walk from the harbor area, where some of the best seafood restaurants are located, you’ll also find a Roman theater built in the 1st century AD. Nearby, a Romanesque St. Jerome’s Church stands, featuring a solemn interior and beautiful stained glasswork.

Vis Town itself is a maze of cobble-paved alleys you could get lost in for hours, and that alone is worth the day trip from Split, but we’d strongly encourage you to prolong your stay here. As we pointed out previously, this is not somewhere you want to rush through.

Beautiful Coves & Mountain Views

Beyond Vis Town, you’ll encounter a plethora of secluded coves, natural vistas, and even a handful of World War II sites that don’t typically feature in your travel brochure, and for that, you’ll need more than a single day trip.

Stiniva Cove, a 20-minute hike from town, is considered one of Croatia’s most beautiful beaches, framed by dramatic limestone cliffs, and with fine pebbles lining what’s perhaps the clearest waters in the entire Adriatic.

Over at Srebrna Bay, a 2-hour walk from Vis Town, along winding coastal roads lined with sky-high cypress trees, and to the sound of singing cicadas, more pebbles and turquoise seas await, though if you’re hoping for golden sands, Stončica Bay is where you should be headed.

A rare example of a largely sandy Croatian beach, it only has rocks and pebbles along the edges and parts of the shoreline, and the small lighthouse nearby makes it a particularly scenic spot for an early-afternoon swim.

Explore A World War II Hideout On A Mountaintop

Bit of a History buff, are ya? You’ll be thrilled to learn that Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito hid in Vis during World War II, in a cave situated atop Mount Hum, the highest point on the island, rising at 587 meters.

The bunker-like hideout can now be visited for free, though it’s a bit of a challenging uphill trek up there, lasting for around 2 hours if Vis Town is your starting point.

Even though it’s not summer, and no longer scorching hot, with temps averaging 71 degrees most days, make sure you bring your water bottle, and apply plenty of sunscreen, as you can never underestimate the blazing Croatian sun.

Discover Charming Komiža

For a gentler activity that won’t involve much physical effort, we recommend you take a local bus to Komiža, a tiny village some 12.4 miles from Vis Town featuring a picturesque harbor, narrow cobblestone streets, and traditional stone houses.

If you’re coming for lunch or dinner, just know Konoba Jastozera serves a killer lobster pasta.

Last but not least, to all our fellow oenophiles, Vis accommodates a number of family-run wineries producing indigenous Dalmatian wines. Sampling tours are offered in Plavac Mali and Vugava, and they cost between $60–$130 per person, depending on duration, group size, and number of estates visited.

How To Get To Vis This Fall

The best part is, unlike most of Croatia, and particularly tourist-packed cities like Split and Dubrovnik, Vis remains largely crowd-free.

In 2024, it welcomed around 28,000 visitors, in stark contrast with the mainland, which often hosts tens of millions of guests.

This makes Vis one of Croatia’s least-visited islands, especially compared to the trendy Hvar, which attracted over 195,000 visitors in the same period.

Vis is accessible by ferry from Split, and the crossing takes approximately 2.5 hours. Tickets start from as low as $15.

Overlooked by Europe’s household names such as Paris, Barcelona, and Athens, too many travelers overlook Scandinavia, a sprawling region teeming with hidden gems.

Unlike Scandinavia’s frigid reputation, you might be surprised to see wildflower blooms, sun-kissed beaches, and splendid weather warm enough to tap into Sweden’s Fika lifestyle on a cozy cafe patio come spring.

While I can personally attest that places like Paris and Athens are awesome cities, I’ve found myself exploring Scandinavia over and over again, having visited Oslo three times and most recently checking Stockholm off my wishlist.

But there’s another Swedish city gaining steam. In fact, according to a new report, it’s one of Europe’s most sought-after cities for a spring vacation, offering visitors astounding coastal scenery, sensational food, and well-preserved centuries-old history.

New Hype For Gothenburg: Europe’s Most Underrated Spring Getaway

According to Expedia, the secret is out on Gothenburg. Seeing a 410% surge in interest, more travelers are skimping out on Eiffel Tower crowds and overhyped islands in favor of the lesser-known.

The only downside to Europe’s treasure trove of hidden gems is it takes a bit of extra effort to reach as it’s mostly just major cities directly connecting to U.S. airports.

