One European country never got the memo that nothing in life is free.

Despite being one of Europe’s richest countries in terms of bank account commas, consider it a good deed or simply a flex, they’re the only EU nation to offer free transportation nationwide for tourists.

Unlike in Malta, where locals get free transit and tourists still have to pay fees, that’s not the case here.

I know so because I’ve done it myself and had a great time without paying a dime.

You hop on, hop off, and enjoy the ride — no questions asked.

Before diving deeper, I can’t recommend enough to download this app: Mobiliteit.lu.

It’s a lifesaver to help you navigate tiny, yet timeless, Luxembourg, one of Europe’s most underrated countries — but word is leaking out about how awesome it is to explore, as they welcomed a record number of train passengers in 2025.

No Stone Unturned: Explore Luxembourg End To End For Free

Luxembourg is a map-dot nation sandwiched between Germany, France, and Belgium, but it’s often overlooked due to its upscale reputation, where grandiose architecture gleams at every turn and the city seems to spill from clifftops down into storybook valleys.

So, what makes Luxembourg such a draw if prices drive people away before they even get a chance to visit?

Let’s tap the brakes first.

As someone who visited fairly recently, I can tell you I was surprised by how affordable Luxembourg was.

The only head-turning price points were hotels. Everything else felt very standard: a few bucks for coffee or a local beer, and German-style bar grub like sausages not topping $6.

Unless you’re dead-set on being bougie and shopping at all the Italian fashionista stores, you can undoubtedly squeeze in a budget-friendly trip here.

And think about it — if transit is free, that helps your bottom line…

Say you spend $200 on a hotel (I highly recommend DoubleTree by Hilton Luxembourg), unlike other expensive cities, where buying a transit pass feels like someone hacked your PIN code before you even leave the airport, your Luxembourg hotel suddenly feels less painful because you can hop around all day without spending a penny.

Think of Luxembourg as your own self-guided sightseeing tour.

That’s how my girlfriend and I tackled it, and we fell in love with all the castles and timeless villages, and even discovered there’s a hidden wine country region accessible by train that rarely ever makes the average traveler’s radar.

Is Luxembourg Boring?

Hey, we’re all professionals here, but that doesn’t mean we have to agree on everything.

As an American, I loved Luxembourg as it didn’t feel overly touristy, it has a wow factor for both its aesthetics and reverse sticker shock since I expected it to be more expensive, and it felt incredibly safe to wander at all hours, even the rare graffiti’d alley.

Our other Senior Writer, Vini, doesn’t agree, but he’s European and has been to almost every European country.

He says it’s one of the most boring cities in Europe.

So, here’s a summary of our trip, so you can decide for yourself:

• Kickstarted each morning with a scenic forest hike outside the DoubleTree Hotel
• Perused the local farmers market and discovered Luxembourg’s food scene is wildly underrated
• Sipped velvety cappuccinos among stately old buildings in a historic plaza
• Got lost countless times gawking at Old World streets and bridges
• Made our own pub-crawling tour once we realized beer wasn’t going to dent our wallet
• Hung out at Scott’s Pub for hours overlooking the flowing Alzette River (one of my all-time favorite European bars)
• Took the train around the city, then out to the Moselle region for a day of riverside wine tastings

We loved it — and that was just a couple of days spent here. We still talk about how much a delightful surprise Luxembourg was and only wish there were direct flights from the States.

Luxembourg Is One Of Europe’s Safest Countries

Don’t just take it from me.

One of the most impressive aspects of Luxembourg City, especially, was that they don’t shy away from it being a drinkin’ town.

As such, even after the public trains shut dow for the night, you can still hop aboard the after-hours City Night Bus on weekends to ensure you get where you need to go safely, as well as keeping drunk drivers off the roadways.

Additionally, the State Department backs up the claim too as Luxembourg’s current advisory is designated with the lowest classification, Level 1: Exercise Normal Precaution.

Remember when you used to board flights, halfway through checking your mailbox in a rush, or ensuring you’ve closed down all your pending WhatsApp chats, however urgent replying to them may be, before an imminent takeoff?

