When you think of Peru, chances are Lima comes to mind, with its beautiful coastline, vibrant food markets, and buzzing city life. Or maybe the colonial charm of Cusco, which brings that Old World allure to the mix.

And, of course, there’s Machu Picchu, the world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the Andean Highlands.

That used to be Peru ticked off for most, or at least Peru for beginners.

Lately, an interesting trend has been emerging: more and more visitors are being drawn to a lesser-known city in the south of the country that’s not exactly part of the popular, Andean-centered Peru 10-day package.

In fact, according to data shared by Gercetur, the Peruvian Gerencia Regional de Comercio Exterior y Turismo (Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism), tourism there has already surpassed pre-pandemic levels:

Arequipa Is Peru’s Shining Star

Welcome to Arequipa, Peru’s trendiest destination right now:

Historically considered Peru’s third-best tourist destination, Arequipa used to be the place you ‘fit’ into the itinerary if there were enough days left. After, you know, Cusco, Lima, and all your Sacred Valleys and Rainbow Mountains and stuff.

Recently, however, a growing number of tourists are veering off the beaten path—not that we’re trying to be self-referential—and spending time in Arequipa.

This isn’t just another name on a map, or somewhere you pass through on your way from Point A to B: it’s a sprawling regional capital home to over 1.19 million residents, with a unique mix of history, culture, and geography that makes it stand out from the rest.

For starters, it is nicknamed La Ciudad Blanca, or The White City: a majority of the buildings in the colonial Historic Center were built by the Spanish using local sillar, a volcanic stone extracted from the surrounding mountains.

Also UNESCO-protected, this same Centro is packed full of stunning Baroque churches, café-bordered plazas, and elegant colonial mansions dating back to the 16th century, perfectly preserved.

There’s plenty of historic structures to be found around town, but if we were to narrow it down to the top 3 most important, these would definitely be:

• Plaza de Armas: the central square, and the beating heart of Arequipa. It’s where you go to admire the ornate white-stone buildings, buy snacks from friendly local vendors, and people-watch
• Catedral Basílica: located right on Plaza de Armas itself. Originally dating back to the 1600s, it’s been rebuilt a number of times, mixing Renaissance and Baroque features
• Santa Catalina Monastery: essentially a miniature city inside Arequipa, it has narrow streets, vibrant-colored walls (in stark contrast with the largely-white townscape), and old cloisters

The coolest thing about Arequipa is that it sits in a valley surrounded by volcanoes, with El Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu to name a few.

These provide the most breathtaking backdrop to the city’s church towers and Spanish-style civic edifices, and, beyond being beautiful, these mountains are the main reason Arequipa is so fertile and productive.

After all, volcanic soil is the key ingredient behind its rich agriculture.

Peru’s Food Medina, Second Only To Lima

Ancient monuments, stunning natural vistas, and lush nature are perhaps 50% of the reason why tourists flock to Peru every year. The remaining 50% is food.

We don’t know that for sure, but we know.

If you came here for fresh farm-to-table fare, new, indescribable flavors, and culinary surprises around every corner, Arequipa is probably second only to Lima in terms of gastronomical prowess. If the capital is the country’s Food Mecca, Arequipa can be the Peruvian ‘Food Medina’.

A beef-and-herbs-stuffed spicy pepper, topped with a creamy béchamel-esque sauce, rocoto relleno is Arequipa’s pride and joy, and there’s nowhere better to try those than Sol de Mayo, a charming colonial-inspired eatery near Plaza de Armas.

Ocopa Arequipeña is a hearty local dish of boiled potatoes smothered in a thick sauce made with peanuts and huacatay (an Andean herb), topped with cheese, and if they’re feeling particularly generous, a boiled egg crowns the plate.

Chicha, run by renowned Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio, is said to serve the best ocopas in town, and given the chef behind it, expect nothing less than exceptional.

The Peruvian Grand Canyon

Last but certainly not least, Arequipa is the main base for trips to Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest, and perhaps the main natural wonder in southern Peru.

