Between Southwest adding more nonstop flights from Florida, to tourism revenue growing 13% year-on-year, it’s safe to say La Isla del Encanto has never been trendier than it is at the minute.

Surely, this might have something to do with Bad Bunny fans flocking there for a DtMF-soundtracked summer, but even if you’re not particularly a huge fan of the Puerto Rican superstar, the sun, Latin culture, and lush coastal scenery is sure to win you over.

Unlike most Caribbean destinations, however, Puerto Rico is accessible to American citizens without a passport.

Sorry to hammer it home like your 9th-grade geography teacher, but as you surely know at this point, the island is an unincorporated territory of the United States.

No, it is not a state, and the fact it has its own flag, and Puerto Ricans themselves proudly claim a distinct nationality and cultural identity probably has you wondering whether you’ve got your facts wrong, but Puerto Rico is every bit as much a part of the U.S. of A. as, say, Hawaii or Alaska are.

What ID Can You Use To Travel To Puerto Rico As A U.S. Citizen?

Voting peculiarities and territorial quirks aside, Puerto Ricans are American citizens, and on an international level, it’s Washington that handles foreign affairs and defense.

This means you can fly to Puerto Rico just as easily as Maui, without carrying an internationally-valid passport on you, so long as you’re able to present one of the following alternatives:

  • A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID (the one with the star)
  • A U.S. passport card
  • A Trusted Traveler card (Globaly Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
  • Military ID
  • Other TSA-approved IDs (find the full list here)

Naturally, the above only apply to U.S. citizens. If you fly to Puerto Rico as a non-U.S. citizen, you will still need your internationally valid passport.

Traveling internationally has become a bit of a pain now that countries are doubling down on security and tightening entry rules again following the post-COVID travel boom.

Thailand has just cut down the number of days Americans can stay in the country from 60 to 30 days, and if you’re headed to Europe this summer, you might want to prepare for long border delays and airport queues due to mandatory fingerprinting and new EES registration.

Speaking of Europe, you actually don’t need to fly halfway across the glone to soak up all of that Old World charm:

San Juan, the boricua capital, has all the Old World charm and Mediterranean flair of a Spanish city, minus the fingerprinting and Schengen bureaucracy.

Built by the Spanish upon their conquest of the island back in the 1500s, it is a cobble-paved maze of colonial churches, shaded plazas, and brightly-painted façades that could easily fit somewhere in Andalusia.

It has not one, but two massive oceanfront castles, Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, the kind of typically European landmarks you don’t usually see on this side of the pond, a scenic waterfront promenade in Paseo de la Princesa, which looks just as beautiful as it sounds, and palm-lined streets that somehow never seem to lose their buzz.

Wondering how safe Puerto Rico is to visit?

Due to its U.S. territorial status and unique status under the U.S. Constitution, it just happens to be one of the most stable, tourist-friendly destinations in the Caribbean.

Though risks can never be exactly downplayed, pickpocketing, violent crime, or other kinds of petty crime that plague much of Latin America happen on a significantly smaller scale here, and travelers generally feel safe when visiting.

The island currently scores an exemplary 85 out of 100 on the Traveler Safety Index, indicating strong overall safety conditions for visitors:

The Metropolitan San Juan also has some stunning beaches to its name. This is the Caribbean, after all:

Though it’s not an island, per se, Isla Verde sure feels like one, with its long stretch of soft, golden sands backed by skyscraper-high palm trees, beachfront resorts, and laid-back cocktail bars.

Over in Condado, where all the high-rise hotels and nightlife spots are centered, you’ll find more powdery sands, turquoise waves, and beach clubs, and for the snorkeling enthusiasts out there, El Escambrón is known for its coral reefs and calmer waters.

Outside San Juan, the one day-trip you want to make sure you book is El Yunque: this is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, and it’s packed with waterfalls, jungle hikes, swimming holes, and Costa Rica-esque misty mountain scenery.

Time allowing, take a little detour out to Ponce, Puerto Rico’s elegant second city. It has all the colonial charm of San Juan, with Spanish-built plazas, museums, and family-owned restaurants, except it’s much more slow-paced.

