To no surprise, London, Paris, and Barcelona are not Europe’s cheapest destinations.

With a name like Travel Off Path, sometimes you have to do just that to save the big bucks.

A new U.K. based report unveiled explicit details as far as pricing goes, listing 4 underrated cities that are well worth your while for an affordable Euro-trip.

Some trendy, some lesser-known, and one being one of Europe’s all-time biggest comeback stories, all of them are vibrant, cultural, and very under-hyped.

I’ve had the fortune of visiting a couple of them, and already have the other pair on my wishlist — not only to stretch my budget on my next globetrotting jaunt, but to experience more authentic cities without the fluff of Europe’s icons.

4) Belgrade, Serbia

As a former capital of Yugoslavia, you might think Serbia’s capital is drab and stale, but I was blown away in my brief stopover in Belgrade.

Yeah, you have to get used to cigarette smoke at seemingly every restaurant, but wandering the gritty yet grand streetscape couldn’t have been more refreshing for a sense of discovery.

I can attest that Belgrade is cheap. It doesn’t matter if it’s your hotel, a local beer, or a taste of back home at Mickey D’s, you won’t go broke enjoying a city break here, which is one of many reasons why digital nomads in particular love it.

Another reason is safety. Long gone are the days of Belgrade being defined by 1990’s headlines.

Travelers currently give Serbia a safety score of 86/100 on our Safety Index, though I will say Belgrade is the only place in all my travels where I’ve been randomly stopped by the police just to check my passport.

A bit sketchy, no?

3) Tirana, Albania

Another capital I’ve had the pleasure of visiting is Tirana, but full disclosure: the real highlight was the country next door.

Tirana is very underrated, especially if you’re a foodie.

Think Athens-style menus without the touristy prices, plus plentiful cafes where you can sip espresso with Mount Dajti in view and calls to prayer echoing in the background.

While this is another city digital nomads love for its safety and affordability across the board, Tirana’s real purpose, if we’re being honest, is a springboard to either Albania’s phenomenal coastline or to one of my favorite all-time destinations, Ohrid, North Macedonia — an easy bus ride away, and well worth it.

2) Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest is one of Europe’s unsung capitals for a myriad of reasons — one being you can Bucha-rest easy thanks to its thermal spas and leafy parks.

While some of its communist-era edges still show — or charm, depending on your appetite for concrete — overall, Bucharest is a delight to visit.

Whether you’re indulging in papanasi, a traditional fried donut to kickstart your day with a sugar rush, or wandering past architectural eye candy you didn’t expect, or taking a train ride out to hush-hush locales like Sinaia, this city is one of Europe’s easiest to plan out and stay long-term without busting your budget.

Little-known budget airline HiSky intended to make Bucharest so much more accessible for Americans with an exciting new Chicago-Bucharest route set for June 2026, but ultimately canceled.

However, they do still serve JFK, so East Coasters can still reach Bucharest with ease and be welcomed by a slightly Old Town, immaculate castles reminiscent of Dracula’s lair, grand boulevards, and cafe-lined streets that still feel wildly unknown.

1) Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

One of Europe’s most storied cities — for both better and worse — there’s no denying its insanely cheap and one of the continent’s best-kept secrets, not only for its historical significance, but for stunning nature, cafe culture, and fascinating East-meets-West atmosphere with a mish-mash of cultures, including Orthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats and Muslims.

Sarajevo can be a tear-jerker if you visit its captivating museums covering the Siege of Sarajevo and Bosnian War, but it can also feel like a celebration of resilience, with a maze of bazaars, cozy coffee houses, and plates of ćevapi that cost less than your morning Americano back home.

What makes Sarajevo especially special is how quickly the city changes around you — one minute it feels like an old-world bazaar, the next it looks like a grand European capital.

Here at Travel Off Path, we’re saying Virginia is for explorers — and if they happen to be lovers — that’s okay too.

You may know Virginia Beach, Arlington, and the trendy coastal oasis of Norfolk, but there’s another under-hyped city that Southern Living recently revealed that caught our eye.

Make that eyes. Plural. I’m not a pirate.

With summer just around the corner, you’d think this would be prime time for just about every destination.

However, this one considers summer as their shoulder season, yet still boasts astounding nature, a friendly small-town vibe, and mild weather unlike much of the country.

Move Over Asheville! Harrisonburg Should Be Your Summer Escape

Be sure to check the latest Travel Alerts before your trip.

Even though Asheville had a downturn after Mother Nature left her mark, it’s one of the most sought-after mountain towns in the South.

But Harrisonburg, Virginia is one of the best alternatives, especially since places like Asheville can feel like a sauna at the peak of summer.

Virginia’s best-kept secret rarely sees highs in the 90s, averaging about 85 degrees, while the rest of the South will be sweltering.