About 10,730 feet deep at its deepest point, it’s roughly twice as profound as the Grand Canyon, and this dramatic depth creates towering cliffs and natural terraces that attract both adventurous rock climbers and casual sightseers alike.

To the bird geeks out there, this is the home of the Andean condor, and at viewpoints like Cruz del Cóndor, you can actually see the majestic winged creature in flight, as they vertiginously glide down the ravine only to conquer the skies again.

Other than wildlife, the canyon is dotted with ancient agricultural terraces, built thousands of years ago by long-lost civilizations that preceded the Incans. Some are still in use today by local farmers, especially those from indigenous communities like the Collagua and Cabana peoples.

Its tiny capital city, also called Luxembourg, is the main reason why: with a UNESCO-protected Old Town, complete with historic ramparts and a canal-traversed medieval core, it is all the European fairytale you’ve been dreaming of.

Luxembourg (the city) has plenty of charm already, but you should definitely make an effort to explore the wider Grand Duchy, especially given the fact that… public transport here is completely free! All trains, buses, and intermunicipal shuttles are fair game.

Even as a tourist, you can just easily hop on board a train and explore the Rhode Island-sized nation at length, from the castle town of Vianden in the north, to the lush nature reserves in the vicinity of Esch-sur-Alzette in the south.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Eastern Europe’s Rising Star, Sofia is one of those love-it-or-hate-it kinda places that, in the very least, will leave a lasting impression on you. Its fiercest defenders love it for how architecturally diverse and rich in culture it is:

The cityscape is nothing short of a crazy mish-mash of Roman ruins, earth-swallowed, recently-dug out Byzantine churches right by communist-era apartment blocks, Ottoman mosques, and a monumental, golden-domed Orthodox cathedral to top it off.

Then of course, it’s probably the cheapest capital city to visit in Europe, alongside its faithful companion, Romania’s Bucharest: a tarator soup and Bulgarian moussaka meal deal might set you back just under $10.

As for the detractors, Sofia is far too gray and dreary on the eyes, with not much to do other than chowing down in the Yellow Pavement district and admiring Soviet-style architecture, but hey, to each their own! Eastern European aesthetics aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Zakynthos, Greece

If Santorini and Mykonos are the only two islands that come to your mind when you think of Greece, my friend, you’ve got some reading to do once you get to the end of this story.

We’ve got a soft spot for the Dodecanese and the sleepier side of the Cyclades, but as per KAYAK’s latest data, Zakynthos is stealing the spotlight as Greece’s emerging spot. Honestly, with those Gatorade seas, emerald hills, and a refreshing no-frills atmosphere, we definitely won’t be raising objections.

Sitting on the Ionian side of Greece—the same island group as the trendy Corfu—Zakynthos is best known for Navagio, a.k.a. Shipwreck Beach, which regularly goes toe-to-toe with Bali’s Nusa Penida for the top spot on those “Most Beautiful Beach In The World” lists.

Beyond the iconic cove with the rusting shipwreck (which you can only get to by boat, by the way), the island’s coastline is fringed by secret bays and laid-back fishing villages that look like your perfect Greek postcard.

If you’re unfamiliar with the terminology, a ‘second city’ is what we call an important hub in a country that is a main cultural center, and a sizable-enough urban heavyweight to rival the capital, though it is not the administrative heart.

Ghent, Belgium

The fourth-fastest rising secondary destination in Europe is yet another Belgian gem, and this time, the country’s second-largest: Antwerp is Brussels’ Flemish counterpart and a sprawling city with a real lived-in feel:

Its historic Old Town revolves around a postcard-ready Grote Markt, flanked by ornate guildhouses, and the cobbled streets that emanate from it lead to hidden courtyards and quirky chocolate shops. A short 25 min train ride from Madrid, Segovia is up in searches by 96% year-on-year, and that’s hardly a surprise considering it’s the quintessential European city break: from Roman ruins, to medieval castles, to beautiful imperial architecture, it ticks all of the boxes (and then some).

Well, according to the latest statistics, even 2 back-to-back November travel alerts aren’t stopping travelers from venturing to one of Latin America’s most paradisal destinations — especially for reliable sun over the next few months.

