Even Californians seek out warmer climates as the chilly coast ignites ‘hoodie weather’.

There’s no better place for Vitamin D and summer attire than a quick road trip to Palm Springs, California’s sunniest city.

This classic getaway, made famous by Hollywood’s elite before the TMZ era, has long been the ultimate hideout for anyone looking to recharge under the beaming desert sun.

Palm Springs is a throwback, where some would say the 60s never ended as there are still retro motels decked out in hippie van artwork among other various odes to the past.

This was my third visit to Palm Springs and as they say, “the third time’s a charm”.

This trip was the best one yet thanks to Palm Mountain Resort & Spa, mere steps from an array of downtown delights, including trendy restaurants, art museums, and towering Marilyn Monroe statue.

Moreover, as tempting as it was to explore the main strip, I found myself doing far less urban exploration than I normally would.

With their unmatched hospitality (especially treating my dog like the princess she is), a year-round climate-controlled pool, steamy hot tub, fire pits, and on-site day spa, why would I want to leave?

When Hunger Strikes: The Main Reason To Leave Resort Grounds

Palm Mountain does not have a restaurant, but being so close to endless food options, that’s why palm-tree laden downtown is a must-visit, mostly to grab a bite to eat or find a happy hour.

In fact, that should be your exact game plan, as Palm Canyon Avenue’s food scene can drain your bank account quickly.

But hey, you’re on vacation. Everyone deserves to splurge every now and then.

Before diving further, this is everywhere my girlfriend and I ate on our 3-day trip. Every meal was fantastic:

First stop: Jimmy B’s Steakhouse

Jimmy B’s is probably the shortest walk from Palm Mountain. Their ‘famous’ meatballs live up to the hype, and the $20 burger was surprisingly worth stretching my usual burger budget.

Second stop: Hot Cookie

Let’s just say this wasn’t the only visit. Their cookies are so good (Betty White-approved) that we had to go back on our last night to snag some road snacks for the drive back to San Diego.

Third stop: Las Casuelas Terraza

No wonder this place has been around since the 50s! If there’s one dish I’d like to think of myself a connoisseur, it’s fajitas.

Las Casuelas nailed it. Our guacamole app was overpriced, but the sotol margs were spot on given how hard it can be to find sotol.

Live music was great too, and even my doggie and I were movin’ and groovin’ on the dance floor. Yeah, those margs hit hard…

Fourth stop: Coachella Valley Brewing Co.

This unsuspecting upper-level hangout was a great spot to watch a football game, sip a local beer, and indulge in bar food that far exceeded our expectations for such a hole-in-the-wall.

Definitely get the buffalo fries!

All that said, every place we went was roughly a 5-10 minute walk from the resort. Plus, you don’t have to worry about drinking one too many since you don’t need to drive.

The resort offers bike cruisers to explore downtown too.

Palm Mountain does have The Marketplace located in the lobby, which is essentially a mini convenience store for poolside snack attacks such as chips, beer, and sports drinks.

Skip The Tram: 2 Hours Is Better Spent Poolside

To clarify, we did not book the Palm Springs popular Aerial Tramway through the hotel, but fellow guests who were loving their stay as much as we were told us they had a magnificent time.

But I knew driving in that the wait was 2 hours long. To make that even less enticing, those same people told us the ride only lasts about 15 minutes up.

Even though it’s said to offer gorgeous, sprawling views 6,000 feet up, that math wasn’t mathin’ for us.

We would much rather spend those lost 2 hours enjoying the crowd-free oasis that is Palm Mountain.

There was never a crowd the whole time we were there, even during the International Film Festival with red carpet events nearby.

Like the coast, come sundown, the desert can get chilly, but we took advantage of their climate-controlled pool that was set perfectly the ward of the nippy air.

The temperature was so perfect, we didn’t feel like we were doing the cold-plunging trend when we swapped the hot tub for the pool.

We spent a solid 6 to 7 hours at the pool and fire pits, overall, all while our dog Reyka supervised us from our room’s shaded patio looking down on us enjoying a glass (or 4 ) of wine.

Is This California’s Most Pet-Friendly Resort?

She was welcomed with her own goodie bag of treats, swag, and of course, a waste bag (gotta go when you gotta go!).

Their staff seemed totally cool having your dog left in the room unattended. In fact, rather than a ‘do not disturb’ door hanger, they offer a ‘pet in room’ sign instead.

As someone who has tried to travel with dogs before, it’s super annoying when hotels treat you like an irresponsible pet owner, forcing you to sign waiver after waiver and claiming your dog can never leave your side.

That’s not the vibe here.

Reyka was treated like royalty the whole time and fell in love with our spacious room for some indoor fetch and sunny patio where she kept stealing my seat!

Talk about spoiled…

We Were Spoiled Too: The Day Spa Is A Must!

Whatever wizardry Nadia conjured made me and Sara feel like brand new people compared to when we walked in.

Sara opted for a Deep Tissue massage and sung Nadia’s praises before it was my turn to be twisted into a human pretzel in the best of ways.

I chose a Swedish massage, which incorporated some deep elbow work into back muscles I didn’t know I had and various stretches I didn’t know my body could make as I creep up on 40.

The spa was spotlessly clean and ambient. Nadia made sure both of us felt comfortable before, during, and after our sessions.

Everything was flawless accept their Venmo account was down, so be prepared for alternative ways to pay.

No More Resort Fees: What You See Is What You Get!

As someone who has sworn off Vegas for good, you don’t have to tell me how much resort fees can deflate a fun vacation.