Rincón, on the western side of the island, is where you head straight for: think tall crashing waves, beach bars playing reggaetón round-the-clock, and a relaxed surf-town atmosphere that feels more like a Pacific coastline proper than the Caribbean.

Trust me, I’ve been to over 20 of them myself, and though I’ve barely scratched the surface—I still have some 180 islands to go—Santorini was the one I was left less impressed by thus far.

I’m talking luxury boutique shops propped up by rich housewives, Instagram hordes, and “how-is-this-even-real” cave suites going for $1,000+ a night. If you’re not exactly on a trust-fund budget, sorry to break it to you, you will not be experiencing the glitzy, glossy, influencer-glam side of Santorini.

Be content with long bus queues for buses that show up half an hour late, and the general vibe of “everyone’s sweating but pretending it’s aesthetic.”

Even then, $500–$700 for a 3 to 4-day stint is at the lower end.

What casual tourists who are just visiting Greece for the first time don’t know is that those whimsical Santorini aesthetics are not exactly, ahem, exclusive to the island alone.

Good old “Thira” is part of a larger Greek island group called the Cyclades, where islands share the same aesthetics, albeit different vibes, except they have maybe… half the crowds Santorini gets? If that?

The trendiest Santorini dupe these days, Paros is a breezy 2-hour ferry hop away from Santorini and an up-and-coming Cycladic hub that sits somewhere between still-frequented-by-locals realness and rapidly rising international popularity.

The main port town, Parikia, has that Old Town maze you just can’t help but get lost in, a scenic waterfront lined with family-owned tavernas, and it’s home to Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of Greece’s oldest churches.

Naoussa, the picture-perfect spot, is the closest to a Mykonos vibe you get outside a jam-packed Little Venice, with the same chic bars, fishermen’ houses hugging the shoreline, and white alleys framed by bougainvillea.

Up the hills, Lefkess brings that old school charm and calm: marble-paved streets, zero chaos, and privileged views over the coast.

You should know by now that Santorini isn’t exactly great for beaches, with most of the island’s shoreline being made of lava rock and volcanic cliffs. Paros, on the other hand, has a long, sandy stretch in Golden Beach, and a smooth, sheltered Kolymbithres, known for its sculpted rock formations and calm, shallow water.

I will never cease to be amazed by how Folegandros is a mere 28 nautical miles from godforsaken Santorini, yet it feels like a completely different world.

For starters, unless you know exactly what you’re looking for on the map, you could easily mistake it for a tiny, uninhabited dot not really worth your time. It’s about 12 square miles, and walking north to south and west to east takes roughly 2h30 and 40 minutes, respectively.

That being said, you’d be surprised by how actually filled with life this unassuming rocky outcrop in the middle of the Aegean is. The “capital,” Chora, Folegandros, is the cutest clifftop village I’ve seen in the Cyclades, with its traditional cubic, whitewashed houses gathering at the foot of a Byzantine church.

I’ve had the best lamb and fava dinner of my life in Piatsa, the landmark restaurant literally spewing onto the village’s main square, with tables set under the shade of a giant plane tree, and up the hill, the Panagia Church frames those proper fiery blood-orange Aegean sunsets.

For a chill beach day, Agali is the prime spot on the island.

Think tiny pebbles mixed with fine golden sand, and a sheltered cove backed by cozy tavernas dishing out fresh seafood on the daily. A short boat ride from the main port, Katergo Beach has that wild, untamed character, and the “remote island” escape vibe you’re looking for.

Now, if you associate a Greek island getaway with chill afternoon swims in the deep blue Aegean, relaxed village wandering without a fixed itinerary, and most importantly, amazing food you just can’t find in Oia’s or Little Venice’s fake Instagram tavernas catering to big spenders, Sifnos is the place for you.

Let’s start with the food, which is truly the main highlight here.

The island is the birthplace of Nikolaos Tselementes, who wrote one of the first modern Greek cookbooks all the way back in the early 1900s, and though he’s no longer around, of course, the island’s millennia-old culinary practices live on.

