Some digital nomads go to Spain for the warm weather, others choose to settle in Portugal, drawn to their slower-paced lifestyle, and there’s always the odd oenophile who can’t stay away from Italy for long—but there’s one particular category of expat that has their eyes set on Czechia.

A small European country best known for its picturesque capital, Prague, it is rapidly rising in popularity as an alternative to Europe’s usual nomad hotspots.

Interestingly enough, Czechia is a landlocked country hundreds of miles away from the highly sought-after Mediterranean, and it is known for having brutal winters. Still, it ranks 5th on this year’s Global Digital Nomad Report, with a score of 90.17 out of 100.

They definitely won’t find mild weather and beaches here, so what is it about Czechia that’s suddenly so appealing?

All The Cultural Appeal You Won’t Find Back Home

If you’ve ever dreamt of waking up every day to fresh coffee in your new favorite coffee shop overlooking a cobbled street, working from an ornate public library to the chimes of belfries in the distance, and living in a literal fairytale scene, Czechia’s definitely for you.

It is a country rich in history, from the capital city of Prague to the castle-dotted hills of South Bohemia, and every storybook village in between, and regardless of where you’re relocating to, you can rest assured you’ll find the Old World allure you seek.

Of course, Prague is the most obvious example, as it’s truly one of the most beautiful cities in the Old Continent, complete with historic bridges, soaring church spires, and a monumental castle, but don’t count these other ones out just yet:

At Least 5 Large Cities To Pick From

Prague may be the only metropolis in the truer sense of the word, but there are at least 5 Czech cities with over 100,000 inhabitants that are equally promising nomad hubs. Brno, the second-largest city with over 400,000 residents, boasts a lively café culture and a picture-perfect medieval center.

Plzeň (or Pilsen), is the Czech capital of beer and birthplace of the namesake beverage, but that’s not the only reason 187,000 people stay: it has a compact, largely-pedestrianized Old Town, a relaxed regional vibe, and only a small fraction of the tourists Prague gets.

The fourth largest city, Liberec, is a maze of postcard-ready streets lined with ornate Renaissance buildings, and rounding out the top five, Olomouc is a peaceful city characterized by its elegant squares, dominated by Baroque fountains, richly decorated churches, and charming cafés.

Quality Of Life Like Nowhere Else Can Offer

For the average American living out in their average U.S. midsize city, totally dependent on their car and used to long daily commutes, whether it’s driving to work, running errands, or heading downtown for a few beers with friends on the weekend, Czechia will feel like a breath of fresh air.

Picture walkable cities with a multitude of green spaces and lively commercial areas—none of the usual urban deserts associated with the suburbs—tramways that both run on time, and reach deep into the suburbs, and none of the usual traffic jams.

Other than being walkable, Czech cities are remarkably clean: air quality is good, visual pollution levels are low (forget the big billboards and flashing lights), and littering is minimal. Even after the odd wild weekend, you’re unlikely to wake up to a littered downtown in its aftermath.

It’s Affordable By European Standards

Affordability often plays a key part in a country’s popularity as a digital nomad haven, and let’s face it, who would go through the hassle of moving across the pond, with all the cultural challenges that that entails, only to be poorer by the end of it?

Thankfully for aspiring expats, Czechia is among the most affordable destinations in the European Union. Although prices can vary wildly between cities, and Prague is certainly on the pricier end, you can live a comfortable life earning approximately $3,000 monthly.

Again, if it’s Prague where you’re headed, expect to pay a lot more in rent: a one-bedroom flat in the city center averages $1,215. In a smaller city like Brno, however, you can get a much-larger apartment only a few steps from the main square from around $580-a-month.

Safe Streets

On top of being beautiful and affordable, Czechia stands shoulder to shoulder with countries like Poland, Croatia, and Estonia as one of Europe’s safest to live in. Yes, pickpocketing in urban centers are still an inconvenience, especially in the capital, but overall, crime rates are very low.

