How were they ranked, you ask? Let’s just say factors such as museum density, diversity of cultural venues, and, quote on quote, a ‘richness of their year-round festival calendar’ were all taken into consideration.

Then, cultural experts evaluated each individual destination’s cultural heritage, ‘contemporary creativity’, and most importantly, the visitor experience and their international impact. It doesn’t end there.

For the final push, 22,093 travelers from over 131 countries were invited to rate them based on their travel preferences for 2026.

You get the gist: this is a rock-tight, no-BS, data-driven study. So now that the methodology’s laid out, what were EBD’s actual results? Well… you might be familiar with some of the names featured, but let’s just say number one might turn a few heads.

Down on the Croatian coast, you know how it goes: Šibenik is your usual, timeless Roman-era port cut through with cobbled alleys, peppered with laid-back, Italian-style trattorie dishing out fresh seafood on the daily, terracotta rooftops, and a healthy number of ancient churches.

Naturally, there’s plenty of jaw-dropping beauty to be soaked up here, and trust us when we say, you risk suffering from neck pain from looking up all the time.

Getting lost in Florence’s maze-like center is the best way to stumble on all that the city has to offer, but if you’re ever in need of a Northern Star, keep your eyes peeled for the impossible-to-miss Brunelleschi-designed red dome.

The main feature of Florence Cathedral is that it rises 114.5 meters above the maze of skinny, ocher-colored townhouses and winding alleys that is Florence, and alongside a free-standing bell tower and a marble-clad baptistery, it’s the city’s undisputed magnum opus.

EBD’s top cultural destination for 2026 is none other than Nicosia, the offbeat beating heart of Cyprus, an Eastern Mediterranean island at the crossroads of the Eastern and Western worlds, and the world’s last divided capital city.

Cyprus is one of the trendiest European destinations right now, so you should definitely read further if the idea of Nicosia ranking higher than Florence or Vienna sounds a tad too outlandish for you.

No, it doesn’t have the former’s jaw-dropping architectural masterpieces, nor the latter’s soaring Gothic spires, but there’s something about its Venetian fortifications, sun-drenched, banner-lined streets, and unusual mash-up of Greek and Turkish flavors that makes it feel like the real deal.

If you’re visiting Nicosia in 2026, brushing up on the destination ahead of time and getting your head around Cyprus’s tricky geopolitical setup is key.