Slow-cooked stews, chickpea soups, mastelo lamb, and artisanal pastries you simply won’t find anywhere else in the Cyclades.

On top of that, it has beautiful small towns like Apollonia, Sifnos. White-painted streets, coffee shops, and that lived-in atmosphere that can’t be rivaled. On the beachside, Vathi Beach, Sifnos, is a low-key sandy strip known for its calm waters and seafood tavernas, whereas Platis Gialos, Sifnos, is the relaxed and easy-going harbor-front stretch.

Inland, you’ll find an excellent hiking network with old stone paths connecting remote villages, monasteries, and viewpoints. Sunsets in Sifnos are just as dramatic as Santorini’s, yet you get none of the hectic 7 pm rush.

All in all, Sifnos is that happy medium. More lively, and with more to see and do than Folegandros, but way calmer than Santorini. Chill, but never exactly boring.

Not your average Greek island weekend escape, Naxos is a fairly large island you might want to dedicate 4 or 5 days, or even a full week to. Seriously. There’s so much to see, and so little time, not to mention a plethora of amazing beaches, that you’ll wish you’d planned a longer stay from the start.

Start with Naxos Chora, the main settlement, which dates back a few thousand years, but owes its current face to a late-medieval Venetian makeover. It has adorable winding pathways flanked by shops and cafés, boutique-lined alleys, and a historic castle to top it off.

Perched on a prominent hill on an islet sitting opposite Chora, connected to the mainland by a stone-paved causeway, Portara is the last-remaining gate of the ancient Temple of Apollo. One of the prettiest sunset spots in Naxos, especially if you can capture the Old Town framed by the ancient marble, though it can get a little busy at sunset hours.

Contrary to Santorini, Naxos has beautiful golden-sand beaches with clear water and easy access, like Agios Prokopios Beach and Plaka Beach, all within short driving distance of Chora.

Agia Anna Beach, a small coastal village where time seems to slow down, has tavernas right on the sand.

The island’s lush, mountainous inland is a huge part of its character, so gorgeous as the coast may be, don’t miss out on Apiranthos, a marble mountain village with stone streets and a strong Venetian feel. Hike up Mount Zas, the highest point in the Cyclades, and try wine freshly bottled from a local vineyard.

If you think Folegandros is offbeat and quiet, wait until you’ve seen how everything basically comes to a standstill, in the best possible way, in Amorgos, one of the farthest, easternmost points you can get in the Cyclades.

It has that rural, undeveloped, authentic character that was lost in much of the Cyclades following the cruising boom of the 80s, and for the most part, communities are made of tight-knit families sharing core hospitality values, and a slow, seasonal rhythm of life.

There’s only two main settlements on the island, their own Chora (a mountain village), and Aegiali, which is a good starting point for beach-hopping, and where you’ll land with the ferry.

The local architecture is quintessential Cyclades, and by that we mean chalk-white abodes with baby-blue framings, narrow labyrinthine alleys, and stone-paved paths.

When it comes to beaches, paradisiacal spots like Agia Anna Beach—yep, same name as Naxos, but totally different vibe—are all exceptionally quiet.

Amorgos’ crown jewel, you ask?

That’s not any particular beach, nor one of its picturesque towns. That would be the dramatic Hozoviotissa Monastery, one of the coolest things you’ll see in Greece: this fortress-like, almost otherworldly white monastery is basically etched onto the cliffside, facing a vertical drop below.

Monks still live inside, so double check in advance whether they’re open for visitors ahead of setting out on the short uphill hike from Chora.

Bornholm may be an island under Denmark, but given the fact that it lies off Sweden’s coast, somewhat detached from the Danish archipelago, and its unique hilly geography, a casual observer could easily mistake it for a Swedish island instead.

You see, most of Denmark is flat farmland and Holland-style dredged canals to keep the rising seas at bay. There’s definitely no significant elevation, or the kind of jaw-dropping nature you might associate with Scandinavia.

Bornholm feels like an entirely different country:

Along the coast, it’s mostly rocky cliffs and towering granite sea walls, whereas inland, you get lush pine forests and hillier terrain. Needless to say, the whole island’s like a hiker’s paradise for nature enthusiasts, and the best part?