Not only does Harrisonburg offer splendid weather this time of year, but it’s also one of the state’s prettiest hideaways, as it’s sitting smack dab in the Shenandoah Valley with Blue Ridge mountain views in the distance.

Plus, it’s a college town, home to James Madison University. You know the beer is flowing just as much as Asheville — the perfect way to cap off a fun day exploring.

With hiking trails, scenic drives, the wonders of Shenandoah National Park, and nearby Massanutten all within easy reach, Harrisonburg gives you plenty of ways to earn a post-adventure pint.

“The Friendly City”

In the day and age of overtourism, where even some of America’s icons are losing their luster, it’s always nice to know you’re welcome when it comes time to cash in your PTO.

Harrisonburg is dubbed “The Friendly City”, and with good reason.

Virginia may be at the tip-top of the South, which seems like a borderline oxymoron, but quintessential southern hospitality is alive and well here.

This moniker dates back to at least 1930, and it’s holding on strong for almost a full century.

H-Burg backs it up with the kind of small-town warmth travelers hope to find when they’re tired of overpriced mountain towns that have started acting too cool for their own good (ahem, Aspen).

It’s also far more worldly than your average mountain town, shaped by refugee communities, Mennonite traditions, and local schools where dozens of languages are spoken — giving “The Friendly City” nickname a lot more merit than a catchy welcome sign.

In other words, Harrisonburg takes a come-one, come-all approach even with tourism. You’ll fit right in now matter your vibe and what brings you into town.

Why Summer Is The Perfect Time To Visit

Taking my Al Roker hat off for a moment, it’s not just the weather that’s a draw — it’s the lack of crowds.

You see, not that Harrisonburg specifically becomes a raging hotspot come fall, but Virginia’s countryside in general becomes a real-life postcard for leaf-peepers who love hitting the backroads with a warm PSL in hand.

While summer is still beautiful here, those same backroads feel even more open as those in the know about this town typically wait ’til fall.

That gives summer travelers the sweet spot: mountain views without the bumper-to-bumper scenic overlooks, patio weather without peak-season pricing, and easy access to Shenandoah Valley adventures before the autumn crowds roll in.

How Safe Is Harrisonburg?

Surely ‘friendly’ and safe go hand in hand, right?

Harrisonburg still meets the criteria to be called a hidden gem, therefore it didn’t make the cut for our Safety Index tool yet.

That said, we found an insightful local report suggesting Harrisonburg largely lives up to its “Friendly City” nickname — at least when it comes to feeling safe.

Violent crime is described as “low overall,” with the bigger concerns being property crime, car break-ins, and the occasional college-town shenanigans.

Basically, visitors shouldn’t feel on edge roaming around town, but don’t treat it like Mayberry either.

JetBlue Launching 2 New Flights To Colombia, Including Underrated Beach City

Shall we hold a moment of silence for Spirit Airlines?

We’ll let you grab a candle.

While travelers are busy mourning their favorite yellow planes, another favorite is already moving in.

JetBlue is helping fill the void for at least a pair of former Spirit destinations not commonly served.

Kidding aside, Spirit is the reason I fell in love with travel. I’ll never forget my $19 flight to Chicago that made me realize the whole “travel is expensive” myth isn’t always true.

That said, many believe airfare will now live up to that belief with less budget competition in the skies.

But JetBlue is arguably the coolest airline in America, and at least in this case, they’re saying not so fast by offering to match Spirit’s Free Spirit members.

No promotional fares were announced for the latest launch, but these 2 Colombian getaways still make a strong case for swapping yellow for blue from here on out.

JetBlue Launching New Flight To Cali 💃

Cue Biggie Smalls because you can soon be going, going, back, back to Cali, Cali.

Okay, not my San Diego Cali — but Cali, Colombia.

When I visited Colombia for the first time in 2015, I opted for Medellin, one of trendiest cities in Latin America at the time, yet even then, fellow travelers I met asked why I didn’t choose Cali.

The truth is I was by no means a so-called “travel expert” back then, but this city has long been held as a Colombian must-visit despite some security concerns.

The reason travelers love it are simple. It’s cheap, vibrant, and cultural to the point this inland city feels alive at all hours.

As the “Salsa Capital”, there’s never a dull moment. The problem is it hasn’t mean nearly as easy to get to as Medellin and Bogota.

Since Spirit went kaput, their Fort Lauderdale route is now underserved, but JetBlue is here to save the day, by taking over that very route:

Another underserved destination is Barranquilla, one of Colombia’s unsung beach destinations.

Currently, there are only 2 U.S. flights here since Spirit gave itself the pink slip.

So, why visit?

Barranquilla is the last major city that still feels like a hidden gem. Largely overshadowed by Cartagena sharing the same coastline and hotspot newcomer Santa Marta next door, closer to Venezuela, this urban sprawl of 1.2 million people also boasts a beautiful Caribbean shoreline in such places as Puerto Colombia and Pradomar.