Czechia has largely thwarted the terrorism threat that’s been destabilizing the continent—since 2015, there have only been 2 terrorism-related arrests—and as far as immigration goes, the levels of irregular entrants is insignificant compared to France’s or Germany’s.

Whether you’re out pub-crawling in Prague on the weekend, using public transport alone as a woman, or walking home late at night from the gym, the risk of being mugged or assaulted is, for the best part, insignificant.

The Perfect Base For Exploring Europe

Last but not least, Czechia’s geographical location make it a prime destination for digital nomads keen on having a European base to, well, explore Europe. It’s right at the crossroads between East and West, and it is offers excellent transport links to all of its neighbors.

For instance, Dresden in Germany is a short 2–3 hour FlixBus ride from Prague, with tickets costing around $16 when booked in advance. In getting to Bratislava, the well-preserved medieval capital of Slovakia, it’s a 4–5 hour train, and roughly the same distance traveling to Vienna in Austria.

Naturally, if you’re traveling longer distances, that $20 Ryanair flight straight out of Prague Airport will still get you anywhere you need to be in the wider continent. The one true downside to Czechia is how brutally cold it can get in winter, but then again, a sun-drenched Malaga in Spain is a 3h20 flight away.

Just saying.

Narrowing down the options isn’t exactly easy, especially now that numerous countries have Digital Nomad Visas (DNVs) and are actively beckoning nomads to come.

According to the Digital Nomad Visa Finder, there are three destinations in this category where you may be eligible for a DNV:

Thailand

A digital nomad darling, sun-drenched Thailand is the first result you get.

The Southeast Asian country doesn’t exactly require proof of monthly earnings over a certain financial threshold, like most countries do, but in order to apply for their Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), you must show proof of savings of at least $13,600.

You can check the detailed list of requirements on the official website here, but when it comes to the cost of living in Thailand itself, you could live off of your savings alone for an entire year, or longer if you’re being frugal and really stretching it.

Take Phuket, for instance: a tropical island boasting white-sand beaches, a lively social scene, and a growing expat population, it’s the priciest destination for digital nomads in Thailand, yet your average monthly expenses will still total only $1,875, according to Nomads.com.

Cheaper alternatives to Phuket include Ko Lanta, a quieter, laid-back island yet to be saturated by tourism ($1,438 / mo) and Krabi, a mainland city a short ferry ride away to the world-famous Ko Phi Phi ($1,496 / mo).

Brazil

Brazil is also riding the wave of digital nomadism, having made History back in 2022 as the first South American country to found a digital nomad village, and raced ahead of its neighbors in launching a low-bureaucracy, inexpensive DNV.

In essence, as long as you can prove you’re of good character, and you earn over $1,500 a month, you could apply for Brazil’s Temporary Visa XIV (the official name of their Digital Nomad Visa), which allows you to stay in the country for up to one year.

Alternatively, you may also present $18,000 in savings, according to Travel Off Path’s Digital Nomad Visa Finder.

When it comes to living costs in Brazil, average monthly expenses range from $757 in smaller cities with cheaper rent to $1,498 in major urban centers.

Rio de Janeiro is probably the first destination that pops to mind, with its upscale Copacabana beach strip and colorful cultural landscape, but in reality, digital nomads spend slightly over $2,000-a-month when based in Rio: as per Nomads.com estimates, you need at least $2,109.

Luckily, Rio is not representative of Brazil as a whole: over in Vitoria, a mid-size coastal hub we’ve covered previously on Travel Off Path, monthly expenditure averages $1,798. Natal, a colonial-era city in the Brazilian North near golden-sand beaches, is even cheaper ($1,420 / mo).

Malaysia

The third and final country that comes up on the Travel Off Path Digital Nomad Visa Finder when you add in filters such as ‘Monthly Income Under $2,000′ and ‘Beach & Sunshine’ is Malaysia.

Interestingly, their Digital Nomad Visa is open to foreigners earning $2,000 monthly (read further here), though in reality, life in Malaysia is a lot cheaper.

