You know that rare hotel that feels both grand and easy at the same time? That was British Colonial Nassau for me.

From the second I stepped into the lobby (high ceilings, heritage details, and that cool, old-school confidence), the “British Colonial” name made perfect sense.

The hotel has anchored this stretch of waterfront for over a century (rebuilt grandly in 1924 after an earlier fire), and locals know it like a favorite meeting place. Proms, weddings, and more are a staple here and have been for many years, just ask the staff!

After a major refresh and reopening, it’s back to being the downtown Nassau icon—only polished and more comfortable than ever.

A Reset I Didn’t Know I Needed

My arrival ritual was simple: gym, then beach. The fitness center did exactly what I needed (shake off the flight and switch my brain to island mode) and then I walked straight out to the private beach cove to grab a lounger.

It was one of those bright Nassau afternoons where the water looks almost unreal, with cruise ships coming in and out across the harbor.

Watching that slow-motion choreography became a theme of the stay; there’s something surprisingly peaceful about it when you’re on the hotel’s sand or by the pools.

Why British Colonial Works As A Base

Location is the cheat code here. You barely need to drive because most of what you want is within minutes. Bay Street, museums, snacks, and quirky one-off experiences are right at your doorstep.

The property sits right on Nassau Harbour, walkable to the cruise port and downtown sights, which makes “let’s just pop out for…” the default.

Meanwhile, back at base the vibes are resort-y: two oceanfront pools, a private beach, and a low-stress towel/lounger setup that makes quick dips the easiest decision of your day. Plus the bar right next to the beach serves anything you could want (order a Sands for me!).

The Heritage, Reimagined

British Colonial’s story is a great dinner-table icebreaker, and I learned all about it from the Marketing team’s very own Shirlen Godet, who I was lucky enough to get to know and learn from on my trip.

The site’s early hotel opened in 1901, was rebuilt in 1924 after a fire, became the storied “Grand Dame” of Nassau, and, after recent investment and a top-to-bottom redesign, reopened as an independent property in late 2023/early 2024.

The result keeps the classic bones you can feel in the public spaces, with fresh rooms and resort areas that fit how we actually travel now. It looks timeless—but it runs modern.

Eat & Drink (and don’t forget to be merry!)

I found myself toggling between a few distinct vibes on property: a dressed-up, Old-Bahamas supper-club feel when I wanted a proper night out, and an easygoing tavern for cocktails and comfort classics when I just wanted to unwind. A

nd when I was craving something lighter and ocean-forward, there’s also a sushi-and-noodle counter leaning into fresh Bahamian seafood with an Asian twist—simple, social, and exactly right after a beach session.

Sakana Noodle & Sushi Bar — “Featuring the freshest of seafood from local Bahamian waters and a traditional Asian-inspired noodle bar”… Expect sushi, sashimi, ramen, and yakisoba. Highly recommend this spot, it was probably my favorite!

Mahogany Club — elevated Bahamian cuisine with heritage ingredients reimagined in a supper-club setting.

Woodes Rodgers Tavern — the all-day social hub for cocktails and comfort bites (often with live music).

When Plans Change: Our Pirate-Flavored Detour

We were supposed to do a Nassau driving food tour, but decided to swap things out for a more adventurous day… we pivoted to a pirate-leaning island circuit instead with Pirate Jeep Tours.

It turned out to be a highlight: a bat-filled sea cave (you’ll find “The Caves” along West Bay), an old limestone quarry area called the Queen’s Staircase, and a rum stop—John Watling’s Distillery, a beloved in-town estate where tastings double as a history lesson.

The British Colonial’s location makes last-second swaps easy. You’re minutes from both history and a good pour.

Rain Plan That Actually Worked

Goombay Summer Festival—the big Ministry of Tourism street celebration—was rained out during our visit, so we leaned into a more local evening with live music instead, the British Colonial has live music a few nights a week so definitely check it out!

If your dates line up, Goombay is a lively crash course in Bahamian culture (Junkanoo rush-outs, rake ’n’ scrape rhythms, food, art), but Nassau delivers culture even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

DIY Nassau: Bush Tea, “Chicken In A Bag,” And Junkanoo Joy

Weather scratched our snorkeling boat the next day, so we built our own little island crawl, and that’s part of the beauty of the British Colonial’s perfect location. A pivot in plans is so easy when you are surrounded by so many options!

