Southern Thailand’s Largest City

You’d never guess it, but Hat Yai is Southern Thailand’s largest urban sprawl, chock-full of goodies.

If the name rings a bell, it’s more likely you heard mainstream news cover Mother Nature’s wrath in fall of 2025, when horrendous floods wiped out swaths of the city, ultimately taking it off the map for tourism with the exception of surrounding towns.

Songkhla Province, where Hat Yai is located, is well worth exploring beyond the cityscape — and don’t worry, we’ll get there.

But the city itself is what’s been promoted by both tourism and government officials, not just to ease the crowds of Thailand’s household names, but to boost the economy for one of the nation’s biggest hidden gems, in more ways than one.

What makes the city of Hat Yai special is how it feels refreshingly local, especially for such a globally popular country.

A far cry from Bangkok, it’s a southern hub known for markets, street food, shopping, temples, and even easy access to Malaysia, so you can double-dip your trip.

Even if you do cross over, you won’t break the bank on either side, as both Malaysia and Thailand are remarkably affordable across the board.

Though, one could argue nothing beats Vietnam’s prices.

Beyond The City: Springboard To Songkhla’s Secret Shores

Hat Yai may not scream “Thailand beach getaway” at first glance, but you’re in for a surprise.

The same way I was shocked how beautiful the outskirts of Bangkok are with gorgeous countryside right outside the city, the same can be said for the shoreline beyond Hat Yai.

The Songkhla Province quietly hides a postcard coastline most travelers skip altogether in favor of the names we’ve all grown accustomed too with even Pattaya rebranding — or at least giving it the ol’ “college try”.

Rather than rows of flashy resorts and jam-packed beach clubs, this side of Thailand boasts long sandy shores, freshly caught seafood by the water, numerous undiscovered beach towns, and unparalleled bliss away from the city grind.

That said, there are some resorts — it’s just not anywhere near Phuket’s level. Definitely check out Ao Thai Resort.

I’m not even going to list how cheap it is because you won’t believe me — you’ll have to check here yourself.

How Safe Is Thailand To Visit?

Thailand is currently designated “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution“, which is the second lowest designation that’s on par with many of your favorite destinations, such as Mexico.

But how are travelers really feeling visiting this Southeast Asia phenom?

As for Hat Yai specifically, you won’t find anything jarring to deter you from booking your trip, but you’ll definitely want to check the weather report given how Hat Yai got in this position in the first place…

Spain is one of Europe’s most diverse destinations, but if there’s one reason to hone in on Almuñécar as your next international escape, it’s due to its unique tropical vibes — at least for Spain.

I mean, it is hugging Costa Tropical after all, right?

1) Playa de Cantarrijan:

Hey, we’re not here to judge, but travelers ranked this nudist haven as Almuñécar’s top beach. To some, it’s a sight for sore eyes, but most would agree the real eye-catcher is crystal-clear water that’s perfect for snorkeling in this beautiful cove.

2) Playa San Cristobal:

This one is the easiest all-around beach day pick, with clear water and ample restaurants and bars nearby in a more accessible urban setting.

3) Playa Cotobro:

Cotobro feels more like a local hideout, with a quaint shoreline, hillside views, and a calmer atmosphere than Almuñécar’s busy-body beaches.

Getting Here

Obviously, being a mid-size town of roughly 28,000 residents, there’s no airport.

However, Málaga is just an hour away — and Americans can fly here direct from Newark!

The other, less convenient option would be to fly into Granada, also about an hour away. Unfortunately, there are no nonstops from any U.S. Airports.

Of course, Spain is one of the most awe-inspiring countries to explore by train, but there’s no station in Almuñécar.

Puffin Season Kicks Off In May 🐧

If there’s one thing topping bucket lists around the world, it’s seeing puffins up close and personal in their natural habitat.

But the misnomer seems to be that most Americans think they have to fly ‘across the pond’ to do just that.

That’s simply not the case. There are actually multiple destinations across North America where puffins flock ashore each year — coastal Maine being one of the top spots for seasonal excursions.

In fact, one of the biggest draws of visiting Monhegan Island this time of year is its access to nearby Eastern Egg Rock, where it’s said up to 150 nesting pairs of puffins can be spotted each season.