In Penang, Malaysia’s most popular island getaway, remote workers are expected to budget around $1,106 to cover their expenses:

Rent in George Town, Penang’s charming capital city, is particularly affordable, with Numbeo estimates showing that a 1-bedroom apartment in the downtown area will set you back $458.61-a-month. Meanwhile, meals in inexpensive restaurants can cost as little as $3.34.

Kuala Lumpur, the sprawling Malaysian capital, is not exactly on the coast, but it is within short driving distance of beautiful beach towns, like Port Dickson (1.5 hours away) and Bagan Lalang (1–1.5 hours), and monthly expenses usually round out at $1,454.

Nasi lemak, balmy temps and cheap living… again, what’s not to like?

That’s why it’s huge news, one of Europe’s most astounding countries, from the vibrant shores to Medieval cities, is now welcoming digital nomads for up to 3 years.

Who Wouldn’t Make Croatia Their Home Base?

Croatia introduced its version of a digital nomad visa in 2021 during one of the most chaotic times in modern history.

Since the world opened back up, Croatia has soared to new heights both largely driven by lockdown-induced cabin fever and such clear-cut welcoming terms for the sudden remote worker craze.

It hasn’t been just us — numerous travel publications have placed Croatia front and center as one of Europe’s premier destinations, and it continues to grow.

For example, it’s not just the vibrant Mediterranean coastline drawing visitors. Inland cities like Zagreb (often overlooked by Dubrovnik) are surging too.

While some bosses have tightened up remote work policies since the Covid-19 pandemic was deemed over, those who’ve been able to cling to freedom would be hard-pressed to find any legitimate reasons not to give Croatia a fair shake as their home base.

12 Months Wasn’t Enough, So How About 36?

Anyone else jealous?

Rather than launch a whole new program filled with bureaucratic nonsense, Croatia has simply revised their prior 1-year terms by adding 2 more, meaning any non-EU citizens can qualify for a 3-year stay.

While Croatia isn’t always the most budget-friendly country, with reliable income, nomads now have the opportunity to explore this vastly popular country end to end.

We’re talking numerous paradise islands, postcard-perfect villages, bustling timeless cities, and even lush National Parks.

Visa Qualifications

The one downside for digital nomads is that they can’t just pick up and go like the rest of us.

Sure, they can vacation here, but planning out your home away from home can be a real challenge even if the ultimate prize is waking up in stunning surroundings, lounging along the Adriatic, and watching the sunset over a sun-kissed Old Town.

If you were already interested in Croatia’s 1-year term, not much has changed except for added perks.

Besides being able to stay a full 3 years, applicants can now add their family members if that situation applies to you.

Whether it’s wifey, the kiddos, or Gam Gam’s last hurrah, they’re all welcome. Well, Gam Gam might be better off with a shorter trip…

Other requirements remain the same as the prior terms:

• Minimum monthly income of at least $3,825
• Valid health insurance for the duration of your stay
• Valid passport that does not expire within 3 months of your last day in Croatia
• No criminal record

For years, the unofficial entry pass for an extended remote-work stint was the Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM), a paper form that almost automatically granted a 180-day stay upon arrival by air. It was a simple, unspoken agreement. But in 2025, that trusty trick is a thing of the past.

The paper FMM has been retired at major airports. Today, the process is streamlined and digital, but it comes with a catch. When you approach the immigration counter, an agent will scan your passport and place a stamp directly inside. Next to that stamp, they will hand-write the number of days you are legally permitted to stay. It could be 30, 90, or, if the stars align and you get a particularly cheerful agent, the coveted 180.

The key takeaway? The length of your stay is now entirely at the discretion of the immigration officer. There’s a unique sense of freedom in landing, breezing through immigration, and knowing you are truly home. Plus, after four years on a temporary visa, you can apply for permanent residency. The countdown is on for me!

Show Me the Money: What You’ll Need to Qualify in 2025

So, what does it take to get this magical visa? The most common route for remote workers is proving “economic solvency.” It’s the Mexican government’s way of ensuring you can support yourself without seeking local employment.