Seen more as a river port city than a beach destination, this is one of those classic mixups leaving it to feel undiscovered.

Parque Isla de Salamanca is a destination unto itself, too — a mangrove-laced national park between Barranquilla and Santa Marta where wetlands, lagoons, and wildlife replace the typical umbrella-drink version of the Caribbean we typically seek out.

Picture vivid blue Caribbean waves, empty sandbars, and flamingos cutting across the sky without the selfie-stick crowds you’d find in Aruba.

While Barranquilla is so under-hyped, it didn’t make the cut for our Safety Index — yet — its trendy neighbor Santa Marta sure did with a score of 65/100, and they easily pair being just 2 hours away from each other:

It’s easy to double-dip your trip and visit both cities. Since you’re likely here for the beach anyway, you might as well squeeze Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona into your plans, as it’s one of Colombia’s bucket-list destinations.

These Are The Top 5 Underrated European Capitals For 2026

We’ve all heard extensively of Paris and its glamorous Haussmann-designed boulevards and soaring Eiffel, London with the red telephone boxes and unmissable Victorian clock, and Madrid’s grand boulevards and imperial parks.

That’s the itinerary of every tourist going to Europe for the first time, and while we’re not really mad at them—these hotspots are famous for a reason—we can’t help but feel they’re not exactly the best representation of a raw, authentic Old Continent without the Disneyfication of it, if you know what we mean.

Everything seems too polished, too perfect, and too movie-like, and don’t get us wrong, we love a bit of daydreaming and storybook vibes ourselves, but sometimes, it’s the grungier, quirky, unexpected corners that truly take it there for us.

We’re called Travel Off Path, after all.

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Underrated and Balkan go hand in hand, and there’s no more unsung, crossroads-of-civilizations, criminally-overlooked capital than Sarajevo, the administrative heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Now, Bosnia itself is a modern mish-mash of cultures, including Orthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats, and a majority of Muslim Bosniaks, so it’s only fair that the capital city would be reflective of the nation’s diverse character.

In the heart of Baščaršija, the Muslim-majority area, you’ll find the landmark Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, an icon of Ottoman architecture, and one of the most prominent mosques in the Balkans. With the bazaar-style shops, cobbled streets, and ornate ablution fountains, the whole area truly feels like a slice of Turkey.

The craziest part? Walk some 6 minutes from the Muslim quarter of town, and you’ll hit the Sacred Heart Cathedral, a neo-Gothic marvel surrounded by Austro-Hungarian buildings, Central Europe-style café terraces, and tram-rattled boulevards.

Sarajevo still has one more trick up its sleeve. Right around the corner from the Catholic cathedral, there stands a massive Orthodox Cathedral, catering to the local Serb population, anchored by ćevapi spots and coffee houses.

Tie it all together, Sarajevo has a fascinating local history:

Its scenic Latin Bridge, spanning the Miljacka River, is where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, an event that infamously triggered World War I, and all around the Old Quarter, you can still spot scars of the bloody Bosnian War of the 90s, from bullet holes to sniper signage and abandoned shells of buildings.

Berlin may have the war-era hype, but Sarajevo feels like the real deal.

Tirana, Albania

Balkan capitals for the win.

Now, listen, Tirana’s not really somewhere you go for insanely beautiful architecture, picture-perfect corners that scream Europe, or that quaint, lovely Old World feel, but it feels inebriatingly authentic and gritty.

Even if it’s, hem, a little rough around the edges.

You see, Albania was stuck under an iron-fisted communist rule for many decades, and Tirana may have taken the brunt of that. While smaller Albanian towns like Berat and Gjirokaster still have a hint of a medieval charm, much of the capital’s historic flair was flattened or overwritten.

No castles, hardly any cobbled lanes, nor showstopping façades.

What you get today is an eclectic mix of modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers that don’t really seem to follow a strict urban pattern, commie-style apartment blocks that wouldn’t exactly look out of place in Russia, and weird, but incredibly cool Brutalist installations that will defy your sense of a European cityscape.

Want an example? Tirana Pyramid is an icon of the skyline, originally built in the 80s as a museum dedicated to Enver Hoxha, the communist leader at the time. After the fall of communism, the bunker-like structure became an exhibition space, a conference hall, and even a temporary TV station.

Now, it’s just a climbing spot for locals to catch the sunset over Tirana’s minarets and gleaming new high-rises.

Hoxha didn’t stop there: he was terrified Albania would eventually be invaded and overrun, so he built an insane amount of bunkers across the country.

One of the main ones is right in the capital, Bunk’Art, now a massive underground museum depicting life under the regime.

It’s dark, claustrophobic, and even a little unsettling, yet it’s one of the most eye-opening experiences you can do in town. Other than, of course, swinging by the Blloku district to explore the stylish café scene, or walking the serene footpaths looping around the big Artificial Lake in the middle of the metropolis.

