While I personally embrace my freakdom, many travelers prefer a rinse-and-repeat vacation, following the crowd as if it’s the only option on the table.

But we like to live up to our name and put the ‘Off Path’ bit to good use.

That’s why we believe these 5 nearly unheard-of countries offer the biggest surprises since they’re all finally embracing tourism in 2026.

Angola: Africa’s Next Beach & Safari Hotspot 🇦🇴

Africa is a bucket-list destination through and through, from the epic beaches of Cape Town to bearing witness to gorillas in Rwanda.

We’ll leave that to you to decide, but the latest news is that Morocco has claimed victory, asserting sovereignty over this off-path swath of desolate desert, sprinkled with cultural villages and an incredible coastline.

The “Stans” aren’t just a crazed group of Eminem fans. In the travel-sphere, they’re commonly an overlooked group of neighboring countries many deem too far-flung to check out.

While fellow ‘stan’ Uzbekistan has been all the rage on socials due to its meticulously detailed palaces and inviting culture, Turkmenistan is on the opposite end of the spectrum, quite frankly known for being down-right bizarre with eerily quiet streets and ghost-town vibes despite its vast urban sprawl.

Like my ex told me when I let her go, notoriously uptight Turkmenistan is saying they’re ready to change.

Bangladesh’s chaotic, garbage-riddled capital is not what the country is promoting.

They want more travelers to discover their coastline — such places as Cox’s Bazar.

This is where security forces, lifeguards, and cleanup crews are being added to keep this surprising slice of paradise feeling like the kind of beach destination travelers actually daydream about, hoping to catch the eye of thrill-seekers looking for a new passport stamp.

Cox’s Bazar is anything from “Dhaka on the beach” per se. It’s wide, sandy shores, jet ski rentals, and cheap resorts like Sayeman Beach really do prove Bangladesh has a legitimate beach destination worth bragging about.

This Lake Paradise Would Be Europe’s Top Destination If Travelers Knew About It

As more tourism titans become old news, travelers are saying “yes!” to more adventurous destinations.

We at Travel Off Path have lost count of how many ‘hidden gems’ we’ve reported on that broke all-time visitor records in recent years.

But what we’re sure of is that if one of our most beloved hideaways was more mainstream, it could very well be Europe’s most popular destination.

Far more mesmerizing than the Eiffel Tower, incomparably less gritty than Athens, just as gorgeous as Lake Como, and free of locals demanding tourists leave their city, little-known North Macedonia beholds a diamond in the rough worth the adventure here.

Not to hijack my own article with unwanted opinions, but my impromptu weekend getaway instantly made this serene lake paradise one of my all-time favorite destinations — not just in Europe, but all 44 countries I’ve (mostly) had the pleasure of visiting.

It’s the type of place you mean it when you say “I could live here”. And what seasoned traveler hasn’t found themselves uttering those very words?

Without further ado, let’s dive into Ohrid, North Macedonia, a true Balkan gem waiting to be discovered in one of Europe’s least-visited countries.

The Lake Town Where Every Day Is ‘Sunday Funday’

Full disclosure: When I was young, I looked forward to communion at church only because I hoped (and probably prayed) they’d mix up wine for grape juice.

Needless to say, that never came to fruition.

But if there’s ever one getaway you can make a ‘Sunday Funday’, it’s gotta be Ohrid.

Every day feels like Sunday here as the vibe is so relaxed that I couldn’t believe my taxi driver refused to start the engine until he finished his newspaper read (yep, newspapers still exist).

Not only does time tick more slowly here, but there’s literally a church for every day of the year.

It’s true, Ohrid is historically said to have had 365 churches — some more intact than others as many date back centuries, which is why it’s been dubbed the “Slavic Jerusalem”.

Wandering the storied townscape never gets old, even when you need to take a breather with all the twists, turns, and hills, because you just never know what timeless marvel is around the corner, from staggering fortresses to Byzantine cathedrals, and beautiful mosques, since this town is surprisingly diverse.

Lake Como Beauty Without Crowds Or High Prices

If there’s one European lake we all have atop our travel wishlist, it’s typically Lake Como.

But again, that’s only because a majority of travelers not local to the Balkans simply don’t know Ohrid exists.