Thanks to those allemansrätten Scandinavian laws governing nature use, most land is free to roam—though stricter rules on camping do apply—and there are barely any tourists out to crowd the gorgeous Baltic views or litter the place.

On top of that, Bornholm is home to four rare fortress-like round churches, most notably Østerlars, and one of the largest medieval ruins in Northern Europe: Hammershus, a former citadel, or what’s left of it, resting on the cliffs above the Baltic Sea.

That said, all that wild nature and beautiful ancient stuff comes at a price. Bornholm isn’t exactly the easiest place to get to.

There’s a reason why people jokingly say Bornholm feels indeed more Swedish than Danish. Most people drive from Copenhagen into Sweden, crossing the Øresund Bridge, and take a ferry from the Swedish port of Ystad (overall, the journey takes 3 hours in total).

Alternatively, there’s a night ferry leaving from Køge, Denmark (5.5h), or a shorter ferry from Sassnitz, on the German coast (1.5h).

Similar to the increasingly trendy Île de Ré, which we’ve written about at length here, Île d’Oléron is an offbeat French island offshore from Brittany, on the west coast of France.

Unlike Bornholm, it’s a lot less complicated to get to, thanks to a bridge that ties it permanently to the mainland. That’s not to say it’s not a long way to travel, especially from Paris (5h38), but hey, no getting on and off ferries is already a major win.

We digress.

What has this secret French island you’ve probably never heard about got to offer? Well, how do pine forests crisscrossed by cycle paths, unruffled dunes and sandy beaches, and quaint fishing towns with no beret-clad Instagrammer in sight sound?

The capital and largest town, Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, is where you go for that warm, neighborly welcome to the island: bustling harbor, shops, cafés, and weekend farmers’ markets loaded with every local product under the sun, from goat cheese to freshly-caught oysters.

Side note: Oléron is basically France’s oyster capital, and you won’t find’em tastier or fresher than at Auberge le Saint Pierre.

It might be a little cool in April to swim in the North Atlantic, but if you’re up for a relaxing coastal walk, Plage de Gatseau is a wide sandy beach, hugged by shallow, gentle waters.

You may even spot brave locals sprinting into the surf with wetsuits on. Just keep in mind this is not the South of France, and those beautiful, bright-blue waters you see off the coast are not the warm Mediterranean.

Try dipping your toes first, see how you feel about it before running after them.

Of course, it’s not a French island without a château, and over at Le Château-d’Oléron, a picturesque coastal town, you can visit a monumental star-shaped fort built in the 1600s. There are also excellent seafood restaurants and oyster farms nearby.

Forget Capri and its invite-only, celeb-frequented beach clubs and jam-packed spiaggie: if it’s a tourist-free, tucked-away Italian gem you’re seeking, you should probably check out Ponza, the largest landmass in the Pontine archipelago, some 23 miles from the nearest mainland at Anzio.

Getting there isn’t exactly a breeze, whether you’re traveling from Rome or Naples—add to that a short train, then a couple of hours by hydrofoil—but the minute you step off that boat, the island’s unspoiled charm makes every stressful minute of travel worthwhile.

The main town, Ponza Porto, is the island’s heartbeat. Picture a boat-fringed harbor, gelaterie and seafood trattorie galore, colorful houses hanging from coastal cliffsides, and small boutiques.

The perfect day in Ponza Porto consists of grabbing an espresso on the quayside, watching fishermen bring in their daily catch, then strolling the lively backstreets before swinging by Buco Divino for a casual, but quality lunch.

When it comes to beaches, the most beautiful, and arguably more tranquil, is the crescent-shaped Chiaia di Luna. It’s where locals themselves will flock to on the odd-hot spring day, either for an early-season swim or simply to bask in the sun.

Due to Ponza’s rugged nature, there aren’t that many sandy stretches on the island, but Chiaia di Luna is a rare exception: here, you’ll be greeted with soft sands, shallow waters at the edges, and clear blue seas.