Based on the 2025 requirements from Mexican consulates, you need to meet ONE of these two financial criteria:

• Steady Monthly Income: Proof of a consistent, after-tax income of at least $4,300 USD per month for the last six months. You’ll need bank statements or official pay stubs to back it up.
• Significant Savings: An average bank or investment account balance of at least $73,000 USD over the past twelve months.

You only need to meet one of these, not both. While the exact dollar amounts can fluctuate slightly between different consulates, these figures are the current benchmark.

The Two-Step Plan: How to Get Your Residency Card

Securing the visa is a two-part adventure. The most critical step is that you MUST apply for your Temporary Resident Visa at a Mexican consulate OUTSIDE of Mexico. You cannot switch from a tourist permit to a resident visa while already in the country.

The process involves booking an appointment at a consulate, presenting your passport, application, photos, and those all-important financial documents, and paying a fee of around $53 USD. Once approved, a visa sticker is placed in your passport, giving you 180 days to enter Mexico. Be that as it may, an equally significant percentage of American nomads are quite happy city-hopping in their own neck of the woods and aren’t exactly keen on relocating to a foreign country.

It has a well-established cafe scene that puts it on a par with New York, Chicago, Seattle and the like, and wherever you are in the sprawling coastal metropolis, you’re never too far from a laptop-friendly eatery serving delicious daytime brunch to keep you going.

Think a cozy The Cafe At Books & Books in Coral Gables, a solid pick for overcoming that persistent writer’s block if you’re an independent writer—free WiFi, floor-to-ceiling shelves stacked with books, timeless wooden furniture, and an intellectual vibe throughout.

In sum, there is plenty about Miami and its diverse communities that will keep you inspired and get your creative juices flowing when you need them most.

High Quality Of Life & No Visas Required

As MBO Partners have concluded, Miami also scores well in monthly living costs: though it is the gateway to Latin America, by no means does it share the nether subcontinent’s cheap prices, but life here doesn’t have to be expensive to be enjoyed.

In fact, nomads will spend an average $2,200-$2,800 per month, in line with other Floridian cities, and tourism hotspots across America, and somewhat cheaper than the average for places like New York and Chicago.

Rent is truly the one thing that will nab the greatest chunk of your income, particularly if you’re keen on living in a trendy Wynwood, or a Bohemian Coconut Grove—on the other hand, grocery prices are reasonable, and there is plenty of affordable dining options around.

Another one of Miami’s undeniable appeal for American nomads is the fact it is a domestic destination boasting pleasant weather and white-sand beaches.

Americans don’t need to apply for a Digital Nomad Visa (commonly shortened to DNV), worry about entry and stay regulations, or for God’s sake, even have a passport when choosing Miami as their new temporary hub: this is the United States, after all!

Latin America, Europe and Asia are great, but have you tried qualifying for one of those hard-to-get DNVs, or living on constant visa-runs to avoid breaking immigration law?

Lastly, this is the closest you can get to being in a tropical location Stateside, as temperatures here vary from 62°F to 90°F during the year, and they rarely fall below 50°F.

With the rising cost of living back home, millions of Americans have got their eyes set on Europe––that’s particularly the case if they’re running an online business and are location-independent.

Now that many European countries have loosened entry and stay regulations for digital nomads and have gone as far as launching visas that facilitate their relocation, 2025 might well be the year you finally take that big Transatlantic leap.

Still, there are 44 countries in the Old Continent, and not all of them offer a high quality of life and tax-friendly regimes compared to the U.S.

If you’ve been hoping somebody would narrow it down for you, you can thank folks over at VisaGuideWorld for coming up with the top 5 countries in Europe based on their cost of living, internet speed, and digital nomad scores.

Oh, and if you think the United Kingdom, France, Italy and the like have made the cut, you’re in for a big surprise:

Portugal

A sun-drenched country squeezed between the much-larger Spain and the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is the fifth highest-ranking digital nomad destination in Europe:

If you apply for their Digital Nomad Visa, which requires a minimum income of €3,548 per month, you’ll receive a six-month tax exemption and be allowed to stay for one year–with the possibility to renew it up to four times, for a maximum stay of five years.