But Gothenburg is an exception as it’s an easy train ride from 3 easy-to-reach Scandinavian cities:

• Oslo
• Stockholm
• Copenhagen

Adding to your adventure, who wouldn’t want to take a scenic train through Scandinavia? From the cities listed above, you can reach Gothenburg in roughly 3 hours by train.

Travel Tip: Norse Atlantic Airways is a budget airline based in Oslo and flies to multiple U.S. cities, but just be aware staff measures ‘Personal Item’ luggage to the nth degree. It’s the strictest budget airline I’ve ever flown.

Amsterdam Vibes Without The Karens

Unlike Amsterdam, Gothenburg knows it’s a cool city and doesn’t yank the welcome mat away from tourists on arrival.

And like Amsterdam, this beautiful city is lined with Dutch-style canals perfect for a nice stroll to get a feel for the city or you can even book a scenic boat tour along the canal or further out to quaint fishing villages and staggering cliffs worthy of a postcard.

Despite United canceling the lone direct U.S. flight here, making the trek to Sweden’s ‘second city’ is well worth cashing in your vacation days this spring.

Now that winter is coming to a close, expect Gothenburg’s lush parks to illuminate with wild blooms, where cherry blossoms tend to pique visitors’ interest the most at Trädgårdsföreningen…or as tourists prefer to call it, “The Garden Society”.

Additionally, Gothenburg has a buzzing arts scene with quirky installations set up for selfies throughout the city and some intriguing museums as well, such as top-rated Gothenburg Museum of Art (only $7 admission).

Gothenburg is a delight to wonder during the day because you never know what you’ll stumble upon exploring the timeless cobbled streets and hidden alleyways nestled between varying colored buildings in the Haga district.

Come sundown on weekend, though, don’t sleep on Gothenburg’s nightlife where Victorian era-themed Steampunk Bar is a must!

“Fika” & Food: Discover Delightful Cafes And An Array Of Local Seafood

If you’re like me and need at least 2 or 3 coffee breaks per day, then Sweden is for you.

The concept of “fika” is engrained in Sweden’s culture, where locals make time to enjoy the little things in life, like a perfectly crafted coffee and fresh-baked pastry with a friend, or embrace some downtime in solitude.

There’s no shortage of cafes in Gothenburg. The only problem you’ll have is picking one, but Da Matteo seems to be a favorite on many-a travel blogs from recent visitors.

You’re probably thinking winters in Europe are all about cobbled towns enveloped in mist, cozy Christmas Markets, and snow-clad landscapes, and while that’s certainly true for Prague, Edinburgh, and the like, this hidden island doesn’t seem to have got the memo.

As a matter of fact, it seems like it’s forever stuck on spring, with highs of 68°F and lows of only 66°F in winter, plenty of sunshine hours, and very, very limited rainfall––as for snow, it’s an unheard-of phenomenon.

If you’re craving some of that Old World culture, but you’re also craving that vitamin D boost, El Hierro in Spain is the answer to your prayers:

A Forgotten Gem Of The Atlantic

The second-smallest and most westerly of Spain’s Canaries, an archipelago lying off the coast of Africa, El Hierro is a laid-back island sized 103.67 square miles that makes up for its relatively small landmass with a thriving nature.

It is definitely not the side of Europe you may be expecting, with the medieval castles and storybook towns, with unique geological formations, ancient forests, and breathtaking volcanic landscapes taking center stage.

Charco Azul, a natural pool formed by a lava flow and filled with unusually clear, turquoise waters, is one of El Hierro’s most famous landmarks: it’s a popular spot for swimming, and there are no entry fees, though the nearby cafe will charge €2 for the toilet.

A symbol of El Hierro, El Golfo is a valley resulting from a powerful eruption thousands of years ago and shaped like an amphitheater––even when nature is the prevailing force, you just can’t escape Europe’s omnipresent culture.

The moderately challenging uphill trek to Mirador de la Peña is a must-do, not only for the breathtaking views that await at the very top but also for the stone-built Restaurante Mirador de La Peña, serving traditional Canarian food in a scenic setting.

UNESCO-Protected Laurel Forests & Pristine Beaches

Other natural wonders include El Sabinar, a row of twisting and bending juniper trees that have somehow survived the harsh environment, Charco Manso, yet another natural pool, shielded by basalt rock and distinguished by its picture-perfect arch, and Laurisilva:

Similarly to the other Canary Islands, El Hierro is mostly arid in nature, but at its very center, the moss-covered laurel maze is a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering refuge to Canarian wildlife and crisscrossed by hiking trails.