Whether it’s for wondrous wildlife, picture-perfect surf spots, luxe resorts, or jungle excursions, vacationers are still booking trips to Costa Rica at a higher rate than last year, according to the Costa Rican news source Tico Times.

It’s true, despite U.S. officials heeding caution with very specific, detailed incidents to inform American tourists of the risks.

Costa Rica Expects A Busy Winter Season

We at Travel Off Path claimed earlier this year that Costa Rica may have lost its luster, and it was backed by a myriad of safety concerns, higher than usual prices, and dwindling visitor numbers.

We’ll touch on safety again shortly, but Costa Rica has clearly regained its popularity, at least as a relaxing winter escape.

Both of Costa Rica’s main entry points, Liberia and San Jose, boast average highs of 78 degrees or higher from December through March.

A far cry from icy roadways and cold shoulders (oh wait, that’s just my ex), Costa Rica offers an array of attractions and experiences that are incredibly joyful to explore in a diverse tropical playground.

While it remains to be seen if your winter vacay will match the country’s famed “Pura Vida” lifestyle, some would argue it’s more marketing jargon than the current way of life right now.

That being said, there’s no denying Costa Rica is truly one of the most captivating destinations in close reach to the States — if it’s safe.

Home to luxury resorts, such as Secrets Papagayo (where I’ll be vacationing soon), unknown beach towns dotting pristine shores, and immaculate rainforest adventures with vibrant wildlife and natural wonders, Costa Rica will always be a draw, and the expected influx of 300,000 compared to last “high season” proves it.

The Latest Travel Alert Raises Eyebrows: Tourists Are Being Harmed

As if one travel alert wasn’t enough, Costa Rica said, “hold my Imperial“.

The latest U.S. Embassy-issued alert is heavy on crime, and tourists are feeling the brunt of it.

Unlike nearby El Salvador, which has cleaned up its act, Costa Rica is seeing a spike in the wrong direction.

As such, the Embassy highlighted 3 concerning events directly affecting visitors simply going about their business:

• Criminal groups have targeted foreign-owned businesses and homes for crimes that included robberies, break-ins, and extortion
• Criminal groups have targeted travelers, forcing them to withdraw substantial amounts of cash from ATMs or initiate wire transfers
• Tourists have reported home invasions and armed robberies at their Airbnbs (and other rental properties)

As a result, the U.S. Embassy is insisting Americans follow these helpful tips, such as:

• Set daily withdrawal limits for your debit cards/bank accounts
• Avoid traveling alone, especially after dark
• Avoid booking Airbnb properties with reviews mentioning security incidents
• Purchase travel insurance that includes loss or theft of valuables coverage

Costa Rica’s Other Alert Doesn’t Pass The Sniff Test

Just before the Embassy released its second alert for the week, the prior warning was a real doozy!

In case you missed it, this one is a lot less worrisome, as you can beat it to the punch, unlike an out-of-nowhere mugging at an ATM.

This advisory was actually categorized as a health alert. The concern revolves around a commonly used pesticide triggering aluminum phosphide poisoning.

The good news is, even though it’s a colorless gas, it does emit a noticeable odor in 2 forms.

The Embassy suggests if you catch a whiff of garlic and/or spoiled fish funk, you could be in danger.

It’s also important to note that moving to another part of your residence or vacation accommodation where there’s no odor can still be just as dangerous — it’s best to get away entirely, as aluminum phosphide can be fatal, or at the very least, cause severe respiratory symptoms.

Tuzla Sees Torrent Of Tourists

Let’s start off with the least known of the quad. Tuzla, Bosnia & Herzegovina (yes, that will be the only time spelling out “Herzegovina” this article), is seeing a 67.9% increase in visitors year-over-year.

Bosnia is off the beaten path for most travelers, but it’s easier to reach than you’d think with plentiful flights to all 4 of the country’s airports. In fact, Wizz Air is set to launch 9 new routes to Tuzla.