The goods news at Palm Mountain is there are no hidden fees in their rates, so you don’t have to worry about the ol’ “gotcha” trick.

From May – December, you can expect to see rates as low as $189 per night, while major events may drive that up to $229.

From January – April, winter sun seekers may pay slightly more withs lows of $209 per night and highs of $429 for special events in the area.

n the world of Cancun hospitality, longevity is rare. New resorts pop up every month, trying to steal the spotlight. But Sandos Cancun has been a staple of the Hotel Zone forever, racking up a staggering 18,000+ reviews on Google with a rock-solid 4.7 score.

Numbers like that usually command respect. But we at Travel Off Path don’t trust algorithms; we trust experience. So, we checked in to see if the legend lives up to the hype.

The verdict? It does, but not for the reasons you might think.

Sandos dropped a massive bombshell at the start of 2025: The resort has officially gone Adults-Only.

This isn’t just a policy tweak; it’s a complete vibe shift. Here is our honest, deep-dive review of the new, energetic, and upscale Sandos Cancun.

The New Vibe: “Chic Party,” Not “Spring Break”

Let’s get one thing straight immediately. When we say “party resort,” you probably picture plastic cups, cheap beer, and college chaos.

This is not that.

Sandos has pivoted to a “boutique lifestyle” energy. Think high-end beach club, not frat house. The crowd is diverse, ranging from late 20s to 50s—people who have jobs, money, and taste, but who still want to get loud and have fun.

Around 1:00 PM most days, the energy shifts. The live DJ takes the stage, the dancers come out, and the vibe turns electric. We’re talking foam parties, high-production themed events (the “Angels and Devils” party was a standout), and serious entertainment staff who know how to work a room.

If your goal is to read a book in total silence by a library-quiet pool, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you want to be “seen,” sip premium cocktails, and float on an inflatable flamingo while talented dancers perform on the pool deck, this is paradise.

The Beach: The “Impossible Blue”

Sandos sits on one of the most prime stretches of real estate in the Hotel Zone.

The views from the property are, frankly, ridiculous. We are talking about that “impossible blue” water that looks Photoshopped until you see it with your own eyes.

The resort offers full beach service with loungers and cabanas (for a fee). It doesn’t get better than this for sunbathing.

The Insider Warning: You need to respect the ocean here. The waves in this part of the Hotel Zone can get rough. It isn’t a swimming pool. However, we found a calmer spot nearby and spent over an hour in the water. Just watch the flags and don’t be a hero.

The Rooms: Views To Die For

We stayed in a room with an ocean-view balcony, and honestly, we could have spent the whole trip right there.

The rooms are cozy, but they nail the essentials. The beds are incredibly comfortable—critical after a day of day-drinking in the sun.

Housekeeping was spot on. We didn’t have to ask for anything twice. The daily room service breakfast was prompt, hot, and the perfect way to start the day while staring at the Caribbean.

Key takeaway: If you can upgrade to the ocean view, do it. Waking up to that sunrise is worth every penny.

Dining: The “Cake” Secret

As an all-inclusive, you have access to five restaurants and four bars. We found the food to be consistently solid, with enough variety that you won’t get bored on a week-long trip.

The Mexican theme nights were a highlight, offering endless opportunities to try local flavors.

The Insider Tip: Do not skip the dessert station at the buffet. The pastry team here is on another level. The cakes are made fresh daily and they were a “WOW” moment for us every single time.

Wellness: Detox to Retox

If you are the type who likes to earn their margarita, their gym and spa is legitimate.

They offer oceanfront yoga sessions which is a great way to kickstart the day before the DJ starts spinning.

The spa is world-class. We are talking 13 treatment cabins, a sauna, steam bath, Jacuzzi, and a cold plunge tub. It is the perfect place to reset.

The One “Con” You Need To Know

We promised you an honest review, so here is the only downside we found.

Because Sandos is situated next to a massive resort tower, the three infinity pools lose the sun around 3:00 PM.

The Fix: It’s simple. When the shade hits the pool, move to the beach. The sun stays on the sand much longer, and it’s a quick walk down. Just plan your tanning schedule accordingly.

The Bottom Line

The shift to Adults-Only was the right move for Sandos. They have carved out a specific niche in Cancun: a place for adults who want high-energy fun, Instagrammable moments, and luxury service without the stiffness of a “couples-only” retreat.

The staff was friendly but not over-the-top or “in your face,” allowing you to enjoy the party on your own terms.

If you want a quiet week of meditation, look elsewhere. If you want to sip champagne in a foam party with a chic, international crowd, Sandos Cancun is back on top for 2025.

In a travel world obsessed with brand-new, sprawling “mega-resorts,” it’s a fair question for a savvy traveler: is a 35-year-old resort still a top-tier choice? Or is it a dated icon past its prime?

Here at Travel Off Path, we know that “legacy” can mean one of two things: “tired” or “perfected.” To find out which one applied to the iconic Velas Vallarta, we went to see for ourselves. After 35 years in the game and with a jaw-dropping 4.7-star rating from over 5,000 reviews on Tripadvisor, we had to know: could it possibly live up to the hype?

We stayed, we explored, and we found out exactly what makes this classic legacy resort in Puerto Vallarta shine so brightly after all these years.

An Amazing Location

First things first: convenience. Velas Vallarta is perfectly located in Marina Vallarta, a quick, stress-free five-minute drive from the airport. From the moment you land, you are minutes away from a cold drink and a pool lounger. This is a massive advantage over resorts an hour or more away.