I sure didn’t when I randomly decided to hop aboard a bus from next-door Albania, but it’s been etched in my mind ever since.

“How do people not know about this place?” is what I kept asking myself, but the answer is easy.

It’s not as convenient to reach as the household names we all know and love, but this region is becoming trendier, especially amongst digital nomads, since North Macedonia offers a digital nomad visa.

That said, the sudden spike in popularity for nomads hasn’t changed Ohrid’s identity.

It’s still remarkably affordable across the board, whether it’s boutique hotels, sunset cruises, local wine, an array of international cuisine, or fresh catch from the lake (definitely order trout!).

Heck, even flights are cheap since the budget airline Wizz Air anchors Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD).

Lake Ohrid is one of the most beautiful destinations I’ve ever been to, whether it’s Old Town’s winding cobbled walkways or the glassy lake itself, backed by rolling mountains on one side and a whitewashed, red-tiled townscape visible from various boardwalks over open water.

Views just don’t get any better, and other travelers’ reviews back it up, too.

Let’s dive in, shall we?</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>North Korea: Thanks, Captain Obvious</strong> 🇰🇵</h2> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Tourists-walking-in-downtown-Pyongyang-North-Korea.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Unless you’re Dennis Rodman, you may not have any desire to visit what’s known as the “Hermit Kingdom”, but hear us out…</p> <p><strong>Americans have officially been banned from entering North Korea</strong>, one of the most isolated and tightly controlled nations on Earth, <strong>since 2017</strong>, after the horror story of U.S. citizen Otto Warmbier being detained and tragically passing for reasons still yet to be officially determined.</p> <p>In fairness, we’ll let you play judge and jury, but no matter which borders you find yourself in, travelers are expected to respect local laws anywhere in the world. U.S. officials have long warned that Americans face an unusually high risk of arbitrary detention in North Korea, often without access to due process or consular services.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Korea-DMZ-from-South-Korea-perspective.jpg"></a></figure> <p>As a result, the <strong>U.S. government forbids citizens from entering North Korea to this day</strong>. In their own words, this decision is driven by “the serious risk of arrest and long-term detention”.</p> <p>Since the 2017 ban, North Korea has <strong>reopened for tours</strong>, even holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a surprisingly impressive new beach resort last year.</p> <p>But Americans will not have a chance to visit even if they dared as the U.S. <a href="https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/2025-05-16/national/northKorea/US-to-extend-North-Korea-travel-ban-until-August-next-year/2308752" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extended</a> this ban <strong>until August 2026</strong>.</p> <p>The closest you can currently get to breathing North Korea’s smog-filled air is the famous demilitarized zone (DMZ) in South Korea, but even then, we hear it’s pretty tense!</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Cuba: Vacation Mode Deactivated </strong>🇨🇺</h3> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Tricycle-passing-colorful-row-of-historic-buildings-in-Havana-Cuba.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Want to visit one of the most timeless destinations on the planet where Starbucks has yet to ruin colonial facades?</p> <p>Then you’re sort of in luck….</p> <p><strong>Cuba <em>does</em> welcome U.S. citizens</strong> and <a href="https://expedia.com/affiliate/SdNrdPO" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow">does have resorts</a>, but you shouldn’t call yourself a “tourist” at all at any time or you could potentially face harsh penalties.</p> <p>Americans are technically prevented from vacationing in Cuba, meaning if you do want to visit this timeworn Caribbean paradise, you have to do some extra planning (and perhaps even convincing).</p> <p>You see, the current Administration issued a <a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/americans-banned-from-vacationing-in-iconic-caribbean-island-for-5-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">5-year ban</a> on Americans vacationing here, while also understanding Cuba thrives on tourism, given their stringent government.</p> <p>By the way, this is nothing new. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Senior-Writer-Sam-Sears-on-Havana-Cuba-beach-in-2017-2.jpg"></a></figure> <p>I had the pleasure of (minus extreme food poisoning) visiting Havana in 2017, when decades-long icy tensions began to thaw, and I still had to claim “Support for the Cuban people” as a reason to visit and book an Airbnb to align with my reasoning.