Maine’s hidden island, even locals may not know, may not have been on your 2026 Bingo card, but it’s not too late to pencil it in.

Pack Your Camera For Monhegan’s ‘Interstellar’ Landscapes

The good news is this island feels so untouched beyond the welcome of the shared namesake town of Monhegan that you’ll feel like you have it all to yourself (and the estimated 65 people that live here).

The bad news is recreational drone use is heavily restricted, which may explain why TikTokers haven’t flooded this place making epic videos surely to invade your algorithm.

Whether you’re old school with a Polaroid or mastered iPhone camera wizardry, Monhegan Island’s dramatic cliffs and moody seascapes will leave you doing a double take as if you’re on Interstellar’s film set.

One unmissable place to scope out is The Headlands, located on the rear side of the island, boasting some of the highest ocean cliffs of Maine and easily comparable to Iceland’s Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara (minus the black sand).

Getting Here & Where To Stay

As you might’ve imagined, being so small, Monhegan Island is only accessible by boat.

Unfortunately, you can’t simply fly into Portland and hop aboard a ferry. It’s a bit more of an adventure.

Getting here requires departing from Port Clyde or New Harbor aboard one of the aforementioned tour operators, also offering puffin tours.

Once you arrive, you’ll find similar quirky, colorful cottages like you see dotted around Iceland.

You Won’t Find Anywhere Stateside That Feels Safer

Earlier this year, we reported that Maine was ranked as America’s safest state, no matter if you’re vacationing in one of many charming coastal towns like Kennebunkport or the biggest city, Portland.

For example, most crime tends to happen in larger populations, but Portland is currently scoring as 85/100 on our real-time safety index — one of the highest scores for any U.S. destination.

Nearly 350,000 travelers opted for a different kind of Virginia vacation last year — one that didn’t involve hordes of crowds at Virginia Beach during sunny summer beach days.

For a small town, welcoming six figures threefold is nothing to dismiss. Especially since Cape Charles is estimated to be home to about 1,200 people.

Here’s one: Per the town’s official tourism site, Cape Charles stands out for having one of the East Coast’s largest clusters of ‘turn-of-the-century buildings’.

But finding your Zen doesn’t require an investment in crystals or taking out a loan to reserve a “limited time” special for that very last spot on said retreat.

You can just keep it simple and go to The Gulf.

No, not that Gulf where every country seems to be under tight security alerts.

Being the South’s trendiest beach getaway, our expert team at Travel Off Path did some hefty digging to uncover 3 unknown beach towns waiting to be discovered, while the rest of the state is expected to be jam-packed with tourists, especially with fun events on the docket, such as the Clash Coastal Mississippi triathlon, Gulf Coast Grand Prix, and Truckin’ the South.

Pass Christian: Mississippi’s New Resort Destination

When we say the Mississippi Coast will be “jam-packed”, we largely mean Biloxi.

That said, with Amtrak’s surging Mardi Gras route, there’s a handful of Mississippi stopping points that have become more popular as well, such as Bay St. Louis and Pascagoula, Jimmy Buffett’s hometown.

But certainly not Pass Christian, though it has made headlines for its latest attraction.

The Pass Bungalows put Pass Christian on southern travelers’ radar as a brand new ‘coastal retreat’, though not the kind we just touched on…

There are no gimmicks, just scenic harbor views, steps from white sand, and a pool and tiki bar to die for when you’re not cozied up in your spacious room of this all-suite resort.

Before the bungalows had their fabulous grand opening, Pass Christian was largely a pass-through town along the waterfront Highway 90 on the way to Biloxi.

Not anymore. It’s the destination, yet it still flies under the radar.

Whatever you do, book a stay at Pass Bungalows, spend a day at Henderson Park, and make time to feast at Kimball Seafood (near-perfect Google rating!).

Long Beach: Mississippi’s Most Laid-Back Beach Town

You may know the Long Beach Dr. Dre rapped about, but even some Mississippi locals aren’t aware of this hidden gem next door to Gulfport.

As Amtrak has planted more small towns on the map, Long Beach is now the pass-through town Pass Christian used to be.

And they have no problem being a sleepy coastal town. While locals may claim “there’s not much to do here”, that’s part of the appeal, being so close to Gulfport, Biloxi, and other up-and-comers.