Albania has had a reputation for being one of the dodgier, more obscure countries in Europe, but it’s come a looong way since its dark early noughties days. This is what travelers have been reporting as of late:

Nicosia, Cyprus

The Last Divided Capital in Europe, Nicosia is a sad, yet fascinating tale, and a modern Berlin of the sorts that never quite got its reunification.

For context, Cyprus is a Greek-majority island-nation in the East Mediterranean with a Turkish minority. In the 70s, Turkey invaded it and occupied roughly a third of the territory, including the northern half of Nicosia, effectively splitting the city in half.

The jingoistically-Greek south is currently administered by the internationally-recognized Republic of Cyprus, a member of the European Union, whereas the northern part of town is under the jurisdiction of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

No international recognition, no EU membership, but effectively its own country, nonetheless.

The division was never settled, and this remains one of the most contentious topics in geopolitics to this day. In practice, if you’re visiting Ledra Street in Nicosia today, the main thoroughfare running through the heart of the capital, you’ll eventually hit a roadblock:

There’s a border post right in the middle of the street, and in order to get from here to there, you’ll need to show your passport.

The green line running along the UN Buffer Zone is also fascinating to watch, with coffeeshops and taverna terraces literally lining barricaded alleys and narrow streets, and barbed wire providing the backdrop.

In the south, expect to pay for your unequivocally-Greek gyros in euros, and don’t be surprised by the amount of Orthodox churches per square mile. Cross north, however, and it’s the Islamic call to prayer blasting from old Ottoman minarets, old caravanserai hosting lively bazaars, and the Turkish half-moon everywhere.

If you’re going to Cyprus this year, make sure you double check the security situation beforehand. The island is dangerously-close to the Middle East, and it’s been directly-impacted by the ongoing conflict:

Bern, Switzerland

Now, here’s something you might not know about Switzerland. As much as people mistakenly peg Zurich (or, on occasion, Geneva) as the capital, neither of the country’s top financial hubs holds that title.

In fact, no city officially does, but ask any Swiss where the national capital is, and they’ll point to the much-smaller, quaint, unassuming Bern, tucked right near the Alps.

Switzerland has no official capital on paper, so to keep all its wildly diverse, culturally distinct cantons on equal footing. That said, Bern—home to about 133,000 people—concentrates a majority of the federal institutions.

But it’s far from being just another administrative hub, and that’s why it’s so quietly charming.

It’s a capital-like town with a real European soul.

The medieval core is one of the most beautiful you’ll ever see: cobbled lanes winding along ocher-colored arcaded buildings, landmark clock towers tunneled for modern trams, and palace terraces overlooking snow-capped peaks.

No wonder it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Don’t miss Zytglogge, the medieval clock with its moving figurines that is Bern’s pride and joy, and Münster (Bern Cathedral), where climbing the tower gives epic views of the city’s grid-like streets and the surrounding nature.

The winding, turquoise Aare River only adds to the alpine charm.

Zagreb, Croatia

I’m sure you’re familiar with Dubrovnik’s imposing medieval walls, hugged by the Adriatic Sea, and the glamorous Split Riva, with its palm trees and Ancient Roman flair, but who’d have thought Croatia’s capital would be anything but Mediterranean in character?

The Balkan gem may be best known for its pebbly beaches, Dalmatian stone houses, and summery aesthetics, but Zagreb, its one true metropolis, lies much further inland, practically touching Central Europe, and it actually wouldn’t look out of place in either Hungary or Austria.

Instead of waterfront promenades and laid-back coffeeshop terraces, you get wide avenues lined with Habsburg edifices, palatial complexes housing art museums, and leafy parks and plazas pulsating with city life.

The Upper Town (Gornji Grad) feels like a living museum, with narrow streets twisting past pastel-hue buildings and centuries-old churches. The beautiful St. Mark’s, with its kaleidoscopic tiled roof, is effectively the city’s symbol.

A short stroll downhill, past the soaring Zagreb Cathedral, perhaps the largest Gothic offering south of the Alps, and you’ll reach the Lower Town (Donji Grad), home to lively squares, buzzing boulevards, and pedestrianized thoroughfares flanked by bakeries and boutique shops.

Ban Jelačić Square is the central meeting point where locals, tourists, street performers, and tram lines converge, a perfect snapshot of Zagreb life.

Zagreb isn’t exactly as grand as Paris, nor as vast as London, but it’s a cultural powerhouse in its own understated way. It’s simply a shame most of the beach-obsessed tourists skip it altogether.

Out of all 1,500 articles I’ve written for Travel Off Path, what we’re revealing today is one of the most shocking at first glance.

Living up to our name, one of the most off-path Dutch cities turns out not to be so overlooked at all.

We’ve covered The Netherlands end to end over the years — or so we thought.

Apparently, there’s been a well-kept secret about one artsy, off-the-wall tech hub that’s becoming one of the country’s coolest cities.