A Lush Oasis, Not A Concrete Jungle

The first thing that strikes you about a “mature” property is its sheer beauty. This isn’t a concrete jungle. The resort has grown into a pristine, green oasis. The grounds are immaculate, with vibrant bougainvillea, towering palm trees, and lush gardens that make it feel like a true tropical escape.

It’s a stunning contrast to new-builds that can often feel sterile. The multi-level pool layout is perfect, with a main pool buzzing with a “good vibe” (not a wild party, but not a dead zone) and a quiet pool tucked away for relaxation.

Modern Comfort Meets Classic Grounds

So the grounds are classic, but what about the rooms? Velas Vallarta is in the final stages of a full renovation of their suites (set for completion by January), and the results are stunning. We stayed in a one-bedroom deluxe suite, and the “modern comfort” part of our headline was immediately evident.

The rooms are massive, with a separate bedroom, a dining table, and a living area with two sofas. But the star of the show is the huge balcony, which had two separate seating areas overlooking the gardens and pools with a partial ocean view.

The all-inclusive mini-bar isn’t “mini” at all—it’s a full-size fridge. And I’ve never seen this before: it was stocked with four types of cereal (and milk!) for the kids, plus microwaveable popcorn for late-night movies. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the AC was cold, and the ceiling fans were a nice touch you don’t see as often anymore.

One important note: our shower was a step-in tub, so if you have mobility issues, I’d recommend inquiring about a fully accessible room when you book.

Last but not definitely not least in my opinion were the two smart TV’s. I can’t count how many times I have been to an all-inclusive resort but they don’t have smart TV’s? Very strange. This isn’t the case at Velas Vallarta. When crawling into bed at night, you can catch up on your latest Netflix, Prime & Disney series.

The All-Inclusive Done Right

The all-inclusive experience here is a masterclass. We had breakfast via 24/7 room service twice, and it was incredible. These are not sample-sized portions; each meal was beautifully presented, arrived hot within 30 minutes, and was delicious.

For dining, you have two main restaurants. For a more casual, open-air meal, La Ribera is the oceanfront spot with incredible views of the bay and mountains. It serves a bountiful breakfast buffet and a great à la carte lunch. I had a gourmet burger there that was seriously juicy and full of flavor—a perfect comfort meal.

The more formal Andrea had Ribeye on the menu, and as a self-proclaimed ribeye guru, I can confirm it was tender and cooked to perfection. Alongside your á la carte main, they also offer an extensive salad and appetizer buffet.

But the real magic happens at their special events. Every Sunday, the resort hosts a Mexican Fiesta, a full-blown party with a massive buffet of authentic dishes, mariachi music, and hilarious interactive shows. Make sure to save room for the churros! They are mouthwateringly delicious.

We also experienced a private beach dinner that completely blew me away. A 7-course tasting meal, a private saxophonist, candles, and stunning decorations, all right on the beach—it was a dream dinner that made our group of 10 feel truly special.

The “Legacy Advantage”: They Anticipate Everything

This is what 35 years of experience gets you, and it’s the single biggest thing that separates Velas Vallarta from its newer competitors: they have service down to a science.

It’s the little things. I never once had to hunt for coffee, sugar, or water in the room—it was always fully stocked. This anticipation of a guest’s needs is my personal make-or-break test for a true luxury resort, and they passed with flying colors. At every single meal, from the fiesta to the pool, my glass was never empty.

Savvy Tip: Leave a small tip in your mini-bar fridge with a note for what you want extra of (like Diet Pepsi or water). They will gladly hook you up.

A Vibe for Every Hour: Culture & Daily Fun

This is where you can really tell the difference between Velas Vallarta and a standard resort. They don’t just have a pool; they have a pulse.

There’s a full schedule of free daily activities if you want to join in, from water aerobics, beach volleyball, and yoga to Spanish lessons, arts and crafts, and even a walking tour of the nearby marina.

They also go all out for holidays, using their gorgeous grounds to create an immersive cultural experience. We were fortunate enough to be there for Day of the Dead, and it was spectacular. They had a walking tour of life-size, artist-made Catrinas winding through the gardens, leading to a massive, traditional altar. It was a beautiful way for guests to take in the culture of such an important day in Mexico.

In the evenings, there are live shows in the main lobby. It’s not a late-night party scene—in the best way. It’s the perfect, fun, and sophisticated vibe to enjoy a few cocktails before you happily go to bed after a long day in the sun.

The Perfect Pool Day (And The Ranch Dressing😅)

The poolside vibe is perfect, but let’s talk about the food. Wings at an all-inclusive can be a real hit-or-miss. These were incredible. Plump, juicy, and served with… the best ranch dressing I’ve ever had. Seriously. I have no idea why it stood out so much, but it was perfect. You had me at, “Would you like extra ranch, sir?”

Even the loungers are a step above—fully padded and so comfortable you’ll be dozing off in the sun.

And for dessert? A full, all-you-can-eat ice cream bar right by the pool with tons of amazing flavors.

The Beach Vibe: A Place to Lounge

The resort is fully beachfront, with a wide stretch of sand packed with an endless supply of lounge chairs. We never had to hunt for a spot.

We noticed most people (ourselves included) preferred the vibrant pool scene, which meant the beach itself was quiet, peaceful, and uncrowded. While the Pacific water here is a bit darker and the sand isn’t the silky-smooth powder of the Caribbean, it’s the perfect, relaxing spot to read a book and listen to the waves. It’s more of a lounging beach than a swimming beach, and for that, it’s excellent.

Our Final Verdict

This resort stole my heart. It may not be the newest or most tech-heavy (though the room-key wristbands are a great touch), but it feels like home, and they know how to make you feel special. The service is impeccable, from the cold towels at check-in to the amazing (and I mean amazing) beachfront massage.