The only island-municipality in Galicia, A Illa de Arousa, or simply Arousa, is a low-key gem of northwestern Spain, where you go to unwind and soak in their slow, coastal life.

With tidal estuaries, reed-lined inlets, sandy coves kissed by calm Atlantic waves, and small fishing villages still largely untouched by tourists—like much of Galicia, for that matter—Arousa is the serene Transatlantic escape you’ve been dreaming of.

The island is sparsely populated, with fewer than 5,000 residents, so it doesn’t really have a “main town.” Think of it like neighborhoods or parish districts that together form a single community.

Out of those, Carril is perhaps the most important, thanks to being the busiest port and primary landing point. It’s probably where you’ll make landfall if crossing by boat from the mainland.

That said, administratively, San Xulián da Illa de Arousa is the parish and main town, where most local services, shops, and the town hall are centered.

All around the island, it’s whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and that unmistakable maritime vibe you can feel in every corner. Arousa’s main attractions, however, are its wild beaches, often lined with soft, golden sands and calm waters.

Now, this is the northwest of Spain, not the Mediterranean, so you might want to test the waters before diving in. For those coming later in the season, say early May, try Area da Secada or A Lanzada—hands down the best swimming spots on the island.

Naturally, no Galician getaway would be complete without a touch of history, and lucky for the culture buffs like us, all around the island, you’ll spot ancient stone chapels, small abandoned fortifications, and maritime watchtowers that date back centuries

How to get to this off-path slice of paradise, you ask? Drive or take local transport from Pontevedra or Santiago de Compostela (which will soon host nonstop flights from Newark) to the ferry dock at Vilagarcía de Arousa, then hop on a short ferry ride to Arousa (5–10 minutes).

Even if you aren’t the adventurous type, don’t worry. The 3 islands we’re set to reveal are all in close proximity to major all-inclusive resort destinations, yet not often publicized as add-ons to your vacay.

They are safe, navigable, and virtually crowd-free.

In fact, one of them even has a visitor cap, but we’ll tell you how to score a spot.

1) Isla Contoy: Cancun’s Pristine Paradise Few Know About

You know Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, but chances are you’ve been missing out on the white-sand oasis of Isla Contoy.

Heck, I just got back from Cancun a few days ago, and not once did I see any ads or hear of any fellow vacationers’ plans to visit.

There are a couple of reasons for that. One, the islands has a strict 200-person daily limit. Second, it’s not nearly as marketed as other popular excursions such as Tulum and Akumal.

Isla Contoy is Cancun’s last frontier. With millions visiting each year, that means only 73,000 at most can visit in a calendar year.

So, is it possible to make a reservation?

Yes, with some advanced planning. A last-minute decision likely won’t be in the cards for you.

2) Isla Marias: A Cluster Of Untouched Paradises

Well, we weren’t expecting “Puerto Vallarta” to be a trigger term this week, but there’s no escaping it…

However, we’re happy to report after an unexpected influx of violence taking place in one of Mexico’s most popular resort towns, the city is back on the up and up.

The wild stretch of coastline wrapping Puerto Vallarta is known as Riviera Nayarit with trendy surfer towns like Sayulita, but what’s often missed is Islas Marias, a a remote archipelago turned UNESCO-protected eco-destination just off the coast.

Believe it or not, up until 2019, it was actually a federal prison rivaling Alcatraz in terms of surrounding gorgeous scenery.

One reason it’s off-radar is because it’s still under operation by the Mexican Navy, so wandering around on your own is limited — plus the fact the ferry schedule is sporadic at best with service just once a week.

You’ll arrive on Islas Marias on Friday from either San Blas or Mazatlán with the option to return on Sundays, which means your only option is a stay for two nights, three days for the ultimate thrill-seeker.

With beaches as postcard-worthy as Chapingo Beach, there are far worse places to spend a few days lounging around.

3) Mexcaltitan: The “Venice Of Mexico”

Even more of textbook “hidden gem” in Nayarit is Mexcaltitan, an urban island that’s been commonly dubbed the “Venice of Mexico”.

This is not a beach destination per se — it’s a map-dot circular island that’s cultural, festive, unique, and practically unknown to the masses.