Some visitors have called it “boring”, but we’re calling it the “anti-Amsterdam” — in a good way.

Crushing tourism records in 2025, and surprisingly embracing even more visitors with an exciting new train route in the works, the lesser-known city of Eindhoven is the Netherlands’ new must-visit.

PLUS, the Netherlands is largely considered one of the safest countries in the world as you can see below.

Wait — The Netherlands Actually Wants You To Visit?

While Amsterdam’s Karens may still be in full force as the iconic European city rolled out multiple anti-tourism campaigns in recent years, that’s not a reflection of the entire country.

There are endless canal-laden alternatives with equally gorgeous waterways for more spacious strolls and bike rides, but Eindhoven is one of the more unique city breaks that doesn’t mirror Amsterdam much at all.

While one could argue the entire country is a bit quirky, that’s really the only true comparison.

But yes, Eindhoven isn’t settling with its record 2025 year for tourism, welcoming a tick under 7 million passengers at Eindhoven Airport.

They’re doubling down on trains.

Obviously, America is slacking in the train department. Heck, since I paid my California taxes today, I’m wondering how much actually went to the high-speed rail project that seems like it’ll never come to fruition.

We all know that’s not the case for Europe, though, where you can seemingly hop aboard a train anywhere.

Eindhoven has reached an agreement with Brussels for what’s being touted as a game-changing rail route for the region, set to connect this quietly booming city to Belgium’s elegant capital.

Here’s what we know so far:

A new Eindhoven–Brussels rail link is officially in motion after signing a letter of intent
Talks will continue this summer; the holdup is deciding between new infrastructure or sprucing up an existing rail network
The goal is to cut down on the clunky transfers currently needed between Eindhoven and Brussels

The “Anti-Amsterdam”: Why Eindhoven Feels Like A Breath Of Fresh Air

Yes, Eindhoven has a scenic canal, but it’s not the selling point of the city like Amsterdam’s and others that build their whole brand around them.

This city has a real identity beyond tourism clichés.

Despite flying under the radar, those in the know come here because Eindhoven has carved out a reputation as a creative, forward-thinking city fueled by design, innovation, and repurposed industrial spaces, such as Strijp-S, one of the coolest hangouts there is.

Not to circle back to Belgium, but if you’ve followed us lately, you know that Antwerp is another hip up-and-comer, which may be the closest comparison as a trendsetter.

Additionally, Eindhoven was crowned the “least stressful city in the world”, which some visitors in the past have surmised to be boring, but that’s not the case.

Gdańsk

Straddling the Baltic Sea, on one of the most beautiful, yet lesser-visited regions in Europe—hello Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn—Gdańsk is a fourth regional capital of the sorts. It currently exists under Poland, but it was once German, at one point, even a powerful city state in its own right.

Though severely damaged in World War II, it saw a complete makeover in recent times, with much of the beautiful medieval center being restored to its former glory.

We’re talking those beautiful skinny townhouses, three to four storeys tops, covered in colorful German motifs, winding streets lined with decorated front porches that spill onto the cobblestones, and a monumental red-brick church, St. Mary’s, towering above gabled roofs.

Truly, the townscape here looks like the closest thing you can get to a storybook scene in real life.

To the culture buffs out there, don’t miss the Żuraw, Europe’s best-preserved medieval crane, perched on the banks of Motława River. WWII enthusiast? Westerplatte, on the outskirts of town, just happens to be the place where it all started, where Germans first invaded and kickstarted the war.

Craving that lively milk bar vibe, with delicious pierogi and malt-rich draught beer? Check out the canteen-style Bar Turystyczny. Yep, it’s literally called Tourist Bar, but it’s the best kind of tourist trap you’ll ever walk into, and psst… want to know a secret? Even locals secretly love it.

Poland Entry Rules Are Changing

Poland is changing its Entry Requirements this year in line with the European Union’s new directives. Soon enough, Americans will need to get fingerprinted and registed digitally upon arriving to Poland.

Later in the year, a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization (ETIAS) will be enforced, meaning you can no longer travel to Poland, or the wider EU, completely visa-free.

Toruń

I’m not sure about you, but given his Latin-sounding name, I once believed Nicolaus Copernicus would have been born somewhere in Italy. I was way off-mark on this one.

He actually hails from Toruń, a quaint Polish city overlooking the fast-flowing Vistula, boasting one of Poland’s best-preserved medieval architecture ensembles. The real deal, not another post-WWII reconstruction.

Unlike most Polish cities that were completely ravaged by war, Toruń was left pretty much untouched, and that’s what makes it special (and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I guess).

Everything you see, from the Hanseatic-style brick walls surrounding the city, to its timeless stone-paved thoroughfares, to the (rather-large) Main Square, host to a Gothic Town Hall.