Plus, those looking to escape the record-breaking crowds of Croatia have one of Europe’s least known coastlines that is shockingly beautiful just outside the Croatian border on the Bosnia side in the town of Neum.

Google it. You’re welcome.

As for Tuzla, this under-hyped city is a stunning destination in its own right. While not a beach town, this inland city beholds the gorgeous Pannonian Salt Lakes, which are fed by underground salt springs, even offering saltwater waterfalls — it’s a vibrant urban oasis you wouldn’t expect to find.

Beyond the lakes, you’ll discover a picturesque Old Town lush with timeless plazas, intriguing museums, and sidewalk cafes we all love across Europe.

Despite the newfound popularity, Tuzla is still remarkably affordable. Stay at 4-star Grand Hotel Tuzla for $65 or save even more by booking a guesthouse for under $30.

Uncork Ireland’s Second Largest City

There’s been a lot of fuss about Dublin’s expensive prices, especially for travelers. That’s why lesser-known cities such as Galway are losing their “best kept secret” status, becoming more mainstream.

Throw Cork into the equation too. Ireland’s second largest city had its best May ever to cap off spring.

Home to astounding shores likely flashed on your screensaver slides, majestic castles, and of course, classic Irish pubs for a pint of Guinness, you’ll forget Dublin existed.

Most notably, Ireland certainly isn’t a year-round sunny beach getaway, but summer sees warmer weather and extended daylight as late as 10 pm, so your beach days will seemingly never end!

Though, make sure to set aside some time for Cork’s popular summer festivals, including:

• Cork Harbour Festival

Come On In, “Or-Hoos” Is Open!

While it wouldn’t be a shocker to see Copenhagen see record numbers, but it certainly is for Aarhus (pronounced Or-hoos), especially with no direct flights here from the U.S.

Europeans have discovered Aarhus’s delights as May was a hot month for this lesser-known city.

Like Cork, Aarhus is Denmark’s second largest city, offering more of a laid-back vibe than the bustle of Copenhagen, where you have to keep your head on a swivel to avoid a sea of cyclists.

While Aarhus is certainly known for its bike-friendly streets, it’s more known for being enjoyably walkable through its charming Old Town, Dokk1 harborfront, and the must-visit ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, famous for its “Your Rainbow Panorama” rooftop walk with sweeping views of the cityscape.

Like Copenhagen, Aarhus is also a foodie’s dream with Michelin restaurants and popular Aarhus Street Food market, but if you’re a budget traveler, you may want to look elsewhere…

Riga’s Rise To Stardom

One of Europe’s cheapest destinations is on the rise, and it has been for quite some time. Digital nomads have flocked here to save some serious cash working from cozy cafes in a city known as the ‘Paris of the Baltics’.

But the remote work craze is not driving tourism; everyone is looking to discover a European gem full of medieval charm and pretty beaches in the summer in nearby Jūrmala.

Ever heard of Tivat? Likely not unless you’re a globetrotting travel junkie like us at Travel Off Path.

But there’s no doubt Tivat is creeping up in the shadows of its trendy neighbor Albania as one of the Balkans’ most sought-after vacation spots.

Tivat is the definition of a laid-back vacation. Sit seaside with sensational eats a glass of cheap local wine, relax poolside at a fab resort, or venture to one of many gorgeous beaches along the Adriatic in close reach.

Of course, the Bay of Kotor is also home to many beaches, but going a little further to the coast offers a more pristine setting as some of the Bay’s beaches can be a little rocky to enjoy a nice swim.

If it were me booking a trip, I’d have Plavi Horizonti circled in red as my go-to spot for sun-kissed shores.

No matter where you are in or around Tivat, the atmosphere is truly dreamlike as the townscape is sandwiched between vibrant blue waters and staggering mountains.

Is Tivat Affordable?

Perhaps best of all, if you’re going to venture all the while to Balkans, it’s safe to say day-to-day prices are worth the trip.

While Montenegro has seen an increase in flights across Europe, it’s still low-key enough to not see inflated costs like many other notable getaways.