But if you’re craving a quiet beach day, whether to work on your tan in peace or cast a reel and let your stress melt away, Long Beach is just the place.

Plus, it’s a little quirky (aren’t we all?).

Its claims to fame have been one of America’s Friendliest cities and the world’s Radish Capital, even holding an annual Radish Festival (April 18, 2026).

I guess there’s something for everyone…

Away from its gleaming white shoreline, you’ll find a quaint townscape brimming with delightful shops and down-home seafood eats without the touristy vibes.

It may not be home to swank new bungalows, but it’s home to The Inn Of Long Beach, a serene waterfront hotel with rave reviews and affordable rates throughout spring.

Waveland: Family-Fun Waterparks & Crowd-Free Beaches

Perhaps Mississippi’s least-known beach is Waveland, a town that lives up to its name in more ways than one.

First, this town is all but guaranteed not to have a crowd in sight along its blissful coastline.

And that leads to our second point — because they’re all likely having a blast at Buccaneer Bay Waterpark, offering a wave pool and thrilling slides to cool off on a fun day under the sun.

The waterpark is currently closed but reopens late spring — May 23rd to be exact.

Located within Buccaneer State Park, there’s arguably no place better in the state to catch a sunset or find hidden coves all to yourself.

But the best beach spot in town is undoubtedly Waveland Avenue Beach. Just be aware many reviews mention shark sightings, so this is a place best enjoyed at a distance since the trade-off to most of Mississippi’s white-sand coast tends to be cloudier waters — with the exception of Ship Island.

We’ve done it! We at Travel Off Path have discovered a real-life unicorn.

Southwest may have finally got it right, cutting down cattle-herding at the boarding gate, but there are few flight options that benefit you when last-minute plans change.

You can be packed up, ready for tomorrow’s flight, when suddenly your seafood doesn’t settle well and you don’t have to white-knuckle your flight, hoping Pepto works a miracle.

Most airlines charge an arm and a leg (who came up with saying?) for same-day changes, or any changes at all for that matter, in addition to tacking on the difference in airfare — which we all know tends to astronomically spike the closer you are to your travel date.

It is true Frontier and Spirit have given their best shot to become more customer friendly, though there’s one virtually unknown airline that’s been doing it right along…

Americans can fly nonstop to a pair of Bahamian paradises and not have to worry about extra costs whether you wake up with a stomach ache or simply decide to push back your vacation.

Western Air: Fly To Freeport Or Nassau On Rare Customer-First Airline

As far as Caribbean islands go, we all know The Bahamas is arguably the most family-friendly with equal parts thrilling and relaxing resorts and excursions for all ages.

Of course, it’s typically considered one of the safest Caribbean getaways too (minus some out-of-the-blue security alerts over the last year or so).

Though our audience currently claims via our new Traveler Safety Index that The Bahamas is a 75/100, falling behind other popular beach escapes like Punta Cana, Cabo, and Cancun as of this writing.

That said, The Bahamas is just as popular as it’s ever been, but Western Air is a unique opportunity too many Americans are passing over, and likely overpaying when opting for another more notable airline.

Western Air offers daily flights from one major U.S. airport to two of The Bahamas’ most prized destinations:

What Exactly Does Western Air Offer Passengers?

Besides 2 easy ocean-hop routes, this Freeport-based, family-operated carrier is one of few airlines taking you to amazing vacation spots while also putting the customer first.

Freeport Vs. Nassau: Which Caribbean Paradise Suits You Best?

Nassau portrays the image you’ve likely seen of The Bahamas. You know — Atlantis, a colorful Colonial cityscape, and crowded beaches since most tourists flock here over any other Bahamian island.

Nassau may be the most accessible entry point, but it’s often the priciest, too, if you’re dead set on booking a beachside resort.

Freeport, on the other hand, is what some may call the ‘real Bahamas’, lacking cookie-cutter experiences with more seemingly untouched nature and fewer footprints in the sand.

Think hole-in-the-wall rum shacks, sleepy fishing villages, and wild mangrove-lined coastline compared to the cozy comforts of Nassau, which is more inviting for family vacations.