Despite the elevated financial requirements, with the exception of Lisbon, the cost of living in Portugal is far lower: you can live on as little as US$2,087-a-month in the laid-back coastal city of Lagos, or $2,107 in the subtropical Madeira Island.

On top of that, it is one of the safest countries in the Western World right now:

As rife as pickpocketing and petty crime may be in certain urban centers, radicalization levels are low, and extremist attacks do not typically target it.

Romania

Coming in hot at number 4, Romania is not everyone’s first choice of a digital nomad hub, considering the harsh winters, but you’d be surprised at how pleasant it can be once the snow starts melting in the spring, especially during those balmy Eastern Balkan summers.

Bucharest is the largest city and a sprawling concrete jungle sprinkled with communist-era monuments and verdant parks, though it is far from being Romania’s best offer:

Timisoara is a cultural hotspot in the northwestern corner of the country, famous for its elegant Austrian-Hungarian architecture and scenic riverfront, whereas Constanta, on the Black Sea Coast, is an underrated casino hub boasting a vibrant nightlife.

As for our personal favorite, Brasov is a timeless medieval town famous for its postcardy Old Town, where cobbled streets are lined with quirky theme cafes and dominated by an eerily-Gothic, 14th-century Black Church.

It is also the gateway to historically significant regions associated with Vlad Dracul, or as you may know him from the legend, Count Dracula, an actual bloodthirsty king who’s never beaten the vampire allegations and whose Bran Castle is a short half-hour drive away.

Living in Romania, you can expect to pay up to 10% on personal income tax, and you even get a six-month exemption under the Digital Nomad Visa.

The financial threshold is on the higher end, at €3,300, but you can comfortably live in Timisoara for $1,975 per month or in Brasov for $2,657.

Hungary

Ranking at number 3, Hungary is a Central-Eastern European jewel boasting low levels of crime and irregular migration, high rates of social cohesion––it remains largely ethnically-Hungarian––and most importantly, affordable living.

When it comes to destinations, Budapest is truly Hungary’s tour de force:

A stately capital lining the fast-flowing Danube, it hosts a number of Europe’s most iconic architectural landmarks, from the red-dome Hungarian Parliament to the hilltop Buda Castle, and it’s a great home base year-round.

Whether it’s plunging into a naturally-heated pool to escape the winter chill in one of the city’s many ornate 19th-century saunas or strolling a lush-green Margaret Island in the scorching 90-degree summer, Budapest has plenty of tricks up its sleeve to keep you enthralled for months.

When it comes to prices, a meal in a locally-run restaurant away from the overpriced, touristy District V will cost you an average $10.46, while rent in the city center will set you back $669 monthly, as per Numbeo estimates.

In order to quality for the Hungary Digital Nomad Visa in 2025, you need to prove monthly earnings of over €2,000, in line with the overall cost of living in Budapest.

Montenegro

At the runner-up slot, we have a still-offbeat but rapidly rising Montenegro:

A small Balkan nation hugged by the teal-colored Adriatic Sea, it is considered by many an extension of Croatia, thanks to its Dalmatia-style stone-built seaside villages, fortified harbor cities, and slower-paced lifestyle.

The city of Kotor is arguably Montenegro’s most sought-after spot: a popular alternative to Dubrovnik, it has an intact, walled Old Town, and it’s paradise for cat lovers, with thousands of stray kittens populating its narrow, cobbled lanes and piazzas.

Over in Budva, you’ll find a quieter version of Kotor, without the usual early-afternoon cruise crowds, and a fairytale ancient stronghold sitting on a peninsula, and further down the coast, in Bar, a livelier social scene, exciting nightlife scenes, and Montenegro’s longest sandy beach await discovery.

One of Montenegro’s greatest appeals is the fact it is neither a member of the European Union, meaning it can set out its own, more-lax visa policies, nor of the Schengen Zone:

In other words, if you are not a resident of Europe, you do not have to worry about the irksome 90-day rule.