Remember Copernicus? You can even visit his aged-brick, step-roofed medieval house over at Kopernika St. 15/17. Whether you’re here simply to admire the practically-intact 15th-century abode, or geek out with the whole ‘Earth goes around the Sun’ thing, it’s that one spot you absolutely cannot miss.

By the way, did you know Poland’s most famous gingerbread is from here? Not just another bland souvenir package for wide-eyed Americans, Toruń’s pierniki is baked using the same recipe from the 16th-century, and if you find the original spiced loaf bland, there’s a whole myriad of modern flavors to try.

Just hit up any street-corner bakery in the Old Town.

Poznań

We like to call this the mini Kraków, with maybe about less than a third of the latter’s maddening crowds.

Poznań boasts what’s probably the prettiest square in the entire country, so big it has room for a number of medieval monuments you’ve probably never heard of it. For starters, there’s the soaring Renaissance Town Hall, with its mechanical clock and castle-like demure.

Every day at noon sharp, two animated goat figures throttle out of the main tower, butt their heads twelve times, and retreat to mark the hour.

They’re Poznań’s most-recognized symbol, and an ode to the city’s clockmaking tradition.

Right beside it, the Cloth Hall is a row of aesthetic wall-to-wall buildings painted in bright pastel colors, sitting above arcades with charming café terraces tucked behind them.

Only a few steps from the stunning square, the Fara Church is a pink-stone Baroque masterpiece with a lavish interior. Gilded altars, heavenly frescoes, and impressive stuccowork… and no, it’s not the cathedral.

Poznań’s 1,000-year-old Bishop’s seat sits on Cathedral Island, a leisurely 20-minute walk along a scenic riverfront. A bit out of the way, sure, but its twinning Gothic towers, imposing main portal, and haunting interior are definitely worth a visit.

By the way, if you’re wondering how safe is Poland these days, considering the ongoing war in Eastern Europe, and the volatile state of geopolitics, you’ll be glad to know travelers on the ground report very few, if any crime-related incidents:

Szczecin

Just in case you’re wondering how that should even sit on your lips, it’s something like Sh-tsh-eh-cheen.

Yet another lovechild of Germany and Poland, Szczecin is cut through by the Oder River, which empties straight into the Baltic Sea. Much like Gdańsk, except even more offbeat.

Once a Prussian (a.k.a. German) maritime hub before it fell into Polish hands, it’s markedly different from your average Polish city, with wider boulevards, a radial street plan reminiscent of Paris or Milan, and an imposing castle dominating the skyline.

That’s the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle, a whitewashed beauty overlooking the maze-like Old Town and its riverfront.

Wawel Castle in Kraków gets all the hype, but Szczecin’s lesser-known medieval stronghold is even more visually striking.

Think multiple Renaissance-era wings, massive brick walls, sturdy towers, and endless refined courtyards.

In the Old Town’s heart, St. James Cathedral is just as picturesque, with a massive Gothic brick tower you can climb for panoramic city views. Nearby, the Old Town Market Square is ringed by colorful restored townhouses and quirky coffeeshops.

If visiting soon, come in summer: Chrobry Embankment’s terraced riverside, with picnic spots and winding paths, captures the soul of this Hanseatic powerhouse.

This Underrated & Safe Latin American Country Is Breaking All Time Tourism Records

When you think of El Salvador, the first images your brain conjures up are probably those of rioting gangs running amok, crime-ridden streets where the law of the strongest prevails, and, as is the case in Latin America, probably corrupt governments.

That used to be the case some five or six years ago, and then a literal miracle happened.

From a global pariah and one of the most violent countries in the world, with a shocking rate of murder per capita and urban violence, to the Switzerland of the Western Hemisphere, this tiny Central American state is now shattering another type of record.

Not to beat around the bush too much, tourists are finally flocking there in droves, and the newfound state of well-being is only part of the reason why:

El Salvador Is Living Its Golden Age Right Now

As reported by Costatur, El Salvador has already hosted over 815,000 guests so far this year, with a goal of hitting 4.2 million by December 2026.

That’s a bold strategy, especially considering that, back in 2019, prior to the current administration taking charge, it hosted roughly 1.3 million tourists annually, a large number of whom were returning El Salvadorians or business travelers.

Now, it seems the tides are turning.

El Salvador has Nayib Bukele, its controversial, hardline yet tough-on-crime President, to thank. Say what you will, he did put the house in order.

He incarcerated around 1% of the population in a major crackdown on violent crime, launched a ‘Territorial Control Plan’ to seize control of gang-dominated areas, and invested heavily in infrastructure projects.

We’re talking roads, bridges, public works, a whole makeover of the country’s largest airport, El Salvador International Airport (SAL), a renovation of the capital’s once-derelict Historic Center, and a clear, resounding message sent out to foreigners saying:

El Salvador is safe. Come visit.