Freeport also tends to be much more affordable. For example, if you were to book a beachfront hotel in April, you’re looking in the $200 per night range, while Nassau’s rates are often doubled and even have commas on the higher end in highly sought-after Paradise Island.

Where Nassau and Freeport don’t separate from each other is safety. According to the State Department’s last advisory in May 2025, both Nassau and Freeport were both singled out, triggering a ‘Level 2: Exercised Increased Caution’ designation:

“Most crime occurs in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. Stay alert in the “Over the Hill” area in Nassau, south of Shirley Street, where gangs have killed residents.”

Gotland, Sweden

A Swedish island in the Baltic Sea that exists in a different microcosm altogether than the buzzing, cosmopolitan Stockholm, Gotland is known for its rugged nature, dramatic coastline interpersed with unruffled beaches, and understated medieval heritage:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Visby is the Gotlander capital and cultural heart, best known for its imposing defensive walls—some of the best-preserved ones in Northern Europe, at that—charming cobbled streets, and 12th-century cathedral.

Over in Lummelunda, you’ll find Sweden’s longest limestone cave, with otherworldly stalactite-framed chambers and underground streams, and if it’s those deserted sandy beaches you’re after, Tofta is a solid pick.

Just bear in mind, this ain’t the Mediterranean: yes, Sweden might throw you the occasional actually-hot summer day, but as for the water? This is still the Baltic Sea. Jump right in without testing the waters first, and it’ll slap your soul right out of your body.

Osijek, Croatia

The crown jewel of Slavonia, a culturally distinct region of Croatia that feels like a whole world apart from the heavily Italianate, Mediterranean Dalmatia, Osijek is one of the country’s most under-the-radar, yetbeautiful cities.

It looks like most Dubrovnik-spellbound tourists aren’t keen on veering off the main established tourist route and exploring eastern Croatia, after all. No stone-built, Dalmatian houses, winding cobbled streets, or long coastal promenades: Osijek has a different kind of beauty.

Primarily Central European in character, it is home to a stunning Neo-Gothic cathedral, built in red brick with a prominent central tower, pedestrian-friendly lanes flanked by ornate Austro-Hungarian buildings, and a monumental Baroque citadel.

Locally known as Tvrđa, it’s practically a town within a town, with cobble-paved streets, historic buildings, a museum, and cozy cafés serving hot, just-baked spinach-and-cheese burek, and the dark, rich, espresso-style kava. A Croatian immaterial heritage.

Udine, Italy

A short 2-hour train ride from Venice, Udine revolves around a landmark Piazza della Libertà—Italy’s most beautiful in my book—featuring arcaded buildings, an ornamented column topped with the Venetian winged lion, and a quietly iconic Loggia del Lionello:

You won’t find it on most Italian travel brochures, yet it’s a 15th-century Gothic Town Hall distinguished by its striking pink-and-white stone front and a crenellated roof that’s still largely intact. One of the most memorable you’ll see in Italy.

Other must-sees include Udine Castle, a hilltop fortress boasting panoramic city views, and the unassuming Cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore: it’s not exactly the most impressive seen from the outside, with its bare façade, but it houses masterful frescoes.

The Historic Center itself is an absolute joy to wander, with its many trattorie, dishing out pumpkin-filled tortelli and other Friulian delicacies, piazzette bordered by slender, pastel-colored buildings, and an unrivaled lived-in feel. You know, English isn’t exactly widely spoken or heard up here.

Saaremaa, Estonia

Tallinn, the postcard-ready capital of Estonia, is already pretty offbeat and uncrowded enough for most, but if you’re craving a real feel of the remote, you should definitely take the first ferry out to Saaremaa, the country’s largest island:

With beaches that run for endless miles without a single human in sight, and verdant fields sprinkled with castles and tight-knit communities, it’s been a prime R&R weekend getaway since the USSR years. Yep, as in the former Soviet Union, of which Estonia was a part.

This is one of those niche destinations Estonians—and formerly Russians—used to come to unwind and recharge. The capital, Kuressaare, is dominated by a perfectly preserved medieval Episcopal Castle and its sparsely populated, windmill-dotted townscape.