As for beaches, El Hierro doesn’t have the expansive sea dunes both Tenerife and Gran Canaria are famous for––the coastline is remarkably rugged––except for Arenas Blancas, a white-sand beach hugged by a teal Atlantic, a rather unusual sight on a volcanic island.

Experience Canarian Culture In Valverde

Valverde is the capital and cultural center of El Hierro, located on the island’s northeastern part: it is distinct for being the smallest capital of a Canary Island, as well as the only one not straddling the ocean (instead, it’s surrounded by a verdant countryside).

It is the best-equipped municipality on El Hierro, as well as where most of the restaurants and manmade landmarks are located: for great seafood at affordable prices, Yesimar is the place, and don’t miss a Baroque Purísima Concepción Parish Church.

Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, El Hierro was inhabited by the Bimbaches, Berber peoples from North Africa, and in El Julan, you can still see their ancient petroglyphs carved on rocks, with guided tours being your best bet at deciphering them.

The most fascinating attraction on the island, however, is Punta de Orchilla, the westernmost point in non-contiguous Spain… and the exact spot where Christopher Columbus set sail to discover the New World.

Affordable Accommodation

Despite the island’s compact size and small population, with only about 11,000 Spaniards calling it home, it doesn’t suffer from lacking tourism infrastructure: there are exactly 47 accommodation providers listed on the island, from guesthouses to luxury hotels.

Located near Isora, Casa Carlos is a typical El Hierro rural homestay, with two-bedroom houses costing as little as $95 a night; in Mocanal, Casa Rural Aguarijo is a three-bedroom property where overnights will set you back by only $88.

In Valverde, there are good-value-for-money options in Hotel Boomerang ($74) and a one-bedroom apartment unit in V.V Juana ($48), or if you’re here for the coastal views and luxurious amenities, the Parador de El Hierro costs $213 to book per night.

The only flights to Valverde-El Hierro (VDE) are operated from Gran Canaria and Tenerife-North, so in order to reach this Atlantic Eden, you’ll first need to get yourself to one of the major resort islands of the Canaries archipelago.

Alternatively, you can take the ferry from Los Cristianos, in Tenerife, to El Hierro: there are departures 6 days a week, and the company operating on this route is Naviera Armas, with a crossing time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Vitoria, Brazil

The mid-size capital to Brazil’s coastal state of Espírito Santo, home to roughly 323,000 inhabitants, Vitoria is a fast-growing city that’s yet to reach Rio’s level of disorderly growth, but that’s far from being dullsville:

It is best known for its wide, long sandy beaches, most notably Praia do Cambria, 16th century Penha Convent, perched on a rocky protuberance overlooking the Atlantic, and slower-paced living, boasting lower levels of petty crime and violence.

As a nomad, you’re expected to budget $1,640 per month living in Vitoria, as per Nomads estimates: rent prices are around 34.6% lower than in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most expensive metropolis, averaging $504 for a downtown apartment, and a restaurant meal will set you back by around $6.

Alanya, Turkey

Antalya‘s less-famous sister, Alanya lies to the east of the world-famous resort, and it’s a smaller, less chaotic, fortified port town centered around a picture-perfect historic center with colorful Ottoman-era houses, and narrow streets covered in cobbles.

Cleopatra Beach is said to have been visited by, you guessed it, Cleopatra herself. The ancient Alanya Castle dates back to the period of Seljuk rule, and there’s even an octagonal Red Tower overlooking a turquoise Mediterranean: in sum, it exudes Old World charm.

Better even, it’s not the kind of balmy, off-season European getaway to break the bank––we’re talking $10 bucks for a simple meal in an inexpensive restaurant, $515-734 in rent (look up Numbeo), and $1,342 in monthly expenses overall.

Agadir, Morocco

A resort city straddling Morocco’s Atlantic Coast, backed by the jaw-dropping Anti-Atlas mountain range, Agadir is an up-and-coming leisure destination Europeans have been flocking to this winter for their sunny break.

Digital nomads, on the other hand, keep sleeping on it despite the fact it boasts pleasant off-season temps, with lows of 56 and highs of 71 degrees, a high concentration of laptop-friendly eateries, where lunch averages $4, and a beautiful hilltop casbah (citadel) overlooking the ocean.

Agadir is also much safer than your average Moroccan conurbation, with low levels of crime and offering residents a higher quality of life without blowing the budget: in fact, you can live comfortably in a waterfront condo, eating out most nights for under $1,713 a month.