Tivat is arguably the flashiest city of Montenegro. As such, to get the full Tivat experience, a grand waterfront stay is a must.

Food, wine, excursions, and transit are all budget-friendly, but you’ll want to plan ahead booking a resort.

Among the cheapest of the region is a familiar name back home: Waikiki Beach Resort at $182 this summer, but no promises getting lei’d.

Definitely check out the spacious apartments and arrive early to score a barstool at their very own beach bar with a wide-ranging menu of fresh foods and hand-crafted cocktails.

For what it’s worth, Waikiki tops the rankings for Tivat’s best 2025 hotels too. There are a handful of other posh options too for those of us with fatter wallets (definitely not me):

• Royal Blue Resort & Residences
• Porto Montenegro Residences
• Rosic Apartments

How To Get Here

One thing we’ve skipped thus far is Tivat’s vibrant marina, often serving as a cruise port as the main method of getting here with name brand cruises like Ponant, Silversea, and Seabourn.

These may not ring a bell like Disney and Carnival, so they’re best served for Americans looking for a full-blown European adventure.

However, as mentioned previously, it’s actually air traffic seeing a huge spike. No, there’s no nonstops to the U.S., but summer is made for adventure!

Tivat’s small airport is expected to serve 1.3 million passengers in 2025, meaning it’s easy to connect.

Americans can hop from the following hubs directly, easily reaching Tivat with just one layover:

• Belgrade
• Istanbul
• Berlin
• Oslo
• Copenhagen
• Paris (ORY)
• Barcelona
• Brussels

Just know many of Tivat’s flight routes are seasonal. Otherwise, you’ll want to fly into Montenegro’s capital Podgorica, which is largely considered a pass-through city anyway.

Life in the big city isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

If we turn back the clock to my 25-year-old naive self, I thought moving to the tallest building in San Diego was a surefire way to happiness.

These 3 unexpected Southern cities are soaring in popularity:

Pensacola, Florida

You hear of every Florida beach town and their mother, but Pensacola proper rarely enters the chat as many travelers opt for Panama City, Destin, and even cross the state line to Gulf Shores.

Pensacola is far more than a gateway to these notable beaches, boasting a charming downtown district and its own beautiful shores.

While it’s true you can expect crowds across most Florida beaches as everyone has a different Spring Break, once the college crowds go back to pretending to pay attention in class and getting AI to write their thesis papers, Pensacola is a gorgeous vacation spot.

While you’re unlikely to travel here solely to dive in to the history of one of America’s largest chain stores, Bentonville’s newfound tourism hook is based around events — over 300 of them, in fact.

According to local news outlet 5NEWS, Bentonville hosted 310 events throughout 2024, including Bentonville Film Festival, Bentonville Bike Fest, and local’s favorite First Fridays, a family-friendly block party of music, great eats, and artisan crafts.

This underrated city offers astounding natural settings to explore as it’s held in high regard in the mountain biking community and boasts down-home delights downtown with charming storefronts and world-class cuisine.

Bike culture is such a staple here, there’s even The Bike Inn, one of the most unique and top-rated stays in Bentonville, only costing around $100 per night this spring.

Hattiesburg, Mississippi

While Biloxi’s white-sand shores and thrilling casino hotels might be Mississippi’s biggest draw during beach season, believe it or not, it’s actually the never-ending waterways and small town charm of Hattiesburg that’s all the rage.

Everyone knows Latin America is a no-brainer for digital nomads: infrastructure and safety issues aside, it offers a good enough quality of life for maybe half the usual budget, year-round pleasant temps, not to mention the culture and friendly locals.

For that reason, nomads tend to believe the good far outweighs the bad, but what if we told you there are certain places where corruption and crime aren’t as widespread, and you can both enjoy the upsides of LatAm life and live worry-free?

Here are 5 safe Latin American cities that you may be sleeping on as a remote worker and that are rising fast in popularity this year:

Viña del Mar, Chile

Straddling the unusually long coastline of Chile, Viña del Mar is a resort city licked by the azure Pacific and highly sought-after by Chileans themselves for its wide, sandy beaches bordered by high-rise buildings, casinos, and historical monuments.