Add the scattered patches of green and a scenic waterfront to top it off, and you’ll get why Estonians flock in here for that much-needed sense of tranquility. Kuressaare is gorgeous, alright, but you haven’t truly been to Saaremaa until you’ve headed out into nature:

Kaali Meteorite Crater is a meteorite impact site that formed a small lake, nestled in a lush forest, and Saaremaa’s most-prized natural attraction.

I’d say that’s the island’s biggest “wow” moment—if it weren’t for Panga Cliff, of course—I’ve always had a soft spot for limestone cliffs that command epic coastal views at sunset.

I’m not necessarily an enthusiast for swimming in that ice-cold Baltic Sea myself, however, if we’re talking picnic on a long sandy beach, and dipping toes in shallow waters, Järve Beach is the closest to a Southern European beach getaway you’ll get this far Northeast.

1) Isla Contoy: Cancun’s Pristine Paradise Few Know About

You know Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, but chances are you’ve been missing out on the white-sand oasis of Isla Contoy.

Heck, I just got back from Cancun a few days ago, and not once did I see any ads or hear of any fellow vacationers’ plans to visit.

There are a couple of reasons for that. One, the islands has a strict 200-person daily limit. Second, it’s not nearly as marketed as other popular excursions such as Tulum and Akumal.

Isla Contoy is Cancun’s last frontier. With millions visiting each year, that means only 73,000 at most can visit in a calendar year.

So, is it possible to make a reservation?

Yes, with some advanced planning. A last-minute decision likely won’t be in the cards for you.

2) Isla Marias: A Cluster Of Untouched Paradises

Well, we weren’t expecting “Puerto Vallarta” to be a trigger term this week, but there’s no escaping it…

However, we’re happy to report after an unexpected influx of violence taking place in one of Mexico’s most popular resort towns, the city is back on the up and up.

The wild stretch of coastline wrapping Puerto Vallarta is known as Riviera Nayarit with trendy surfer towns like Sayulita, but what’s often missed is Islas Marias, a a remote archipelago turned UNESCO-protected eco-destination just off the coast.

Believe it or not, up until 2019, it was actually a federal prison rivaling Alcatraz in terms of surrounding gorgeous scenery.

One reason it’s off-radar is because it’s still under operation by the Mexican Navy, so wandering around on your own is limited — plus the fact the ferry schedule is sporadic at best with service just once a week.

You’ll arrive on Islas Marias on Friday from either San Blas or Mazatlán with the option to return on Sundays, which means your only option is a stay for two nights, three days for the ultimate thrill-seeker.

With beaches as postcard-worthy as Chapingo Beach, there are far worse places to spend a few days lounging around.

3) Mexcaltitan: The “Venice Of Mexico”

Even more of textbook “hidden gem” in Nayarit is Mexcaltitan, an urban island that’s been commonly dubbed the “Venice of Mexico”.

This is not a beach destination per se — it’s a map-dot circular island that’s cultural, festive, unique, and practically unknown to the masses.

Mexcaltitan floods every rainy season, which may not seem like a draw to visit, but it’s actually a sight to behold and well-planned for with raised walkways, elevated homes, and boats replacing foot traffic during heavy rains.

It’s true, you can tour the island by canoe just like the real Venice, but we recommend tacos and fresh seafood here over pizza and pasta.

While you can visit from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico’s newest airport in Tepic is even closer to reach one of Mexico’s most unparalleled destinations that’s worthy of topping your travel bucket list.

When you think of Peru, chances are Lima comes to mind, with its beautiful coastline, vibrant food markets, and buzzing city life. Or maybe the colonial charm of Cusco, which brings that Old World allure to the mix.

And, of course, there’s Machu Picchu, the world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the Andean Highlands.

That used to be Peru ticked off for most, or at least Peru for beginners.

Lately, an interesting trend has been emerging: more and more visitors are being drawn to a lesser-known city in the south of the country that’s not exactly part of the popular, Andean-centered Peru 10-day package.

In fact, according to data shared by Gercetur, the Peruvian Gerencia Regional de Comercio Exterior y Turismo (Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism), tourism there has already surpassed pre-pandemic levels:

Arequipa Is Peru’s Shining Star

Welcome to Arequipa, Peru’s trendiest destination right now:

Historically considered Peru’s third-best tourist destination, Arequipa used to be the place you ‘fit’ into the itinerary if there were enough days left. After, you know, Cusco, Lima, and all your Sacred Valleys and Rainbow Mountains and stuff.