Since we had swapped a food tour for a pirate tour the day before, we decided to create our own tour with food along the way. If you want to check out some really great local haunts, take these for spin:

• Bush tea shop: herbal blends and stories poured in equal measure at Tasty Teas. The founder reportedly healed from cancer in large part because of the teas she created.
• Bamboo Shack: the fast-food legend. Order Chicken-in-the-Bag—crispy thighs, onions, condiments, served… in a paper bag—and thank me later.
• Museum of Junkanoo: bright, kinetic, and perfect for understanding the soul of Nassau’s most famous celebration. I didn’t really know what to expect here but it was a blast, and we even had our own little party at the end with instruments and all!

All of it was close by; none of it felt like a heavy lift. Getting back to the hotel to unwind was a breeze.

Peak Connection: People-to-People Dinner

The People-to-People program pairs visitors with Bahamian hosts for real conversation and home-style meals.

Our farewell dinner through the program ended up being the most meaningful part of the trip: stories, recipes, neighborhood tips—and that soft, “you’re a guest, not a customer” glow you can’t script. They even had a steel drummer waiting for us when we arrived!

I spoke with the adult son of our host for over an hour and learned all about his life, what having his son recently has been like in Nassau, and swapped stories like we’d been friends for a long time.

If you’re curious about Bahamian life beyond resort walls, this is the door you want to knock on.

Beach & Pool Practicalities

• Private beach + ship-spotting: Bring a book… and then ignore it when a mega-ship slides by. It’s part of the fun from the sand or the pool deck.
• Two pools (one heated): Easy in/ out. If you’re day-passing from a cruise, you’ll check in at the Heritage Gift Shoppe and be beach-ready fast.
• Walkability: Figure 8–12 minutes to/ from the cruise port depending on crowds; cab is quick if you’ve over-shopped Bay Street.

Who It’s For (And Who Should Pick Elsewhere)

Great fit if you: want a downtown base with resort perks; love heritage hotels; plan to museum-hop, snack-graze, and do short half-day excursions without car dependence.

Maybe look elsewhere if you: want a sprawling mega-resort with slides/ lazy rivers; plan to spend all day every day on a long, open-ocean beach instead of a calm harbour cove.

British Colonial hits a sweet spot I didn’t expect: classic without being stuffy, central without the city hassle, and resort-easy without needing a shuttle for every little thing.

I loved the rhythm of gym-dip-snack-wander-repeat, the ship-watching from the beach, and how quickly we could pivot when weather nudged our plans. Cap it with a People-to-People dinner and a spin through Junkanoo culture, and you’ve got a Nassau stay that feels connected—rooted in the place instead of floating above it.

If you’re after a quick Bahamas escape where your hotel is part of the story, put British Colonial at the top of your list.

Pardon my Clint Eastwood mean mug, but it’s time to unveil the good, the bad, and the ugly regarding my recent stay at Hilton Cancun.

Don’t worry – the good far outweighs room for improvement. This luxe hideaway offered unmatched service top to bottom with spotless grounds, incredible international cuisine, timely room service, and a pair of beachfront pools to die for with attentive wait staff — not to mention my room’s ocean-view wrap-around balcony that had me questioning if I should ever make my way downstairs for dinner, or simply opt for room service.

This all-inclusive resort was quite literally a breath of fresh air along the breezy Caribbean shores away from the chaotic and overly curated “Hotel Zone” that Cancun is all too famous for.

What stood out the most for Hilton Cancun was its prime real estate. If you’ve ever been to Cancun, you know every millimeter is accounted for with ritzy resorts stacked like Legos…but not here.

As you make your way through the opening gates, you’ll find a vast preserve of lush mangroves with an occasional spider monkey sighting, a connecting Waldorf Astoria resort and spa, and sweeping views of the open sea.

Scoring a poolside lounger, or better yet, reserving a Bali Bed was never an issue. Despite being Americans’ favorite international destination, I couldn’t have been more impressed with this secluded hideaway while others in the Hotel Zone fight for space in pool foam parties nobody asked for.

If you’re looking to book a Cancun vacation but hesitant about dealign with crowds, look no further than Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort.

Felt Like Home Away From Home

Believe it or not, this was my first trip to Cancun. I know, I know…I’m way late to the party.

On the flight here, I couldn’t help but wonder how “touristy” Cancun would feel, but I truly lucked out booking Hilton Cancun.