Mexcaltitan floods every rainy season, which may not seem like a draw to visit, but it’s actually a sight to behold and well-planned for with raised walkways, elevated homes, and boats replacing foot traffic during heavy rains.

It’s true, you can tour the island by canoe just like the real Venice, but we recommend tacos and fresh seafood here over pizza and pasta.

While you can visit from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico’s newest airport in Tepic is even closer to reach one of Mexico’s most unparalleled destinations that’s worthy of topping your travel bucket list.

Having spent time living in the Caribbean, I learned quickly that the postcard version of the Caribbean often skips over the logistical realities. Safety down here isn’t just about avoiding sketchy neighborhoods; it is about infrastructure, medical capabilities, and how effectively a local government manages the chaos of mass tourism.

The U.S. State Department ranks every destination on a scale from Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) to Level 4 (Do Not Travel). To put things in perspective, places like Haiti and Russia are Level 4. Achieving a Level 1 status means an island has its act together—robust law enforcement, stable infrastructure, and tight borders.

For Spring 2026, only a select few destinations made that top-tier cut. But that profound security usually comes with a catch: strict new digital entry systems, high sustainability taxes, or quirky local laws.

Here are 5 of the safest Caribbean islands to visit this spring, and exactly how to navigate them.

1. Aruba

The Dutch Fortress

Aruba is a machine of institutional stability. Operating under a Dutch legal framework, the island has a highly professionalized police force and zero tolerance for systemic crime. You are geographically positioned out of the traditional hurricane belt, meaning the spring weather is an incredibly consistent 88°F to 89°F with almost zero rain.

The first time I visited I didn’t know what to expect and was totally blown away. I stayed at the Marriott and LOVED it. My favorite activities were getting in the water (big diver), and taking UTVs to the northern part of the island. The landscape completely changes and you almost feel like you are driving a Mars rover around. Very fun and great for getting some action packed video.

The Digital Toll:

You can no longer just show up with a passport. Aruba requires a digital Embarkation/Disembarkation (ED) Card filled out up to 7 days before you fly. Tacked onto this is a mandatory $20 Sustainability Fee for all air arrivals. They use this to fund the infrastructure that keeps the island pristine and safe. Use our entry requirement guide to make sure you are all set.

The Local Quirks:

Do not turn right on a red light (it’s strictly illegal), and watch out for European-style traffic signs. While violent crime is basically nonexistent, opportunistic “smash-and-grabs” in rental cars happen. Keep nothing valuable in your car, especially if you venture down to the San Nicolas district after dark.

Spring 2026 Intel:

If you are there on April 27, 2026, you will hit King’s Day (the Dutch monarch’s birthday). The entire island turns bright orange, throwing massive street fairs and kite-flying contests. It is a highly secure, incredibly fun cultural event.

2. Barbados

The Diplomatic Hub

Barbados is the geopolitical anchor of the Eastern Caribbean. It is so stable that the United States put its regional embassy here. Because of the massive diplomatic presence, intelligence sharing and local police capabilities are top-notch, suppressing the baseline threat environment immensely.

I’ve been to Barbados twice now, the first time I stayed at the Hilton Barbados Resort. Loved having a little private beach! You can actually see the resort from the plane when you are flying in if you know where to look.

The second time was actually during a 6 hour stopover when I was flying from St. Lucia to Jamaica with InterCaribbean. We left the airport and did a tour of Harrison’s Cave. It was a great way to spend an afternoon in between islands! Just be sure to get to the airport with time to spare, as we almost missed our connection.

The Wardrobe Warning:

This trips up Americans constantly: Camouflage clothing is strictly illegal. Not just for adults—if your toddler is wearing a camo hat, it will be confiscated, and you can be detained or fined. This is an old law designed to prevent the impersonation of military personnel, and they enforce it rigorously.

Transit Advice:

Fill out your digital Customs Form exactly 72 hours before arrival. Once on the ground, stick to government-run buses or licensed taxis. Avoid the private minibuses (known as “Zed buses” because of the ‘Z’ on their license plates). They are notorious for erratic, high-speed driving and aggressive maneuvering.