With the newly renovated rooms, the lush jungle feel, and that incredible ranch, Velas Vallarta has proven that “legacy” isn’t just about age; it’s about mastering the art of the perfect vacation.

Secrets has me beat!

Aligning with their “Time Here Is Worth More” theme, through guided meditations and insightful teachings on the Hyatt Inclusive Collection app — a must for navigating Secrets’ extensive selection of restaurants and pools on-site — this is just one of many ways to unwind in luxury on this secluded oasis without a single crowd in sight.

One thing you definitely won’t have to navigate? Screaming kiddos!

This all-inclusive escape is an adults-only haven where you can enjoy swim-up bars, breezy beachfront cabanas, and my favorite spot of all — the upper-level Preferred Club pool, offering unmatched views and supreme privacy.

A Room To Die For

Let’s face it — we live in a world of whiners who hide behind their screens, or behind the spell of local rum-inspired cocktails at one of Secrets St. Lucia’s many bars to indulge in, I encountered a couple of complaints from fellow guests I couldn’t disagree with more.

One guest I chit-chatted with was celebrating her honeymoon and compared her room to a Motel 6. Now, I will admit as I stated previously that some aesthetics aren’t up to snuff for 4-star luxury — but a Motel 6? Really?

Secrets did far more than ‘leave the light on’ for me, and I’m almost positive no budget chain offers oceanfront plunge pools mere steps from crashing waves and fiery skies come sundown.

Upon a swift check-in, “vacation mode” was instantly activated once I stepped foot into my room, even after a long red-eye flight.

Hearing the waves, seeing the palm trees sway, and the vast open sea, I knew being told “welcome home” by the front desk staff was more than a scripted line and that they truly meant it.

The bathroom was spacious, especially the rainfall shower, and the bed was heavenly for a well night’s rest to say the least — and no, that’s not solely because I enjoyed a sip or two…or three or four…of the complimentary bottle of rum.

But the biggest surprise was when I opened the back door to a cozy patio with two-top table and realized I was upgraded with a private oceanfront plunge pool I could use any time of my choosing.

Needless to say, I soaked in as much relaxing downtime as I could with a cold Piton beer from the always-stocked mini fridge, enjoying both the calm of crowd-free mornings and capping the day off with sunsets and moonlight so vivid it looked staged.

Just don’t tell security I went for a few midnight swims in the cove. It’s definitely not fun and you definitely shouldn’t do it 😉…

The Friday Night Block Party Was Lit!

How many foam parties can one really partake in?

If you’re like me and get a little stir crazy being in the same spot for too long, Secrets St. Lucia is just the place to get out and explore with provided excursions to both cultural staples and bucket-list wonders.

Every Friday night in St. Lucia’s capital city of Castries is a block party welcoming hundreds, if not thousands of locals and tourists droppin’ it low to anything from Missy Elliott to Buju Banton.

If you stay at Secrets St. Lucia, the block party (or what locals refer to as the “street party“) is a far cry from the blissful calm of the resort, and this will be the biggest crowd you face as you unavoidably weave through hordes of people, including a few shady characters assuming you’re visiting for the wrong reasons.

Lining the narrow streets are many makeshift bars and hole-in-the-wall vendors firing up the grill for every cut of meat imaginable and serving spicy rum concoctions, from what I’m told is called “The Babymaker”.

I can proudly say the drink isn’t true to its name, but it’s certainly a must-try just to say you did it.

Just know taxis booked through the resort come at a jaw-dropping $120 round-trip (per ride, not per passenger) since the driver sticks around the whole time.

If you’re not splitting the bill, arranging alternative transportation is advised for the approximate 20-minute ride.

Visit The Otherworldly Pitons & A Hidden Cove Where Oprah Vacations

A trip to St. Lucia without witnessing the Pitons is like visiting Mexico City without eating at a taco stand.

Fortunately, a boat tour can pick you up straight from the cove. However, due to strong currents, we had to arrange a trip to Castries to hop aboard.

Benny’s Boats took us straight to The Pitons, the most notable natural attraction this side of the Caribbean, along with lesser-known black-sand beaches.

Rising dramatically offshore, the famous Pitons are St. Lucia’s iconic twin volcanic peaks and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you ask me, yes, it was awesome to see, but the real star of the tour was the islet of Marigot Bay, where one-percenters such as Bill Gates and Oprah vacation to escape us peasants.

If you’re cuckoo for coconuts like me, this is the ultimate hideaway for authentic Caribbean vibes.

Run-down shacks host rum-filled bars, and fresh coconuts serve as the only tableware — and it’s all you need while you wade the calm waters in astounding natural scenery of jungle-covered hills and unmissable yachts and multi-million dollar homes.

Surprise, Surprise: Is St. Lucia The “Nashville” Of The Caribbean?

With nearly 40 countries under my belt, it takes a lot for me to be literally shocked by what I discover at any given destination.

No, it wasn’t the sensational cuisine that was surprisingly delicious (definitely get the Ribeye at Seaside Grill and the Lamb at Morgan’s Pier) or the expertly tailored massage that had me feeling like I walked out of Secrets Spa like Benjamin Button.

It was the entirety of the island’s love for country music that blew my mind. This unexpected cultural twist was backed by our boat captain who shameless said, “All you need in St. Lucia is country music and rum”.

Whether it was taxi drivers blaring twangy hits of yesteryear, boat ride sing-a-longs of Brooks & Dunn, or actual concerts at the resort, it’s safe to say Bob Marley and his 47 sons have been replaced by Tennessee’s finest.