Those hesitations were quickly alleviated as my driver took what seemed to be a never-ending road away from a busy highway to one of the most relaxing resorts I’ve had the pleasure of visiting.

There is construction nearby for what appears to be another hotel tower, but I never heard any echoes of jackhammers or drills to ruin my poolside Zen.

As soon as I arrived, I was greeted with a welcome drink and escorted to my room my friendly attendants who showed me how easy it was to book room service — all you do is scan a QR code on the flip side of your wristband, and voila! Your choice of sandwiches, burgers, or pizza arrive in about an hour.

My room was one of my favorite in recent memory (and I’ve been a traveling fool lately!) If you can swing it, request Room 4060. It’s a spacious corner room with a shower bigger than my whole apartment.

Best of all, the room offered unmatched ocean views and aforementioned wrap-around balcony that I used for both work and pleasure.

There was not a single flaw with my room — no thin walls, no broken tv remote, no questionable stains.

The Kingsize bed was heavenly, wifi was speedy, the shower’s water pressure was spot on, and there were many channels in English, though watching CNN’s talking heads isn’t the ‘home away from home’ feeling I’m talking about — it’s the warm, attentive service, posh comforts, and seclusion that had me wishing I could stay longer than a weekend.

Let’s Talk Food: Build-Your-Own-Fajitas & Beachside Ceviche

Remember, Hilton Cancun is an all-inclusive destination. I guarantee if you arrive hungry, you’ll leave happy. Just know there are some upcharges for certain items like lobster and various wines.

The resort offers ’12 all-inclusive culinary experiences’ as their website states. Here is where I ate, and I honestly recommend all of them:

• La Luce (my favorite)
• Auma (delicious Argentinian Steakhouse)
• Vela (a buffet of rotating dishes)
• Maxal Taqueria (unassuming taco stand with ocean view)

La Luce stood out the most to me. It’s a traditional trattoria with wood-fired pizzas and impeccable seafood. While I didn’t get pizza because I’m already a doughboy on the scales, I did opt for fresh seafood and a couple of rounds of wine — definitely order the Gamberi Picotta!

The apps, entree, and yes, I did take a couple of bites of dessert, were all phenomenal. The scenic patio and salty breeze made it even more enjoyable.

But there were a couple of unique aspects that I couldn’t pass up for lunch each day. The first being a build-your-own-fajita station inside Vela, probably the most popular lunch spot on-site.

The other was tucked away in a corner by one of the pools — a taco stand looking straight out of Mexico City next to a ceviche stand looking straight out of Baja.

I couldn’t help but indulge in both, but ceviche was the clear winner between the two, serving fresh fish, octopus, and shrimp.

Cancun’s Seaweed Invasion: Is Hilton Cancun Affected?

You probably noticed above Cancun’s waters looking more like the Tijuana River than postcard blue waters we’re all accustomed to — it’s true.

Cancun is seeing crazy amounts of sargassum, an icky brown algae, wash ashore and putting a damper on vacationers picture-perfect beach days.

In fact, some have wondered if they should visit Cancun at all right now. Having seen the beaches myself, I say yes, you should still visit because there are easy ways around it.

While Hilton Cancun’s shores weren’t having their best moment, it’s to no fault of their own. Their workers are running themselves ragged trying to keep beaches clean and pristine, whether it be installing barriers or hauling off heaps of seaweed by tractor all day long — it’s just impossible with Cancun’s beaches reaching ‘crisis levels’.

But, here’s a Hilton Cancun loophole. The resort offers a free shuttle to another Hilton property, Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla.

From here, it’s about a $4 Uber ride to Blue Flag-certified Playa Delfines. I visited just as described. There was far less seaweed and the waters were Maldives-level clear.

There’s one other loophole too. Hilton Cancun offers day trips to Akumal near Tulum through a third-party tour guide. You can swim with sea turtles and dive cenotes for only $120!

Would I Visit Again?

Next time I visit Cancun, I hope to stay longer and Hilton Cancun will be at the top of my list.

This was a great first taste of Cancun – literally! There’s also some really cool experiences I hope to try next time that just didn’t fit my tight schedule this time around:

• Exclusive access to the Waldorf Astoria Spa Riviera Maya next door
• Wine, Tequila, and Mezcal tastings
• Fresh coconuts
• Curated picnics

Overall, I had an awesome time even with the beaches feeling off-limits. The resort is so quiet and relaxing, it was a recharge I didn’t even know I needed.