Recently, however, a growing number of tourists are veering off the beaten path—not that we’re trying to be self-referential—and spending time in Arequipa.

This isn’t just another name on a map, or somewhere you pass through on your way from Point A to B: it’s a sprawling regional capital home to over 1.19 million residents, with a unique mix of history, culture, and geography that makes it stand out from the rest.

For starters, it is nicknamed La Ciudad Blanca, or The White City: a majority of the buildings in the colonial Historic Center were built by the Spanish using local sillar, a volcanic stone extracted from the surrounding mountains.

Also UNESCO-protected, this same Centro is packed full of stunning Baroque churches, café-bordered plazas, and elegant colonial mansions dating back to the 16th century, perfectly preserved.

There’s plenty of historic structures to be found around town, but if we were to narrow it down to the top 3 most important, these would definitely be:

• Plaza de Armas: the central square, and the beating heart of Arequipa. It’s where you go to admire the ornate white-stone buildings, buy snacks from friendly local vendors, and people-watch
• Catedral Basílica: located right on Plaza de Armas itself. Originally dating back to the 1600s, it’s been rebuilt a number of times, mixing Renaissance and Baroque features
• Santa Catalina Monastery: essentially a miniature city inside Arequipa, it has narrow streets, vibrant-colored walls (in stark contrast with the largely-white townscape), and old cloisters

The coolest thing about Arequipa is that it sits in a valley surrounded by volcanoes, with El Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu to name a few.

These provide the most breathtaking backdrop to the city’s church towers and Spanish-style civic edifices, and, beyond being beautiful, these mountains are the main reason Arequipa is so fertile and productive.

After all, volcanic soil is the key ingredient behind its rich agriculture.

Peru’s Food Medina, Second Only To Lima

Ancient monuments, stunning natural vistas, and lush nature are perhaps 50% of the reason why tourists flock to Peru every year. The remaining 50% is food.

We don’t know that for sure, but we know.

If you came here for fresh farm-to-table fare, new, indescribable flavors, and culinary surprises around every corner, Arequipa is probably second only to Lima in terms of gastronomical prowess. If the capital is the country’s Food Mecca, Arequipa can be the Peruvian ‘Food Medina’.

A beef-and-herbs-stuffed spicy pepper, topped with a creamy béchamel-esque sauce, rocoto relleno is Arequipa’s pride and joy, and there’s nowhere better to try those than Sol de Mayo, a charming colonial-inspired eatery near Plaza de Armas.

Ocopa Arequipeña is a hearty local dish of boiled potatoes smothered in a thick sauce made with peanuts and huacatay (an Andean herb), topped with cheese, and if they’re feeling particularly generous, a boiled egg crowns the plate.

Chicha, run by renowned Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio, is said to serve the best ocopas in town, and given the chef behind it, expect nothing less than exceptional.

The Peruvian Grand Canyon

Last but certainly not least, Arequipa is the main base for trips to Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest, and perhaps the main natural wonder in southern Peru.

About 10,730 feet deep at its deepest point, it’s roughly twice as profound as the Grand Canyon, and this dramatic depth creates towering cliffs and natural terraces that attract both adventurous rock climbers and casual sightseers alike.

To the bird geeks out there, this is the home of the Andean condor, and at viewpoints like Cruz del Cóndor, you can actually see the majestic winged creature in flight, as they vertiginously glide down the ravine only to conquer the skies again.

Other than wildlife, the canyon is dotted with ancient agricultural terraces, built thousands of years ago by long-lost civilizations that preceded the Incans. Some are still in use today by local farmers, especially those from indigenous communities like the Collagua and Cabana peoples.

Let’s be real for a sec, unless you’re a geography buff or you’ve been on one of the ultra-luxurious Royal Caribbean cruises, chances are you’ve only vaguely heard of Belize.

Squeezed between the Caribbean Sea and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula—the same one that’s home to our beloved Cancun—it is a tiny nation-state roughly the size of New Hampshire, sparsely populated, and almost entirely covered by jungle.

