However, recent concerns following a series of security incidents in April have understandably left some visitors wondering about safety in this Pacific paradise.

In a decisive move to bolster confidence and ensure the continued well-being of both residents and tourists, state and federal authorities have announced the deployment of over 300 additional security personnel to Baja California Sur (the Mexico state home to Los Cabos). A significant portion of these reinforcements is dedicated to Los Cabos. Officials emphasize that while the April events were serious, they are viewed as isolated occurrences, and the region has since experienced relative peace, working to uphold its reputation as one of Mexico’s safest vacation spots.

At that time, an April 25 security alert from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico noted an “emerging security situation.” This was based on reports of a shootout in Cabo San Lucas, bus fires, several homicides including a law enforcement officer, and public threats by criminal organizations.

Despite these past events, the U.S. State Department’s travel advisory for Los Cabos currently remains at Level 2, which advises travelers to “Exercise Increased Caution.” It’s noteworthy that this advisory level did not escalate following the April incidents, suggesting they were not seen as indicative of a sustained decline in the broader security landscape of the state.

Proactive Security Enhancements

Authorities are not taking any chances and are aiming to ensure visitors can enjoy a stress-free and peaceful vacation by acting proactively. Saúl González Núñez, the Secretary General of the Government of Baja California Sur, detailed this reinforcement strategy.

“The Army (SEDENA) has provided an additional battalion, and the Navy is also increasing its personnel across the state,” González Núñez stated. “In total, we’re looking at about 300 additional personnel from all participating agencies. This enables us to deploy our forces more effectively throughout the entire state.”

This contingent includes military forces from the Army (SEDENA) and Navy (SEMAR), working alongside existing state and municipal police. These combined forces are being strategically distributed across all five municipalities of Baja California Sur – La Paz, Los Cabos, Comondú, Loreto, and Mulegé – based on specific security needs, with a keen focus on popular tourist centers.

The enhanced security measures are not solely about increased manpower. González Núñez explained that the agreement also involves a redoubled effort that includes “the use of technology to strengthen intelligence efforts.” This dual approach aims to enhance both the visible security presence, acting as a deterrent, and the strategic capabilities of law enforcement to preempt and respond to any threats.

The coordinated response from federal, state, and municipal governments is designed to address any concerns stemming from the April events and restore an unequivocal sense of security. The visible presence of these additional forces is intended to act as a powerful deterrent and provide tangible reassurance to everyone in the region. Authorities are keen to demonstrate they are taking decisive action to safeguard the area.

While authorities are enhancing security, visitors can also take common-sense steps to contribute to a safe experience:

My recent stay at the Grand Velas Boutique Hotel Los Cabos wasn’t just a vacation; it was a meticulously crafted experience in luxury travel, where every desire was anticipated and every detail a delightful surprise. Unveiling Unparalleled Luxury: My Jaw-Dropping Suite

Stepping into my Grand Class King Suite felt like entering a private luxury apartment in Cabo. At a sprawling 2,000 square feet, it offered an incredible sense of space. What’s truly remarkable is that even their smaller luxury suites boast the same exceptional amenities, each featuring a private jacuzzi or a plunge pool on the balcony – a hallmark of exclusive resorts in Los Cabos.

My gaze immediately fell upon the private, heated large jacuzzi on the expansive terrace, perfectly paired with a chic gas fire pit overlooking the breathtaking ocean views of Los Cabos. Picture this: serene evenings, a warm soak, and the soft glow of flames against the Mexican sky. And that was merely the beginning of this luxury vacation.

From the moment you arrive, the level of personalized service in your suite is evident, with a dedicated on-demand concierge ensuring your comfort through a curated selection of amenities. Settling in was effortless, especially with the thoughtful unpacking service.

Knowing I could also have a couple of garments pressed on arrival was a welcome touch. As a coffee lover, the selection of my favorite Nespresso pods provided by the concierge was a definite plus each morning. The suite aroma menu allowed me to personalize the ambiance, adding another layer to the luxurious feel, and the pillow menu ensured a perfect night’s sleep. Even small details like the option for a shoe shine and a luxurious bath preparation highlighted the attention to every guest need.

Inside, the premium amenities continued relentlessly. Imagine finding Dyson hair dryers and optional Dyson straighteners in the bathroom – an unprecedented touch for an all-inclusive hotel! The Vitamin C-infused shower left my skin feeling incredibly refreshed and soft. Sumptuous robes beckoned immediate relaxation, and the gourmet Nespresso machine ensured my caffeine cravings were always satisfied.