San Miguel de Allende

A beautiful colonial-era town in the hinterland of Mexico, San Miguel de Allende is best known for its Instagrammable corners, with cobbled streets and charming plazas flanked by colorful houses, and a pink-washed, twin-towered cathedral.

Something most nomads themselves don’t know, however, is that it can be a great alternative to a bustling Mexico City or an overpriced Playa Del Carmen, with its many laptop-friendly cafes (check out Geek & Coffee), green areas and low criminality.

On top of being historically significant and considerably more peaceful than larger cities, San Miguel is sure to appeal to budget-conscious travelers, who would prioritize keeping their monthly expenses under $2,300 a month (more specifically, $2,332).

Are you in need of a sunny break away from the doom and gloom of the North American, suburban winter? Being a short two to three-hour flight away and boasting endless miles of unspoiled coastline, Mexico is truly a no-brainer.

But what if you don’t have the budget for Los Cabos, or Cancun, Tulum, and the like do not appeal, what with the bachelor and bachelorette parties, hordes of TikTokers, and the staggering number of tourists?

We get it: a beach vacay is meant to be relaxing, and as it turns out, you’re in luck, as nonstop flights are finally launching from the U.S. to a hidden beach town in the Mexican Pacific yet to be ruined by the masses:

Nonstop Flights To Puerto Escondido From April!

Starting April 2025, United Airline’s partner Mesa Airlines will operate the only direct flights from the United States to Puerto Escondido, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

More specifically, flights will be offered from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), a Texan hub handling over 40 million passengers annually, used by both Houstonites and other travelers transiting on their way south.

Houston is one of America’s main gateways to Latin America, and Mexico especially, with 21 different Mexican destinations within easy reach of passengers already.

According to Jim Szczesniak’s words, the director of aviation for Houston Airports, the new Puerto Escondido flights will help boost the hospitality and tourism industries on both ends of the line while ensuring ‘Houston remains the first choice for travelers’ when they look toward Latin America.

The new Puerto Escondido flights will remain operational daily, year-round, and an Embraer 175 aircraft will be deployed on this route.

Further details, such as the exact launch date in April, departure and arrival times, and prices are yet to be confirmed.

Fly Nonstop To Mexico’s Hidden Beach Paradise

As the name reads, Puerto Escondido means ‘Hidden Port’ in Spanish, and though it’s far from being a traditional hidden gem, having hosted its fair share of surfers and backpackers for decades now, it’s comparatively more laid-back and less crowded than Mexico’s usual tourism hotspots.

The main beach town in the state of Oaxaca is famous for its long and wide golden sand beaches, straddling shiny, azure seas, with a central Principal Beach strewn with tall palm trees and thatch-roofed kiosks.

Despite its central location, this coastal stretch feels much calmer and far more authentic than Cancun’s bustling Hotel Zone: instead of mega-resorts, it’s smaller boutique hotels and youth hostels that border it, and it remains mostly within the public domain.

In other words, big developers have not fenced off access to most of the beachfront, allowing locals to access it for leisure and thus retaining the area’s authenticity.

Golden Sands For Miles On End

Puerto Escondido is primarily a beach destination, owing to its plethora of beaches, beachfront stays, and pleasant temps regardless of season: it’s usually a max 83°F out, with lows of 69°F overnight.

Playa Carrizalillo straddles turquoise waters, and it is lined with seafood restaurants, including Turtle Bay Restaurant, where the best medium-rare tuna in town is served, and the airy, tropical-themed Almazul, which we love for the grilled veggies and octopus.

Elsewhere, Playa Zicatela is highly sought-after by surfers due to its powerful waves and heavy tubes, or as locals like to call it, the ‘Mexican Pipeline’: it is not a challenge to take on unless you’re experienced in this sport, but you’re always free to chill by the beach bar sipping on Margaritas.

Other popular beaches in the area include La Punta, with smaller waves and a family-friendly environment, and Carrizalillo, perhaps the most scenic, centered around a cove with towering sea cliffs as a backdrop.

How Affordable Is Puerto Escondido?

The affordability also plays a big part in its rising popularity, with plenty of good-value listings available, like Hotel Yurimar ($26-a-night), Cabañas Edda ($34), Casa La Paz 1 ($34), and Hidden Port Melrose Place ($42).

If you’re the luxury traveler kind, there are a handful of boutique offerings, such as the adults-only Ennea Hotel, characterized by its rustic decor and 5-star service ($441), and Bora Boutique, an equally charming property within walking distance to Zicatela Beach ($228).