My one disappointment with Hilton Cancun was neither pool had a swim-up bar, albeit the waitstaff was prompt and attentive, especially when booking the Bali Bed.

Conversely, even without a swim-up bar, the fact that you can walk down at any time and score a front row lounger overlooking the ocean was an unexpected perk I delighted in each day.

The Mediterranean covers a substantial chunk of our planet.

This sprawling region can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but if there’s one common denominator, it’s that the Med is the ultimate place to let your stresses melt away.

Whether it be Greece, Turkiye, or breathtaking Italian islands, not to mention a treasure trove of lesser-known paradises in between, travelers far and wide seek out Mediterranean shores for the picture-perfect beach day, and rightfully so.

But there’s one country that’s been slowly gaining steam like a classic locomotive and that’s the lovely country of Montenegro, which has become not only a digital nomad haven for its widespread affordability and welcoming locals, but a huge draw as an alternative to more popular destinations without sacrificing the stunning beauty and laid-back lifestyle we can only dream of back home.

The proof couldn’t be clearer: the latest report shows Montenegro’s ritzy resort town nestled between the Bay of Kotor’s tranquil waters and postcard mountain backdrops is already seeing with a 30.4% surge in visitors compared to 2024.

Time to pack your bags!

Tivat: Montenegro’s Resort-Laden Dreamscape

Ever heard of Tivat? Likely not unless you’re a globetrotting travel junkie like us at Travel Off Path.

But there’s no doubt Tivat is creeping up in the shadows of its trendy neighbor Albania as one of the Balkans’ most sought-after vacation spots.

Tivat is the definition of a laid-back vacation. Sit seaside with sensational eats a glass of cheap local wine, relax poolside at a fab resort, or venture to one of many gorgeous beaches along the Adriatic in close reach.

Of course, the Bay of Kotor is also home to many beaches, but going a little further to the coast offers a more pristine setting as some of the Bay’s beaches can be a little rocky to enjoy a nice swim.

If it were me booking a trip, I’d have Plavi Horizonti circled in red as my go-to spot for sun-kissed shores.

No matter where you are in or around Tivat, the atmosphere is truly dreamlike as the townscape is sandwiched between vibrant blue waters and staggering mountains.

Is Tivat Affordable?

Perhaps best of all, if you’re going to venture all the while to Balkans, it’s safe to say day-to-day prices are worth the trip.

While Montenegro has seen an increase in flights across Europe, it’s still low-key enough to not see inflated costs like many other notable getaways.

Tivat is arguably the flashiest city of Montenegro. As such, to get the full Tivat experience, a grand waterfront stay is a must.

Food, wine, excursions, and transit are all budget-friendly, but you’ll want to plan ahead booking a resort.

Among the cheapest of the region is a familiar name back home: Waikiki Beach Resort at $182 this summer, but no promises getting lei’d.

Definitely check out the spacious apartments and arrive early to score a barstool at their very own beach bar with a wide-ranging menu of fresh foods and hand-crafted cocktails.

For what it’s worth, Waikiki tops the rankings for Tivat’s best 2025 hotels too. There are a handful of other posh options too for those of us with fatter wallets (definitely not me):

• Royal Blue Resort & Residences
• Porto Montenegro Residences
• Rosic Apartments

How To Get Here

One thing we’ve skipped thus far is Tivat’s vibrant marina, often serving as a cruise port as the main method of getting here with name brand cruises like Ponant, Silversea, and Seabourn.

These may not ring a bell like Disney and Carnival, so they’re best served for Americans looking for a full-blown European adventure.

However, as mentioned previously, it’s actually air traffic seeing a huge spike. No, there’s no nonstops to the U.S., but summer is made for adventure!

Tivat’s small airport is expected to serve 1.3 million passengers in 2025, meaning it’s easy to connect.

Americans can hop from the following hubs directly, easily reaching Tivat with just one layover:

• Belgrade
• Istanbul
• Berlin
• Oslo
• Copenhagen
• Paris (ORY)
• Barcelona
• Brussels

Just know many of Tivat’s flight routes are seasonal. Otherwise, you’ll want to fly into Montenegro’s capital Podgorica, which is largely considered a pass-through city anyway.