We’re not talking karaoke hour, or even karaoke-level talent — this dude could belt out tunes with the best of Nashville at Secrets’ Thursday night show.

Playing hits like Chattahoochie, the resort dance floor quickly turned into an impromptu honky-tonk for a boot scootin’ boogie, where it wasn’t just American guests who knew the lyrics.

St. Lucia is not only one of the Caribbean’s most sought-after island escapes right now, being hyped by Conde Nast recently, I’m dubbing it the “Nashville” of the Caribbean.

All in all, I had a phenomenal time staying at Secrets St. Lucia Resort & Spa and loved exploring the island, and believe you will too!

You know that rare hotel that feels both grand and easy at the same time? That was British Colonial Nassau for me.

From the second I stepped into the lobby (high ceilings, heritage details, and that cool, old-school confidence), the “British Colonial” name made perfect sense.

The hotel has anchored this stretch of waterfront for over a century (rebuilt grandly in 1924 after an earlier fire), and locals know it like a favorite meeting place. Proms, weddings, and more are a staple here and have been for many years, just ask the staff!

After a major refresh and reopening, it’s back to being the downtown Nassau icon—only polished and more comfortable than ever.

A Reset I Didn’t Know I Needed

My arrival ritual was simple: gym, then beach. The fitness center did exactly what I needed (shake off the flight and switch my brain to island mode) and then I walked straight out to the private beach cove to grab a lounger.

It was one of those bright Nassau afternoons where the water looks almost unreal, with cruise ships coming in and out across the harbor.

Watching that slow-motion choreography became a theme of the stay; there’s something surprisingly peaceful about it when you’re on the hotel’s sand or by the pools.

Why British Colonial Works As A Base

Location is the cheat code here. You barely need to drive because most of what you want is within minutes. Bay Street, museums, snacks, and quirky one-off experiences are right at your doorstep.

The property sits right on Nassau Harbour, walkable to the cruise port and downtown sights, which makes “let’s just pop out for…” the default.

Meanwhile, back at base the vibes are resort-y: two oceanfront pools, a private beach, and a low-stress towel/lounger setup that makes quick dips the easiest decision of your day. Plus the bar right next to the beach serves anything you could want (order a Sands for me!).

The Heritage, Reimagined

British Colonial’s story is a great dinner-table icebreaker, and I learned all about it from the Marketing team’s very own Shirlen Godet, who I was lucky enough to get to know and learn from on my trip.

The site’s early hotel opened in 1901, was rebuilt in 1924 after a fire, became the storied “Grand Dame” of Nassau, and, after recent investment and a top-to-bottom redesign, reopened as an independent property in late 2023/early 2024.

The result keeps the classic bones you can feel in the public spaces, with fresh rooms and resort areas that fit how we actually travel now. It looks timeless—but it runs modern.

Eat & Drink (and don’t forget to be merry!)

I found myself toggling between a few distinct vibes on property: a dressed-up, Old-Bahamas supper-club feel when I wanted a proper night out, and an easygoing tavern for cocktails and comfort classics when I just wanted to unwind. A

nd when I was craving something lighter and ocean-forward, there’s also a sushi-and-noodle counter leaning into fresh Bahamian seafood with an Asian twist—simple, social, and exactly right after a beach session.

Sakana Noodle & Sushi Bar — “Featuring the freshest of seafood from local Bahamian waters and a traditional Asian-inspired noodle bar”… Expect sushi, sashimi, ramen, and yakisoba. Highly recommend this spot, it was probably my favorite!

Mahogany Club — elevated Bahamian cuisine with heritage ingredients reimagined in a supper-club setting.

Woodes Rodgers Tavern — the all-day social hub for cocktails and comfort bites (often with live music).

When Plans Change: Our Pirate-Flavored Detour

We were supposed to do a Nassau driving food tour, but decided to swap things out for a more adventurous day… we pivoted to a pirate-leaning island circuit instead with Pirate Jeep Tours.

It turned out to be a highlight: a bat-filled sea cave (you’ll find “The Caves” along West Bay), an old limestone quarry area called the Queen’s Staircase, and a rum stop—John Watling’s Distillery, a beloved in-town estate where tastings double as a history lesson.

The British Colonial’s location makes last-second swaps easy. You’re minutes from both history and a good pour.

Rain Plan That Actually Worked

Goombay Summer Festival—the big Ministry of Tourism street celebration—was rained out during our visit, so we leaned into a more local evening with live music instead, the British Colonial has live music a few nights a week so definitely check it out!

If your dates line up, Goombay is a lively crash course in Bahamian culture (Junkanoo rush-outs, rake ’n’ scrape rhythms, food, art), but Nassau delivers culture even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

DIY Nassau: Bush Tea, “Chicken In A Bag,” And Junkanoo Joy

Weather scratched our snorkeling boat the next day, so we built our own little island crawl, and that’s part of the beauty of the British Colonial’s perfect location. A pivot in plans is so easy when you are surrounded by so many options!

Since we had swapped a food tour for a pirate tour the day before, we decided to create our own tour with food along the way. If you want to check out some really great local haunts, take these for spin:

• Bush tea shop: herbal blends and stories poured in equal measure at Tasty Teas. The founder reportedly healed from cancer in large part because of the teas she created.
• Bamboo Shack: the fast-food legend. Order Chicken-in-the-Bag—crispy thighs, onions, condiments, served… in a paper bag—and thank me later.
• Museum of Junkanoo: bright, kinetic, and perfect for understanding the soul of Nassau’s most famous celebration. I didn’t really know what to expect here but it was a blast, and we even had our own little party at the end with instruments and all!