For something mid-range yet exclusive, Tal Vez Boutique Hotel is equipped with an outdoor swimming pool, a lush garden, and poolfront rooms featuring a balcony and free WiFi from only $ 80 a night.

When it comes to dining out, you can get a main dish in an inexpensive restaurant for around $6, or the equivalent in Mexican pesos, or $39.36 for a three-course meal for two people, as per estimates provided by Numbeo.

Puerto Escondido is only one of Mexico’s numerous inexpensive beach cities.

This winter, Americans can also fly nonstop to the up-and-coming Ciudad Madero in the Gulf of Mexico, where there are oceanside hotels from $83, a stone’s throw away from the postcard-ready Miramar Beach.

Everyone knows Mexico is a no-brainer if you’re looking for a sunny break in a gloomy winter, with world-class leisure hotspots like Cancun, Tulum, and Puerto Vallarta to its name, where it’s always balmy out, and resort staff treat you like royalty.

Well-established as it may be, we still feel Mexico is criminally underrated for culture.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little more laid-back than Mexico City, and you feel San Miguel has already become far too popular for your liking, this hidden colonial gem boasting a UNESCO-listed center and affordable prices might just do the trick.

Is Querétaro One Of The Prettiest Cities In Mexico?

Tucked away in the central Mexican hinterlands, Santiago de Querétaro (commonly shortened to just Querétaro) serves as the capital of its eponymous state, and it’s easily one of Mexico’s most overlooked destinations based on its architectural wealth alone:

Established as early as 1531, during the first wave of European migration to the Americas, it has accumulated an enviable array of monuments that have stood the test of time, ranging from religious to civic structures.

In other words, its cityscape feels timeless, unlike other resort-packed areas of Mexico that have been engulfed by the 21st-century development boom.

Perhaps the city’s most easily recognized attraction, the striking orange-colored Church of St. Francis of Assisi houses beautiful sacral art, while the domed Church of St. Rose of Viterbo has a distinctive Baroque exterior and a gold-clad interior.

If you know your History, you’ll be glad to learn the trial of Maximilian I, a former emperor of Mexico, was held at the nearby Teatro de la República, and up the Hill of the Bells, you can visit a small chapel built on the site where he was executed in 1867.

With its ornate inner patios and art exhibits, the ex Ex-monastery of St. Augustine is also not to be missed, not to mention the numerous plazas, 18th-century colonial homes, and charming restaurants dotting the aqueduct-fringed Centro Histórico.

You Can Explore The Old Town In A Vintage Car For Less Than $10 Bucks!

As you might have guessed, there is plenty in Querétaro to keep you busy, so a guided tour of the historic center is easily the best way to optimize time and see as much as possible.

You can choose between a walking tour of the western half of the UNESCO-protected zone, which is arguably our favorite, as exploring on foot is your best bet to discover picture-perfect, secret spots, and it costs only $14.83 per person.

Alternatively, if you’d rather exert as little physical effort as possible and still take in the sights, you can hop on a 1908 Classic Ford T to drive around the colonial core of the city for a negligible $9.89––for less than the price of lunch in a mid-range downtown restaurant!

This tour is perfect for capturing the extent of Querétaro’s 18th-century aqueduct or even driving up the Hill of the Bells where the Maximillian chapel is––meanwhile, you get to quench your early-century nostalgia by riding a vintage automobile.

Querétaro Is One Of The Most Affordable Cultural Destinations In Mexico

Cultural value aside, part of Querétaro’s huge appeal to foreigners, in particular Americans, is how affordable it is compared to other tourist-dominated cities in Mexico.

Based on Numbeo estimates, you can eat for as cheap as $8.90 if it’s some street tacos and soda you’re craving, whereas sitting down for a more elaborate, three-course presentation in a restaurant patio will set you back by around $40.

You can even stay in the heart of the colonial center for as cheap as $51-a-night (El Serafin Hotel Boutique), or $72 for a superior double room with city views at the five-star Hotel Criol.

It’s not dirt cheap, and it’s comparable to other large cities in Mexico, but it won’t break the bank, either.

Looking for the best empanadas and guacamole in town? Try The Carter Bar: the wood memorabilia and Old World atmosphere are unmatched, and their drink menu leaves nothing to be desired.

Whatever you do, do not leave Querétaro without sampling Hacienda El Salitre‘s octopus (pulpo) ceviche, and unless you’re iffy about pork, Tacos Mario serves the best pig meat tacos you’ll have in your life––not even an overstatement.