Additionally, the tax rate is between 9-11%, the minimum income requirement for foreign residents has been set at an affordable €1,350––no wonder there’s so many Serbs and Russians living there––and as it is a Mediterranean country, Montenegro enjoys mild temps all year!

Spain

The number one digital nomad haven both in Europe, and the world, ahead of long-time favorites like the UAE and the Bahamas, Spain has the perfect 5/5 score according to VisaGuideWorld, and it excels in all but one category:

Its average internet speed score is 77.70, only lower than that of the UAE (which scores a perfect 100). The adjusted minimum income requirement for foreign residents is €2,140. It has great healthcare, is (largely) inexpensive to live in, and…

You get slapped with 24% taxes, and that’s if you’re in the lower income bracket––but hey, you can’t have everything.

We’d argue forfeiting a significant portion of your income is a fair-enough trade-off for Barcelona’s palm tree-flanked sandy coast and culturally rich Gothic Quarter, Valencia’s near-uninterrupted sunshine, or Mallorca’s turquoise calas and rolling vineyards.

Besides the high taxes, some would argue that the lower levels of safety in densely populated conurbations, especially in exceedingly touristy cities, are Spain’s biggest downside: for instance, U.S. authorities urge Americans to exercise ‘increased caution’ due to crime.

That being said, most residents would consider Spain a safe, and prosperous country to live in, regardless of the ongoing geopolitical crises, and rising criminality, which remains at manageable levels (versus most of the Global South).

If you’re a digital nomad currently country-hopping around the globe, looking for the next safe haven to set up base temporarily and where you can enjoy both low living costs and a high quality of life, you’ve come to the right place.

Between Mexico City’s rising prices, Buenos Aires’ volatile currency, and even former offbeat spot Tbilisi’s housing crisis, we wouldn’t blame you for thinking all of our favorite nomad destinations globally are no longer viable options.

It’s definitely a trickier world to navigate, especially if you’re on a tighter budget, and that’s why you should keep these 4 laid-back hidden gems in mind for 2025:

Vitoria, Brazil

The mid-size capital to Brazil’s coastal state of Espírito Santo, home to roughly 323,000 inhabitants, Vitoria is a fast-growing city that’s yet to reach Rio’s level of disorderly growth, but that’s far from being dullsville:

It is best known for its wide, long sandy beaches, most notably Praia do Cambria, 16th century Penha Convent, perched on a rocky protuberance overlooking the Atlantic, and slower-paced living, boasting lower levels of petty crime and violence.

As a nomad, you’re expected to budget $1,640 per month living in Vitoria, as per Nomads estimates: rent prices are around 34.6% lower than in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most expensive metropolis, averaging $504 for a downtown apartment, and a restaurant meal will set you back by around $6.

Alanya, Turkey

Antalya‘s less-famous sister, Alanya lies to the east of the world-famous resort, and it’s a smaller, less chaotic, fortified port town centered around a picture-perfect historic center with colorful Ottoman-era houses, and narrow streets covered in cobbles.

Cleopatra Beach is said to have been visited by, you guessed it, Cleopatra herself. The ancient Alanya Castle dates back to the period of Seljuk rule, and there’s even an octagonal Red Tower overlooking a turquoise Mediterranean: in sum, it exudes Old World charm.

Better even, it’s not the kind of balmy, off-season European getaway to break the bank––we’re talking $10 bucks for a simple meal in an inexpensive restaurant, $515-734 in rent (look up Numbeo), and $1,342 in monthly expenses overall.

Agadir, Morocco

A resort city straddling Morocco’s Atlantic Coast, backed by the jaw-dropping Anti-Atlas mountain range, Agadir is an up-and-coming leisure destination Europeans have been flocking to this winter for their sunny break.

Digital nomads, on the other hand, keep sleeping on it despite the fact it boasts pleasant off-season temps, with lows of 56 and highs of 71 degrees, a high concentration of laptop-friendly eateries, where lunch averages $4, and a beautiful hilltop casbah (citadel) overlooking the ocean.