My recent stay at the Grand Velas Boutique Hotel Los Cabos wasn’t just a vacation; it was a meticulously crafted experience in luxury travel, where every desire was anticipated and every detail a delightful surprise. Unveiling Unparalleled Luxury: My Jaw-Dropping Suite

Stepping into my Grand Class King Suite felt like entering a private luxury apartment in Cabo. At a sprawling 2,000 square feet, it offered an incredible sense of space. What’s truly remarkable is that even their smaller luxury suites boast the same exceptional amenities, each featuring a private jacuzzi or a plunge pool on the balcony – a hallmark of exclusive resorts in Los Cabos.

Inside, the premium amenities continued relentlessly. Imagine finding Dyson hair dryers and optional Dyson straighteners in the bathroom – an unprecedented touch for an all-inclusive hotel! The Vitamin C-infused shower left my skin feeling incredibly refreshed and soft. Sumptuous robes beckoned immediate relaxation, and the gourmet Nespresso machine ensured my caffeine cravings were always satisfied.

From the top-tier bedding on the incredibly comfortable king-sized bed to the luxurious Molton Brown bath products and plush sofas, uncompromising quality was evident in every detail. And the mini-bar? Absolutely incredible, stocked with an impressive selection of beverages, fine wines, and gourmet snacks – all part of this ultimate all-inclusive package. My expectations for luxury accommodations in Los Cabos were truly exceeded.

And then there was the food – a true highlight for any luxury traveler. An all-inclusive resort that offers a tomahawk steak? Believe it! At Loto Robata Grill, under the guidance of the acclaimed 2-Michelin-star chef Sidney Schutte, I savored a perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth tomahawk that redefined my understanding of fine dining at an all-inclusive. This wasn’t just good food; it was a world-class culinary experience, a reason in itself to book a gourmet getaway in Los Cabos.

But the culinary adventures didn’t end there. Room service wasn’t a limited selection; it was a comprehensive, gourmet experience, including a delightful breakfast spread delivered right to my suite’s dining table each morning – perfect for a romantic breakfast in Cabo. Beyond the Boutique property, guests also have access to the diverse restaurants at the main Grand Velas resort, including Cocina de Autor, where a Michelin-star chef crafts an extraordinary 8-course tasting menu – a must-try for foodies visiting Los Cabos.

Even by the stunning infinity pool, the service was impeccable. Poolside treats included freshly made guacamole and incredibly flavorful rib-eye tacos. And the drinks? Top-shelf premium liquors were poured, ensuring every sip was as luxurious as the stunning surroundings – ideal for a luxury adults-only escape feel, enhancing the serene and sophisticated atmosphere.

The indulgence at Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos truly extends outdoors, highlighted by their stunning two-level heated infinity pool. This impressive feature overlooks the breathtaking beach and the powerful, mesmerizing ocean waves. While the beachfront location offers stunning views and the sound of the powerful Pacific waves, the strong currents and rough surf directly in front of Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos generally make it unsuitable for casual swimming.

Lounging poolside is an experience in itself, with luxurious tanning beds and impeccable service. The attentive staff anticipate every need, from moving your umbrella to keep you shaded as the sun moves, to providing plush towels the moment you step out of the water, and ensuring your drink is never empty. The convenience of a swim-up bar and the luxurious poolside bathrooms further elevate this oasis of relaxation.

With a fitting brand for the situation, One&Only opens their one and only resort in the U.S. If you’re unfamiliar, you can find other lavish resorts in vacation icons like The Maldives, Los Cabos, and Dubai, among other bucket-list getaways.

One&Only Moonlight Basin’s website is up and running for a sneak peak of what’s come next summer.

One of the major highlights fitting for Montana’s exclusivity is 19 chic cabins and 62 private homes on site, which will surely cost a pretty penny.

Gather your friends to pitch in for the trip of a lifetime as there are 5+ bedrooms in each of the posh private homes.

There may be at least 5 months left before commencing a ribbon-cutting ceremony, but you can preview the resort grounds by viewing their descriptive map, which features a world-class spa, ski lodge, gondola, and soon-to-be-named ‘specialty restaurant’.

Come summertime, there will be a variety of adventurous activities in the region’s lush nature, such as hiking, archery, or fishing and canoeing Ulery’s Lake, plus access to The Reserve, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course claiming to be his ‘most beautiful course’ yet.

From Lodges To Resorts: Big Sky’s Top-Rated Stays

Since you have half a year before you can check out One&Only’s latest venture, you can still opt for other incredible stays if you’re not into playing the waiting game.