Not just empty words, either: in 2019, the country had a jaw-dropping rate of 38 homicides per 100,000. In 2025, that staggering figure had dropped to just about 1.3.

For comparison purposes, Switzerland, one of Europe’s poster children for safety standards and well-being, has a homicide rate of 0.6. El Salvador is quickly bridging the gap.

On the ground, this means no more armed assaults, or at least a drastic reduction in those, home burglaries, and turf wars.

The Europenization Of San Salvador

On top of that, the Bukele administration is literally converting San Salvador, the national capital, in a city break actually worth spending money on.

No more of the hanging wires between buildings, piling trash, nor dodgy, low-cap Josés looking at you funny for being an obvious gringo: San Salvador’s once-glorious colonial core is being revitalized, with the addition of pedestrian-friendly zones, lamp-lit paved streets, and major infrastructure upgrades.

You’ve probably seen Before/After videos of it doing the rounds on X. The easiest way to explain it is this may be the first case of First Worldization ever seen in Latin America.

Perhaps not the most politically correct statement to make, but not one bit less truthful.

Millions of tourists are now headed for San Salvador to witness firsthand its rebirth, from the grandiose Metropolitan Cathedral, a Neo-Gothic marvel towering above the downtown’s mid-rises, to the restored National Palace and the leafy, sun-drenched Plaza Libertad.

A Magnificent Nature Practically Unspoiled

Much like Costa Rica at one point, El Salvador also has a lot of potential, nature-wise, that is yet to be unleashed.

All along its Pacific coast, you’ll find beautiful golden-sand or even black volcanic beaches, backed by lively surfer towns which are trending with European backpackers as of late.

As far as major coastal hubs go, La Libertad is probably the place to go at the moment: it boasts some of the best surf breaks in Central America, including Punta Roca, known for its long, barrelling waves, El Tunco, one of the prettiest beaches in the entire country, and a relaxed, fishing town vibe.

For the hiking enthusiasts, Santa Ana Volcano, or as it is known in the local indigenous language, Ilamatepec, offers breathtaking crater views, and a glassy, mirror-like laguna sitting right in the middle.

Though lesser-explored, Izalco Volcano is not to be missed: called the Lighthouse of the Pacific, due to its constant, fiery lava shows, visible to ships far out at sea, it’s surrounded by lush jungle and historic coffee plantations.

For a more convenient and easier-to-reach spot, just outside San Salvador, El Boquerón is yet another volcano with equally spectacular crater panoramas.

Looking for some of those cloud forests, with winding trails, views of multiple lava-spewers, and harboring a rich wildlife? Cerro Verde National Park is a short 45–60 minute drive from the city, out in the western highlands, and it looks like a mini Costa Rica, except less developed, and more off-path.

Just how we like it.

Oh, and don’t forget Santa Ana, a picturesque town near the park, often described as El Salvador’s most beautiful. It is dominated by a Gothic cathedral, one of the largest in Central America, and its colonial downtown, dotted with colorful plazas, centuries-old buildings, and cobbled streets, is an absolute delight to wander.

Combarro: Spain’s Most Welcoming Paradise

We’re not saying Combarra has Spain’s most vibrant beaches, but we are saying it’s high on the list for best vibes.

Lining the calm waterfront are stone hórreos purposed for food storage in its early days, but now serve as a prime spot to take in the views of traditional Galician architecture and blissful Ría de Pontevedra.

The closest major city just so happens to be one of Spain’s fastest growing, despite being a mouthful to say.

Santiago de Compostela — I need to pause and brag I typed that right on my first try — is one of Europe’s most underrated getaways, but one that’s been slowly making a name for itself as overtourism plagued Spain’s household names.

This city is brimming with culture and epic eats and makes for a perfect springboard into Combarro since Americans can fly nonstop here via United beginning May 2026.

It’s true, you don’t have to fly to the opposite side of Spain only to circle back, so really it’s not as off-path as it seems.

According to popular rail operator Renfe, train tickets are only $9 from Santiago de Compostela to neighboring Pontevedra, another under-hyped gem worth checking out that’s known for its vibrant, car-free city center.

Tambo: Combarro’s Secret Island

Remember earlier when I said Combarro doesn’t have Spain’s most vibrant beaches?

Well, let’s just say that was a bit of a play on words…

One of Spain’s best-kept secrets lies about 3 miles offshore from Combarro. There’s an easy-to-book ferry with round-trip fares under $20.

Dates are very limited for spring, but summer is when this island almost loses its ‘secret’ status with an influx of locals flocking to Adreira Beach.

This island was blurred on Google Maps. It was kept hush-hush as under military jurisdiction, but it’s now open to the public for the ultimate escape from what you might think is Spain’s unavoidable beach crowds.

While Tambo’s 2 worthwhile beaches here are quaint, the atmosphere tis nothing to the level of Barcelona and Spain’s world-renowned islands, such as Mallorca.