Agadir is also much safer than your average Moroccan conurbation, with low levels of crime and offering residents a higher quality of life without blowing the budget: in fact, you can live comfortably in a waterfront condo, eating out most nights for under $1,713 a month.

San Miguel de Allende

A beautiful colonial-era town in the hinterland of Mexico, San Miguel de Allende is best known for its Instagrammable corners, with cobbled streets and charming plazas flanked by colorful houses, and a pink-washed, twin-towered cathedral.

Something most nomads themselves don’t know, however, is that it can be a great alternative to a bustling Mexico City or an overpriced Playa Del Carmen, with its many laptop-friendly cafes (check out Geek & Coffee), green areas and low criminality.

On top of being historically significant and considerably more peaceful than larger cities, San Miguel is sure to appeal to budget-conscious travelers, who would prioritize keeping their monthly expenses under $2,300 a month (more specifically, $2,332).

Heraklion: An Athens Dupe Beaming With History And Pristine Shores

Athens is one of Europe’s true powerhouses. There’s truly no place that will live up to the city’s monumental timeline and well-preserved marvels.

That being said, Athens has become so popular that it’s also one of many destinations dealing with overtourism concerns, especially in the summer months when more travelers have vacation time to globetrot.

While there’s no such place as Athens 2.0, Heraklion 1.0 serves as the next best thing. The island of Crete’s largest city boasts fascinating ruins without the crowds, like the lesser-known Palace of Knossos.

With a mix of timeless landmarks, laid-back living, and stunning blue-water shores, digital nomads will become magnetized to all Heraklion has to offer, especially with new additions catering to their lifestyle, such as top-rated coworking spaces like Comeet Creative Space.

I visited Chania 7 years ago and have a feeling not much as changed since my first impression was time stands still here.

If you’re the type to go with the flow, Chania is the place to be. I remember walking around 8 am in search of much-needed caffeine and couldn’t find any cafes open yet since locals tend to live by their own clocks.

It’s the ultimate laid-back destination, which just so happens to be stunningly beautiful as well.

I’d love to share photos of my trip, but I was accompanied by my ex, which is Chania’s only kryptonite to sour the otherwise perfect memories exploring Old Town’s cobbled walkways, sitting seaside indulging in fine wine and cheap ‘catch of the days’, and watching the sunset over the harbor from Nostos Hotel.

In and around Chania are some incredible beaches to intermix in Chania’s perfect work-life balance.

Circling back to overtourism concerns, Nafplio would be the antithesis. How a city so worthy of being on your desktop screensaver flies under the radar is beyond explanation, but perhaps digital nomads can put this Greek hidden gem in the spotlight.

Nestled in the Peloponnese region, this tranquil city of red-tiled homes, vivid blue waters, and undeniable charm will rock your socks off, especially once you taste local cuisine and cheap wine.

Despite being unknown, Nafplio is surprisingly ready to embrace remote workers with plentiful cafes and coworking spaces, a great work-life balance, and affordable apartments.

According to Spitogatos, a Greek real estate company, digital nomads can score 1-bedroom apartments as low as $300 per month!

Although, you’ll likely find yourself spending the majority of time at cozy cafes or one of many breathtaking beaches, such as Karathona Beach, Tolo Beach, or Kondyli Beach.

Your sun-kissed southern shores, with golden sands extending for miles on end, the vintage tramways that rattle up your capital’s hilly, pastel-colored neighborhoods, and the vast wine country dotted with fairytale villages to the north.

It’s no wonder digital nomads can’t get enough of it, but while millions of expats flock to the same three destinations, resulting in a staggering rise in the cost of living for locals, there are lesser-known spots that are just as incredible, yet remain undiscovered.

If you’ve been considering Lisbon for the culture, Porto for the affordable food, and the Algarve for the great weather, then you’ll love Coimbra:

Why Are Some Nomads Swapping Lisbon For Coimbra?

Located in central Portugal, Coimbra is a riverside city boasting mild winter temps––it’s currently a pleasant 62.6°F degrees out, with overnight lows of 51.8°F––and a high concentration of historical landmarks dating all the way back to the Middle Ages.