According to TripAdvisor, these are the top 5 luxury hotels in Big Sky: (based on traveler ranking)

If you’re more of a cozy cabin, s’more-roasting type like myself, don’t fret; Big Sky has you covered.

While TripAdvisor doesn’t share recommendations for rustic lodges or wooded cabins, I did my own research for you (and maybe myself one day).

There are many listings fitting the bill on Vrbo and Airbnb, but I’d pick Cowboy Heaven Cabins. What’s more Montana than that?

These homey log cabins are ‘ski-in ski-out’ with private hot tubs and comfortably house up to 6 people.

Just know there’s really no such thing as “budget stays” within Big Sky, but the pristine resort town holds rave reviews claiming it’s well worth a splurge.

If you’re over mainstream news (and who wouldn’t be by now?), then there’s one remarkable city that always seems to slip through the cracks as more than just a pass-through city.

Chances are, if you’ve ever taken a road trip on I-10, then you’ve passed through one of the Southwest’s top hidden gems, yet nearly 700,000 people call it home.

Largely ignored even by its own state, with locals commonly mislabelling it as “Mexico” and misinformed characterizations since it’s lined by “the wall”, fellow Texans and general travelers have long been missing out on the cultural delights and affordable luxury of El Paso.

Yes, El Paso – the one often portrayed as a run-down desert town and unsafe hub for illegal migrant crossings.

As a former resident, I can attest that, yes, there are occasional border issues, but one small sub-section of a city shouldn’t represent the masses when there’s astounding nature, prideful, friendly locals, and an ever-changing downtown district beginning to buzz again.

The Forgotten City Of Texas

Despite breaking tourism records in 2023, El Paso still flies well under the radar except when talking heads spew negative depictions of what’s actually an awesome city to visit.

Even if you haven’t brushed up on Rosetta Stone lessons lately, you can probably surmise El Paso translates to “The Pass” in English, and that’s largely how El Paso has been visited – just a stayover on to somewhere else.

But El Paso deserves to be your next weekend getaway, at the very least. If you enjoy phenomenal Mexican food ranging from classic hole-in-the-walls and cart vendors to high-end Michelin-worthy eateries, El Paso has you covered, and it exudes authenticity, unlike that other record-breaking Mexican-influenced city.

No offense, San Antonio, but El Paso’s food is unmatched, and one hike in the Franklin Mountains puts your “river” to shame.

Despite many Texans pretending the Lone Star State’s southwest tip doesn’t exist, popular Texas publication Texas Monthly had the huevos to recognize two El Paso restaurants with the best tacos in the state:

Of course, indulging in local cuisine is great way to experience any destination, this is only a tidbit of El Paso’s cultural delights.

Not Just Margs & Tacos: Discover Historic Neighborhoods & Important Landmarks

You’ll find every legitimate Mexican dish under the sun in El Paso, with a special emphasis on Southwestern and Chihuahua influence, given the close proximity to Ciudad Juarez.

Texan and Mexican history blend timelines, and there’s no better place to experience the best of both worlds than a plate served in El Paso, but to witness the history itself is another story, and you can do that too.

One overlooked gem, even for locals, is in the next town over, Socorro. Here, you’ll find the El Paso Mission Trail home to an immaculately preserved glimpse of the past, with stunning historic Missions playing a significant role in a former trade route spanning from Mexico City to Santa Fe.

In El Paso proper, the beauty of exploring the city’s historic neighborhoods is you never know what you’ll find.

Check out Sunset Heights, Manhattan Heights and my old stomping grounds, Segundo Barrio, for rows of streets oozing timeless charm and hidden gems like my favorite restaurant you’d otherwise never know about, Jalisco Cafe (only open on weekends).

Free Public Transit & Affordable Luxury

Downtown has continued to undergo a mass transformation since the pandemic’s ghost town vibes.

As WinterFest recently transformed downtown into a desert’s version of a winter wonderland, there are also many new bars, restaurants, cafes, and the city’s first-ever capsule hotel, breathing new life into formerly barren streets.

Getting around in El Paso’s splendid winter weather is easy, but if you plan to visit in the scorching summer, you may want to take advantage of the city’s free Streetcar connecting downtown to the high West Side.

Downtown is likely where you’ll want to make your base no matter the season. With a plethora of upscale hotels and rooftops with sweeping views, you’ll be shocked by how nice El Paso really can be – a far cry from its reputation as a bland desert town.