All of it was close by; none of it felt like a heavy lift. Getting back to the hotel to unwind was a breeze.

Peak Connection: People-to-People Dinner

The People-to-People program pairs visitors with Bahamian hosts for real conversation and home-style meals.

Our farewell dinner through the program ended up being the most meaningful part of the trip: stories, recipes, neighborhood tips—and that soft, “you’re a guest, not a customer” glow you can’t script. They even had a steel drummer waiting for us when we arrived!

I spoke with the adult son of our host for over an hour and learned all about his life, what having his son recently has been like in Nassau, and swapped stories like we’d been friends for a long time.

If you’re curious about Bahamian life beyond resort walls, this is the door you want to knock on.

Beach & Pool Practicalities

• Private beach + ship-spotting: Bring a book… and then ignore it when a mega-ship slides by. It’s part of the fun from the sand or the pool deck.
• Two pools (one heated): Easy in/ out. If you’re day-passing from a cruise, you’ll check in at the Heritage Gift Shoppe and be beach-ready fast.
• Walkability: Figure 8–12 minutes to/ from the cruise port depending on crowds; cab is quick if you’ve over-shopped Bay Street.

Who It’s For (And Who Should Pick Elsewhere)

Great fit if you: want a downtown base with resort perks; love heritage hotels; plan to museum-hop, snack-graze, and do short half-day excursions without car dependence.

Maybe look elsewhere if you: want a sprawling mega-resort with slides/ lazy rivers; plan to spend all day every day on a long, open-ocean beach instead of a calm harbour cove.

When you hear the stats on the new AVA Resort Cancun, a certain kind of skepticism is natural. With over 1,600 rooms, it is, by any definition, a truly massive property. For seasoned travelers, “massive” can often be a code word for long lines, impersonal service, and that dreaded “burn and churn” mentality where you feel more like a number than a guest.

We at Travel Off Path have visited our fair share of mega-resorts, so we went to check out the property with a healthy dose of skepticism, fully expecting to experience some of these big-resort growing pains.

We were wrong. In fact, we were completely surprised.

The AVA Resort Cancun is that rare unicorn in the world of hospitality: a mega-resort with the intimate soul and vibrant heartbeat of a boutique hotel. Its ability to deliver on both epic scale and personalized service is nothing short of remarkable, and it has immediately established itself as a top-tier contender in the luxury all-inclusive space.

The Heartbeat of the Resort: The Promenade ❤️

The true genius of the AVA and the secret to its unique vibe can be found on its main level. Everything—and we mean everything—is located on one magnificent, air-conditioned indoor promenade that stretches for over half a mile along the entire length of the resort.

This brilliant design choice solves the single biggest problem that plagues other giant resorts: navigation. Gone are the days of deciphering confusing maps, getting lost on winding outdoor paths, or waiting ten minutes for a golf cart just to get to dinner. At AVA, every restaurant, bar, shop, and activity entrance is right there on the promenade. It’s the central nervous system of the resort, making it unbelievably easy to get your bearings.

But it’s more than just convenient. This layout creates an incredible, dynamic energy. In the evening, the promenade comes alive. You can stroll from a high-end cocktail bar to a chic boutique, grab a scoop of authentic gelato, listen to the music spilling out of a restaurant, and window-shop, all in climate-controlled bliss. It feels like the vibrant Royal Promenade of a luxury cruise ship, but on a much grander and more luxurious scale. While the AVA is conveniently located just 10 minutes from the airport, it is not in the bustling Hotel Zone. The trade-off for this relative isolation? An absolutely staggering array of on-site activities that makes it almost impossible to get bored. You could genuinely spend a full week here and not experience everything the resort has to offer. The list is almost overwhelming:

• For the thrill-seeker: A full-scale laser tag arena, a state-of-the-art arcade with racing simulators, and even a multi-room escape room experience.
• For the family (or kids at heart): A sleek, modern bowling alley that feels more like a private lounge.
• For the evening: A stunning, professional-grade theater hosting nightly shows and entertainment.
• For practical needs: A collection of chic shops, a “tienda” for sundries and snacks, and a well-stocked pharmacy.

This is all before you even step outside.

Pools, a Lagoon, and Endless Loungers ☀️

The outdoor space at AVA is just as impressive as the interior. A series of absolutely giant pools stretches across the entire oceanfront length of the property, meaning you are never far from a place to cool off. And for anyone who has experienced the dreaded 6 AM “towel game” at other resorts, you can breathe a sigh of relief. There are literally thousands of comfortable lounge chairs available at all hours of the day. Finding a great spot is never a problem.

The true showstopper, however, is the expansive saltwater lagoon. This is a massive, crystal-clear body of water powered by sustainable technology that provides a perfect, protected environment for water sports. We spent an afternoon kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (all included, of course) in the calm, turquoise water. In the middle of the lagoon is a huge, inflatable obstacle course, and yes, the adults were having just as much fun on it as the kids. Ensuring younger members of the familia have their own slice of paradise, the resort boasts a sprawling kids’ waterpark with multiple slides designed for endless aquatic fun.

The “Familia” Feeling: Service, Dining & Rooms 🍽️

This is where the AVA truly defies its size. You will hear the staff use the word “familia” a lot, and it’s not just a marketing slogan; it’s a philosophy that clearly runs through the veins of the resort. From the bartenders to the servers to the concierge, every interaction feels personal, warm, and genuine.