3. Bonaire

The Eco-Sanctuary

Bonaire is a diver’s paradise with 85 untouched dive sites. It maintains its Level 1 status by aggressively filtering its tourists through economics, actively deterring the high-volume, low-budget crowds that often bring petty crime.

I have never experienced better off-shore snorkelling than in Bonaire. You could swim out 30 feet from shore, dive down about 20 feet, and you already are face to face with SO MUCH LIFE! The coral is gorgeous, the reef is super healthy, and the island does everything it can to make sure they protect it.

Even experienced divers must do an intro dive to prove they’ve mastered their buoyancy so that they don’t damage the reef on a dive. It may seem like a bit much to avid divers, but it keeps Bonaire’s reefs in arguably the best condition in the Caribbean.

If you stay at Harbour Village like I did, you can even do some night snorkelling next to the restaurant since they have good lights set up.

The Financial Filter:

Bonaire abolished its old hotel taxes and replaced them with a heavy, upfront $75 Visitor Entry Tax per adult. You need to pay this online before you arrive to get your entry QR code. The good news? That QR code is valid for 30 days, so you can island-hop to Curaçao or Aruba and return without paying twice.

Road Hazards:

Street signs here are basically a suggestion, often hidden by foliage or missing entirely. Drive carefully, especially at night, because the island has a protected population of wild donkeys that love to wander onto the dark roads.

4. Anguilla

The Exclusive Hideaway

Anguilla achieves its safety by explicitly rejecting mass tourism. There are no deep-water piers for mega cruise ships here, meaning the island never gets flooded with 10,000 day-trippers. It is an ultra-luxury, autonomous British Overseas Territory where crime against tourists is exceedingly rare.

The Flight Hack:

Historically, getting here was a headache involving flights to St. Maarten and bumpy public ferry crossings. Now, you can fly American Airlines directly from Miami straight into Anguilla in about 3 hours and 15 minutes. It completely bypasses the security vulnerabilities of transiting through a second country.

Mobility Warning:

The island is fundamentally ill-equipped for anyone with severe mobility impairments. Sidewalks are irregular or nonexistent, and you won’t find ADA-compliant ramps.

Spring 2026 Intel:

The Moonsplash Music Festival runs from March 5-8, 2026, at the Dune Preserve beach bar. It is one of the premier reggae festivals in the hemisphere. Security is heavily ramped up for the influx of high-net-worth attendees, making it a highly policed, incredibly festive week.

5. British Virgin Islands (BVI)

The Nautical Playground

The BVI comprises over 50 islands and cays. It’s a Level 1 destination, but the risk profile is unique because your primary mode of transport is a boat, not a car.

The Safety Net:

If you have an emergency out on the water, a standard ambulance is useless. You will rely entirely on VISAR (Virgin Islands Search and Rescue). They are a highly trained volunteer force reachable via Marine Channel 16 or by dialing 767. They are the backbone of BVI’s trauma response. On land, the roads on islands like Tortola are aggressively steep, lack guardrails, and get slick in the spring rain. Rent a 4WD vehicle and check the brakes yourself.

Spring 2026 Intel:

The territory just rolled out a mandatory digital ED card that you must complete 72 hours out. You’ll need this to clear customs smoothly, especially if you are arriving for the massive BVI Spring Regatta (March 23-29, 2026). The Regatta Village at Nanny Cay will be the epicenter of the Caribbean sailing world that week.

The Crucial Medical Reality

A Level 1 rating means you are safe from crime and terror, but it does not mean the hospitals are up to stateside standards. U.S. Medicare and Medicaid have absolutely no validity overseas.

If you are diving in Aruba or the BVI and get the bends, neither island has an operational hyperbaric decompression chamber. You will need an immediate, low-altitude aerial evacuation to Puerto Rico or Curaçao. A dedicated medical air-evacuation flight back to the mainland will cost you between $15,000 and $25,000 out-of-pocket if you are uninsured.

Do not travel to the Caribbean without supplemental travel insurance that explicitly covers high-cap medical evacuation. It is the cheapest safety net you can buy.