People go to Belize for different reasons: if they’re there on business, the Belize City financial hub is probably where they’ll spend most of their time. For tourists keen on exploring ancient Mayan ruins, find them either in the Altun Ha or Caracol archaeological zones.

Now, if they’re craving that much-needed R&R and some quality time in the sun, chances are Ambergris Caye is where they’re headed:

One Of The Last Truly Unspoiled Caribbean Islands

With pristine white sands unfolding along crystal-clear seas, endless rows of palm trees, and undeveloped fishing villages that have not been completely decharacterized by gentrification, it is the kind of island you escape to when the fast-pacedness of the modern world starts getting to you.

According to BTB, out of Belize’s 551,698 total overnight visitors in 2025, Ambergris Caye accounted for nearly 28% of all guests. In their own words, San Pedro (the largest settlement on the island) is ‘where everyone who visits Belize wants to go’.

Ambergris Caye is special because it truly packs a lot into one surprisingly small island, stretching 25 miles and a little over 1 mile wide:

• It’s the largest island in Belize, and San Pedro is a main tourism destination
• It lies next to Belize’s Barrier Reef, the 2nd largest in the world
• Laid-back Caribbean vibes: think golf carts instead of cars, barefoot luxury, and zero stress
• Secret beaches that remain virtually uncrowded

This Is What You Visit Ambergris Caye For

Naturally, there’s no visiting Ambergris Caye without hitting up San Pedro, the largest coastal town. It’s known for its vibrant streets, with colorful buildings splashed in street art, beachfront vendors selling fresh fruit and local snacks, and… hem, some golf-chart chaos.

If you’ve been to Isla Mujeres in Mexico, you know the drill.

Ambergis Caye isn’t exactly known for its plethora of ancient ruins, unlike mainland Belize, but it does have a charming San Pedro Roman Catholic Church—Caribbean-simple, but historic—and traditional bars on piers, like Papala Bar & Grill, where you can literally have drinks over the water

However, the island’s main appeal is the stunning nature, particularly around the Hol Chan Marine Reserve: there are numerous diving spots around the park, but for a better chance of catching sight of those sea turtles, eagle rays, and colorful fish, head straight for Coral Reef Zone A.

Over in the Shark Ray Alley, the most adventurous among us can swim with nurse sharks and stingrays in shallow, crystalline water. It’s one of the most touristy spots on the island, but if you’re extremely passionate about marine life, it’s a must-see.

Stunning Beaches Galore

Gorgeous as Hol Chan may be, it doesn’t exactly have beaches in the traditional sense of the word. For the Belize-typical white sands and palm trees, you’ll want to take the winding coastal road that leads to Secret Beach.

Not exactly secret, with all the floating bars nearby, but it still feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the Main Beach in Cancun, or any of your average Mexican Caribbean resort strip. Again, Belize is visited by roughly half-a-million people every year.

For even quieter shores, North Ambergris Caye, near the aptly-named Tranquility Bay, has a string of natural, postcard-ready beaches, and fewer swimmers, whereas Bacalar Chico, in the north, can only be described as remote and wild.

Zero crowds, raw nature, and turquoise seas. It’s also located right beside the namesake Bacalar Chico National Park, famous for its mangroves, reefs, and big-toothed crocs. Don’t worry, though: the beaches are safe for swimming.

How Much Does Ambergris Caye Cost To Visit?

Ambergris Caye is not exactly the cheapest spot to visit in Belize, particularly compared to Caye Caulker, and Placencia Peninsula, which is not an island, proper, but an island-like peninsula on the mainland.

That said, you can travel on a budget, and you eat local and stay basic:

Why Visit Belize This Season

On top of that, Ambergris Caye is a low-risk destination for international tourists. Crime on the island is limited, and most visitors report feeling safe during their vacation.

It’s a bit out of the way, given the fact it doesn’t host nonstop flights, and if you’re heading there, you’ll likely have to touch down first in Belize City (BZE), then take a short domestic ‘hopper’ flight to Ambergris Caye.

Additionally, English is widely spoken on the island (Belize is an English-speaking country, after all), tourist zones are well-equipped with restaurants, bars, and modern amenities, and dollars are accepted in most venues, making Ambergris Caye a highly-convenient Caribbean escape.