From the top-tier bedding on the incredibly comfortable king-sized bed to the luxurious Molton Brown bath products and plush sofas, uncompromising quality was evident in every detail. And the mini-bar? Absolutely incredible, stocked with an impressive selection of beverages, fine wines, and gourmet snacks – all part of this ultimate all-inclusive package. The alert, issued recently by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico, points to an “emerging security situation” not just in the twin towns of Los Cabos but also in the state capital, La Paz, further north on the Baja California Sur peninsula. It references several specific, concerning incidents that occurred around late April 2025:

• Shootout in Cabo San Lucas: Reports indicated a shootout occurred in the early morning hours of April 25th, affecting several neighborhoods.
• Vehicle Fires: On April 24th, three buses were reportedly set on fire across La Paz and Los Cabos. Such acts are often used as disruptive tactics or signals by criminal groups.
• Violence Against Officials: The alert mentions the killing of a law enforcement officer and three additional homicides on April 22nd.
• Cartel Threats: Adding to the tension, threats allegedly made by cartels against officials were reportedly posted publicly (“narcomantas”).

The state, which includes Los Cabos and La Paz, remains at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. The advisory notes this is due to crime, stating that “criminal activity and violence may occur throughout the state.” Importantly, the State Department currently places no travel restrictions on U.S. government employees within Baja California Sur, which often signals a baseline level of confidence in security conditions relative to more restricted areas. While this standing advisory already urged caution, the new specific alert highlights immediate, localized concerns that travelers should factor into their situational awareness, even as the broader state-level assessment hasn’t been elevated further… yet. Travelers should continue to monitor official U.S. Department of State communications for any potential updates.

Putting Things in Perspective

Remembering that incidents like those mentioned, while serious, often occur away from the main tourist zones and resorts where most international visitors spend their time. However, the scope of the recent events – including incidents in Cabo San Lucas itself and the specific mention of cartel threats – signals a need for heightened vigilance for everyone in the region. Los Cabos has invested heavily in security, and Mexican authorities typically respond quickly to disruptions, especially in key tourist areas. The expected increased security presence is part of that response.

Ancient history, rich culture, and some of my favorite food in Europe. The reasons for visiting Athens this summer are endless.  

And now we’ve got one more reason to add to that list: A new budget nonstop flight from LAX straight to the City of Wisdom.  

This will be the only nonstop route between Los Angeles and Athens, making it easier than ever to visit this iconic Greek hub.  

A New Route For Norse Atlantic  

Norse Atlantic will operate this new nonstop transatlantic flight and will offer the budget fare options that the brand is known for.  

If you’re not familiar with Norse Atlantic, they’re a relatively new Norwegian low-cost airline, having only been founded in 2021. This isn’t the only transatlantic flight from Los Angeles operated by Norse Atlantic. They already fly nonstop from LAX to London, Paris, and Rome. 

The new route to Athens will launch on June 3^rd 2025 and will operate 4 times a week with fights on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Giving sought-after flexibility to your travel dates.  

Flights are already available to book now, so I did a little research to see how much they would cost.

Flying out on Friday, 6th, June, and returning on Friday, 13th, June, will cost $372 for the outbound flight and $236 for the inbound flight, giving a total price of $608.  

It’s worth noting that for roundtrip flights, a discount of up to 20% is applied, so these prices will be a little higher if you only want to fly one way for whatever reason.  

As is always the case when you choose a low-cost airline, the price will increase if you want any extras. The prices above are based on the cheapest ‘economy light’ tickets, which give you one personal item and one carry-on bag but don’t include any checked baggage. 

You will also be the last to board and won’t receive an in-flight meal if you select this ticket. This may be tricky when the outbound flight will take 12 hours 40, and the inbound flight will take 13 hours 30!  

To upgrade to an ‘economy class’ ticket, which includes an in-flight meal service and one checked bag, will cost an additional $72 each way at the time of writing.  

Why Visit Athens?  

Athens is often referred to as the cradle of Western Civilization, and if you have any interest in mythology, art, or history then there’s nowhere better to visit.  

One of the first things you should do in Athens is visit its many archeological wonders. The Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus often attract huge crowds of tourists, but for good reason. They’re spectacular and well worth exploring.  

Make sure you allow for plenty of downtime, though: Greek hospitality is legendary, and although the ingredients are simple, there’s no such thing as a simple meal. You’ll find that you’re encouraged to take your time when eating, and the service is so warm and attentive. Eating out in Athens is an experience!  

In fact, the people in Greece are one of the main attractions of the country for tourists. They’re warm and welcoming, and because the Greek economy relies so heavily on tourism, they’re genuinely pleased to see you.  

Whether you’re buying souvenirs or lost and asking for directions, expect big smiles and warm conversation.  

Of course, you can’t visit Greece without going to the beach, and Athens is well-connected to several highly regarded beaches. Edem Beach in Palio Faliro is a free-to-enter beach in the Athens Riviera and incredibly easy to get to from the city center.  

Want to explore a little further afield? As well as being well worth visiting in its own right, Athens is also the gateway to wider Greece.

Head to Athens port, and you’ll find regular boats to the islands of Aegina, Spetses, Poros, Hydra, and Andros.  

At just a 40-minute ferry ride away, Aegina is the closest Greek island to Athens and is a popular weekend getaway for locals. If you’re looking for a day trip or a short break, this is a great choice.