It has a palm tree-lined promenade, a romantic Wulff Castle, inspired by European fortifications and built as far back as 1906, and in the South American summer, at its peak right now, Quinta Vergara Park is a lush oasis for unwinding after a long, laborious day.

As a nomad, the beachside zone is the best district to be based as a foreigner, namely streets just off the busy San Martín and Libertad thoroughfares: it’s fairly walkable, well-catered by convenience shops and cafes, and don’t forget the ocean breeze.

Safety-wise, Chile is definitely on the least-risky end of the spectrum, despite the occasional disruptive protest and petty theft, though Viña del Mar, in particular, is considered to be safer than the capital Santiago and fellow beach hotspot Valparaíso.

Asuncion, Paraguay

The capital city of the landlocked nation of Paraguay, Asunción lines a fast-flowing Paraguay River, which cuts across the country, and it’s best known for its colonial-era city center, dotted with monumental edifices and museums.

López Palace ranks among the stateliest and most impressive official seats of Government in the New World, and the National Pantheon of Heroes is modeled after Rome’s own, housing the remains of some of the most emblematic Paraguayans to have existed.

If you’re a street food enthusiast, Mercado Municipal has rows upon rows of stalls selling sopa paraguaya and pastel mandi’o, and the city’s overall affordability also plays a part in its current trendiness: you can eat for as cheap as $4 in local restaurants.

As for safety, pickpocketing and scamming are rife, but most of the crime is nonviolent, and can be easily thwarted by exercising certain precautions, such as keeping valuables out of sight––iPhones in pockets and no flashing that smart watch!––and avoiding suburban areas.

Córdoba, Argentina

Buenos Aires’ less-famous yet equally beautiful sister, Córdoba, is a bustling metropolis over 3 million residents call home––among them, an increasing number of expats and nomads looking to beat BA’s volatile prices and dollarized markets.

As it pertains to culture, it lays claim to Manzana Jesuítica, a large Jesuit complex comprising 17th-century cloisters and churches, the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, one of the oldest in South America, and a Neo-Baroque cathedral.

Its many plazas, dating back to the period of colonial rule, are bordered by laid-back eateries and cozy cafes, with Shiok in particular hosting meetups and serving delicious coffee, and between inexpensive rent and affordable eating, monthly costs average $1,439.

Similarly to Buenos Aires, Córdoba is very safe by Latin American standards: that means violent crime isn’t widespread, and your main concern as a foreigner is the fear of bag-snatchers and avoiding carrying around large sums of money.

Montevideo, Uruguay

The compact, vibrant-all-the-same capital of Uruguay, Montevideo is a conurbation unfolding along the natural Montevideo Bay, centered around a colonial Plaza de la Independencia and boasting a high concentration of markets and cultural gems.

The Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) is packed with Spanish-era landmarks, including the remains of a citadel, and if you’re a lover of architecture, Montevideo’s eclectic collection of buildings, ranging from art deco to Renaissance to Neo-Gothic will take your breath away.

With its many steakhouses, Mercado del Puerto is great for grabbing a bite to eat, and if you’re looking for a more intellectual environment to get some work done, and one that exudes Old World charm, at that, the coffee shop at Libreria Puro Verso is where to go.

When it comes to safety, you know how it goes: violence affecting foreigners is almost completely unheard of, but you shouldn’t let your guard down in public spaces if you intend on leaving Uruguay with your MacBook.

Despite popular belief, Napa is not the only major wine town in California. In fact, it’s not even the biggest in the state.

Lodi may take the cake on that one, but it’s Santa Rosa that has made a name for itself in the wine world and also serves as a gateway into Napa, among other delightful towns nearby.

But let’s stick with Santa Rosa proper, an often overlooked city that’s suddenly been thrown into the spotlight this fall, especially with Alaska’s new flights from Vegas.

So, why visit Santa Rosa other than to go winery-hopping?

The city of 177,000 people is surrounded by beautiful landscapes you can’t help but want to explore.