The island is no one-trick pony either as a get-in, get-out day trip after working on your tan.

History runs deep here. From its army stronghold, former days as a monk sanctuary and pirate attack hotspot, this is why we at Travel Off Path claim Combarro and Tambo are the most dynamic duo in Spain few seem to know about.

We’ve been singing its praises for years, and we’ll keep hammering it home until it sticks: Mexico is so much more than its Caribbean beaches, larger-than-life luxury resorts, and touristy pyramids.

The underrated Pacific state of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, has never been more popular than it is now.

Oaxaca’s Top 3 Fastest-Rising Tourism Spots

The numbers are officially in, and according to the DataTur monitoring program and the State Comprehensive Tourism Information System, Oaxaca hosted around 6.289.000 domestic and international visitors in 2025, its best year in tourism yet.

In all honesty, we can’t say we’re surprised:

Between Oaxaca’s historically rich colonial towns and UNESCO-listed sites, down to the pristine coastline and lush nature, it is one of Mexico’s most diverse states, but three spots in particular account for over 54% of tourist arrivals (and were responsible for 86.6% of the economic impact).

Everyone’s going to Oaxaca this year, and it’s these gems they’re hitting up:

Puerto Escondido

Tulum, before it got completely ruined, Puerto Escondido is an aptly-named hidden spot for Mexican locals—and trusted foreigners—whose sole aim is to kick it back, enjoy the sun, and not pay exorbitant amounts of money while they’re at it.

It’s home to beautiful, protected beaches, like Carrizalillo, set in a cove flanked by steep cliffs, and Zicatela, a surfing hotspot backed by youth hostels and beach bars, and though it does have a buzzing nightlife, it’s nowhere near Yucatán’s level of crazy.

In the heart of town, the Principal Beach is the trendiest place to be: a long stretch of sand dotted with palm trees and thatch-roofed bars. Ordering a cheeky pre-lunch cocktail will cost you only $4 on average, while a meal in a casual waterfront restaurant ranges from $10 to $15.

Don’t miss Mercado Benito Juárez, the vibrant local market, or El Adoquín, a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare lined with street food stalls and local crafts.

As you can imagine, many names we all know and love didn’t make the cut.</p> <p>That said, this designated <em>pueblo magico</em> sure did — and it’s the perfect antidote to appease Mexico City’s anti-tourism protesters, as it’s <strong>just 90 minutes away</strong>, so you get in, get out, and be on your merry way.</p> <p>Timeless, majestic, authentic, and, of course, delicious (hey, it’s Mexico after all), the practically unknown city of <strong>Tepoztlan</strong> will truly wow you as one of the country’s most undiscovered destinations.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Discover Real <strong>Mexico In This ‘Magical’ City</strong></h3> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Tepoztlan-colorful-sign.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Look, we get it — Cancun and Cabo are drop-dead gorgeous and always a good time.</p> <p>But does this dynamic duo accurately reflect Mexico to its core?</p> <p>The hospitable people certainly do who pour your wine and dish out sizzling tacos at the drop of a hat, but venturing out into downtown and back to the resort isn’t what the rest of Mexico is all about.</p> <p>In fact, many say the same thing about Mexico City now, with hordes of digital nomads scoring cheap rent to the point of angering locals who feel they’ve lost their beloved hometown’s soul.</p> <p>Tepoztlan is one of Mexico’s many <em>pueblo magicos</em>. If you haven’t brushed up on Duolingo lately, that simply translates to “magical town”.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Historic-stone-promenade-in-Tepoztlan-MX.jpg"></a></figure> <p>While you likely won’t see David Blaine doing card tricks here, you will find ancient mountaintop ruins (<strong>El Tepozteco</strong>), centuries-old convents, bustling artisan markets, and a valley backdrop so dramatic it almost feels staged, hence the <em>magic</em> of venturing into the unknown.</p> <p>This vibrant town of roughly 14,000 residents is a joy to explore, with its colorful rows of homes, storied cathedrals oozing character, and even sample generational recipes at local no-frills street stalls and hole-in-the-wall eateries.</p> <p>Tepoztlan truly feels like it’s still present in a bygone era, especially with aforementioned El Tepozteco still remarkably intact 800 years later.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tepoztlan Is Very Affordable</strong></h3> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.traveloffpath.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Traditional-Tepoztlan-cuisine.jpg"></a></figure> <p>Put the queso dip away and prepare your tastebuds for authentic Mexican grub at jaw-dropping prices you just won’t find back home.</p> <p>You can genuinely eat well here for an entire weekend for the cost of one Cancun resort dinner or night out in Mexico City’s posh Polanco district (trust me — I just got back from there).</p> <p>Keep an eye out for <em>Itacates</em> on restaurant menus and vendor signboards if you want to activate your inner Anthony Bourdain.</p> <p>But traveling isn’t just about filling your gut with hard-to-pronounce cuisine.