</p> <p>But look at babyfaced me — he sure looks like he’s on “vacation” (if you catch my drift). 😉</p> <p>Kidding aside, in order to legally visit Cuba in accordance with current policy, you must claim one of 12 categories found <a href="https://cu.usembassy.gov/services/traveling-to-cuba/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>.</p> <p>For the record, I was never questioned for claiming “Support for the Cuban People” at any time.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Niger: Visas No Longer Issued To Americans 🇳🇪</strong></h3> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Grand-Mosque-of-Agadez-in-Niger.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Look, we get it — it’s highly unlikely many Americans are scoping out Niger as a vacation destination any time soon.</p> <p>This off-path African nation is one of <span style="box-sizing: border-box;">the aforementioned <em>Level 4</em> destinations we mentioned</span>…</p> <p>While every country has its own unique appeal, we won’t pretend Niger is the latest up-and-coming African country — that would be <a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/undiscovered-mediterranean-country-named-among-top-destinations-for-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Algeria</a>.</p> <p>However, Niger (along with Chad) has implemented ‘tit-for-tat’ bans on U.S. tourists despite certainly needing an economic boost.</p> <p>Niger is one of the countries America has restricted as of late for the foreseeable future, and Niger has pulled the ol’ “if you can do it, I can do it” maneuver.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Traditional-mud-and-clay-homes-in-Niger.jpg"></a></figure> <p>According to our <a href="https://apanews.net/niger-makes-tit-for-tat-visa-restrictions-on-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sources</a>, an undisclosed diplomat was quoted as saying, Niger is completely and permanently prohibiting the issuance of visas to all U.S. citizens and indefinitely banning entry to its territory for nationals of the United States”.</p> <p>So, why is Chad not listed too?</p> <p>That’s a tricky one. <span style="box-sizing: border-box;">While Chad was one of the first to implement a ban on U.S. tourism for the very same reason, it is <a href="https://td.usembassy.gov/alert-update-on-visa-and-entry-ban-for-u-s-citizens-june-12-2025/" target="_blank">still allowing</a> those who were issued a visa <em>before</em> <strong>June 9, 2025</strong>.</span></p> <p>*<em>Right before publishing, we discovered <strong>Mali</strong> and <strong>Burkina Faso</strong> are following suit with their own <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgrdjx1d1vjo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reciprocal policies</a>, refusing to honor entry to U.S. citizens. The good news is that crew workers will be around to assist if you’re confused about where to go.</p> <p>If only they were this helpful in Iceland with their Middle-earth directions…</p> <p>“Yeah, just take the bus to Hallgrímskirkja”…Okay, buddy….</p> <p>While some locals are trying to wrap their heads around the new launch (and if it was worth the long wait), what’s most impressive and well thought out is the buildout of Lelepaua Station, which is built into the airport complex itself, so you truly can hop off the plane and hit the ground runnin’ Travel Off Path style!</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The New Train Skips Waikiki</strong></h3> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Waikiki-Beach-hotels.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Look, we love a good Chinatown when we see one, but nobody is flying across the ocean to slurp delicious spicy noodles and sip green tea.</p> <p>Travelers are visiting Hawaii for a variety of reasons, but it all boils down to nature in one form or another, and there’s arguably no better place in the city than world-famous Waikiki Beach.</p> <p>Local experts at the <a href="https://beatofhawaii.com/honolulu-rail-reaches-airport-after-14-years-but-not-where-visitors-need-to-go/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beat of Hawaii</a> bring up a valid point — if such a gargantuan task to connect the airport by rail is going to take well over a decade, why not fine-tune the details to take travelers where they really want to go?</p> <p>Besides the airport’s own station, the only other notable stop is Kahauiki / Kalihi Transit Center Station, a popular bus transfer hub.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Solo-traveler-visiting-Honolulus-Waikiki-Beach.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Did they miss the mark? Ultimately, time will tell. </p> <p><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Though there’s one aspect that hits the nail on the head, and one that <em>all</em> tourists will appreciate, given the state’s notorious high prices.</span></p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>$3 Rail Beats Headache-Inducing Traffic & Double-Digit Uber Fares</strong></h3> <p>Sorry, Hawaiians.