Once that orange plane logo slid on the top right corner of your screen, you knew it was bye-bye world, and hello 2-4 hours (or more) of an unbearable wait as your life was literally put on hold.

Either that, or one of those exorbitantly-priced internet packages that are hardly even functional.

Yeah, we don’t miss those moments either, especially as digital nomads and online business owners who cannot afford to go AWOL for the best part of an afternoon on a commercial day.

The good thing is, in 2025, it seems like the dreadful era of staying disconnected for hours on end during flights is quickly drawing to an end.

3 of the major airlines operating in the United States already offer complimentary Wi-Fi, either to all guests, or under certain conditions, and in 2026, yet another big name will be joining them.

Delta Air Lines

As one of the leading airlines in America, it’s no wonder Delta would join in on the Viasat roll-out race across their network: they may not have been the first ones to do so, but theirs is a much-welcome addition to the group of carriers welcoming passengers to free Wi-Fi.

As of right now, over 90% of all domestic mainline aircraft are equipped with Viasat Wi-Fi (some with Intelsat and Gogo).

The mainline distinction is essential, as although they operate as connection airlines for the Delta group, Endeavor Air, SkyWest, and Republic Airways do not make the list.

That’s a bit of a bummer for travelers who frequently use secondary hubs served by these smaller brands, but on the bright side, Delta is in the process of a big international launch, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Soon enough, you’ll be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi flying with Delta all over the world, with just one caveat, if we can even call it that:

You must join SkyMiles, either before boarding or onboard, and you only get 1 device per login, but hey, it is free! On top of that, you get to participate in their frequent flyer program—check out how you can convert that impressive mileage of yours into free flight tickets here.

As for speed and performance, Delta’s Wi-Fi is fast enough for streaming and browsing. If you’re not keen on signing up for SkyMiles, you still get free iMessage, WhatsApp, and Messenger access.

On the downside, it only allows 1 device per SkyMiles.

United Airlines

Next, we have United Airlines. Although it does not yet offer free Wi-Fi, it anticipates doing so by mid-2025.

Unlike Delta, however, they’re starting with regional jets, which should all be equipped with Starlink by the end of the year. We guess if you live somewhere like Boise, Spokane, Charlottesville in Virginia, or Albany, whose airports are typically served by regional jets, you can start getting excited.

As for the mainline fleet, the one you would use flying to your favorite sunny beach getaway in the Caribbean, or that fairytale European country, full coverage is only coming between 2026 and 2027.

The positives are: this is SpaceX-provided internet, so we can count on higher speeds and low-latency, and much like Delta, joining United’s MileagePlus loyalty program for free will be a precondition for accessing the service.

Quality Wi-Fi, and we get to collect miles? We’re not exactly complaining.

Once the launch takes place, United will become the first airline to adopt Starlink.

JetBlue

If you haven’t been to an airport in a while, you might be surprised to learn that JetBlue is the only airline currently offering free Wi-Fi coverage across 100% of its fleet.

In the United States, that is.

Viasat-powered internet is available on all domestic and international routes operated from U.S. soil. Unlike full-service airlines, which ask for a little something in return, however minimal, JetBlue requires no membership or even logging in.

Now, there have been varying reports on its efficacy and quality, but in theory, it is supposed to support web browsing, email, messaging, and even video streaming.

Just don’t be surprised if the latest Joe Rogan episode you’re listening to starts lagging a little over a Transatlantic flight.

To be on the safer side, download enough content in case.

That being said, among other perks, you can connect on multiple devices, and there is free Amazon Prime Video streaming onboard.

American Airlines Coming In 2026

Now for the big one.

American Airlines has free, ad-sponsored Wi-Fi exclusively for a select number of Viasat-equipped narrowbody fleets.

Usually, you get 20-30 minutes of internet by watching an ad, but starting in 2026, they will improve their offer and expand to up to 90% of the fleet.

Full-time free Wi-Fi will be available for AAdvantage members, who can sign up for it for free. Depending on the aircraft, it will be provided by Viasat or Intelsat.