The food and beverage program is a major highlight. With 17 restaurants and bars, the quality and variety are exceptional. The Black Iron steakhouse serves up incredible ribeyes, tenderloins, and New York strips that are all included in your stay. Service at Veranda, the beautiful Italian restaurant, was flawless and attentive—and trust us, we’re picky. The room service breakfast arrived hot, fresh, and exactly on time. And after dinner, a stop at the gelato shop for one of their endless flavors became a nightly ritual.

The rooms themselves are spectacular. Every single room at the AVA is oceanfront, so there are no bad views. The beds are huge and incredibly comfortable, the robes are luxuriously soft, and the amenities are top-of-the-line, right down to the in-room Nespresso machines. The minibar is, of course, fully stocked and replenished daily.

The One Caveat & The Final Verdict

So, is it perfect? In nearly every way, yes. But for the sake of a fully transparent review, we must mention the one area where the Cancun Hotel Zone has an edge: the beach. The sand at AVA is soft and the area is well-maintained, but due to its location, it can be heavily affected by seaweed during the sargassum season, and the water doesn’t have that almost impossibly electric blue color you find further up the coast.

However—and this is a big however—the resort’s incredible pools and the massive, perfectly swimmable lagoon more than make up for it. For a resort experience this complete, it’s a trade-off we would happily make again.

So, do we recommend it? Absolutely, and without hesitation. It is a true, luxurious 5-star all-inclusive experience that somehow manages to feel both epic and intimate at the same time. The AVA has its service down to a science, and we dare say it is a major new competitor for legacy mega-resorts like Moon Palace. And that’s a very exciting thing for Cancun.

Beyond the blissful relaxation, Sailrock truly stands out with its personalized adventures. We embarked on a private boat tour, complete with sandwiches and drinks packed for us, and it felt like we had the entire Caribbean to ourselves for three incredible hours. We didn’t see another person, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, taking a small hike to a secluded iguana island, and even walking along sandbars that seemed to appear magically in the middle of the ocean. He cheered us on and even celebrated the small victories, like mastering the ATV, with high-fives. His focus on safety and making it enjoyable for first-timers truly made it a magical afternoon, even when battling the intense summer heat (so pack your sunscreen!).

The Smart Way to Get There: Your Insider Flight Guide

Now, let’s talk about getting to this slice of paradise, because this is where a little insider knowledge makes all the difference. My biggest piece of advice: take the new American Airlines flight that connects Miami directly to South Caicos (XSC). This is a game-changer. You can literally be on the resort, enjoying your vacation, in just a few hours after leaving the U.S. This brand-new direct flight marks the first time South Caicos has had a nonstop connection to the United States, and it’s by far the easiest way to arrive.

The alternative involves flying into Providenciales (PLS) first, then taking a separate 15-minute inter-island flight to South Caicos. We did this, and it often leads to long, frustrating layovers in Providenciales, completely disrupting the luxury flow of your trip. Our experience with InterCaribbean Airlines, while a budget option, was consistently unreliable; all four of our flights were delayed by hours, which simply doesn’t match the seamless luxury of Sailrock. So, bottom line: connect via Miami for a stress-free arrival.

Service That Anticipates Your Every Need

Sailrock’s service truly stands out at every corner. It’s as hands-on or as unobtrusive as you desire. Want to be completely self-sustained in your villa? They’ll handle all your grocery shopping beforehand. Prefer ultimate pampering? A private butler and chef can cater to your every whim, preparing meals right in your villa.

You also have two fantastic on-site restaurants: The Great House, and The Cove, which sits right on the Caribbean side. The culinary experience is exceptional, with menus changing daily, offering everything from perfectly cooked ribeyes to succulent lamb chops. They even host special bonfire nights, where you can watch the sunset and enjoy s’mores after a luxurious dinner. The resort’s General Manager is often seen personally chatting with guests, ensuring their experience is going well and checking if there’s anything else they can do to make it special. Room service is surprisingly swift, especially considering the resort’s spread-out layout. And getting around is effortless; their comfortable, four-seater “resort buggies” (larger than golf carts, like a utility vehicle) are always available to pick you up wherever you need to go.

Discovering a New Kind of Luxury

This is truly a zero-stress experience, and for many travelers, that’s the ultimate luxury. Sailrock has thought of all the little details that can often create stress: ice delivered in minutes, your preferred drinks ready, bug spray, umbrellas, and even lanterns for evening strolls. It’s all those small things that make a vacation seamless, meticulously handled here.

We won’t soon forget our stay at Sailrock and know we’ve discovered something truly magical. Now more connected than ever, this secret paradise is well within reach. Prices vary, starting around $1000 per night in the low season (summer) for double occupancy, increasing significantly in high season. For families or groups of couples, the larger villas offer incredible value. An all-inclusive package is also available; we found it most beneficial for those who enjoy indulging in alcoholic beverages, otherwise, à la carte dining can be more affordable for one or two drinks a day. With their popular Stopover Program, travelers have the chance to spend as long as a full week in Panama before venturing off to some of my favorite destinations that were formerly a headache to reach before Copa saved the day — Honduras, Guatemala, and Brazil.

Between the vibrant wonders of Casco Viejo (Old Town), the staggering never-ending skyline reminiscent of Dubai, and both Caribbean and Pacific shorelines as well as hidden UNESCO-protected towns, Panama earned my stamp of approval not only as a stopover, but your Central America mainstay.

Of course, any seasoned traveler knows choosing a destination is one thing, but choosing where to stay is another conversation entirely.