Even if you haven’t been to England, we’re sure you’ve heard of Oxford or Cambridge, centuries-old university cities that have issued some of the greatest innovators known to mankind.

Well, if you’ve ever wondered what’s the Portuguese equivalent to an ancient center of knowledge, it’s right here, in Coimbra, as it is home to the 13th-century University of Coimbra, Portugal’s oldest and one of Europe’s most prestigious.

Coimbra Will Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

We’re not sure about you, but we do feel particularly productive in an intellectual, diverse environment, and Coimbra’s ever-growing student populace, hailing from all over the world, keeps the city young, fresh, forward-thinking, and vibrant.

The historic center is one of the best areas for mingling with locals, as it is packed with quirky bars such as What’s Up Doc, O Reitor (Portuguese for ‘Dean’), and Pinga Amor, a happy hour hotspot for students looking to unwind.

This is a city with a population of over 106,000 residents, a significant percentage of those being visiting foreigners, so needless to say, you’ll have no issue getting around by speaking English or making friends if you’re the sociable kind.

Postcard-Ready Corners Just About Everywhere

Lining a fast-flowing Mondego River, the longest river entirely located within Portugal’s national territory, the Old Town is a collective of postcard-ready corners, with its narrow streets covered in calçada portuguesa (the unique Portuguese pavement patterns), ornate churches and medieval palaces.

The main attraction is obviously the University of Coimbra, as it hosts the richly-decorated Joanina Library, but don’t miss out the 12th century, Romanesque Sé Velha (Coimbra’s cathedral), or the historically-significant Church of the Holy Cross.

It is where the first two kings of Portugal are buried, and its Baroque organ is surely one of the most beautiful you’ll ever see––and while you’re at it, don’t forget to swing by the nearby Safra Restaurant to try their Portuguese-style codfish.

Coimbra Is Very Nomad-Friendly!

University cities are usually the best for digital nomad infrastructure, as they have a plethora of public libraries, cafes, and coworking hubs catered to students and laptop owners in general, and Coimbra is no exception:

For the best coffee shop in town, with friendly waiters and a welcoming community of expats, check out Kava, or if you don’t mind the noise of the buzzing streets, Quebra Bar offers a lively atmosphere, great beer, and they even host live performances in the evening.

There are free WiFi hotspots scattered all over Coimbra, especially in proximity of the university, but also in the Municipal Market, our go-to spot for street food (and where you can get the most delicious custard tarts in town), and the verdant, peaceful Botanical Garden.

An Affordable Alternative To The Capital

The average internet speed across Coimbra is an average of 23Mbps, and even if you run out of data, any of the riverfront cafes are sure to have free WiFi available to sitting-in customers––on top of that, prices are definitely on the cheaper end.

Ordering a pastel de chaves (a traditional veal-filled, half-moon-shaped pastry) and some orange juice from a bakery will set you back by roughly $4, if not less, and a main dish in an inexpensive restaurant frequented by locals will cost on average $10.43.

Rent is also relatively affordable in Coimbra, especially outside the city center, where a one-bedroom apartment can be as cheap as $565-a-month, if you’re residing officially in Portugal, while private rooms for short to mid-term visitors start from $633 on Airbnb.

A Digital Nomad Hotspot In The Making

Coimbra is currently the 15th highest-charting digital nomad destination on Nomads, the main source for tracking digital nomad trends globally, and nomads seem to love it for its:

• Cost: in total, monthly expenses average an acceptable $2,231
• Fun: as pointed out above, there are plenty of Bohemian bars to pick from
• Weather: it’s usually sunny regardless of season, and winters are never too cold
• Safety: Coimbra has lower rates of pickpocketing and violent crime than other European cities
• Walkability: much of the historic center can be seen on foot, and the city, in general, is very pedestrian-friendly

According to their insights, downsides may include a lower number of digital nomads in town (if feeling as if you’re part of a community is important to you), there are many smokers, and alcohol consumption is high.