Similar to its service on other carriers, Viasat will support stable, fast connections for video streaming, texting, and browsing while restricting it to one device per member.

Ever see those “free beer tomorrow” signs at your local watering hole? Well, that classic marketing trick to lure in customers just got outdone.

There’s a tiny Caribbean island serving complimentary brewskies (for real) and welcoming the public for the first time after initially requiring an invitation.

Let’s be real. At surface level, that sounds a little, shall we say…culty?

Don’t worry, though. You won’t end up on a Netflix documentary somewhere down the line questioning your life choices.

This place is the real deal and some of the first with the privilege to visit raved about it, describing the experience as ‘what dreams are made of’.

Corona Island, yes, that Corona, is a new retreat set offshore from Colombia and enticing travelers with free beer and waterfront bungalows to skip Punta Cana, The Bahamas, and even Colombia’s own Cartagena as their next Caribbean beach escape.

Corona Island: An Eco-Friendly Retreat With Posh Perks

No matter your beliefs on climate change and all the political talking points we’re surely all tired of hearing regurgitated on our screens, Corona Island’s focus is first and foremost sustainability — something we can all appreciate.

While beer might be a guilty pleasure, the guilt of less sustainable travel is absent here and the only world’s first and only island certified by Oceanic Global (a plastic-free designation).

Beer in plastic bottles would be a little weird anyway, right?

Powered by solar panels, the island still manages to house a restaurant, the Sunclub sunset deck, and 10 bungalows all made of local sustainable materials without sacrificing quality.

Reaching Corona Island

Paradise is a short ride away from one of Colombia’s most sought-after beach cities, Cartagena. But hey, isolated islands have a completely different appeal than the hustle and bustle of major cities.

Cartagena is the only gateway to reach Corona Island, so it’s a good thing this city is so well connected.

Corona Island’s Beachfront Bungalows

News is spreading fast about Corona Island’s opening, so you’ll want to book online ASAP to snag one of a limited number of bungalows.

For example, there are only 3 days in May still available as of this posting (May 26th – 28th), which costs about $609.

Oddly enough, the ‘King Bed’ bungalow is the same price as the ‘Twin Bed’ bungalow. Word to the wise.

With less than a dozen bungalows to choose from, there’s no time to let doubt creep in — just book this once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Each bungalow offers private terrace overlooking the Caribbean, a jacuzzi, and even an outdoor shower to cleanse yourself of sandy crevices before a nice dinner at the on-site restaurant, offering a meticulously crafted menu of local flavors and fresh seafood catches.

While not included in a description, it appears each bungalow is equipped with mosquito nets too — a necessity here.

But that’s not the only life form you’ll witness here as there are wild macaws, titi monkeys (hey, I didn’t name them!), and most notably, a sea turtle nesting ground.

Once you walk outside your bungalow, it feels like you’re in another world. This biodiverse island offers an array of wildlife, exotic beaches seem like the edge of Earth, and limitless skies perfect for stargazing after taking in epic sunsets.

Oh boy! It appears at least one budget airline smells blood in the water as Southwest just put the kibosh on their long-standing policy of “bags fly free”.

One might think when that shocking domino fell, it would kickstart a trickle-down fee-economics effect, but so far, so good for travelers’ wallets.

Time will tell if Southwest loyalists will stick around, but one competitor has decided to fill the gap by putting their well-documented strict (and controversial) baggage policies behind them, allowing travelers to check bags for free…at least for the summer.

Frontier Airlines, who were recently under public scrutiny for admitting to Senate they were compensating gate agents to target passengers’ bag sizes, resulting in extra fees or denied boarding, have now turned a corner.

According to a press release, not only will Frontier be offering free checked bags, but a whole bunch of other freebies that just might lure travelers back in to trust their airline.

“At the end of the day, travelers just want to be valued”. “We’re bringing back the things people love about flying – free bags, free seat selection, and flexibility – without the extra fees. No games, just great value.”- Barry Biffle, CEO, Frontier Airlines

Frontier’s Summer Of Freebies

Who could’ve seen this coming? The most notoriously stringent budget airline in the States is showing some grace.