My favorite is The Plaza Pioneer Hotel (commonly referred to as “The Plaza”), recently awarded a Michelin Key and can be booked in the low $100s.

Dreaming of a sunny getaway this winter but a jam-packed Cancun or even an exceedingly-pricey Maui do not get you particularly excited?

What if you jet off instead to a beautiful island where dreamy beaches line turquoise waters as far as the eyes can see, jungles are dotted with historic temples and waterfalls, and perhaps more surprisingly even, luxury resorts start at $134?

No, it’s not too good to be believed. It’s just how it is in Phuket, Thailand:

Is This The Gateway To Paradise?

The largest island in Thailand, covering a landmass of roughly 210 square miles, Phuket is both a tropical haven, just over 455,000 people are lucky to call home, and a fast-growing resort destination that’s stolen the Western gaze recently.

Just this year, it is expected o host between 13 and 14 million guests, and significant number of those are Europeans, Australians… and Americans, who are all driving up revenue, with spending in tourism services already higher in 2024 than it was in a pre-crisis 2019.

Unless you’ve been in traveler or digital nomad circles, you might not have been properly introduced to Phuket and its natural (and manmade) wonders––in that case, allow us to give you the shortest possible overview:

Stunning Beaches For Miles On End

If relaxing by a beach is your primary reason for flying halfway across the world, you’re spoiled for choice here––and they’re all within short driving distance of many of the resorts! For instance, there’s a lively Kata Beach, with its many seafood restaurants and hotels.

In Kata Noi, on the other hand, it’s a much quieter, peaceful environment with smaller crowds and limited development; for postcard-ready, teal-colored seas crashing against stunning geological formations, Ya Nui is the place to go.

Let’s not forget the sandy Freedom Beach, its laid-back vibes and serene waters, or even the antithetical Patong, a buzzing alternative lined with beach clubs and party venues––as you can see, finding a swimming spot to your liking in Phuket is hardly a challenge.

Amazing Sights

Contrary to your usual Caribbean beach getaway, however, Phuket is a lot more than just beaches: from discovering the monumental Big Buddha, perched on a hill overlooking the jungle, to exploring protected wildlife reserves, there’s plenty to see and do.

The Elephant Care Camp is a must-see if you’re an enthusiast of the playful giants, and booking this guided activity, not only will you learn more about conservation efforts and see them in the wild, you’ll even get to bathe with them for only $54.59! How exciting!

More interested in the cultural sights instead? Tick off Wat Chalong, one of the holiest temples on the island, visit a traditional cashew nut factory, and top it off by exploring Phuket City and its intact, 19th-century historic center on a day trip around the island starting at $41.65.

Visit The Beach

There are enough sights in Phuket to keep you busy for weeks on end, though some would argue no visit is complete without a little island-hopping adventure: indeed, there are 31 other equally beautiful islands in the vicinity, and it’d be a shame to miss them.

Especially when the Phi Phi Islands, home to Maya Bay, probably the most famous beach in Thailand, which provided the backdrop for the Leonardo DiCaprio-starred The Beach, and the Similan archipelago, with all its lush rainforests and crystal-clear lagoons, are a short boat ride away.

As for the best way to do it? It has to be this 7-island tour by long tail boat leaving from Phuket: other than the bucket list experiencing of riding the traditional floating vessel, it includes stops in Monkey Beach, Maya Bay, and the coral-fringed Bamboo Island––and it’s $33.77 per person!

Phuket Is A Budget-Friendly Sunny Getaway

As you might have guessed based on the price of excursions, Phuket is one of the most affordable tropical destinations in the world: it may be on the pricier end of Southeast Asia, for sure, but from food to transportation to accommodation, it is still dirt cheap by American standards.

On average, tourists spend $42 on meals per day, $12 on local transport, and $123 on hotels, as estimated by Budget Your Trip, bringing the total cost of a one-week stay in Phuket to $934––good luck surviving one entire week in the Mexican Caribbean on under a thousand bucks!

Of course, the more luxury you crave, the pricier it can get, but not to the point you’ll be breaking the bank: this winter, the cheapest all-inclusive offer is a ‘lux’ suite at the Barcelo Coconut Island Phuket, starting at a very reasonable $216.

Alternatively, a ‘no extras’ stay with breakfast only is an even cheaper $134: you still get all the amazing amenities, access to the 3 oceanfront pools, free cabanas, and sun loungers.