Welcome To Hotel La Compañia: Panama City’s Remarkable Revival

If you’ve been following us at Travel Off Path in recent months, you’ve likely noticed I’ve personally been a globetrotting fool anywhere from San Jose, California to Panama.

As such, I say with no exaggeration: my stay in Panama City is one of my favorite in all my recent travels — a truly unique hotel that Hyatt has masterfully transformed.

Preserved ruins now stand as a 5-star hotel that feels more like home than a place where you’re not allowed to touch anything.

Every meticulous detail is wrought with purpose, whether it be different aromas in every corner of the property, dedicated wings of Spanish, American and French flair, or centuries-old stone walls, rustic timber ceilings, and surprisingly spacious rooms outfitted with aesthetically rich remnants of bygone eras.

Best of all — Old Town Panama City is practically at your doorstep. Walk past the friendly front desk staff, outside the lobby doors always opened for you with a smile, and you’re smacked with cobbled streets, pastel plazas, and ornate cathedrals — and of course, some souvenir shops to purchase an obligatory “Panama Hat”.

Hyatt’s Unbound Collection property opened in 2022, but you’d never know it. The grounds are spotless and seems as if it opened yesterday even with unmissable touches of its 300+ year past as the original Jesuit convent dates back as early as the 1680’s.

The hotel itself feels like a modern hotel nowadays (well, except for the elevator serving as a time machine), but next door lies a stunning backdrop of Jesuit ruins now commonly used for wedding receptions.

Though, the gates do open to the public on Sundays to a local artisan market, making for an unforgettable photo-op even if you can’t make room for a new art piece in your carry-on.

Travel Tip: I highly recommend checking out the Capella Rooftop for tasty cocktails and sweeping views of not only the preserved ruins, but Panama City’s mix of towering cathedrals and soaring skyline.

Turn Back The Clock At Dinner: No Phones Allowed!

As if Hotel La Compañia didn’t offer a trip back in time simply by staying here, around the corner from the hotel grounds beyond the sightly plaza is Villa Ana, named after Ana Mercedes Arias, who wasn’t shy for opulence and her passion for living life to the fullest.

Surprises await on each floor of this awe-inspiring 1920’s multi-level mansion, whether it be a rooftop cigar bar, quirky speakeasy, or the star of the show, the restaurant itself, backed by Michelin-starred Chef Patrice Jaumon, who proudly told me their dishes are “made with love”.

If that’s the secret ingredient for the sensational perfectly crafted Caipiroskas, a hefty serving of Duck Confit Dumplings, and equal parts juicy and crispy Suckling Pig that graced my lips, then someone give me a hug because I need more love in my life.

I’d love to show you photos as proof of how delicious this meal was, but circling back to Ana’s zest for life, Villa Ana believes the best experience is to enjoy a meal with loved ones free of conversation lull escapes of doom-scrolls and swiping right into digital oblivion.

This was my first “digital detox” meal, but certainly won’t be my last. Good wine, great food, and even better company made for a truly memorable evening while my phone enjoyed a break from my thumbs, locked away at the hostess stand.

There are 5 on-site restaurants at Hotel La Compañia. In my opinion, Villa Ana topped them all with a close second being 1739, a French Modern concept actually located in the hotel just beyond the lobby and hidden wine cellar (ask about it!).

I might give 1739 the nod above Villa Ana, but they 86’d escargot, which is about as much of a party foul as Mexican restaurants not having chips and salsa.

Though, my order of Lamb Chops was flawlessly executed, capped off with a better selection of wine than Villa Ana, the overall experience of being forced to lock our phones away was truly unique and borderline necessary when we’re glued to the ‘gram in Travel Mode.

There is one secret spot you should know about, though. Tucked away in the back corner of El Sanctuario lies La Panadería, a great place to fuel to your morning with freshly made empanadas and to- die-for lattes.

One step outside Hotel La Compañia’s lobby and you’re transported back centuries along a maze of stone streets boasting an array of colorations.

While my travel ego gets the best of me at times trying to find hidden gems on my own, I thoroughly enjoyed letting Ancon Expeditions take the reins on an insightful walking tour through the heart of Casco Viejo.

For sample size, I never would’ve learned what you think is a “Panama Hat” really isn’t one at all. Those are for tourists. Locals rock a completely different style.

Our guide Nico Guerrero couldn’t have been more helpful guiding us around not only Panama City, where we were able to score behind-the-scenes access learning the ins and outs of the world-famous Panama Canal, but also a grand tour (including samples) of the world’s most expensive coffee — you have to take part in the Geisha Experience, known as the “champagne of coffee”.

Each bean is hand-picked one by one by farmers, resulting in a flavor so profound, you may never go to Starbucks again.

As amazing as wandering the urban sprawl of Old Town was, my personal favorite excursions went way beyond the historic streets and towering skyline.

Witnessing the Panama Canal firsthand and realizing how ingenious it was took me back to my first visit to Paris, where I already decided I wouldn’t be impressed by the city’s most famous attraction. Needless to say, I was wrong…

The best part was the boat tour through Gatun Lake and run-off waterways, including close-up encounters with wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, and crocs as well as massive ships that bring us all the Temu junk we order.

Though, if there’s one place on the itinerary I wish we had more time to spend, it’s the UNESCO-protected town of Portobelo, a secret village on Panama’s remote Caribbean coast with roots tied to Christopher Columbus’ voyage.

As more travelers discover the magic of Panama, Portobelo should top their wishlist with its compelling blend of history, unique Afro-Caribbean culture, and natural beauty, including seemingly untouched shores perfect for snorkeling, where I saw eels, stingrays, schools of fish, and coral reefs — thankfully, no sharks.