Of course, one has the right to question if it’s in good faith or simply a marketing ploy, given how surprising Southwest’s sudden shift in policies was last week.

Regardless, every Frontier traveler flying from today through August 18 has the chance to score some major freebies.

So, let’s break this down.

Free Economy Bundle:

Any avid budget traveler knows most airlines in this category have tiers to choose from, and that’s where most make the mistake of not reading the fine print.

For the time being, you won’t have to as all travelers will receive the perks of Frontier’s Economy Bundle:

• Free carry-on bag (in addition to ‘Personal Item’)
• Free seat selection
• Free flight changes

One Very Important Detail: Don’t Miss The Deadline

Again, every time you book a trip with a budget airline, reading the fine print is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your budget flight indeed remains a budget flight.

I’m not talking about going line by line through the never-ending Terms of Service, rather reading the details of the itemized charges before checking out and making you understand your baggage allowance.

In this case, with the new promotion, all travelers will need to book their summer trip by March 24 or else you’ll miss out on the deal.

How To Score A Free Checked Bag

Scoring a free checked bag is slightly more complicated than other aforementioned freebies. Those are available from today through August 18, but the free checked bag promotion has a shorter window.

Unfortunately, spring breakers won’t be able to pack their beer bongs, novelty hats, and inflatable flamingos without paying a very confusing checked bag fee (see here).

The free checked bag requires a promo code: FREEBAG. Easy enough, right?

This code is valid for all bookings between May 28, 2025 and August 18, 2025 and the same March 24 booking deadline applies.

In the terms of the promotion, Frontier states: “To receive promotional pricing, customer must enter promo code FREEBAG during new flight purchase made by 11:59pm Eastern time on March 24, 2025 for travel from May 28, 2025 through August 18, 2025. Limit one free Checked Bag per person, per direction, weight limit applies“.

It doesn’t appear Frontier is limiting travelers’ free bags to only domestic routes, and they actually fly to some really cool international places, such as Punta Cana, Puerto Vallarta, and most recently, Aruba and Honduras.

My Experience Flying Frontier

I’ve flown Frontier too many times to count, but also too many times I care to remember — and it’s not just the bag-policing.

I’m not here to trash the airline, but when their CEO releases quotes like “We’ve always had heart” after paying gate agents to target their own customers and “If travelers show us the love, we’ll make these perks permanent”, I don’t know about you, but it rubs me the wrong way as a passionate traveler and journalist.

Especially, when I just tried to fly Frontier March 16 from San Francisco to San Diego with what should’ve been a seamless hour-and-a-half long flight only to be delayed for about 3 hours and ultimately cancelled ‘due to weather’, yet somehow Frontier’s San Francisco – Los Angeles flight still managed to take off that same evening.

Funny how that works.

Frontier left us with no option for a direct route back to San Diego in the coming days. The only other option was to take a 15-hour journey with a long layover for what should have been an hour-and-a-half flight.

My girlfriend and I reluctantly decided to bite the bullet by overpaying for a rental car and drove overnight back home to San Diego that there’s less than a zero percent chance Frontier will reimburse.

These are the type of situations you can find yourself in by flying not just Frontier, but budget airlines in general.

Free checked bag or not, if your airline leaves you stranded, you’ll be forking over a lot more than the amount you saved.

It’s a challenge in today’s world to find anything truly free, often inciting thoughts of “what’s the catch?” and rightfully so.

With taxes, sneaky fees, and “gotcha” tactics, travelers often have to hawk-eye anything deemed ‘free’.

The free train (#43) leaves for Hua Hin from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at 7:30am every Saturday and Sunday until March 30.

The full one-way journey takes approximately 3 hours, so you’ll arrive with plenty of time to enjoy the day beachside, market-hopping, or taking it easy at an aforementioned resort.

Along the ride, passengers are provided with free snacks, souvenirs, and even a towel as a keepsake.

Don’t worry; it’s not to cool down from the heat. The train is equipped with air conditioning.

1. Visit the official train carrier website
2. Choose “General Customer”
